T

he Valencia Hotel courtyard was shimmering and sparkling with beautiful holiday decorations and full of smiles and laughter during our holiday party cocktail hour. Elves at the photo booths delighted guests and four young marines in their formal uniforms brought warmth and spirit to the party throughout the evening. Over 100 guests including designers, IPs and student members gathered to celebrate a successful 2016. There was no doubt our holiday party committee had successfully transported all our guests to a ‘Winter Wonderland.’ This year, we had two special volunteers: joining Cita Rojas-Sila, event co-chair and Professional Development Director, were Jessica Jimenez of Hansgrohe as co-chair, and Charlene Rouspil of Dacor as committee member. Both were past board members of NKBA Northern California. The holiday party not only gave all the guests a fun time but also supported three of the ASID five Pillars for fy2017: living the Brand, Diversity and Inclusion, and Alternative revenue Streams. It was the perfect moment to close 2016 and the first quarter of FY2017. Let’s recap the first quarter for FY2017. First, I would like to remind everyone of the ASID five pillars and goals for FY2017: ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖

Design Impacts life living the Brand Communication Diversity and Inclusion Alternate revenue Streams

All our meetings/events were designed to support one or more of these pillars. october Chapter meeting: event leader Marianne Bauer | 2017 Pantone Color Forecast with 0.1 CEU at University Electric Home Appliance Center by Leatrice Eiseman | Design Impacts Life, Diversity and Inclusion The speaker brought her dynamic presentation to introduce her view of color trends, which we hope all attendees can apply in their 2017 projects. We had over 130 attendees, a record for monthly program meetings. Sharon Kasser, ASID professional member and instructor in the Cañada College Interior Design Program, brought a large group of students from her two classes. Many of those students were excited by the experience of their first professional meeting. I appreciate Sharon’s support of the chapter and hope many of her students will join as student members. october hearst Castle retreat: event leader Susan Hoffman | Hearst Castle Retreat with 0.1 CEU by Denny Holland | Design Impacts Life, Diversity and Inclusion The chapter returned for a second visit to the Castle. This time Denny presented his 0.1 CEU lecture about Julia Morgan and the Hearst Castle, which is one of the most inspirational local Continued on page 5

It was the first joint meeting with another organization for FY2017 and a good mixer for contractors and designers. Unfortunately we lost the cooking competition but we gained a wonderful business network with NARI members. Should we hold a rematch next year? november first Annual Designer Sample Sale and Boutique: event leaders Katherine Quan and Anny Wong | Diversity and Inclusion, Living the Brand, Alternative Revenue Streams This was the Chapter’s first to-the-public sample sale. Da Vinci Marble offered their showroom for the event. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate with us. Customers at Da Vinci Marble, however, enjoyed visiting all the booths for their holiday shopping and the lunch provided by the showroom. It was a fantastic place to show the ASID Brand to the general public. We are hoping to have a second sample sale next year.

november Valle Monte league, Christmas tree Project: community service project leader Teri Pollard, past chapter president | Design Impacts Life, Living the Brand, ASID Gives Back, Diversity and Inclusion As many of you know, this community service project is recognized locally as a holiday tradition in San Jose. The audience of this event is our business target market. The project not only supports ASID Gives Back but is a wonderful way to put the ASID brand out to the general public. As chapter President, I am thrilled to see our chapter meeting so many of the ASID goals in the first quarter of FY2017. This achievement could not have been possible without the generous contributions from our annual sponsors, event sponsors, volunteers, and all the meeting attendees. Our chapter needs to continuously evolve to contribute to the growth of the design community and construction industry. As chapter president, I thank all chapter members for your help in 2016 and ask for your continued support in 2017. Design Mart Silicon Valley

A STUDY IN ADAPTATION & TRANSFORMATION

by Mary Ann McEwan, ASID, CID, MBA A German literature professor once told me that the poet Goethe was successful because he had a very artistic mother and a very disciplined father. The combination of those traits allowed Goethe to channel his creativity into some of the world’s most beautiful poetry. The same can be said of business or any creative enterprise: one needs the dream first and then the discipline to make the dream come true. In 2005, Sharon Daroca had an epiphany to start a furniture showroom in the South Bay. While shopping at the San Francisco Furniture Mart with a group of fellow designers, she learned that it would be closing down (this 1937 Art Deco building is now the headquarters of Twitter). As an Allied Member of ASID, she was at that time a partner in an interior design firm, and knew that clients from the South Bay often found it challenging to make the trek to San Francisco to visit the Mart and the Design Center. ‘I’m going to open a showroom in San Jose,’ Sharon announced. When she mentioned this idea to her husband Kevin, he said, ‘I’ll write the business plan.’ Kevin Daroca had been writing business plans for 25 years in the semi-conductor industry. He had been Vice President of Worldwide Sales for a number of high tech firms, writing financial projections for acquiring venture capital, and dramatically growing sales. He soon caught the spark that had hit Sharon, and said, ‘I’ll invest in this, but only if you can show a real ROI.’ That was eleven years ago. Before even leasing the space, on July 28th, 2005 they signed the paperwork with a bank, obtaining a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan. The very next day they flew to Las Vegas to visit their first furniture show as Design Mart. On the plane Kevin met two designers also headed to the show, and handed them one of their freshly printed business cards, the ink barely dry. Those two women gave Design Mart a chance, and after all these years are still loyal customers. Sharon and Kevin brought their newly signed SBA papers to the Las Vegas show, and promoted their furniture business. The SBA papers validated to potential vendors that they were going to be a legitimate business, even without a showroom. With Sharon’s background in both interior design and sales, and Kevin’s experience in sales and finance, they obtained some furniture lines, and were launched! On October 12, 2005, Design Mart Silicon Valley, fine furnishings to the trade opened for business, in a 7,200 square foot space. The showroom has now expanded to 12,000 square feet. In the beginning, Sharon and Kevin wore all the hats; now they have a team of nine to keep everything running smoothly. - 6 - ISSue IV 2016/17 | CA PENINSULA/SILICON VALLEY CHAPTER

Businesses need continual evaluation to respond to changing conditions. During the Great Recession, which affected all of our industry, they called upon SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) for some advice, which they found beneficial. Later, they reached out to the SBDC (Small Business Development Centers) for some additional consultation. Both SCORE and SBDC consider Design Mart to be one of their success stories. As a result of this internal analysis, they re-energized their commitment to the company’s original business model, relying on their combined knowledge of the industry. As Kevin explains, ‘If you believe in the business model you’ve created, you have to work the model even if it hits a stumbling point. There may be dynamics you can’t control, but it requires you to adapt, not give up the model itself.’ In addition to making some necessary cutbacks in expenses, they decided to expand their business into the commercial market. They landed their first hotel project, which led to further opportunities. They now work with designers, architectural firms, hotel property owners, state government resources, for-profit and not-for-profit entities. Another way Design Mart expanded was by adding several fabric lines to their product base. One of their secrets to success is providing outstanding customer service. We all know that things can go wrong with an order, which might involve delays, manufacturing errors, and freight or delivery problems. Sharon and Kevin will step in and address the issue, trying to resolve it by mediating and/or mitigating problems as needed. Current design customers know that Design Mart will be there for them, and Kevin and Sharon tell emerging professionals, ‘We’re going to have your back; we’ll work with you and train you.’ Sharon and Kevin realize that they are a good team together, that one without the other would not have led to the same success. It’s been essential that one complements the skills of the other, the design experience and the business acumen. Their only regret is that they did not open the business sooner! They took the path to longevity, treating clientele, staff and manufacturers with respect, and having the integrity to do the right thing. From the beginning, Design Mart has chosen to be a vital supporter of our ASID California Peninsula Chapter, both as an IP member and as a Sponsor. They have hosted many events at their showroom, including ‘Lunch and Learn’ workshops. The combination of creativity and business savvy has allowed Design Mart to provide an essential service to the design community, and has indeed fulfilled one of the company’s goals of making designers ‘feel like family.’

A Winter Wonderland

Charlene rouspil, laurie Klatt-nelson, Marianne Bauer, Cita rojas-Sila, Janine Arietta, Jessica Jimenez, Anny Wong, Katherine Quan, Chris nobriga, Sue ross

True to this year’s Holiday Party theme of ‘A Winter Wonderland like No Other’, the Hotel Valencia Santa Row was festively decked out and transformed into a magical setting for the occasion. We participated again in the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots drive as part of #ASIDGivesBack. To foster the spirit of giving, those who brought toys received a complimentary signature cocktail during the cocktail hour! Looking to share the holiday cheer, our Chapter turned out in force to celebrate the generosity and hard work of our Sponsors and volunteers. Members and guests of this sold out event mixed and mingled, spilling onto the hotel’s inviting terrace while grazing on hors d’oeuvres of duck confit, serrano ham and other scrumptious bites. Those looking for additional diversions browsed the holiday boutique table for gift ideas, snatched photo ops with playful itinerant Elves or posed under the mistletoe using a variety of fun props. The evening culminated in the presentation of awards by Jennifer and Yukari to show appreciation for our Chapter’s amazing FY 2016

The New Sexy Hex Tiles

by Cynthia Campanile

Each year we attend the Tile and Stone conventions with great anticipation to see what the factories will be launching. It’s always so exciting to see what the Italian manufacturers come up with as they continue to be the leaders of innovation in our industry. This year’s major trend was certainly no surprise as we had been seeing it sneak into just about every new collection leading up to the shows. The hottest tile trend at the conventions was definitely hexagons! We know hexagon tiles aren't new by any means; we have had 1x1 hexes for decades where we often see them in shower floors, bathroom floors and even commercial restaurants and pubs. But, this year in Las Vegas at The International Surface Event, KBIS, and Coverings there was an explosion of hex tiles. Hex tiles in every color, finish and material you could ever want: handmade, machine made, decorative, stone, concrete, metal, and glass. Go ahead and imagine any color, any finish, or any size and I bet we can find it for your next project.

Another trend that continues to remain hot in today’s market is porcelain wood looking tiles. With the new digital glazing technology, manufacturers now have the capability to create unlimited textures and colors ranging from beautifully sophisticated finishes to ones that appear as if the paint is peeling off. I especially like how they look when installed in one of my favorite patterns: herringbone. These floor are absolutely stunning! While gray continues to dominate the color choices, we did see a lot of beautiful white shades, browns to beige, and many lovely soft blues and aqua hues. This porcelain wood look is proving to be the smart choice especially for families that have small children and animals because they don’t scratch like real wood, never fade, and never need refinishing. Now that is really something! Some people object to tile floors, pointing out how cold they are, especially at this time of year. Did you know there is a system to heat them? It comes with a thermostat that can be programed to your needs. They are amazing, everyone should have them. Personally I love a nice cool tile or stone floor during the summer, but once the weather turns cold in October and my stone feels more like ice, I turn the heater on and OMG, I have a lush warm floor. No need for slippers here. We invite you to stop by to see all of these new products, and more at Artistic Tile and Stone’s showroom in San Carlos. Artistic Tile and Stone

A Piccadilly Christmas CHRISTMAS TREE ELEGANCE 2016

Our Chapter is pleased to participate in the Valle Monte League’s fundraising efforts as part of #ASIDGivesBack. The non-profit organization donates all net proceeds to four noble causes: Family & Children Services, The Centre for Living with Dying, Alzheimer's Activity Center, and Services for Brain Injury. The fundraiser, Christmas Tree Elegance 2016 ‘A Piccadilly Christmas’, was held on 12/1 and 12/2 at the Doubletree Hilton in San Jose to the delight of 2,300 guests over the 2 days. Our community service project leader Teri Pollard with committee members Ann Flynn, Victoria Nazloo, Kaitlyn Pinson, Sue Ross and Jackie Bartlett represented the Chapter in decorating the VML Past Presidents’ Tree to the theme of Castles, Tassels and Crown Jewels. Armed with ornaments that were authentic replicas of English castles and memorabilia commemorating the Queens’ royal celebrations, supplemented by a trove of faux jewel drops, gold & faux crystal tassels, as well as gold and silver ornaments, the committee created a glamorous tree that became a favorite backdrop for the event attendees’ selfies. As an eco-friendly touch, the committee used all LEDs to light the tree.

The Chapter was prominently recognized by the Mistress of Ceremony as designers of the 14 Christmas trees for the event were introduced. In addition, a display board by the vignette formally acknowledged the Chapter, its committee, and the VML supporters. Many thanks to our IPs who supported our efforts in creating the Chapter’s vignette: Design Mart Silicon Valley for the leather chair and tree skirt fabrics, and Larry Perez of All Natural Stone for fabrication of a much needed steel support easel as well as his onsite assistance!
