O

ur Chapter is moving along in the New Year with lots of memorable moments. Inside you will see events that have taken us forward. Last February, we started with a Title 24 CEU that brought us

up to date. There are more dramatic changes than in the previous years.

Also, in February, we gave the Cinequest Film/VR Festival a pro-bono design for their gigantic

VR Room. Everyone was so moved by this. So many had said they had never seen anything like

President’s Letter

this before. We are continuing this gift again this year to Cinequest, which has the theme of IMPACT.

April featured a CEU by Denny Holland that went over what those who took the trip to Japan experienced. We learned a lot about Zen and how to get there with our clients.

May brought us ASID CEO Randy Fiser, Jim Brewer VP of Gov. & Public Affairs and VP Membership D.J. Johnson in a Town Hall Meeting. They presented 0.2 CEUs about our industry Outlook and the latest Legislative Updates.

June Design Awards stepped up a notch with really nice awards. The party was also pleasant.

In August another CEU was taught: Design Empathy by a designer who has a child who has gone through a lot. Tears actually came out of our eyes. It was quite memorable.

The Board of Director’s Installation in September was a real wild party. Everyone had a blast with the casino, the games, dinner and the DJ! It was really fun.

Steve Nobel’s presentation in October was a great benefit to our members. We each received

0.3 CEUs, which we could apply to our membership renewal in January. He also is one of those speakers you never forget.

November Chopped Challenge: ASID versus NARI was so much fun. The two teams were very creative and challenging. The attendance was up with every one having a great time.

Inside you will also see an article on NCIDQ. By taking this test, you become a true professional with proof that you know how to construct safe places as well as being innovative. Taking tests

in other areas, without the NCIDQ, is difficult. Once you take this one, all of the others are easy because you are an expert.

2ND ANNUAL CHOPPED CHALLENGE ASID Vs NARI at Monark Premium Appliances THE

Secret Receipe

By John Hamilton, Student ASID Ingredients: 5 (including 1 secret)

Preparation: Take 2 teams and put them in a kitchen with top of the line appliances. Use all ingredients to prepare an appetizer and a dessert. Add in the excitement of a watching crowd. Cook for 45 minutes at varying temperature. Plate their dishes for the judges to taste. Add up the scores. Await the Judges’ veredict.

the winning team: Cita rojas-Sila, Doug Mszanowski, Sue ross and Chris nobriga

This is the recipe for the ASID/NARI Chopped Challenge. What a fun and exciting night it was for the chefs and the audience! In the end, ASID was crowned the winner and took the cleaver (and bragging rights) back from NARI. And, among the fun and excitement, the generosity of all the guests was evident as the mountain of donated coats, blankets, and other winter items for folks affected by the North Bay fires grew and grew. Overall, the Chopped Challenge was a fun, delicious evening and it will be great to see if a year from now ASID can keep the title or NARI will cook their way to getting it back.

the moment of the truth with the judges. Bay area seasoned chefs, Jose luis relinque, Paul tang and Michael Klein evaluate and score all dishes diligently.

Go ASID Team By Marianne Bauer, Allied ASID

Congratulations to the winners of the 2nd annual ASID/NARI Chopped Challenge at Monark Premium Appliance Co. Our talented ASID chefs Doug Mszanowski, Chris Nobriga, Cita Rojas-Sila, and Sue Ross braved the great unknown of secret ingredients and induction cooking to emerge victorious with only minor injuries. The equally skilled NARI team fought a valiant fight, but this year had to concede the coveted Cleaver to their opponents. Go ASID team!

NCIDQ Special Alert for Associate Degree Holders

By Marie Chan, ASID, CID, Green AP

Design is your passion. You got your Interior Design Certificate and field experience. You have the drive. Now what?

Are you at a crossroad in your career, trying to get to the next

level? Are you ready to answer the ultimate challenge – take the NCIDQ and become a Professional ASID member? This

article will hopefully help clarify the process for our West Valley and Canada College grads so you can advance towards this worthwhile goal!

This excerpted chart from Council for Interior Design

Qualification (CIDQ) shows several ways for community college graduates to meet NCIDQ requirements. However,

it is critical to know that eligibility for Interior Design Certificate holders with 40 semester credits, as shown in ROUTE 5,

will terminate by December 31, 2018. To sit for the exam,

members who have completed a minimum of 40 units of

interior design courses for their certificate and accumulated

7,040 hours of qualified work experience must submit their

NCIDQ application by this deadline. Once approved, the candidate will have 5 years to schedule and complete the

exam. Members impacted by this change are strongly encouraged to apply for the exam before the end of this year.

Please note an Associate Degree holder with 60 semester credits of

design classes can take the NCIDQ through ROUTE 4 (Associate Degree

SHO WROOM + DIS TRIBUTING

only) or ROUTE 3 (Bachelor’s or more advanced degree in another field + Associate Degree) without restrictions. The latter route recognizes

the value of higher education, so shorter and more flexible work experience is accepted.

If your Certificate is 40 units or less, is there a way to sit for the NCIDQ?

The answer is yes! Just take additional classes so transcripts show 60 credits of interior design coursework and you’re back in the game! There

is no time limit for the completion of any Certificate or Degree as CIDQ

understands curriculum and resource challenges can make graduation unpredictable.

The NCIDQ is offered semi-annually in April and October. Applications are reviewed for eligibility around November 3-January 15 for the

ALISON THOMAS Showroom Consultant alisont@riggsdistributing.com

spring exam, and May 15-July 15 for the fall exam. Once approved,

the candidate can proceed to register and schedule. Information on

eligibility requirements is available at https://www.cidq.org/eligi-

bility-requirements. Details on the application, registration and exam

timeline are at www.cidq.org/calendar. Still got questions? Please contact CIDQ at 202.721.0220 for clarifications!

Memoriam Linda K. DeMartini, ASID 9/11/1950 - 01/18/2018

Past President 1998-1999

By Mary Ann McEwan, ASID, CID, MBA I felt great sadness in learning that Linda DeMartini, ASID, had passed away in January, of cancer. While she had not been active in our chapter

for a few years, she was a beloved Past President,

having served from October 1, 1998 through September 30, 1999.

I remember Linda as a lovely person, both professional and gracious in her manner. She was chapter president at the height of the dot.com era, and worked hard to move the chapter even further into the digital age during her presidency.

Risë Krag, Allied ASID, said it best, “Just because you don’t see someone for awhile,

they are still in your mind.” When Risë moved to this area from San Francisco, Linda was chapter president and, “made a big impression on me.”

Paula McNab, ASID, wrote, “I am shocked and saddened! Linda was an amazing woman and leader in our industry.”

Lilley Yee, ASID, remembered, “I am so sad and sorry to hear that Linda passed away. We have been friends for a long time. I have vivid memories of us driving

to the San Francisco Mart and the Design Center looking for furniture, lighting

and accessories,” for Linda’s newly remodeled home. “She had impeccable taste…

I’ll always remember her welcoming smile, kindness and warm heart. I’ll never forget the beautiful Christmas decorations at the house and the fun holiday gatherings for our group. Linda devoted a great deal of time and energy serving

as ASID Chapter President…She worked hard to get designers to join the chapter and attend meetings. That was also the year she designed a beautiful wine cellar for the Coyote Point Museum Decorators Show House at the Crosby estate.” Photos courtesy of The Integrated Lifestyle, Artison USA.

Linda grew up in Kansas City, but moved to California where she worked for the

government and met her future husband, James G.B. DeMartini III (Jim). They married in 1974 and were married “with love and devotion” for 44 years. She is

survived by three sons, a stepdaughter, six beloved grandchildren, plus five siblings

and a large extended family. Later in life, Linda became an avid golfer, and was involved in family genealogy, as well as many charitable organizations.

We appreciate all her contributions to the design world and to our chapter, and we will miss her.

The 28th annual Cinequest Film & Virtual Reality Festival took place in downtown San Jose from February 27th to March 11th. For the

second consecutive year, the California Peninsula Chapter of ASID

collaborated with Cinequest Film & VR Festival in one of the biggest celebrations of creativity and innovation of the year. At the California

Theatre, the CA Peninsula Chapter of ASID created an atmospheric

room in which audience members could experience the exhilarating Virtual Reality Cinema Programs all around them.

“As interior designers, we transform spaces into reality for our

residential and commercial clients,” said Janet T. Marena, Chair of

the ASID/Cinequest 2018 Committee. Her creative team designed

the interior of the Virtual Reality Programs Room. “We used theatrical

can delve into the incredible world of virtual reality,” explained

Marena. Furthermore, “attendees may choose from simple free-
