FLORIDA WEST COAST
President-elect’s Message
Welcome to a re-energized Florida West Chapter! I am very excited to serve as your ASID-FWC Chapter President for the 2013- 2014 year commencing in October 2013. I'm sure you as members have high expectations of your president and other chapter leadership. I am honored to serve and I will certainly do my best to fulfill the duties of the position.
At this year's chapter leadership conference in Los Angeles, I spent some time with some of my fellow board members where we began to craft our strategic plan and outline our goals for the coming year.
One of these goals is to create more cohesiveness within the chapter. We hope to do this by organizing monthly networking mixers where our ASID designers can “rub elbows” with our ASID industry partners. By creating more excitement in the chapter we hope to have energized membership participation. We have also set a goal for the coming year to offer CEU's every quarter, engaging our industry partners and local businesses. We envision a chapter where designers and industry partners feel good about belonging to ASID and know that their contribution is a valuable part of the Society.
We have an enthusiastic incoming board for the 2013-2014 year and we are excited about encouraging fellowship, fostering a sense of common goals, and bringing a higher level of professional development to the chapter.
I want to thank all of you for your membership to our unique chapter. We are honored to represent our designers and industry partners.
Holly Dennis, ASID ASID Florida West Coast President-elect 2013-2014

Manatee Technical Institute PROJECT DESCRIPTION The new Manatee Technical Institute represents a modern, high tech training facility to meet the workforce needs of Manatee County. Designed with the latest energy efficient construction and teaching technologies, this facility compares with surrounding universities in quality and features.
Unique features of the design include: The large open multipurpose space that on a daily basis serves as the 400 seat campus dining space, and hosts special events that accommodate up to 700 people. The space has a large format video and enhanced sound system.
The Media Center is not the conventional media center. Rather, it is an internet café, study space and tutoring place. Built-in computer stations and individual tutor rooms are provided for students to research and

STATEMENT BY THE ARCHITECT Michael Bryant, Executive Vice President of FAWLEY BRYANT ARCHITECTS, INC. notes "The design of the new MTI Main Campus has been an intense and long process, and the dream of many people, including staff, students, community supporters and business partners. We have all worked together to create the kind of facility this community deserves and needs. This design is meant to attract your attention and have a presence that elevates MTI to its proper position as one of the most well respected technical schools in the country. As such, it will become one of the most significant economic drivers for future growth of Manatee County by providing the training of our current workforce and those of our future."

Big Ass Fans Comfort Art Once an eyesore for even the most well-designed homes, ceiling fans have been reinvented to serve as the centerpiece of a room or blend seamlessly into the background. Today’s preeminent ceiling fans have gone through a rebirth of sorts, landing technology and design on an equal playing field. Grandma’s clunky, noisy, ceiling fan is now a thing of the past and their new look is simply a thing of beauty unto itself.

Material makeover Materials used to showcase modern ceiling fans reflect a new focus on sustainability while also offering the durability to withstand humid environments. Glass-infused matrix composite and fast-renewing Moso bamboo are two of these materials offering ceiling fans a whole new look and feel. “I love bamboo, and think that it really ties back into green building,” said Grable. “The diversity of the finishes that you can get out of bamboo is really exciting. It can look like teak wood, or it can be charcoal-finished wood from 12-century Japanese architecture.” It’s not about reinventing the wheel; it’s about engineering it to spin a little better, a little quieter, a little more beautifully.
