BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Holly Dennis, ASID President-Elect Carmen Christensen, ASID Financial Director Christine Brown, ASID Communications Director Kelsey McKiernan, Associate ASID Professional Development Director Alice Alexander, Allied ASID Membership Director Keffie Lancaster, Associate ASID Emerging Professional Director Elisabeth Croy, Allied ASID At-Large Director Rob Guzzo, Industry Partner Student Representative Victoria Auger, Student ASID Chapter Administrator James Simpson, FASID
What a fantastic beginning we’ve had this year to the newly re-energized ASID Florida West Chapter! Serving as your ASID-FWC Chapter President for the 2013- 2014 year has been busy, fun, and rewarding! The primary focus of this year’s Board was to bring excitement back to our chapter, engage our industry partners, increase membership and retain current members. We have held several events at exciting locations such as Made Restaurant, The Tile Market, Prosource, The Home Resource, and Soicher-Marin. I know that the momentum will continue through the coming 2014-2015 year and there are already many exciting events in the planning stage. We have become inclusive to professionals outside of ASID such as architects, contractors, and others in the building trades. We feel our chapter thrives when we include all in the design community. We have stayed steadfast in our mission regarding Florida Legislation and we remain very engaged with our Lobbyist, Ackerman, in Tallahassee. We attend the quarterly Florida Board of Architecture and Interior Design meetings and we have monthly calls with our Government Affairs department at Headquarters in Washington, DC. These efforts are to ensure that we stay abreast to any issues that arise during the Florida Legislative Session. Retaining Ackerman as our lobbyist, benefits ALL registered interior designers in Florida, not just ASID Members. I encourage all members to learn more about ASID’s Legislative Policy if they have not already done so. As my year comes to an end on September 30th, 2014, I want to thank you for your membership and involvement in our chapter. It has been a great honor and pleasure serving you. ASID values your membership and we want you to feel that you value your membership as well. We are always open to ideas and we are always looking to our membership to jump in and volunteer and grow our society. Warm regards.

The Lake Club Sarasota By Bonnie Lancaster, ASID and Keffie Lancaster, Associate ASID It’s not every day you get to build a home around a pipe organ but Lancaster Interior Design was part of great endeavor with local homeowner to do just that. This 876pipe organ became the center focus of the great room and the team retro-designed a model by London Bay Homes. The floor plan was modified by enlarging the living room and raising the ceiling 26 feet. “Our challenge was to make the house residential, comfortable and elegant," said Bonnie Lancaster. “Bill loves gadgets and technology so he wanted everything up to the minute in that department and the sound engineer made it clear that we should avoid heavy drapes, thick area carpets and too much upholstered furniture. The living room, dining area and kitchen are one flowing space and so we treated it as a single unit. “Additionally, there are French doors that open onto a large outdoor kitchen, pool and patio area that the Siebeckers use for entertaining, so everything out there had to coordinate with what’s in the public part of the home since it all functions together.” One more challenge was that the homeowners were bringing antiques and pieces of family heirloom furniture with them, as well as favorite pieces such as the etched glass dining table and a foyer light fixture that belonged to Bill’s mother.
“It was like putting together a big puzzle in a lot of ways,” said Keffie Lancaster. “But we worked it out and I think the final result is that everything looks exactly like it belongs here.” The Master Suite was also a major factor in the footprint of the home. Storage was essential element in every area and the couple made sure they had ample space in their “forever home”. An 18-foot-long custom upholstered headboard stretches across two custom made queen beds. A remote control activates the large wall of silk two-tone drapes that open to reveal a large flat screen TV and a magnificent view of the pool. The kitchen is a work of art on its own as well and was designed specifically for the homeowner and her passion for cooking and entertaining. The laser cut marble backsplash, as well as all of the decorative tile throughout the home, was provided by Tile Market of Sarasota. The kitchen features double gas ovens and a gas range, warming drawers, a wine cooler and lots of pantry storage.

There is an air conditioned Hobby Garage and an upstairs Man Cave. Loaded with all of the latest and greatest gadgets and technology of course! A separate his and hers office space was essential to the couple. Her office doubles as a practice music room, with a baby grand piano and smaller practice organ. Unpolished marble is used throughout the home and keeps everything fresh and light. Large silver pendant chandeliers adorn the great room added to the sparkle of the pipes on the organ. “Silver became a unifying element in the public part of the house along with a snappy Benjamin Moore paint color called Simply White in the living room and dining area,” said Bonnie Lancaster. “Even the drapery rods are that color. White sofas blend into the space but we introduced a jolt of bright raspberry for chairs on either side of the organ.” This 4,000 sf home boasts an array of architectural elements, soft colors, and feels like a quiet retreat.

A New Era In Counter Top and Surface Design Looking down memory lane into an old farmhouse and seeing red linoleum over the plank counters. (You see a hand pump next to the sink?) Not your lane? Lucky, young you. How about grandmother’s shiny-metal trimmed formica counters and kitchen table tops? Formica, what a breakthrough, and a material which keeps reinventing itself today. The space age had its material. Remember Corian, the original solid surface, easy to repair and soon to have integral sinks? The counter trends never stop: marble, granite, glass, stainless, concrete: marching, marching, marching, onward to the future. And we have arrived, fellow archaeologists, thrust into the moment where large porcelain countertops slabs materialize. In sheets up to 120 x 60 inches and in thicknesses from 3.5 mil to 12 mil (>1/2 perfect for countertops). Gorgeous pure colors: including the elusive white and black. Calcutta gold reproduction slabs which on seeing, a vecchio artigiano says, “Incredibile! Come see the future at Omicron now.
