BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dear Fellow Members, reetings from your ASID Georgia Chapter President!

President’s Letter

As I write this letter, I have just returned from the ASID Presidents’ Forum in Phoenix, Arizona. I am more energized and encouraged than ever with ASID’s fantastic leadership at a national level. More importantly, I was thrilled to be a part of the kickoff celebration of ASID’s 40 year anniversary. I’ve also found myself reminiscing on my past 18 years as an ASID member and am excited about the future of our chapter. My main focus for my presidency has been to develop programs and educational opportunities for students and emerging pros including events like Portfolio Review Day on March 24 at Knoll Atlanta. It’s up to us to continue to mentor and recognize our students since they are the future of our industry and our organization. We had an excellent turnout for Career Day at ADAC and The Vanguard Series featuring Reed Kroloff at Americas Mart in February. A big shout out to our event organizers Student Reps Shannon Griffin and Macy Dwyer, and Cherie Hoffman, our Professional Development Director. We also want to thank all our industry partner sponsors who make our events possible! As we look forward to the remainder of the year, our Design Excellence Awards are shaping up to be our best yet. I hope everyone is planning to submit projects on our new online submission website as well as attend the gala on May 7th at the fabulous Fox Theatre. Not only will this be a time to recognize our incredible membership and the marvelous talent we have within out state, we’ll also be celebrating ASID’s 40th. Did someone say rooftop after party?!? As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, or any of our ASID Board of Director members. I am now hosting “Coffee with Kerry” on the second Thursday of each month in the ASID GA office. This is an open forum for you to share comments, ask questions or just take a break. Here’s to our bright future!

a big thank you to our generous sponsors for making this evening possible.

Vanguard Series This past February, ASID Georgia hosted the Vanguard Series, with Reed Kroloff, one of the most thought-provoking events of our calendar. In his presentation, he explored the theme of “disruptive thinking” and offered several examples of companies that with their creative approach produced alternative solutions to existing problems. In attendance were numerous members of our design community, as well as many industry partners. Everyone was captivated by Mr. Kroloff’s highly dynamic and entertaining presentation, and guests left the event very energized and ready to change the world!

& student day continued

his past February Mr. Howard hosted student day at ADAC. It was a huge success giving students a chance to see the very places that he resources for his designs. Kerry attended Anderson University in South Carolina where he graduated with a BA in Art and a concentration in Interior Design. Howard has been practicing design for over 20 years and finds his inspiration in the small details around him. Raised in the south, Kerry has an appreciation for all things traditional, but through his design internship he found a love for the modern aesthetic.

Kerry is now paying forward the same love and appreciation to students in design The Martin Nash Showroom at ADAC played host for Student Day activities.

His internship was a huge turning point in his path as a designer. Kerry has always had an appreciation for design and took advantage of every opportunity that came his way. A special professor of his believed in him and helped shape him into the designer he is today. He encourages anyone who is pursuing design, to be involved in a professional organization. He believes that it can help you become a leader amongst your peers. Kerry Howard’s advice to young students is to always ask questions, expand your knowledge, and step out of your required courses. Don’t be afraid to take a class that might enhance your studies such as painting or sewing.

Buckhead Atlanta developed by Oliver McMillan is a new shopping center that opened in September of 2014. The luxury shopping center in the heart of Atlanta is rapidly growing with a buzzing retail list including Billy Reid; Davidoff Cigars; Ferguson Bath, Kitchen, & Lighting Gallery; Les Copains; and Vilebrequin. These five stores are set to open in the Spring/Summer of 2015 making Buckhead Atlanta the most distinctive and cultured shopping center of the Southeast. Less known European companies such as Les Copains and Vilebrequin will be making quite a splash as they arrive in Atlanta. They are part of an initiative to bring new labels to Atlanta. Les Copains, has chosen Buckhead Atlanta for the location of their first U.S. store-front. by Margaret Shippey, Student ASID

he architecture and landscape design showcases Atlanta’s unique architectural style of marrying the classic with the contemporary. Hoerr Schaudt has methodically designed a diverse landscape around the avenues and cobbled streets aiding in the urban environment. Pappageorge Haymes Partners, Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart and Stewart and Gensler have developed the architecture using a diversity of classic and contemporary forms that promote a space that represents the rich history and the bustling urban environment that is Atlanta.

The developers realized the need to appeal to the diverse population in Atlanta. Oliver McMillan has smartly included retail shops and restaurants that attract a younger, “downtown crowd. Companies such as Warby Parker, Corso Coffee, and Shake Shack, are juxtaposed with the luxury shops and restaurants that were originally planned for the space.

1.

For over 20 years, Harrison Design has been known for creating luxury, custom residences, townhomes, and specialty commercial projects that have won countless awards. Since your time at the firm, do you have a favorite type of project from the aforementioned list?

One of the great things about working at Harrison is the exposure to all types of projects. We have been working on the Residences at the Mandarin Oriental Atlanta, which has been a great learning opportunity for me, and has become a very rewarding project to work on.

2.What is your favorite city you have ever had to travel to for a project, and why? I did not go there for a project, but I had the opportunity to spend a day in Columbus, Indiana. It’s this little known treasure trove of architecture with buildings by I.M. Pei, Richard Meier and Eero Saarinen, just to name a few. It was inspiring to see so many amazing details in one small town. -

3.

What is your (and/or your team’s) collective goal in the initial client meeting, and/or how do you prepare for that first meeting?

Most of our projects are whole home projects and we are fortunate to get involved at the very beginning of the process, and work with our clients for 2 to 3 years, so the initial meeting is to really listen to the client’s dreams and come away with a true understanding of their wants and needs.

4.Do you have a certain architectural element that excites you, something that may even be unexpected? (e.g., stairs, columns, arches, ceiling features, etc.)

I am motivated by different things at different phases of a project. Since my background is in kitchens, I still get really excited about the cabinetry layout, plumbing fixtures and even the cabinet hardware. When something comes along that is unique, that we have not seen over and over, that is when I get really excited.

5.

What would be your advice to an emerging professional who is about to step into the interior design world? Network. Get to know people in the industry including designers, architects, builders, vendors and showrooms. They will be your best source for jobs, advice, support and inspiration throughout your career.

6.

Who is your favorite architect or designer? What is your favorite thing about what he or she does? It is hard to pick a favorite, but I recently saw Timothy Corrigan talk about his new book. What I love about him, besides his beautiful work, is that he does not take himself too seriously. On the hard days, it is easy to forget that what we do is really fun, and it’s great to be reminded!

7.

How has ASID helped you and/or Harrison Design connect with other design professionals, expand your business, etc.? OR What is the most fun ASID GA event you have been to?

I love the Storytellers event! It is so motivating to learn what inspires other designers and to hear their stories. Plus, the ASID GA team does such a great job making it such a fun night!

8.

When more than one decision maker (client) is involved in one project, how do you and your firm mitigate the clients’ wants and needs – when they are completely different?

It’s important to listen to what both clients want, and make the best suggestions based on the space. It is our job to come up with a compromise that will work best for their long-term wants and needs.

9. What do you do to de-stress after a long project

is finally completed?

Luckily, I work with smart, creative and hilarious people. We laugh a lot, which helps keep the stress level down. by Jessica Kreunen, Allied ASID

10.

We all remember the first time after design school that our project finally got constructed – what project was that for you?

I did kitchen and bath design when I first got out of school and I remember the night before my first kitchen was installed I did not sleep at all! But, it turned out great and it was so exciting to see something I had been dreaming about become a reality. One of the best things I have learned over the years is that there will always be challenges in every job and every installation. It is our job to come up with creative solutions, it is those challenges that drive me.
