2013-2014 President’s Letter Dear Fellow Members, can’t believe it! My last article as Georgia Chapter ASID President! What a year we have had. This year has seen record turn outs for events like Storytellers and the Design Excellence Awards and it has given rise to new events like Wine Wednesday. The Georgia Chapter has revamped its magazine, to the envy of other chapters and have developed new products to supplement our template sales. We have had a phenomenal year, but we couldn’t do any of it without volunteer efforts. With the busy schedules we have as designers, one of the questions I am asked most is what made you volunteer. Here is what I can tell you, it isn’t just one thing that made me want to volunteer. Yes, I wanted to give back to the community, yes I wanted to be more involved and all of the things that come to mind. Here is what I discovered…when you volunteer, you get to work with and learn from contemporaries that you might not meet otherwise. You learn how to lead. You learn that happiness isn’t a state of being, that it is a lifelong pursuit. Quite simply, volunteering will change you. For. Good. Trey

President’s Letter Dear Fellow Members, ig Hello, from your new ASID Georgia’s Chapter President!! I’m so excited to be your president for the 2014/2015 fiscal year. This position has been a dream of mine since attending Anderson University. I was lucky enough to have a professor that promoted and supported the value that ASID would bring to my career as a young designer. My focus as your president is to grow our chapter membership by working with schools and educators to make ASID a more inclusive chapter throughout Georgia. It’s important that we embrace our students. They are the future of ASID. There are many ways to get involved and connected with the chapter through volunteering on program committees, assisting with our office remodel, or simply calling or emailing us with your ideas. We have several great events planned throughout the new year, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate as a practitioner, industry partner, or sponsor. Many times I’m asked what ASID has done for me. Being part of a professional organization is much more than networking; it’s a way I can give back to the design community, and in return surround myself with a group of people that share common goals. I challenge you to show up and see with your own eyes what ASID can do for you and your business. Let’s work together to make this next year a successful year for the ASID Georgia Chapter! I look forward to seeing each of your smiling faces in October at “Storytellers” at the beautiful Estate. Cheers to a Successful year!! Kerry

Michel Boyd, Allied ASID 1.
What city that you have visited has had the most influence on your designs? I fell in love with the ease of Florence. Italian’s standard for living is aspirational. That natural inclination towards “quality indulgence” is the underlying message in the rooms we design.
2.
What is your goal and/or what do you do in your FIRST meeting with your client?
6. What is your favorite design “rule” to break? Designers are supposed to set trends, NOT follow them.
7.
Would you say that you have a design trademark or specific design style? My design trademark is layering. I employ multiple layers of luxury to create depth and personality in each space.
Our primary goal is to become the INDISPENSIBLE “fixer”. I want to learn as much as possible about the client; how they live and function, their wish list, and how the space isn’t meeting their needs. It’s more for listening than talking.
{8}
3. You always seem so calm and collected. How
do you manage stress so well with your clents and for yourself?
In the age where so many design styles are overlapping, do you have a favorite design style blend?
An essential part of the luxury services we provide our clients is absorbing the anxiety associated with managing the project and all the highs & lows that comes with it. As far as my personal stress level...I listen to A LOT of inspirational music between meetings and appointments.
I am 100% a transitional designer. Being a transitional designer offers the freedom to mix genres creating harmony between contemporary pieces and antiques in the same space.
4.
You have been very active in the design community, specifically in Atlanta. How has ASID GA enhanced your career? Having the opportunity to speak at ASID Storytellers event last year was a highlight of my design career. Being involved with this organization has broadened my scope of the design industry here in the Atlanta and the design community at large.
5.
Although a space is never truly finished, when do you know you are “done” with a project? Every project demands something different; I know I’m done with a project when it evokes a feeling of “completeness” for me. This is found through much layering then editing until the space is balanced.
9.
What were you doing before you started your own firm? I was actually in fashion before interior design. I lived in Manhattan full time and somehow I’d managed to avoid the D&D Building??? One trip there, and I was hooked. Within a year, I was enrolled in design school. Now I ‘m a certified interior design junkie...with credentials.
10. In our technology driven world, what is
your favorite form of social media to promote your business? Instagram is my favorite! It’s so much fun to have a window into what inspires and motivates fellow creatives.
