Dear Fellow Members, reetings from your ASID Georgia Chapter President!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Janie K. Hirsch, ASID J. Hirsch Interior Design, LLC 404.395.3711 President@ga.asid.org

What an exciting way to start off a new year for our chapter! We began in Boston in July with the Executive Board attending the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference. It was thrilling to see what a fantastic group of members we have to serve on our board this year. We built great relationships while learning all about our board positions and what is happening at National headquarters and across the country. We quickly learned that the GA Chapter is definitely a premier chapter with great events and an active membership.

President-Elect Craig Anderchak, ASID VeenendaalCave, Inc. 404.881.1811 x246 President-elect@ga.asid.org Financial Director Steve Hart, Allied ASID Heery Design 404.946.2138 Finance@ga.asid.org Membership Director Luisa Corrales, Allied ASID 678.595.3413 Membership@ga.asid.org

I have to say that the comments and questions we all received throughout the conference made me extremely proud to be a part of the GA Chapter. We even have the New York Metro Chapter asking about our Design Excellence Awards and other events. I hope that you are all very proud of what we have here in our not so little city of Atlanta.

Professional Development Darren Joel, Industry Partner of ASID TecnoSedia 404.810.9081 ProfessionalDevelopment@ga.asid.org

To kick off the beginning of my time as your President, we had the pleasure of spending an evening at The Alliance Theater for our Annual Meeting. We shared a video message from ASID CEO Randy Fiser where he welcomed everyone and spoke about the leadership we have here in GA and on a national level. We also had Fernando Arias, National Director of Strategic Initiatives, give a presentation on the impact of design and ASID Academy. If you missed it, please visit the website to find out more.

Student Representative Macy Dwyer, Student ASID 770.561.3845 StudentRep@ga.asid.org

In looking ahead at what this year will bring, we will continue to develop programs for our students and emerging professionals, as they are the future of our organization. We will once again visit all of the ASID Student Chapters throughout the state and encourage them to get involved. We are also excited to bring you the second Art Auction in the spring, followed by the Design Excellence Awards in May at the fabulous Fox Theater.

A few additions that we are adding will be a Tour of Homes with ASID Designers’ projects, Residential and Commercial Roundtables, the STEP class to prepare for the NCIDQ licensing exam, along with many CEU courses. I hope that you will all join me in celebrating ASID and making this year the best yet. As always, please feel free to reach out to me, or any of the ASID Board of Director members. Cheers to a fabulous year!

Keynote Speaker: ASID Director, Strategic Initiatives, Fernando Arias

The 2015 ASID Annual Meeting was held at the beautiful Alliance Theater in October. Closing out a fabulous term and adding over 95 new members, increasing sponsorship levels and “expanding the brand, Kerry Howard turned over his ASID Presidency to Janie Hirsch. Hirsch will continue to promote some of the many events Howard pursued such as the Design Excellence Awards and the Art Auction. One of the main things Kerry focused in on was outreach to Interior Design students and the ASIDGA student chapters. Janie plans to remain in touch with the students through the events that are hosted and by visiting all of the GA student chapters in the coming year. Hirsch intends to revive the STEP Program, which helps our members prepare for the NCIDQ licensing exam. She also wishes to work with industry partners to offer additional CEU classes throughout the year. The central focus for the upcoming year will be an ASID Tour of Homes, which will feature 4-5 homes from current ASID Interior Designers.

We think a lot about how our clients use their spaces, and one thing that stands out is how those uses have changed over time. Our designs have mirrored the changing, relaxed way people use their homes today. Then as young designers come onboard, they bring new perspectives, which gives us new inspiration.

With the advent of so many design shows on television, this seems common, but I’ve done it since the start of Pineapple House, and back then (1981) it was very unusual. We ask clients to leave their home in our hands – without them in it. The practical reason is to allow our team to be creative in the space to ‘think’ and ‘curate’, without the client looking over our shoulder during the creative process of finishing up the home. Then, once it’s all done, the client arrives for the ‘reveal’ and the effect is so much more powerful.

Pineapple House has set themselves apart in our industry for over 30 years How does your team stay continuously inspired?

2.

How did the creative name of your company transpire?

I began Pineapple House in the early 1980’s and traditional interiors were KING. Those were the days of historic preservation and Colonial Williamsburg. Being a ‘southern design company’, I adopted a longstanding symbol of ‘Southern Hospitality’ – the Pineapple – as my symbol. The sentiment is still there – warmth and hospitality – but the thrust of these interiors has moved decidedly more modern.

3.

What changed within Pineapple House which moved the company from more decorating projects to ground-up projects, which are more prevalent in your work today?

When I started Pineapple House, I had recently graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology in architecture [in addition to his existing interior design degree]. I knew I wanted to immerse myself in all aspects of the design and building process, but realized it would be incremental. Over the years, I have been able to expand to the allinclusive firm we are today.

4.

What is your favorite city you have visited for a design project? Why?

A small community north of Toronto, Canada, called Bigwin Island. The project is on an island with no bridge access. All our site visits and furniture deliveries were by boat. It is an amazingly beautiful area, carved out by receding glaciers. Once we had to delay our trip visit until the lake froze over so we could access it via snow-mobiles. Nothing quite like it!

5. What do you and/or your design team do to “de-stress”?

Since we spend so much time together traveling, we treat ourselves to some of the better restaurants in the cities we visit. We are currently working in the (very modern) south Florida area and recently ate at a new restaurant within the historic ‘Breakers Hotel’ call HMF. It’s a vast open restaurant, located in the belle-epoch inspired former ballroom, with European tapestries, and classical, gilded architecture – a total contrast to the modern aesthetic of the area. Great food, mixed with inspiring surroundings, puts us at ease and feeds our creative juices.

Pineapple House does something very unique with your client reveals at the completion of a project – please tell us about this.

7. Designers are overlapping so many design styles now - do you and your team have a favorite design style or blend?

Not really, although I admit I do favor the cleaner, more sparse look that is popular today. That may be a function getting older, but actually you see it in all age brackets – a striving for simplicity. All styles and periods can be and are beautiful. There are no categorically ‘wrong’ styles. It’s all in the execution.

8.

Your team does a spectacular job finishing spaces, all the way to the finest architectural details. What is your favorite architectural element to incorporate?

As we’ve developed the firm, it became obvious that the architectural elements of the interior are critical. So we started studying the floors, walls and ceilings of every project to see what improvements we could make. We then layer on the furniture, art and accessories. So we look at the project as a whole – including exterior spaces. The overall combination of elements is what makes a successful interior.

9.

How has ASID GA enhanced your business and/or design relationships?

I have been a member of ASID since 1976, so it’s been a long, wonderful association. ASID gave me professional gravitas early on, and to this day is recognized as the premier design organization. The efforts ASID has made toward licensing and public outreach have turned public perception of our industry from viewing us as a cottage industry, into the serious profession that we are today.

10. What main piece of advice would you give

an interior designer who wants to start their own business?

Communication, or what are called ‘people-skills’, are the #1 activity you’ll be engaged in. You have to be able to first understand what your client is really saying, and then be able to clearly and forcefully present your ideas back to them. Of course you should understand your field and have good taste, but the real work is how you interact with your clients.
