Greetings ASID Georgia Members, Fall and the ensuing holidays are always my favorite time of year. A chance to slow down the hustle and enjoy some quality time with those we care about most. I value the time off as a chance to recharge and focus on all the possibilities of the year ahead. I hope that you were able to do the same this holiday season and I wish you all the best in 2019! We had a wonderful Wine Stroll on the Westside on November 29th. A huge thank you goes out to our marvelous hosts of the event – Serena & Lily, Design Within Reach, Hudson | Grace, The Shade Store, and Birdie. We could not have had such a successful night without your support! ASID Georgia also partnered in the Red & Green Scene’s annual holiday party at the Woodruff Art Center’s Galleria. What an exciting evening of fellowship with other members of our design community while supporting Sustainable Design Collaborative Atlanta and Toys for Tots. This issue focuses on two great exhibits that we are fortunate to have here in Atlanta – MODA’s Architecture for Everyone and the High Museum’s Yayoi Kusama “Infinity Mirrors”. I know that you will join me in supporting the arts and culture of the city by visiting these remarkable exhibits. We have many fabulous events planned for the new year, including our annual Student Day, Emerging Professionals Amplify event, the Art Auction and, of course, the Design Excellence Awards in the spring. I am also excited to share that we are kicking off a new event this winter geared towards educating and interacting with the public. Design Day, which will take place at Avalon in some of our favorite industry partners retail locations, will be moderated discussions for the public on various industry related topics. If you are interested in attending, sponsoring or volunteering at any of these events, please reach out to the ASID office and speak with our friendly and helpful administrator, Keigh. In closing, I wanted to send a warm welcome to our newest ASID Georgia members and thank our existing membership for their support. The Board and I look forward to serving you this next year – may it be prosperous for all! Best, Kristin Kong, ASID ASID Georgia Chapter | President 2018-2019

Q 2.

What markets are included in the commercial design floor and which market have you seen grow the most recently? Why do you think that is?

A This is an all-encompassing hub of commercial design

4.

What design element is inspiring you right now in commercial OR residential?

A There are so many exciting developments from innovations in materials and technology to inspiring creative combinations. The latest color palettes of colors inspired by natural elements brings an organic element to design that’s both soothing and elevating. And, the addition of integrated technology to furniture with built in USB ports and charging docks opens new possibilities for placement and expanded use as people choose to live and work in more connected environments.

so there are options for every entity – Hospitality, Senior Living, Student Housing, multi-family spaces and more. In the current environment, there’s growth across multiple sectors, but Senior Living is especially robust as the country’s population ages and looks for more efficient, more desirable housing options.

DESIGN with a SOCIAL IMPACT As designers, we hold a critical eye to the world around us. Spotting good design can be personally rewarding, but can it go beyond just that? Can design actually DO good? MODA’s current exhibit, Design for Good: Architecture for Everyone answers that question. Showcasing over a dozen projects from architects and designers around the globe, Design for Good: Architecture for Everyone highlights projects that have a social impact on their local environments and seek to better the lives of their end users. Inspired by author John Cary’s book, Design for Good: A New Era of Architecture for Everyone, MODA Executive Director, Dr. Laura Flusche worked with the author himself, to develop the exhibit. In a process that took nearly nine months of development, Cary amassed a collection of architectural models, photographs and design documents which illustrate how these specific projects provide a sense of belonging and dignity. With exhibits designed by Susan Sanders, visitors get a taste of how each project answers a social need for its community and at the same time challenges the notion that good design is created only for those who pay high dollar.

continued from page 31

Highlights of the current exhibit include Bait ur Rouf Mosque in Dhaka, Bangladesh, designed by Marina Tabassum Architects which won the 2016 Aga Khan Award for architecture for its beautiful use of natural light and handmade bricks, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, in Montgomery, AL, designed by MASS Design Group which commemorates the victims of lynching in the United States in order to acknowledge the past of racial terrorism in the search for social justice, and Urugo Women’s Opportunity Center in Kayonza, Rwanda, designed by Sharon Davis Design which serves as a training center and gathering place for the women of the war-torn nation. The Women’s Opportunity Center was designed in collaboration with the

humanitarian organization Women for Women International, and as an interactive feature of the MODA exhibit, visitors may write letters of encouragement and empowerment to the women assisted by the organization.

Housed in an arguably stark concrete building in Midtown Atlanta, MODA or Museum of Design Atlanta balks at the traditional white wall minimalism characteristic to typical museum design and presents itself as an ever-changing gallery which focuses on user experience. With three exhibitions a year, MODA is the only museum in the Southeast devoted exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design.
