H
ey Family! It’s springtime! I’m inspired!
Spring brings about a fresh wind and a sense of purpose as this diligent ASID family continues to divide and conquer. We are a fortuitous organization who keeps pressing forward no matter the challenges. AND I LOVE IT! Here’s what’s going on with us….
President’s Letter
You all know, we’ve been playing a little “catch up”. Our 2017 Ruby Awards shifted into the 2017-18 Board year. BUT, WE DID IT! It was a great event and we tried some new things (Some things we’ll keep and other things, not so much…we heard you!). Nevertheless, you did as you always do, you showed up in great numbers to support your TXGC family! And to be sure, we get to do it all again in just about 7 or 8 months!
In addition, we had a really energetic, informative and fun Annual Meeting on January 23rd, sponsored by Cosentino. It too was pushed from its usual time frame. BUT, yet again, it was well attended! We had a blast with a wonderful CEU, tasty treats & signature drinks, a slab giveaway, Legislative update, quick review of 2016-17 chapter successes honoring our Sponsors, Committee Chairs, Admin & Board of Directors, a great fellowship and my favorite…dancing. We’ve heard great reviews and the excitement of this year’s events is buzzing. I am also happy to share that we had quite a few members sign up for committees! YES, we still need YOU too…I’m just saying!
So, here’s a little trivia for you: The Policy and Procedures of our organization have to be reviewed every 3rd year? Well, as we conduct the business and programs of ASID, things change. The Board votes on new policies and they are incorporated into the living document that helps us to operate with best practices. I want to shout out to the Policy and Procedures Committee for their continued work behind the scenes. Surely, they update the document throughout the year, but just recently they’ve met to do the daunting 3rd year review (line by line) of the document for Board approval. We don’t hear much about this committee or the Hospitality Committee, but they are always on task!
Thank you to the Nominations Committee and to Janie (and David) for working expeditiously to follow the National guidelines for a successful and on-time nominations process! Congratulations to the newly voted President-Elect Sari Karki-Rajabi, Membership Director Alison Dominguez and At-Large Director Nubia Heinz.
Don’t miss what’s coming! It’s easy to click delete as we receive so many chapter E-blasts. It’s truly a sign of a busy, supportive chapter. I pray the informative E-blasts find you ready to participate and get involved in all that applies to you. Here’s what is on the horizon….
SUPPORTINGOURSURROUNDINGCOMMUNITY • Community Outreach Committee is back…stayed tuned
SUPPORTINGOURSTEWARDSHIPEFFORTS • Alternative Revenue ideas coming • Campaign to INCREASE our chapter membership • SPONSORSHIP re-enrollment and new avenues

- 6 - SPRING 2018 | TEXAS GULF COAST CHAPTER
By Jay Crowe, ASID The Annual Meeting held on January 23rd at Cosentino was such a great time and well attended by ASID and IP members. A CEU was held before the meeting, awards were handed out to recognize everyone’s volunteer service from the previous year. As Shundra stated in her President’s letter, the current Board of directors was introduced, legislative updates were shared, chapter successes were honored, and we were all inspired for the coming year! We added volunteers to committees for this year and would love to have more! Cosentino gave a wonderful party and we danced, drank and ate our way through it to our great enjoyment.

Cork: The Natural Choice
By Greg Schenck, Founder: Schenck & Company All floors are not created equal. And it turns out, neither are the subfloors upon which wood floors are laid. Nothing compares to natural cork. Creating, installing, and preserving fine wood floors has been my business since I founded Schenck & Company in 1982. Over the years, we’ve experimented with a variety of subfloors and acoustic membranes. Before we landed on cork, we used a vinyl product for high-rise installations requiring an acoustic membrane. Vinyl is a cost-effective option, but it has to be installed using a water-based adhesive, which can fail with even minimal water damage. The search for a less-vulnerable acoustic membrane finally led us to cork. And we’ve never looked back. While it comes at a slightly higher price point than some other materials, most people find that it’s well worth the investment. The benefits are many. Corkissuperquiet. It’s the ideal acoustic barrier for high-rise projects because of its remarkable sound-absorption capabilities. Walk into an apartment with a cork acoustic membrane and you can actually hear the difference. Or more likely, you’ll hear nothing at all.
It’seasyontheknees. Cork is composed of millions of air-filled cells, making it an excellent natural insulator that’s gentle on your joints. Its ability to absorb shock really makes a difference in the way you feel at the end of a day. It’slong-wearing. Durable and resilient, cork subfloors and acoustic membranes are built to last. It’ssustainable. Cork is a sustainable product harvested from tree bark, in a process that doesn’t damage the trees. It’shypo-allergenic.It doesn’t emit volatile organic compounds, and it’s mold, mildew-, and insect-resistant, making it a good choice for people prone to allergies. Quiet, durable, easy on your joints, and kind to the planet. What’s not to love? Suffice it to say, we’re stuck on cork.

Calling all Industry Partners Think you don’t need a peer group? THINK AGAIN! By Ray Levy, ASID IP
Regardless of the type business you’re in, a well-organized Peer Group can help you succeed. Your Peer Group will help define your goals and objectives. You are among equals, other Industry Partners. You can be in regional sales, office management or the owner of your own business, it doesn’t really matter. There is nothing like a Peer Group to get you on the right track, going in the right direction. When you help solve issues your fellow members bring to the table, you are indirectly solving your own concerns. You cannot do everything on your own. A Peer Group can be your personal, “Board of Directors”, a sounding board for private anxieties and fears. In addition to the help you can get from Peer member’s. You will gain friends that will refer you when and if the time arises.

INDUSTRY PARTNER
Update
By Pamela Cortes, Director-at-Large
Family is the strongest bond so when I say, “We are ASID Family”, I mean it with whole heartedness! We celebrated the New Year with our Industry Partner Orientation back in January with a great turnout of new and current members. We did it “family style” with everyone bringing delicious side dishes, shared our experiences about the benefits of our membership, and of course did some dancing too! As our Chapter President, Shundra Harris always says, “We’re taking it to the next level!” and that we are! My biggest advice to new members is get involved – be active in your investment and you will see the ROI. Joining an IP Peer Group is a great opportunity to meet fellow Industry Partners, discuss business ideas, refer business, and collaborate with others on projects with Interior Designers. I’m proud to say that our Chapter has numerous committees so there is something for everyone. Our IP Steering Committee will be hosting a networking event on April 11th at BowlMor for some team bowling. IPs team up with designers for some fun competition between each other to win some great prizes. Later this year our Chapter will be hosting more fun events such as; Expo, Design Awards and our Annual Meeting…aka another party! Are you noticing a trend of fun?! Our Gulf Coast Chapter is full of opportunity, fun and great people – We are ASID Family!

There was a large turnout of
ASID members "For the Love of Daltile" held at the
Richmond Showroom on
Tuesday, February 13. We were all given a canvas,
paints and brushes to make a
painting of our own with the help of Alexandra with
Psalms Arts. It was great fun,
the food was good and we all
really enjoyed the evening!
