40 Years, One Voice. The past couple of months were very busy for the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter!
First, a huge “thank you” goes to our Sponsorship Committee for a great Sponsor Appreciation Party this past May. President Elect Martha Lurie was kind enough to open her beautiful residence to receive our gracious Sponsors, and give a formal appreciation for all their contributions to the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. I tip my hat to Mary Wilson, Debra Sabrsula and Amilee Wendt for creating such a memorable

event. The hope was to share our love with our wonderful sponsors, and it was well received!
Also, I recently attended the Houston Community College Portfolio Show. Shasta Swift and Kevin Hamby coordinated a wonderful evening for their graduating seniors at the Decorative Center Houston. It was great to meet up-and-coming interior designers as they presented their creative works. They also facilitated a great collaboration pairing culinary and design students, creating a unique restaurant design concept and food experience!
Lastly, our Awards committee is excited to announce this year’s Call to Entry for the ASID Design Awards. Starting June 1st and ending July 31st, please be sure to submit your entries before the deadline.

The Social Network By Suly Weissman, Interior Designer - Allied ASID It has been an exciting season at the Social Network! We welcomed new members, caught up with familiar faces, and have enjoyed every single one of our fun and engaging events! It is so incredible to see how much we have grown, and especially to see everyone having a good time while enjoying the venues that welcome us with open arms. March was such a fun evening. It started with a bit a rain but that didn't stop many of you that joined us at Julep. Owner, Alba Huerta, who was recently named one of Food & Wine’s top 10 mixologists, spoke with us about her passion, her vision, and where the inspiration of her venue came from. It was quite an honor to have met her, and she made us feel right at home. April was quite a night a La Colombe D'or as it is both a stunning and breath taking space. The tour of the Hotel, the Ball Room, and Art Gallery was amazing – almost like being taken back in time. Attendance was really phenomena, and the Adopt a Design Student partnership at the event was incredibly successful. Everyone had a chance to socialize and network in a very intimate setting.

Adopt-a-Design Student Program… Helping Students “Get a Foot in the ASID Door” By Pam Cortes We all know the saying, “you have to get your foot in the door” to start somewhere, right? The Adopt-a-Design Student Program is doing just that with 46 students and still counting! With the gracious help of our ASID Designers and Industry Partners the program keeps growing by helping design students feel more comfortable and excited to participate in ASID events. We had a lot of fun promoting the program at the April Social at La Colombe D’or by taking French-themed photos! Soon, we plan to have a website with easy access for students to register, join an ASID Committee, along with other great features. This is a fun, energetic program that is growing the ASID TGCC so come join in the fun and sponsor a design student! Please contact the new Chairperson of the program, Pam Cortes of Echo Workshop, at Pamela@echoworkshop.com, or Kendra at the ASID TGCC office if you are interested in becoming a Sponsor for a student or have any questions about the Adopt-a-Design Student Program. D.I.V.A.S By Jay Crowe, ASID, RID, CAPS Several ASID members have been involved with projects for The Houston Furniture Bank, this group is known as the D.I.V.A.S. We are a group within the Furniture Bank that takes donated furniture, accessories, bedding, art, or anything that we can to go into a deserving family’s home. Items are repurposed for decorating, transforming their space into a more personal home for these families. It is so heart warming to see children, who may not have had their own room before, to now have one that is designed around their wants and likes. Designers, please remember us when you are replacing your client’s furniture, bedding, and accessories with new items. Their old items are greatly appreciated for our projects. For more information, please contact Jay Crowe at jaycrowedesign@att.net or 713-666-6232, or The Houston Furniture Bank at 713-842-9771, or check out www.houstonfurniturebank.org.

ASID TGCC is Taking Students to METROCON! By Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID Last year, ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter took 17 ASID students, 6 designers and 5 underwriters to Metrocon in Dallas and it was such a success that we are doing it again! This year, we are taking 34 students, 8 designers and 8 underwriters! Dates of the event are Thursday, August 13 – Friday, August 14. Student sign-ups began March 31 and will close July 1, 2015. Space is filling up fast so get your student applications in as soon as possible!
Another way Designers and IP members can participate is to donate to the swag bags we hand out on the trip. Last year we gave an insulated lunch bag with ASID logo, notebook and pen with ASID logo, mini architect scale and snacks. It would be great to have even more great things that the students could really use…like a tape measure or mini architect scale. Or things they don’t really need but really love…Toblerone chocolate, $10 Starbucks card for a few of “lucky” bags , cookies, pistachios, etc. Please contact Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID to reserve your spot and/or donate for swag bags. Phone: 713-269-4505 Email: Crystal@CLRdesignservices.com Thank you all for your continued support of our students!!!
Students, designers and underwriters who attended last year considered the experience priceless. We had trivia games, one on one time between designers and mentors, an amazing dinner Thursday night, portfolio review/lunch at Metrocon and much more. However, although the experience is priceless, the cost to take 50 people is NOT. Items included in this trip are hotel, transportation, food and conference fees. With that said, we need designers and IP members to help underwrite the event. There are three levels with various prices and benefits listed below – spaces on top two levels are limited due accommodation availability. Donations for Swag Bags are also appreciated. Title Underwriter - $3000 • One Spot: (Spot is taken by Ferguson - includes Thermador, DXV and Victoria & Albert) • Attend event with ASID TGCC (including overnight hotel stay, transportation, food, basic conference costs) • Participate in Underwriter Trivia Contest/Scavenger Hunt and/or other games. • Networking with all attendees • Give tour of company booth at Metrocon with entire group • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (3 slides – one shared with all underwriters and two separate slides only for Title Underwriter) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags Gold Underwriter - $1000 • Six Spots: (One spot is taken by Scene One Interiors. There are 5 more available) • Attend event with ASID TGCC (including overnight hotel stay, transportation, food, basic conference costs) • Participate in Underwriter Trivia contest • Networking with all attendees • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (1 slide shared with all underwriters) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags Silver Underwriter - $500 • Unlimited Spots • Recognition at ASID TGCC Awards (1 slide shared with all underwriters) • Recognition on all ASID TGCC Metrocon media /marketing materials • Flyer/Product info in goodie bags

Spring of 2017, Practicum becomes computerized NCIDQ exam is going digital (tell your interns and ask them to tell their friends.) The Council for Interior Design Qualifications (CIDQ) recently announced a big change coming up: the practical portion of their NCIDQ exam, called the PRAC, will switch from hand-sketching to a computerized format. The change is expected to take place starting in the spring of 2017. CIDQ reports that in 2014 the organization undertook an intensive project to ensure that the transition goes smoothly. They synthesized their research with outside recommendations, developed a timeline, consulted with a specialized vendor, and called up a task force to export written practicum questions to a digital environment. This year, CIDQ plans to further ensure the exam’s defensibility, by testing and validating exam questions and developing software. If you are a mentor or supervisor to a future Texas RID, we urge you to let your intern know about this development. The same is true for accredited design programs, student groups, and study groups, so please lend TBAE a hand in informing examination candidates current and future of this bold

new direction from CIDQ. If you have questions about the computer-based exam, CIDQ can be reached at info@ncidgexam.org.
Look at the Timeline this way: 1. The IDFX Multiple Choice exam is a 3 hour exam at a site with computerized testing. 2. The IDPX Multiple Choice exam is a 4 hour exam at a site with computerized testing. 3. The Practicum presently is a hand-sketching exam administered at a local site (usually a hotel or Art Institute facility). All day process usually 6 or 7 hours. The last exam period for hand sketching is the Fall of 2016, the digital PRAC starts in the Spring of 2017 4. In fact, there are only 3 more opportunities for GF RIDs to sit for the exam using the skill of hand drawing the space plan according to the codes given on the exam. ONLY the next 3 exams administered in 2015 and 2016 will use hand-drawing. Do NOT PANIC, the new format in 2017 WILL NOT require knowledge of CAD. If you can drag and drop images on your computer (as you would to create a PowerPoint or Word doc) or can learn this easy technique, the digital format should not be intimidating. You will see a drawing and the exam will ask you to drag and drop a (grab bar, for example) on the drawing at the correct height.

5. The date of September 1, 2017 closes the opportunity for GF RIDs to sit for the exam IF Registration Renewal is the goal and all sections have to be passed by that date.
Information below is copied from the TBAE website, (May 17, 2015) Q: What changed for Texas Registered Interior Designers (RIDs)? A: The new law requires all RIDs who have not yet passed the NCIDQ exam (or the ARE, see below) to do so by September 1, 2017. Those who do not pass the exam by that date will not be permitted to renew their RID licenses. Q: Does this requirement apply to all statuses of RIDs, or just to Active status RIDs? A: The requirement applies to all statuses of RIDs. Active, Inactive, and Emeritus status RIDs will all need to meet the same requirement. Q: Which bill contained this new requirement? A: HB 1717 of the 83rd Texas Legislature, Regular Session, contains the provision making this change. NO changes to this in the 84th Legislative Session which will end June 1, 2015. Q: Who administers the exam, how much does it cost, and what else do I need to know about fees? A: The required examination is provided through the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications, or NCIDQ. (Recently that organization changed its name to CIDQ and left the name of the exam “NCIDQ,” but for simplicity we will refer to both as NCIDQ.) As of today, the NCIDQ exam costs a total of $1,010.00 for all three parts. Current RIDs will not owe TBAE any additional fees to take the test, though they will need to pay NCIDQ’s test-taking fees. TBAE has no control over fees charged by outside organizations. If you are an RID also registered as an architect, see below for more information particular to your situation. Q: What if I have only passed one or two of the three exam parts by the deadline? A: It is our understanding that all three parts of the exam must be passed in order to maintain an RID license after September 1, 2017. This means the last testing opportunity to take all 3 parts is Spring of 2017 when the Digital PRAC begins and hand drawing is not used. Q: What do I need to do to become eligible to sit for the exam? A: Simply email exams@tbae.state.tx.us or call 512-305-9000 and we will get you set up. There is no charge for this process, and all you need to tell us is your name, your date of birth, correct email address, and that you would like to be listed as eligible to sit for the NCIDQ exam. Q: How do I confirm, for 100 percent sure, whether I need to pass the examination to maintain my license after 2017? A: The simplest way to be absolutely sure of your status is to simply call us at 512-3059000 to check. And if it turns out that you do need to pass the test, we can get you on the list during the same quick phone call.

Q: How many test administrations are there before the September 1, 2017 deadline? A: Eight. NEW NUMBER 3 + 1. When this was posted on the TBAE website, but as of May 17, 2015, there are 3 in the present exam format and 1 in the all digital format in the Spring of 2017.) Two administrations are given per year, each spring and fall. The upcoming exam administration is in October, 2015, and if you would like to register for that administration, time is short. Becoming eligible to sit for the exam is simple, free, and handled through TBAE, not through NCIDQ. Simply call us at 512-3059000 or email exams@tbae.state.tx.us and tell us (1) your full name, (2) your date of birth, and (3) your preferred email address for receiving important information.
Legislative Update By Donna Vining, NCIDQ, FASID, IIDA, RID, CAPS, REGREEN Trained™ Executive Director, TAID The 84th session of the Texas legislature convened on January 13th. The legislature has many new faces. Governor Greg Abbott is the first new Governor in 15 years and he is the first Governor to have a Hispanic wife and be in a wheelchair. Dan Patrick, Houston, is the first new Lt Governor in 12 years. Ken Paxton is the state’s new attorney general. Texas has a 140 day session every odd numbered year. Once again, this session, we had an interior design deregulation bill filed by Senator Huffines. The good news I am happy to report is we were able to keep the bill from having a committee hearing and as I type this, the clock is winding down in Austin and there is very little chance of the bill making it through. The session ends on June 1st. The other good news I am able to share is the $200.00 professional tax has been eliminated and the effective date is 9/1/2015. There were many other bills filed this year that TAID kept their eye on as they might impact our business in some way but as of this moment most of those have not passed. As always if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Donna@SupportTAID.org.
