In our last newsletter, I mentioned why our Strategic Plan’s goals and objectives were so important. Each month the Board uses our strategic plan to determine whether or not the actions we are taking are moving us closer to achieving our goals. Over the course of this year, I hope to share with you the many ways we are meeting those goals. A brief summary of our strategic plan is included in this newsletter. Be the Central Network of the Design Community. Your Board actively seeks meaningful opportunities to connect you with customers, industry partners, members of the design community and those that influence our practices. On February 4th, at our Annual Meeting, Randy Fiser, Executive Vice President and CEO of ASID will share findings from a National study, “ASID Industry Outlook.” Each Board member will also be present to discuss with you specific activities planned throughout the year to help you Expand Your Knowledge and Develop Your Practice. Please join us at Eggersmann at the Decorative Center Houston for this very informative and fun-filled event! We recently completed an audit of our communication databases and made the decision to streamline our processes by utilizing ASID National’s database for our directory and future communications. What we learned is that over the years many of our members have opted out of receiving emails. We are revisiting our email practices and will be reaching out to you to “opt back in.” We are exploring ways to minimize the number of emails while maximizing the relevant content. By opting back in, you will receive timely information on the many collaborative relationships with design centers, industry partners, magazines, social media outlets and design organizations we are forming or expanding to provide you with additional ways to reach prospective clients, grow and manage your business. In December, Angel Rios was promoted at Hokanson Carpet and moved to New York City. As Director at Large on our Board, Angel was always looking for the best ways to solve problems, devising new solutions and developing new partnerships. We will miss his kind spirit and wish him all the very best in his new position. Larry Boykin, President of Image Electric was voted to take Angel’s position on the Board. Welcome Larry! We could not do all that we do as an organization without the tremendous support of our hardworking volunteers. The resources, time and talent that our members contribute is invaluable. We are building on the strengths of one another, forming new friendships and having lots of fun! We have many ways for you to get involved and see your investment in your organization grow. Reach out to a Board member and we will connect you to the growing excitement of ASID!
Sincerely, Debra Sabrsula, Allied ASID President ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter 2013-2014

2013 ASID Design Awards By Siri Roark On October 25th, over 220 designers, IP members and guests gathered at the Bayou Center Events Center to celebrate winners of the 2013 ASID Design Awards. The evening’s festivities began with spirited cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the foyer. Our newest IP member, Ft. Bend Music Center generously donated the pianist and a baby grand piano that provided music for the cocktail and dinner hours. Photo antics ensued with the addition of a “Smile Booth” for the evening! A big thank you to Houston Design Resources, Eggersmann Kitchens/Home Living, Peck & Company, and Legrand for underwriting the Smile Booth at this year’s event. No doubt we will be seeing the Smile Booth at future ASID events! A special thank you to this year’s entire Awards Event Committee, Chaired by Michelle Maresh, Siri Roark and Punita Valambhia.
After members and guests enjoyed wine and dinner, Mary Wilson began the evening’s proceedings with a thank you to her 2012-2013 ASID Board and 2013 Sponsors. She then introduced the new ASID President, Debra Sabrsula and the 2013-2014 Board. This year there were 38 Residential Design Awards – 18 Residential Winners and 20 Honorable Mentions. Commercial Design showcased seven Winners and five Honorable Mentions. Our Industry Partner submissions continue to grow with 2013’s seven IP Winners and eight Honorable Mentions. Additionally, there were seven Winners in the Emerging Professionals category and nine Residential and Commercial Student Winners. Thank you everyone who participated – those who submitted projects, all the committee members, special contributors for their generous donations and most of all for our guests that attended the Awards Event. As the evening concluded, attendees were treated to another wonderful “Swag Bag” of thoughtful and imaginative gifts and mementoes from Designers and IP members. Congratulations to all our 2013 Winners!

Andres Vanegas won Scariest, Kevin Bertelsman won Most Creative, I (Michelle Stream) won Best Homemade and Andrea Kralj won Best In Show as the counterpart to my costume, Duck Dynasty – in case you all were wondering why I was a duck. November’s event at the Brooklyn Athletic Club was a huge success but came with a sad note. We gathered to say goodbye to a very special friend, board member and IP - Angel Rios. You will be missed and NY is lucky to get you! We took a “break” in December, only for us to help with the Deck the Tables event at HDC. Punita Valambhia did an incredible job with her table which was superbly executed utilizing many of our wonderful IPs. It was a huge success!
Looking toward the future, we want to encourage you to look to the second Tuesday of each month for our events. If we divert from that it is only due to venue or calendar conflicts. On the docket is the St. Genevieve, recently remodeled by our own Laura U, along with 1919 Wine & Mixology and even the Hotel Zaza! Please join us if you haven’t already!!! Special thanks to my team Andrea Kralj, Judy Bonica, Dana & Evan Soltoff, Suly Weissman and our newest member, Crystal Reeves. We are always looking for new members, so please contact me if you are interested! michellestream@gmail.com

Professional Development
Focusing on Strengths By Janus Lazaris On November 6th, 2013, ASID hosted an enriching Leadership Strength Training Workshop by the nationally renowned author, speaker and coach Dr. Marj Barlow. Dr. Barlow spoke about identifying our strengths by leadership, as well as how to identify the strengths in others. Attended by the Board Members of ASID, including outgoing President Mary Wilson, and incoming President Debra Sabrsula, each attendee took the Gallup Strengths Finder 2.0 assessment prior to the workshop, revealing a cross section of strengths held by each member. The different divisions include relationship building, strategic thinking, influencing and executing. It was great to see that our leadership at ASID is strong and balanced across the different categories. The concepts introduced by Dr.Barlow encourage us to take new approaches toward professional development, helping us maximize our own potential while enabling us to build strong alliances around us. If you would like to find out what your strengths are visit the Gallup Strengths Finder website at www.strengthsfinder.com/home.aspx

LeGrand + ASID “Light Your Imagination” RAISES $10,000 FOR THE ASID FOUNDATION By Amy Collier Following a nationwide design competition, Legrand announced Lauren Rottet, Founding Principal and President of Rottet Studio, as the winner and 2014 Guest Designer of the adorne Collection. Rottet’s original wall plate (pictured below) was selected from a total of 170 submissions. Using a 3D printing technology to achieve its texture, precision and level of detail, Rottet’s winning wall plate features a pattern of beveled diamonds on a white surface. “I’m thankful to receive the distinction and be part of such a groundbreaking collection,” said Rottet, “The contest, as well as the broad range of Legrand products, has really opened my team’s eyes to exploring a design element that no longer has to rely on a standard, but can now be thought about as integral to the rest of the design vision. Most importantly, we were interested to see how the adorne platform could be coupled with the latest 3D printing technology in order to create a solution that could be fully customizable and unique to each project.”
Judges for the contest included Patricia Hickson, the Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art; Donna Vining, Executive Director of the Texas Association of Interior Design and ASID TGCC Financial Director; Halsey Cook, President of Legrand Electrical Wiring Systems; and Phil Prestigomo, Director of Industrial Design for Legrand, North America. Judging also included a popular vote via the Legrand Facebook and Pinterest page. You can view the entry’s on Legrands Pinterest page. “The adorne Collection began with a quest to reimagine the everyday light switch and wall plate, and Lauren Rottet’s design continues that spirit of ingenuity,” said Mario Gonzalez, vice president of marketing for the adorne Collection. “The plate’s style itself is something that can easily enhance a commercial, corporate, hospitality, or residential interior. Further to its versatility, it’s stunning—both for its aesthetic merit and its 3D printing production. With warm wishes, we’re thrilled to welcome Lauren into the Legrand family.” All of the contest’s wall plates were featured in a one-night-only exhibition on November 6 in New York City titled, “Light Your Imagination,” and the contest raised $10,000 for the ASID Foundation, donated by Legrand.

November Program Hosted by Cast Fireplaces, Inc. By Silver Hernandez, Allied ASID ASID members turned out in large numbers for the November program and enthusiastically embraced the hospitality of host and owner of Cast Fireplaces, Inc., Bob Milner, along with Ms. Charlie Gatling, Account Executive and staff. Cast Fireplaces made our members feel most welcome while introducing “the world’s most beautiful cast stone fireplace front showroom with many innovative products.” Mr. Luis Cortes, President of Echo Workshop, Custom Electronics Specialists, presented an informative, engaging CEU entitled, “Learning to Navigate Current Home Technology for Today’s Savvy Clients.” Our host provided a luncheon catered by Carraba’s Restaurant. There was food; wine; free t-shirts; goody bags; and three lucky winners of a fireplace surround; 32”flat screen TV and a Samsung notebook. Great fun was had by all. I would venture to say that any designer who attended would absolutely encourage their clients to embrace what Cast Fireplaces, Inc. has to offer.

The Successes of RealWorld DesignWeek By Whitney Hendrickson, Student ASID I had a wonderful experience at RWDW this year! I was able to follow a designer in the healthcare industry at a prestigious firm in Houston. I live out of town, but traveling was well worth it to be able to shadow a designer in the field I am interested in. It is such a rare opportunity as students to be able to see what you might really be doing after school. Our teachers in school try very hard, but they can never fully explain what the "real world" is like-you have to see it! To start the day, I was able to attend their weekly staff meeting. It was neat to see how the architects and designers work together and how different needs are met. Later, I observed as my mentor smartly handled various answers to many different projects by phone or email. It was intimidating to see how many different things she had going on at once! Again, another thing I needed to see before I could really understand what "multi-tasking" really was. Later, I was invited to join them at a networking lunch-which was also very interesting..and fun to get out of the office. The afternoon we spent in the sample room selecting finishes for a project she was working on. It was really interesting to see her process of selecting various finishes, and how important it is to train your "eye" to do this quickly. Lastly, my mentor and another colleague reviewed my portfolio-which was hugely helpful! It was nice to see, in a nopressure situation, what a professional thought of my work-truly humbling! Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I will never forget! It really reinforced to me that healthcare design is where I belong. As a student, we should really take advantage of different experiences and the confidence it brings! As always, ASID is pointing me in the right direction, and showing that the design professionals really have a genuine interest in my career development.
