TEXAS GULF COAST CHAPTER | WINTER 2016 - 3 -

I

can see the ASID Office from my front porch . . .

Well, actually I can't, but I do have a clear vision of our chapter and its future.

President’s Letter

The American Society of Interior Designers [ASID] Texas Gulf Coast Chapter is a community of people – designers, industry representatives, educators and students – committed to interior designwhich translates to - #ASID Family. As your chapter president, I commit and seek your commitment that our chapter members celebrate and embrace our unique community, culture and history in the year ahead.

I would like to thank MARTHA LAURIE, ASID, past president, and the 2015-16 Board for providing me with a formative and educational year as president-elect. Martha and the Board have navigated the chapter thorough a highly successful year both monetarily and professionally . Congratulations on a job well done! You know the old saying “What is old becomes new again”? Well here I am to prove this true. When I was asked to run for the position of president-elect and hence president (for the third time), I truly felt a much younger person should hold the position. But upon consideration, I came to believe that I hold a unique opportunity to assist with the transition from the old guard to the young, contributing hopefully some of my ASID wisdom. I have been a professional interior designer for 46 years and an educator for 21 of those. As an original member of ASID, from its founding 42 years ago, sometimes I feel the F at the beginning of my appellation, FASID, means “founding member”. My ASID journey has been one of friendship building, professional growth, and a trunk load of memories. Again - #ASIDFamily As my third (and final) term as your chapter president, I call upon each of you to assist in making this year an outstanding success. Be a Change Agent for ASID. I know the Board and I cannot do this job alone. I come into this office with goals to improve and advance the chapter, but that’s not going to work unless the board and I earn “buy-in” from the chapter members. I hope to instigate an approach for the chapter and by the chapter so we can end the year reflecting upon great progress and success. Much has changed since ASID was formed, and since I was last chapter president 30 years ago. The current state of the interior design profession, the technological environments along with membership expectations have shifted. I have had several members tell me to bring back the old ASID, the way it used to be. Sounds great, but I don’t think that is current reality. We have many opportunities as a chapter and as a professional organization ahead. We must and can look forward to change and success. And sense the current of change in the air! Take a look at ASID National’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan coming out soon. You will see a projected sift occurring over the next 5 years? As we enter ASID’s 43 year, the profession of interior design is rapidly changing, and with your assistance, the chapter is gearing up for these exciting changes. Our chapter will continue providing all members with the tools and resources to move the society and the profession forward. Be especially aware of the addition of the five pillars added to the strategic plan and how our chapter is incorporating them already.

5 PILLARS

1. DesignImpactsLife - publishing informative/educational articles for members and consumers 2.LivingtheBrand- sharing ASID’s message, represent the ASID brand to all stack holders 3.Communication - building an effective communication plan 4.DiversityandInclusion - creating an open and inclusive culture, grooming organizational leaders. building networks 5.AlternateRevenueStream - Member Directory, The Angle Newsletter, Show House, Design Awards As the Chapter Board moves forward working with our strategic plan and a sound budget, we embrace visions for the future, I will be looking to all of our members to volunteer, to provide constructive feedback and to demonstrate exemplary leadership so that we can achieve a culture continued on page 6

and community of professionalism and ASID family values. The Board exists to make the society responsible and beneficial to each of our members.

We the Board need your thoughts and ideas, but along with that also your enthusiasm and participation to put our goals and objectives into effect. The chapter cannot benefit its members until our members are specifically involved in the processes, events and projects of running the chapter. The Board must have the involvement of its members as an essential part of the life of the chapter. We must all nurture our chapter’s family. We are all in this together… . On Thursday, November 10, The ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Annual Meeting was hosted by Industry Partner Stephanie Samper of Walker Zanger. Approximately 100 members attended. Catering was provided by our new industry partner, Casseta. Owners Rebekah and Francesco Casseta provided a wonderful gourmet spread for attendees to savor. The annual meeting is the time to provide an overview of the chapter’s past year and accolades for chapter achievements. The prior year’s Board, Committee Chairs and Volunteers were given recognition for their endless contributions to our chapter. Past president, Martha Lurie, ASID assisted by president Dennis McNabb, FASID handed out certificates and awards of appreciation. The current board and the chapter administrator, Janie Moore, were introduced and industry partners present were recognized and applauded. A brief review of the past year was then presented by Dennis noting major highlights and events. Our guest speaker, Donna Vining, FASID provided us with an update of the upcoming legislative year which holds some challenges for the profession of Interior Design. Donna is our “Knower” of All Things Legislative for interior design. Thank you Donna for your ongoing contributions to our chapter in so many areas. A big thanks goes out to Walker Zanger and their gracious staff for hosting such a enjoyable event. It was truly a great success.

Furnishing a Home with a Grand Piano By Amanda Watson ASID IP, Piano Specialist with Steinway Piano Gallery

One of the biggest challenges faced by designers is a client who wants to add a grand piano to their fully furnished home, almost as an afterthought. This puts both the designer and the piano in a tough spot since the piano is not a small furniture item.

The most frequent challenges we face when trying to place a grand piano in a fully furnished home are space constraints, no nearby outlets for player pianos, lighting fixture placements that are not cohesive with the piano placement, and a limited seating area for those who wish to watch the piano keys as they are played. The best features of a grand piano are the keys and the curve where the lid is raised. Ideally, when you walk into a room you have a nice view of both. Many clients select a piano and add a player system that enables the piano to play by itself through an iPad or any device with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There is usually at least one member of the family who doesn’t play, but wants to equally enjoy their investment as much as the pianist. With a player piano much more thought needs to go into placement based on the outlet’s location and seating. Many piano owners like having an outlet located on the floor underneath the piano since the plug is located closest to the piano’s back leg. Others like the outlet on a nearby wall to disguise the cord. Additionally, the keys must be facing outward so people can enjoy watching the keys depress as the piano plays. Ideally, the moment when “remodeling” and/or “furnishing” comes up, the piano will be brought up even before the couch. With the variety of grand piano sizes available and the myriad of finishes and hardware options, the sky is the limit. For more info contact Amanda: awatson@steinwaypianos.com

METROCON Student Trip is Coming! By Crystal Reeves, ASID, RID What? Is it that time again already? Well…sort of… Please save the date for the Fourth Annual ASID Texas Gulf Coast FREE student trip to Dallas – Thursday, August 10, 2017 – Friday, August 1, 2017!! Last year, our chapter took a group of 32 Students/Designers/IP Underwriters to MetroCon in Dallas - an amazing regional expo and conference organized by the Texas Chapter of ASID and the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA. MetroCon focuses on introducing the latest in industry products and innovative ideas to the Southwest region’s communities as well as Student Programming which includes resume tips and portfolio reviews. But the most important thing that ALL of our students said they got out of it was the NETWORKING WITH DESIGNERS AND IP MEMBERS!! Where else would you have the ability to have a captive audience for two full days with design professionals? Plans are already in the works to shake things up for the trip in 2017! First and foremost, the MetroCon Committee is working together with the Student Affairs Committee and Adopt A Design Student Committee to plan a kickoff PARTY in February or March to tell everyone more about the event and…lets be honest…give us a reason to throw a party! Watch your emails for information. We not only get to go to MetroCon, but we play games on the bus together, enjoy happy hour and dinner, and even a little dancing with the house band from Sambuca’s! It’s a great opportunity for students to get one on one time with the designers an IP members that attend with us and get advice and hear fun stories!! Applications open up in March/April so get it in early!

Ellouise Abbott

INDUSTRY PARTNER AWARD

By Donna M. Jarnigan, ASID, RID and Jennifer Loh, ASID, RID Special Recognition Award Committee Chairs We are so pleased to present the highest Industry Partner award given by our ASID-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter, the “Ellouise Abbott Award”, to our own: Larry Boykin, ASID Industry Partner.

The Ellouise Abbott Award: Is only given to an Industry Partner who has devoted years of outstanding service to our Chapter. It is the highest honor that our Chapter can bestow upon an Industry Partner at the local level. This award was started in memory and honor of Ellouise Abbott, who was an outstanding Industry Partner and fiercely loyal friend to Interior Designers and sold her fabrics only “to the trade”. Check out her image from the 70’s. We are so proud of each of you and what you contributed to our profession! Thank you! Again, thank you and congratulations, Larry!

“We are the professionals for the professional”

It’s an election year, the votes are in and as the “other blonde” I am honored to be the new At-Large Director. Hello, my name is Pamela Cortes with Echo Workshop, a proud ASID Industry Partner since 2010. Mark your calendar for more Peer2Peer Meetings that will enhance your business, engage in some fun and exciting Speed Selling Events. Grab your sunglasses for the AIA Sandcastle Contest in Galveston! Who likes wine? Get your wine glass and taste buds ready for Fredericksburg next year! I am excited to team up with some great ASID Members to put all these events together.
