I

had the privilege of working closely with Frank Slesinski and our Palm Springs counterparts during the 2017 Modernism Week. Getting to know and appreciate each of them, their kindness, strength and talent was the highlight of the best Modernism Week in which ASIDLA has participated.

When faced with near disaster due to extreme inclement weather, unforeseen unprofessional behavior and product failure, everyone pulled together and made the impossible work. It was a lesson in professionalism, personal respect and responsibility that everyone should have the opportunity to experience. I am very happy to have made new friends and have also gained an elevated respect for the level of professionalism ASID designers maintain. I also commend our IP’s who jumped in and provided the back-up and manpower required to bring a wonderful weekend to fruition. The more I participate, the more I appreciate! n

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Los Angeles I just returned from the ASID President’s Forum in D.C. and am thrilled to share with you highlights from my experience. It was helpful to connect and learn from chapter Presidents from around the country – it has not only allowed me to gain valuable knowledge about where ASID as an organization is headed, but also informative on how individual chapters are reaching success in their own events and programming.

As an association, we have a lot of exciting changes ahead and I’m glad you are along for the ride! ASID National has been working carefully and strategically to position itself as the foremost expert in health and wellness as it relates to interiors and how they are constructed, maintained and occupied. Together with the International Well Building Institute (IWBI), I believe ASID will become known as the go-to resource for experts in this realm. If you are new to the International Well Building Institute and the Well Building Standard, I encourage you to visit www.wellcertified. com to learn more. Late last year I attended a full day Well Workshop that introduced me to the many variables that IWBI considers in making commercial spaces the heathiest, most productive and mindful locations on the planet. I am looking forward to alerting you to upcoming opportunities to learn more about the Well Standard in our area, so stay-tuned!

O n a local chapter level, there was one specific event that many ASID Chapter Presidents employ yearly to bring together and energize their design communities – a Design Award Gala. In Los Angeles, to have a successful design gala that acknowledges outstanding interior design needs to be nothing short of spectacular, and requires a dedicated, knowledgeable and energetic committee, but I am certain our chapter is up to the challenge. If you are interested in participating in a Design Gala Committee, contact Will at the ASID office so we can get this exciting work started.

Participating in the President’s Forum also reaffirmed my pride and excitement in our own local chapter happenings. Just a few worth shining a spotlight on is the Industry Partner Forum. Our Directorat-Large, Shelby Fowler, IP, Sherwin-Williams, has dedicated herself

to spearheading this endeavor, which provides a setting where IPs can come together to discuss issues aimed at expanding their opportunities for networking, industry knowledge and business success. More and more IPs have been attending these meetings and the feedback has helped identify ways both Designer and Industry Partner memberships can be enhanced. I encourage any IP interested in learning more to attend an upcoming meeting.

For designers, ASID’s Modernism program shepherded by our PresidentElect, Frank Slesinski, Allied ASID, was another overwhelming success. The Los Angeles board is especially excited to take part in the event to build stronger relationships with our new Palm Springs Designer and Industry Partner members. Although ASID LA has a history of participating in Palm Springs Modernism, this year ASID secured a booth at the Modernism show to promote the ASID brand and its members in the Palm Springs area. We are always excited to bring opportunities to our design communities outside of the Los Angeles area, and we look forward to developing events that resonate with our outlying members in a way that supports and enhances their ASID membership. O ne such event currently in the works will take place in Santa Barbara early this summer. Our Professional Development Director, Kelly Azzarello, Allied ASID, is directing this multi-day design experience which is sure to attract designers from the Santa Barbara area and beyond.

Los Angeles/ Palm Springs Inland F irst, I wish to thank all who supported my candidacy and my efforts these past months as President-Elect. I promise to work hard over the next two years pursuing the goals and mission of our chapter and fulfill the responsibilities with which you have entrusted me. To that end, in concert with our talented board, I plan to cultivate programs and events to entertain and inform, highlight our chapter’s achievements (such as our pro-bono projects), and promote the ASID brand to the broader community.

To achieve our goals, it is paramount that our talented membership of designers, industry partners, educators, and students participate. I hope you will contribute your unique talents to whichever endeavors spark your interest and passion. Involvement and engagement within the chapter fosters relationships among our members, connecting newer members and emerging professionals to those more seasoned, who offer the kind of expertise and guidance that comes from working in the design trenches for decades. The synergies of these connections can energize and refuel us all.

O ne of the most exciting developments in the past few months has been the merger of the Los Angeles and Palm Springs Chapters. The challenge of merging so many members from Santa Barbara to the O range County line and from Santa Monica to the Desert Cities may be great, but is nevertheless eclipsed by the excitement of the potential to unite, grow and support each other.

W E C E L E B R AT E A L L DISCIPLINES OF DESIGN HOW WE D I N E Historical “Inspiration and Motivation” WO R K is the concept of this issue.

Two events promoted by ASIDLA, Maison Objet in Paris LEARN and Modernism Week in Palm Springs occurred within weeks of one another, and while they are so very different events, the L I V E inspiration provided by both is priceless. I was fortunate to attend each and found myself enthralled in the textures, colors, G R OW patterns and personal interactions created continents and centuries apart.

TEACH Always in search of ways to set our individual projects apart, make them better; more cohesive and more distinctive, HOST we designers often look to the past for inspiration, just as we may also turn to our colleagues for personal and professional motivation. These trips provided all of this and much more.

P R AY For anyone who has not had the opportunity to attend either of these events, please put them on your calendar for next year and LEAD try to attend at least one. I promise, it will be worth your time.

In keeping with this issue’s historical concept, please HEAL review and enjoy the projects that were shared in this issue by our fellow ASID members. Whether your work is focused in P L AY contract or residential design you will appreciate the quality and clarity of thought that is depicted in each space, as well as the CURE appreciation of historical design evidenced in the projects.

MODERNISM WEEK-PALM SPRINGS 2017

M

odernism Week celebrates and fosters appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation and sustainable modern living as represented in Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley.

Highlighting this dedication to education, this year more than thirty lectures and films spotlighting famed architects, landscape designers, historians, design experts and authors were presented to attendees. Additional Modernism Week educational programs included several West Coast film premiers, and panels about architectural preservation and renovation.

Modernism Week’s central headquarters, CAMP (‘Community and Meeting Place’) was staged in a dynamic tented structure located in Downtown Palm Springs. Ferguson, Modernism Week’s exclusive Kitchen, Bath and Lighting sponsor, presented entertaining culinary demonstrations in their state-of-the-art kitchen, and featured Thermador appliances and innovative faucets from DXV. The expansive CAMP space also featured an information kiosk, and a large theater that featured more than 40 stimulating programs, panels and demonstrations.

It was also the ticket hub for the daily Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, and new for 2017, group rides on the all-new Sunny Cycle electric bike experience with special tours developed specifically for Modernism Week exploring architectural neighborhoods in downtown.

Modernism Week once again offered attendees the opportunity to participate in home tours and architectural excursions outside of the immediate Palm Springs area including Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and Indian Wells, as well as the high desert.

OUR MODERNISM EVENTS in Palm

Springs over President’s Day weekend provided a great backdrop for interaction between Los Angeles and Palm Springs designers who have joined together to create an even stronger more diversified Los Angeles chapter. The fourth annual “field trip” to the desert, which annually brings dozens of L.A. members to enjoy the house tours and parties, offered our desert designers an opportunity to introduce themselves and their resources, and display their welcoming spirit to their more coastal colleagues.

Our formidable Modernism Weekend Committee, spearheaded by Cheryl Urrutia (Allied ASID), Laura Janes, (Industry Partner and artist extraordinaire), and Janis Christian Synder (ASID and former President of the Palm Springs Chapter), worked hard creating a great package of tours and weathered (pun intended) unexpected logistical nightmares due to the unexpected rain storms, culminating in a wonderful getacquainted luncheon at Lulu’s.

Additionally, for the first time, our chapter sponsored a booth at the Modernism Show at The Palm Springs Convention Center.

This afforded an opportunity to introduce 18

our ASID brand and professionalism to the public at large. The ASID booth was staffed by local designers who functioned as “brand ambassadors” introducing visitors to our talents and ethics with free 30-minute design consultations. ASID UCLA Students members, Flavia Ferraz (our Student Board Representative) and Veronica Covert, created terrific storyboards representing “The Masters of Interior Design,” which served as a focal point in the booth. Kudos to them both for a great job executed with very little time and resources.

and former President) and Gary Petrisak hosted a wonderful Saturday night cocktail party at their home. The weekend was capped with my annual Sunday brunch at home with my spouse, Neil Tadken.

The momentum created by the Modernism events will be built upon by Cheryl’s committee, who have several forthcoming announcements about exciting opportunities during the coming year. This powerhouse team has a plethora of events percolating that should garner press and the public’s attention. Please be sure to join us for the fun and fellowship! n

Pierre Frey Archive’s Curator Sophie Rouart

F

ull-time curator Sophie Rouart, located in the Pierre Frey’s Paris facility tells the story of inspiration in the Pierre Frey fabric line to designers attending Maison Objet. Ms. Rouart provided an incomparable tour of the archives, explaining the importance of the link provided to the past by the carefully maintained collection.

Since 1969, when Patrick Frey joined the Frey Company, he has maintained his father’s tradition of collecting document fabrics to be used as inspiration for new designs. Now, because of his diligence in procuring and maintaining fabrics and papers dating as far back as the 16th century, their collection houses over 30,000 documents.

These documents have inspired many designs in the current collection and will certainly inspire many more.

Shangsha, a pattern in the last collection, was displayed along side, an archival fabric that was an embroidered Chinese baby carrier from the 20th century.

It was interesting to see how the archival piece was interpreted to create the new design. Rouart explained that while sometimes Frey reproduced the archival fabrics meticulously, other times they used the documents only as a source of inspiration. n

Considering Color Through the Decades COLOR HAS LONG BEEN ONE of the most important aspects of

design. With a few quick brush strokes spaces can be completely transformed, conveying a new set of emotions and highlighting different design aspects. Additionally, color allows designers to explore different time periods, as the colors themselves are often reflective of the mood, ideals and events of the time period.

“When you look at historical color trends, you really start to see that colors are deeply intertwined with the mood of the time,” says Sue Wadden, Director of Color Marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “By tapping into this, designers and others can evoke the styles of times gone by or restore the original look and feel to a piece or space.”

Some notable color trends that helped define an era: • In the 1960s, with the British Invasion in full swing, indemand colors were bright, modern and psychedelic with paisley patterns, mod graphics and clashing color.

• The “earth movement” picked up steam in the 1970s, beige, rust, avocado and other earthy hues became popular.

• The “mauving of America” was in full swing in the 1980s with coordinates in baby blue and gray. The Miami Vice effect also began in the mid 80s with pastels beginning to dominate.

• In the 90s, McMansions and Tuscan style influences began on the West Coast and made their way to the Southwest, South and Midwest. While beige dominated, rustic golds, terra cotta, putty, sage and earthy reds were plentiful.

• Tuscan carried over into the early 2000s. Latte became one of Sherwin-Williams most popular colors, and dark wood tones and deep coffee accents paired with blue made a brief but noticeable impact.

• The 2010s are marked when the graying of America began in full force. Stainless steel appliances became the norm and gray was opted for walls rather than beige.

Transformation of a Historic Home

ur team at Designs of the Interior had the honor of renovating the Grand Salon in a 1918 Mission Revival mansion, as part of the 2016 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. We wanted to respect the historical elements of the home, but transform the cavernous, ill-lit, uninviting space into one of comfort and style demanded by today’s design client.

To preserve the architectural elements of craftsmanship and materials, irreplaceable rare walnut wainscoting was updated by subtly changing its mottled, reddish finish to warm, cocoa tones. The original perimeter ceiling molding was widened to a more impactful width, to encompass new recessed lighting for a more inviting, cheerful mood. The crowning touch was our bronze and hand blown glass chandelier from Portugal. n

Shimmery window treatments with crystals on the pleats, on acrylic hardware, brightened the room and softened the copious wainscoting. Our custom furnishings created separate vignettes, to accommodate any size gathering with inviting comfort. We designed a vast, 12’ sofa with a partially lowered back, to avoid blocking the window, with two iron cocktail tables with floating glass tops. Tete-a-tete chairs with a tufted ottoman made conversation in front of the fireplace a pleasure. Our partners’ writing desk with sleek nickel details, flanked with custom upholstered chairs and bold, contemporary art created a chic work space. Lastly, a sofa with wooden base, with a midcentury modern walnut coffee table and antique side tables, made an impactful statement. A massive, custom-cut wool rug grounded the space and dramatically softened sound. n

Wattles Mansion Showcase House Kitchen

Newfound appreciation of vintage design has infused the industry with innovative product. There has never been a better time to renovate historic properties, as well as those properties that just want that vintage look. Technology advances have crossed over into the design field so that the level of choice has grown to record levels. A case in point is the recently renovated kitchen suite for the City of Los Angeles Wattles Mansion Showcase House in Hollywood built in1926.

Since the Wattles is a city historic resource, great care was taken in redoing the kitchen (which the city uses for rentals), while respecting its historical integrity. Period tile was restored when possible. A new leadfree vintage inspired 36

faucet was installed. Historically inspired new wallpaper was installed using a new technology – strippable paper that can be removed without damaging the plaster walls. New window shades reminiscent of old fashioned window coverings bring fresh life to the space. Even the vintage style wood rod utilizes new bright pink coloring and technology use vintage detailed finials. A vintage look LaCornue range is now a part of the kitchen, as if it was there all along.

In the case of the Wattles Mansion Kitchen Suite, the renovation goal was to breathe new life to the space while respecting its 1926 era. It is now a combination of energy efficiency, sustainability and style, 90 years later. Truly the bee’s knees! n

The Welwood Murray Memorial Library

he original Palm Springs Library started off as just a modest collection of books gathered in an adobe structure at the rear of the Palm Springs Hotel. But as the colony grew, so did the need for a more formal library and building.

By the mid 1930s, there was talk in the village about a permanent solution. That solution was made possible in 1938 by a bequest of land to the city by the son of Dr. Welwood Murray, one of Palm Springs first permanent Anglo residents.

The design and construction of the library building and courtyard at the intersection of Tahquitz Canyon and Palm Canyon was made possible by donations from the local community, the Murray family and a single $10,000 gift from local philanthropist Thomas O’Donnell. The library would now have a permanent place with the opening of 38

the Welwood Murray Memorial Library in February, 1941.

In no time, it became the centerpiece of downtown and was a popular place for the next three decades. But with a new, much larger library built, one more centrally located, the Welwood was no longer of much use. By 1992, the library board could no longer afford the $200,000 yearly upkeep and closed the building.

The volunteers stepped in, and the city allowed them to run it as a private library. The library closed for good in 2009 and turned the keys back over to the city. Yet many in the city wanted to repurpose the structure and make it a feature of the new development coming into downtown.

Fast forward to today with a new chapter in the library history being written. The complete restoration of the building, including all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing

systems in place was made possible by a $1.3 million budget thru donations and a local special tax.

The biggest challenge was working with six committees and the city council to approve the interior design we were creating for the space. Being a Class One historic property meant keeping as much of the original interior architecture as possible while making it functional for its new purpose… a micro branch of the PS library system, the offices and archive for the Palm Springs Historical Society — all managed under the watchful eye of the Palm Springs Tourism Bureau.

The Welwood was reopened on February 17, 2015, on time and on budget and has seen hundreds of locals and tourists walk thru the double doors. The jewel box of downtown is a place to check emails, read up on the latest news and get information about local events of interest to tourists. n

History Shows, Time in the Market Beats Market Timing

ports commentators often predict the big winners at the start of a season, only to see their forecasts fade away as their chosen teams lose. Similarly, market timers often try to predict big wins in the investment markets, only to be disappointed by the reality of unexpected turns in performance.

While it is true that market timing sometimes can be beneficial for seasoned investing experts, for those who do not wish to subject their money to such a potentially risky strategy, time--not timing--could be the best alternative.

Market Timing Defined Market timing is a strategy in which the investor tries to identify the best times to be in the market and when to get out. Relying heavily on forecasts

and market analysis, market timing is often utilized by investment professionals to attempt to reap the greatest rewards for their clients.

Proponents of market timing say that successfully forecasting the ebbs and flows of the market can result in higher returns than other strategies. Their specific tactics for pursuing success can range from what some have termed “pure timers” to “dynamic asset allocators.”

Risky Business?

Although professionals may be able to use market timing strategies to reap rewards, one of the biggest risks of this strategy is potentially missing the market’s best-performing cycles. For example, say an investor believes that the stock market is going to drop and removes investment

dollars from some or all of the stocks in his or her portfolio and replaces them with more conservative investments.1 While the money is out of stocks, the market instead enjoys its best-performing month(s). In this instance, the investor has incorrectly timed the market and missed those top months.

Though past performance cannot guarantee future results, missing the top 20 months in the 30-year period ended December 31, 2014, would have cost you $20,546 in potential earnings on a $1,000 investment in Standard & Poor’s Composite Index of 500 Stocks (S&P 500). Similarly, missing the top 10 performing months in the 30-year period would have cost a hypothetical investor $15,459 in potential earnings. Left untouched, the initial $1,000 investment would have grown to $25,109 over the same period.2 An Alternative Choice: Buy and Hold If you’re not a professional money manager, you may want to consider a buy and hold strategy, or to purchase shares and hold on to them throughout various market cycles. Through a

“buy-and-hold” strategy you take advantage of the potential for compounding, or the ability of your invested money to make money. Keep in mind, however, that buy and hold does not mean you can ignore your investments. Remember to give your portfolio regular checkups, as your investment needs will change over time.

Normally a young investor will probably begin investing for longer-term goals such as marriage, buying a house and even retirement.

At this stage, the majority of his portfolio will likely be in stocks, as history shows stocks have offered the best potential for growth over time, even though they have also experienced the widest short-term fluctuations.3 As the investor ages and gets closer to each goal, he or she will want to rebalance portfolio assets as financial needs warrant.

Time Is Your Ally Clearly, time can be a better ally than timing.

The best approach to your portfolio is to arm yourself with all the necessary information, and then take your questions to a financial advisor to help with the final decision making. Above all, remember that both your long- and shortterm investment decisions should be based on your financial needs and your ability to accept the risks that go along with each investment.
