T

o follow the theme of “Curated Design”, I must remind all of you of the amazing Bullocks Wilshire building nestled in Los Angeles, which is on the National Register of Historic Places in Los Angeles. The building now houses the Southwestern Law School, and they have embraced it with love and respect, carefully bringing it back to it’s original intended grandeur. Constructed in 1929, during the golden era of film making and splendor in L.A., BW was patronized by Clark Gable and all of the stars of the era, many of whom even worked as sales people in the store before they were given their first “big break.” But that is not what makes it such a treat, it’s the interior, which has been meticulously restored and is a truly curated space. The integral lighting is so in keeping with what is being done today it’s laughable. The structural surfaces, elevator doors, flooring, murals, lighting and furnishings have all been restored, returned or in some cases excavated from the dreaded drop ceilings and paneling which covered much of the beauty for far too long. Now pristine and in museum quality shape, the building is worthy of true admiration. I am so excited that I have the opportunity to arrange an ASID tour with the Dean of the Law School and I can’t wait to share the space with all of you. Even if you used to shop there, this time you will ogle, oohh and aahh because together we won’t overlook a thing! Watch for the invitation, you won’t want to miss this event! As always, let me know if you have places, products or gossip you would like to share! n

See you soon!, Cindi!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Los Angeles Greetings members, colleagues, students, emerging professionals, and friends, I hope this issue finds you all well, you’re enjoying a wonderful summer, and your businesses are growing, evolving, and thriving! I can hardly believe that our year is soon coming to a close. The time has flown by so quickly. It has been a tremendous journey for me as your President, President-Elect, and Professional Development Director, and I am truly honored and grateful to have had the privilege to serve you. We have seen a very successful year with many positive changes and new ideas in development, and with long range objectives and two-year goals in mind, there has been much growth. We continue to reach out to leading associations, publications, and organizations to establish and encourage positive relationships, growth, develop collaborative events, and encourage communication and conversations that will impact our design industry and community as a whole. Our student membership continues to lead the way for student chapters across the country and our emerging professional leadership has been second to none. Our increasing chapter membership provides us with so much beauty and hope for the future. This year we also applaud the outstanding achievements of two extraordinary and beloved chapter members. Former Chapter Presidents, Fernando Diaz and Deborah Davis, join the esteemed ranks of Fellows this year and we celebrate and honor their continued service and dedication to the Chapter, the Society, and to the Interior Design Profession as a whole. Bravo dear friends! It has been quite a passionate year with this spectacular Board of Directors. I can truly say that I have never worked with a board more invested and thoughtful. I complete my term a better person having served with you. I also must celebrate the efforts of our brilliant and tireless LA Design Magazine team. D riven by the persistent leadership of our Editor-in-Chief and Former Chapter President, Cindi Burnett, our little newsletter has become a full blown magazine. Yet, it takes a village. So, BRAVO to Brad Haan, Will Myers, and Darra Bishop for your vision and commitment; and to the many contributing writers, photographers, designers and industry partners, we say a very heartfelt THANK YOU… and “keep it coming”!

8

There is so much more to say, and so many more people to acknowledge and thank. I hope you will all join us at the Annual Meeting on the evening of September 14th to engage with your current board and hear our State of the Chapter update, meet our new Board of Directors, and take a peek inside their vision for the future. Miriam Webster defines ART as: Something that is created with imagination and skill, and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings. The conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; works so produced, and a skillful plan. In this gorgeous issue, and the last of our focus series for the chapter year, we lift up and recognize ART, and the fabulous creatives that curate, create, collaborate, install, collect, and inspire us. No truer definition applies then to all our chapter members, partners and leaders. Such a perfect way to commemorate a glorious year! I thank you again my friends for this opportunity and honor, and look forward to continuing to actively support our wonderful incoming President in her mission, and as always, our amazing Chapter. n Cheers and blessings!

rchitects in Los Angeles have to find increasingly creative ways to maximize urban resources. For this commercial office, the team carved a flexible creative office out of a 1980’s office building that was formerly a pharmaceutical lab. By balancing the industrial structure of the building with inserted interventions we not only provided the efficient and programmatically required workstations, offices and support spaces but also the flexibility that allows the space to be subdivided as needed. By combining flexibility and creative programming we developed a new innovative office typology that can adapt with the tenant. Most importantly the design provides flexibility that allows the space to be subdivided while each tenant retains an abundance of natural light, amenities, work zones, and useable outdoor space. In order to balance the white walls and metal highlights, the wood structure was exposed and new wood furniture and fixtures were integrated into each workstation and bistro (collaborating space). The focal point is a floating main conference room with highly reflective stainless steel on two surfaces that creates an abstract form and anchors the double height space. Its unique shape hovers over a collaboration zone, forming an additional freeform co-working space. Large windows and numerous skylights were strategically located to draw natural light deep into the formerly dark interior. In addition, we created two outdoor zones by creatively carving into or adding to the building. n www.hansonla.com

n a world of ever changing fades and trends, a good designer, one with a vision for that “Sense of Place” must be able to execute a project with the clients’ objectives in mind, while holding true to their own design-style and disciplines.

CREATIVE DESIGN. What does this mean?

HOW DOES ONE DO THIS? I do this by setting a stage if you will, or allowing myself to see my project in the context of one large canvas. In essence, I become an artist during my conceptual phase. My visionary phase. My “what do I want to bring to this?” phase. The first step for me is to ask myself: “Where am I?” asking in an artistic sense. “What is the place that I am in? How do I want this place to make me feel?” These are critical questions one must ask themselves to really create something unique, original; transforming interior design into a work of art. When I ask myself these questions, I begin on the path of CONTEXT. By asking myself these questions, I begin a journey of creativity that leads me on paths I’ve never been on before. That’s how each job can turn out COMPLETELY UNIQUE. Context is scope. Context is relevance. Discovering the Context is key to fulfilling a VALID ARTISIC VISION.

Consider these wine cellar projects and feel the difference in the CONTEXT of each project. Each one of these projects began with a question: “Where am I?” Being an Interior Designer can be very easy and very difficult all at the same time. With any of your projects, when “anything is possible”, it leaves too much to choose from. By setting your mind in the state of CONTEXT you can begin to narrow those possibilities and actually get something done that everybody loves. n Paul LaRussa, Premier Cru, Inc. www.pcwinecellars.com

Furnishing Solutions I By Leslie Shapiro Joyal

n 1998, I created a company called 407 Furniture, which meshes my abilities as an interior designer with furniture manufacturing. My expertise in interior design allows me to treat each piece of furniture as I would a personalized design project. I listen to the client, create a road map of what’s needed, and design accordingly, offering custom capabilities in terms of size, material, construction and budget. When I started the company, this service ran counter to conventional thinking. However, I am now in my 19th year of business and going strong. My desire for purely good design is illustrated in my sound principles as a designer. I use local resources that I personally oversee, and in the process, employ artisans with fair wages and conditions. I celebrate and advocate minimalism, mindfulness within manufac- turing and reduction of excess materials and waste. Since I oversee each part of the process, I am able to personally guarantee that the best product gets to my clients. I am afforded the ability to make pieces that are built precisely to the dimensions and characteristics desired. My species palette incorporates American hardwoods from forests that are renewable. Additionally, I do not use exotic woods from forests that are threatened. Whether creating furniture or interiors, I love promoting the concept of custom design, sustainability and use of quality materials to architects, designers and clients. It is my commitment to the industry and profession that I love. n www.shapirojoyalstudio.com

Having the Right Pull By Anne Pierce

All of Martin Pierce’s door handles are custom made and finished to order. This is particularly important when working with existing doors and cabinets, as was the case on this project, where the holes left by the old hardware curtail the size and often the shape and function of a new handle set or cabinet pull. Combined with the creative imagination of designer Bonnie J. McIntire ASID, the result is a unique home renovation that seamlessly blends the old, but still workable, with the new. At Martin Pierce’s Los Angeles showroom Bonnie was able to see the complete and diverse range of hardware styles that Martin makes to order and was able to review the suitability of each style with her client. The project fittingly began at the front door with the installation of the woodpecker door knocker. Bonnie wanted to continue the bark texture of the woodpecker plate into the front door escutcheon but needed a door knob that was easy to grasp and pleasing to the touch. So, with Martin’s input, a custom and one of a kind “willow bark” door set was conceived. For the inside of the front door Martin also made a custom oval escutcheon, small enough to work in the narrow confines determined by the original 1930’s lock. The pantry was the transition point between the original dining room and the completely refurbished kitchen. A custom bunny door set was created with the dining room bunny knob finished in an antique bronze patina and with the pantry bunny knob nickel plated and finished to match the kitchen cabinet pulls. n

rto Brick, Southern California-based creators of hand-crafted tiles, brick veneer and pavers for residential, commercial and public applications, announces a unique collaboration with acclaimed local visual artist David Shipley. Since 1966, Arto Brick’s in-house artisans have been handcrafting small batches of product made from locally sourced clay and concrete. Unlike mass-produced, machine-made products, every Arto brick veneer, tile, and paver offers its own unique texture, color, variation and human warmth. Arto’s ongoing collaboration with critically acclaimed painter and sculptor Shipley reflects the company’s passion for creating products that are as beautiful and as individual as they are functional. “I was first introduced to David Shipley’s work 18 years ago, when he used our concrete tiles in murals he was creating for LA homes,” recalls Armen Alajian who, along with his brother, Vod Alajian, is the second-generation owner of this family-run operation. “We’ve been talking about collaborating on a project ever since we first saw David’s amazing work. When we were establishing our ceramic division, we realized we now had the perfect canvas for David’s dynamic and arresting painting style.” As a result of this collaboration, Arto Brick has introduced an innovative new collection of ceramic tiles featuring Shipley’s distinctive abstract paintings. “It’s not uncommon for producers in our industry to collaborate with designers,” explains Alajian. “But we are one of the only ones to collaborate with a renowned

24

established painter like David. Now our customers will be able to bring David’s art into their homes. We’re incredibly excited about that.” “Visual artists seldom collaborate on projects,” adds Shipley. “Our time is more often spent in a studio, waiting for commissions from collectors or for exhibitions of our work to go on display. That’s why I’m excited about my work being seen in people’s homes, on their floors, their walls, their patios, and not just on gallery walls. It has been a tremendous experience.” Shipley is now working with Arto Brick to create an exclusive collection of textured tiles, ceramic paintings, tableware and a range of household items featuring the artist’s recognizable interplay of vibrant color, movement and emotion. “I started experimenting at the Arto factory with glazes on tiles and acrylic paint on concrete tiles,” says Shipley. “As I experimented, the images and colors soon took on a life of their own. The firing process changes the piece completely. There is always an element of surprise in this medium.” “We have always been enthusiastic about crafting products that enhance people’s living spaces, that create atmosphere, bring warmth to the home and have a life of their own,” concludes Alajian. “Our David Shipley Collection is an extension of this creative effort, and we’re confident our customers will love having these artistic pieces as part of their family. I look forward to seeing our collaboration with David evolve even as we create www.artobrick.com and offer other products.” n LADESIGN | ISSUE 3 | 2O16

elcome to the world of Lightsculptures, where artist Timothy J. Ferrie combines the functionality of light with the intrinsic qualities of art. Copper tubing comes to life in each hand-made piece, customized to each client’s exact specifications. With a line that includes chandeliers, table lights, floor lights and sconces, the possibilities are endless. “Lots of companies offer custom lighting, but nobody customizes like Tim!” says Lori Mancuso, Director of Sales and Marketing, “If you like a particular sconce but need a pendant, it can be made. Floor lights can become table lights, and visa versa. Tim is happy to work with designers to bring their vision to life, but is equally comfortable taking the room into his own hands and creating something absolutely perfect.” “When you have a Lightsculpture in your room, you have a completely unique, one-of-a-kind work of art and that is important to me,” says Ferrie. “I strive to give each piece a personality of its own. Simple things like the finish, the number of bulbs and even the type of bulb will create different moods.” To that end a wide variety of chemical finishes are available to choose from and any paint can be color matched. Most pieces can be made within 7-10 days and we ship worldwide. Our chandeliers are not only beautiful, but also built to the highest standard of safety and are UL Listed for dry and moist environments. n You can see the complete line at www.tjferrie.com LADESIGN | ISSUE 3 | 2O16

he custom wine room we designed for a client who has an ever growing collection is still one of my favorite collaborations with a fabricator. We used figured walnut and layers of blackened steel grids to create an intricate and contemporary effect. The way LED lighting is integrated creates amazing shadow play off the bottles. Thermidor wine coolers are also seamlessly integrated on both sides of the room. The beauty in working hand in hand with custom fabricators is being able to create truly tailored spaces that meet the conceptual desires and functional needs of your clients. It is the ultimate success of form meeting function. Working with eb design for the past 13 years, we have been able to push the envelope of finishes and designs by testing various materials including foam and plastered ceiling treatments for light weight applications, large woven woods, organically shaped metals, hand antiqued and patina mirrors and metals. We have been able to create 3 dimensional patterns out of both metal and wood in both contemporary and historic looking spaces. Some collaborations include: Bar Chloe in Santa Monica, 1321 Downtown Taproom, 25 Degrees in Scottsdale, AZ, C4 Deli and numerous private estates throughout Southern California. eb design boasts over 20 years of custom fabrication experience with build outs at some of the top hot spots in Los Angeles including: SLS hotel, Fig and Olive, Dream Hotel, TAO Hollywood, Sushi Roku, Mama Shelter Hotel. The goal with every custom space is to trigger emotion and warm memories. We are able to achieve the effect by thinking about every surface of a space, whether it’s a restaurant or someone’s home. We think about how people will use the space, what they will look at first, how it will be lit, what people will touch when they sit down. Then we begin to talk about how all of the surfaces work together and what understated details we can add to elevate the experience. n www.ebdesign.cc

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Small Wonder BEFORE 30

By Eileen Gould, Allied ASID, Interior Design and Construction, Inc.

This very small kitchen in Venice was a delightful challenge. A successful young couple with 3 small children was limited by the footprint. OUR GOAL: TO OPEN UP THE SPACE, to create more storage and to personalize while creating a beautiful kitchen. I am a General Contractor and an Interior Designer which fosters closeness with my clients from conception to completion of any project. I truly love that connection. Having 3 children under 10 and as working parents meant the kitchen needed to be efficient in function, yet fun. I used chalkboard paint in one area for both kids and adults. I embedded the clock into the chalkboard wall to create function and interest. The countertops are quartz because of the ease of care and the colors are very neutral. This allows the homeowner to accessorize with color and change as they desire without spending a lot of money. Embedding the refrigerator in the same cabinetry face along with hiding the microwave and other appliances added to the clean spacious feeling. The clients were so pleased and their tiny house now can be lived in and enjoyed for many years to come. I pride myself on making every client feel special. n lifestylesdesign.com

Hang It Up! The Art of Organization

By Michele LaFlesch Closet Factory has been the custom storage solution authority for over 30 years, growing into a national franchise network. We transform existing spaces to make wardrobes, collections and storage more visually organized and easily accessible, allowing clients to optimize every square inch of their home. Each project begins with the organizational layout of the space. Our experienced designers ask questions to collaborate with, and truly understand, every client on a deeper level. ‘Are you right or left-handed? Do you fold or hang your pants? Are you a visual organizer, or do you prefer to keep things behind doors and in drawers?’ Since no two people or routines are ever identical, no two storage solutions should be, either. You pick the organizational elements, the materials, the style, and what you want to be able to store and spend. Our goal is to bring that vision to life. Nowadays, a growing number of homeowners are treating closets like their own room, complete with lighting, flooring, even furniture such as chaise lounges and poufs. LADESIGN | ISSUE 3 | 2O16

Closet Factory, continued... Closet islands featuring built-in seating are becoming a ‘must have’ design element, as are glass cut outs in the island countertop, so clients can see all of the beautiful pieces of their jewelry collection. Glass shelves are ideal handbags, hats, and perfumes, while LED lights, both strip and spot, allow clients to create unique displays for all of their collections. Innovative Italian-style floated accents, including shelves, drawers, and base cabinets, have transitioned closet design away from the ‘boxy’ feel of years’ past, allowing people to curate their wardrobes like their very own boutique shop. We practice the art of organization at Closet Factory, and believe that your client’s home should be an extension of them. n www.closetfactory.com

ortress, Inc. has long been regarded as the go-to seating company when you wanted something unique. Whether it is the seating design or unusual room dimensions, Fortress’ innovative ability usually solves the issues. So, when there was a need to transform a living room into a theater and then back again, New land Solutions, Ltd. of Portsmouth, England, called Fortress to produce a completely custom sofa that could ride on a motorized track. Due to space constraints, the room couldn’t accommodate all the seats needed when it was time to view the movie. Therefore, not only did the large sofa’s dimensions need to be exact, but the weight also had to be controlled to allow the entire sofa to move forward while, at the back of the room, from underground, an entire row of hidden

theater seats rose into position. The sofa was also intended to hold much of the electronic gear and control mechanisms for the entire configuration to transform. At first appearing to be a typical living room, one doesn’t expect the hidden surprises this room holds. Pulse Marketing, New Land Solutions and Future Automation all worked together to create this ingenious technology transforming the room from its original seating arrangement to include more seats. Watch the amazing transformation here: www.fortresseating.com/ newland-video. Conceptualized in England. Produced in Los Angeles. Client satisfied. MAKE YOUR MARK: THE CREATIVE’S GUIDE TO BUILDING A BUSINESS WITH IMPACT

SITUATIONS MATTER: UNDERSTANDING HOW CONTEXT TRANSFORMS YOUR WORLD

Finally, a business book for makers, not managers. Are you ready to “make a dent in the universe”? As a creative, you no longer have to take a backseat. In fact, stepping up and embracing entrepreneurship is the fastest route to impact. But where do you start? And what sets the businesses that succeed apart? To find out, we asked the bright minds behind companies like Google X, Warby Parker, Facebook, O’Reilly Media, and more to share their startup wisdom. Featuring hard-won wisdom from twenty leading entrepreneurs and designers, 99U’s Make Your Mark will arm you with practical insights for launching a purpose-driven business, refining your product, delighting your customers, inspiring your team—and ultimately—making something that matters.

A “thought-provoking and entertaining” The Washington Post exploration of the invisible forces that influence your life— and how understanding them improves everything you do. The world around you is pulling your strings, shaping your private thoughts and innermost instincts. And you don’t even realize it. Every day we overlook the enormous power of situations in our lives. We fail to appreciate that life’s basic details—where we are, whom we’re with, and even whether we’re in a hurry—affect how we think and act. Sommers argues that understanding the powerful influence of context forces us to rethink how we see ourselves and makes us more effective at work, at home, and in our daily lives. He describes the pitfalls that we should avoid and offers compelling suggestions on how we can make better decisions and smarter observations about the world around us. Insightful, engaging, and readable, Situations Matter is a primer on the importance of context in our lives and on what really makes people tick.

This addition of upscale wood furniture provides a natural complement to Trendway’s offerings. “We are thrilled to be the exclusive partner of Magnus Olesen products in North America,” said Pete Phillips, director of product commercialization at Trendway. “The phased launch of Magnus Olesen wood and 21 upholstered furniture designs represents the next chapter in our product strategy.”

The i-SIT Chair by Lone Storgaard and Design Concern: This innovative chair provides distinctive seating comfort, adaptable to all users. The design was founded on extensive research into the needs of a large variety of users, along with advice from ergonomists and back specialists. With artistic sensibility, Storgaard translated this knowledge into seating that is as comfortable and responsive as it is striking. This creation has been honored with international design recognition from Red Dot, FX and IF.

The Butterfly Chair designed by Niels Gammelgaard: A brilliant flight of imagination, Butterfly exemplifies Nordic design traditions of pure materials, simple form and artistic craftsmanship. Elegant, featherlight and distinctive, it offers practical seating comfort and durable craftsmanship.

The Mix Table by Thygesen and Sorensen: Since mid-century, Thygesen and Sorensen have collaborated to create museumquality designs in laminated and molded wood. The Mix Table series exemplifies their emphasis on simple, ingenious and functional concepts that meet high aesthetic and quality standards.

8000 Series designed by Rud Thygesen and Johnny Sorensen: The 8000 Series embodies core Danish design principles of simplicity, flawless craftsmanship and function. This patented process is unique to the 8000 Series, which includes the 8002 Chair and 8000 Stool.

Inferno Chair by Pelikan Design (Gammelgaard and Lars Mathiesen): An elegant design with seating comfort from the intrinsic flexible tilt, the fully-upholstered 5-star base chair is available in low- and highback versions, with and without arms.

Flow Public Seating designed by Busk + Hertzog: The design characteristics of this seating are sculptural with clean lines and a simple expression with minimal embellishment. This sensibility is evident in Flow, a modular soft seating system for reception areas and public spaces. It uses four basic elements that can be used as a chair, sofa or lounge system in circular, serpentine and row configurations. The Sputnik Table by Busk + Hertzog: This table is a series of three low tables crafted with a minimalist, sculptural look in a variety of different heights, top sizes and surface material options. They can be combined in limitless decorative configurations or used as single tables. “As we have been previewing the line with select clients and A+D the past several weeks, I am very excited and pleased with the reaction we have received, especially from designers that have been looking for something fresh to specify for work and home applications,” said Phillips. n www.trendway.com LADESIGN | ISSUE 3 | 2O16

HOME THEATERS

Stars, out under the stars...

W

ith the welcoming weather found year around in Los Angeles, Angelinos are always searching for a reason to venture out of their homes. One of the more exciting pastimes to arise over the last few years are the hugely popular outdoor film screenings that take place throughout the city. These events are the inspiration for Haas Entertainment’s Starlight Theaters. System designer Ian Robert Yost and company owner Jeff Haas set out to capture the feeling and electricity of outdoor cinema and bring it to the home. The result of their efforts is a unique and engaging twist on this concept. Tucked away in the Hollywood Hills, stands one of their most recent projects. There you will find a home comforting its guests with the inviting ambience of an eclectic décor, ranging from 17th century handcrafted Italian furnishings to modern artwork. The home opens to a rich green environment where imported olive trees and a mixture or foreign and native plant life craft an almost Mediterranean look and feeling. A few steps further, a rustic stone and wood patio rests before giving way to a glistening pool and pulling your gaze to the pool house. This structure, more of a free standing entertainment space, with a second companion kitchen, bath and gym mimic the stylings and architectural queues of the main house. The space features your familiar home theater featuring a wall hung 75” Sony flat panel television and 6.1 architectural in wall speaker system manufactured by Martin Logan. This experience alone would 42

be an absolute treat for your average movie goer, but the home owner and team at Haas Entertainment wanted to create something truly special. This is where the heart of this entertainment system can be found. The team at Haas accomplished the creation of the indoor and outdoor theater through a double-sided projection screen that could be viewed from both the pool, patio, and within the pool house as well. The screen was fashioned by creatively employing the rear projection fabric to provide the highest resolution on each side of the screen. A Sony 4K Cinematic Projector was installed within the pool house to provide theater quality even when viewing from outside. To remain true to the classic setting and not disturbing the aesthetics of the yard, eighteen Sonance Landscape Speakers were implemented throughout the back yard with a Malibu lighting design to adapt naturally to the atmosphere and provide the highest quality sound from the satellite speakers. In addition to the concealed styling, two booming in-ground subwoofers were installed that bring warmth to the yard and yet completely remain out of sight. To match the superior sound of the terrace, a 6.1 surround sound system from the Martin Logan Architectural Series was installed to create a seamless look in-wall and provide quality sound that’s perfect for both film and music. To integrate all the equipment into one location, a Crestron Automated Control System was set so one could choose music, film, or gaming simply by choosing so on the remote touch screen. n www.haasentertainment.com LADESIGN | ISSUE 3 | 2O16

Tips for Surviving a Stock Market Correction

F

or investors accustomed to strong and consistent stock market gains, a period of sustained falling stock prices is not easy to accept. All too often, investors will react to a drop in prices by panic selling or digging their heels in despite deteriorating fundamentals. But more thoughtful investors will see a correction or downturn as an opportunity to review their portfolios and make adjustments where necessary. Definitions, Please A stock market correction is defined as a time when major market indexes drop between 10% and 20%. Declines greater than 20% are considered to be bear markets. If confronted with a significant market decline, how might your portfolio be affected? Here’s a short list of some potential risks you may face as an investor in stocks, and some ideas about how to potentially reduce the chance of your portfolio suffering a big loss.1

Market risk, common to all types of investments, is the possibility that an investor will experience losses due to factors that affect the overall performance of the financial markets. You can potentially manage the impact of market risk on the stocks you hold by allocating part of your portfolio to other types of assets, such as bonds.2 In this way, when stock prices decline, it’s possible that a rise in your bond investments will help cushion the fall. Lack of diversification.3 If you only own a couple of stocks, you are extremely vulnerable if one suffers a major decline. For this reason, experts recommend that stock investors hold more than a handful of stocks. That way, if one stock falls sharply, the drop may have a more limited influence on your overall portfolio. Also, it’s important to diversify your stock portfolio among various industry sectors. For instance, owning just computer-related stocks will do you little good if the prospects dim for the computer industry. Keep in mind that diversification does not protect an investor from potential loss. 44

By Dennis Shu

Volatility, or the degree of variation of returns over time for a particular security or market index, is a consideration, but it generally is not as important to an investor with a long-term time horizon. For instance, someone who is investing for retirement in 30 years should not be too concerned if an investment bounces around from one day to the next. What is important is that the investment continues to perform up to expectations. You can potentially manage the effects of volatility by investing the money you may need in the short term (within five years or so) in a more conservative investment, while choosing to be more aggressive with the money you have earmarked for use in 15 to 20 years. Liquidity risk is the risk that a given security cannot be traded quickly enough in the market to avoid a loss or to achieve the desired profit. If you invest in a stock that “trades by appointment only,” you may get a low price if you are forced to sell the issue on short notice. You may be able to reduce liquidity risk by focusing on large, actively traded companies such as those included in the S&P 500.4 Finally, one sometimes overlooked risk is that of falling short of reaching a long-term financial goal. Investing too conservatively may contribute to not reaching an accumulation target. Remember that despite several down cycles, stock prices have historically risen over longer time periods. Past performance, however, does not guarantee future results. A Healthy Market Decline It’s important to remember that periods of falling prices are a natural and healthy part of investing in the stock market. While professional investors may use a variety of trading tools to hedge their portfolios against a sudden drop in the market, perhaps the best move you can make is managing your overall exposure to the risks discussed above. Investing in stocks involves risks, including loss of principal. 2 Bonds are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rates rise and are subject to availability and change in price. 3 There is no guarantee that a diversified portfolio will enhance overall returns or outperform a nondiversified portfolio. Diversification does not ensure against market risk. 4 Standard & Poor’s Composite Index of 500 Stocks is an unmanaged index that is generally considered representative of the U.S. stock market. It is not possible to invest directly in an index. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. 1
