D
ear Fellow Members;
This is my final presidential letter, as my term will be officially complete at the end of this month. I trust I will see you all at our Annual Chapter Awards Gala on September 24th, for the official passing of the gavel to our incoming president, Lisa Bagbey Tullai and the introduction of your new incoming board members. The highlight of the evening of course, will be the announcement of our 2014 Design Award winners. All indications are that this year’s event, with its Masquerade Ball theme at the Historic Savage Mill setting, promises to surpass even last year’s fabulously successful Inner Harbor Dinner Cruise. It will be a wonderful evening as we honor those who have served us this past year, recognize our deserving award winners and welcome Lisa and her leadership vision for the upcoming year. Serving you the last two years has been a whirlwind of events and exciting encounters with Society members across the country and industry professionals of every stripe. It has truly been an honor to serve you and privilege to work with so many distinguished professionals. Every board member and countless volunteers have worked very hard to fulfill our strategic objectives in pursuit of providing member driven educational and networking opportunities, improving chapter communications and recruiting and maintaining our membership. We were so very fortunate to have continued outstanding support from so many of our member Industry Partners. They have proven time and again to be such reliable partners, enabling us to deliver a wide variety of Lunch & Learn CEU programs; in addition to sponsorship of major events including the Spring & Fall Home & Garden Show, Student Career Day, NeoCon, Trade Secrets Design Resources and of course our Annual Awards Dinner. Hopefully you have taken advantage of actually reading at least some of the communications that you regularly receive from ASID HQ via e-blasts, ICON Magazine, etc. Even the occasional reader will note that significant changes have been underway within the Society over the last year or so, commonly referred to as ASID 2.0. These changes go far beyond just the recent physical move of the Society offices. As Randy Fiser, ASID Executive VP/CEO has explained, “ASID 2.0 is intended to advance the Society’s organizational goals in a comprehensive and meaningful way. These initiatives are intended to be integrated into everything ASID does as an organization going forward; including educational offerings, research initiatives and policy work”. This new and exciting plan has a singular focus to better communicate the role ASID will continue to play in demonstrating the impact of interior design and the benefits of working with our members. This strategy and plan has been presented to Chapter Boards at national leadership events and will be integrated into local chapter activities over time. Thankfully, one of the most visible changes will be the integrated development of the national and chapter websites. I encourage all of you to provide input and feedback as these changes are implement. As I reflect on the past year, I recognize that there has been much accomplished and yet so much more we wish we could have done. The economy and the industry is making slow but steady progress that has business implications for us all. After all, we are all volunteers but we all need to sustain ourselves both personally and professionally. I see faces of all of those individuals and companies that have assisted us to deliver quality programs to the membership and enabled us to achieve a modest improvement in the chapter’s financial viability. It’s been a learning year and a growing year for the chapter and for me personally. There are many more challenges ahead but I can assure you that the chapter is in very capable hands. I thank you all, board members and volunteers alike, for your support, hard work and dedication. Thank You and Warmest Regards,
Margaret Nelson, Allied ASID ASID Maryland President 2014

The Campaign for Wool
O
n Thursday, 12th June 2014 Mr. John Ginsburg and his wife, Jill Davidson Ginsburg were invited to a reception for Campaign for Wool at Clarence House. John (President of Floors Etc) and Jill had the privilege to represent Floors Etc, a leading wool merchant in the Baltimore/Washington area, at the reception. “The Campaign for Wool is a global endeavour initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in order to raise awareness amongst consumers about the unique, natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits offered by the fibre. Encouraging collaboration between an international community of woolgrowers, major fashion designers, retailers, manufacturers, artisans and interior designers, the Campaign has been instrumental in educating consumers about the versatility of wool, and reconnecting them with its myriad uses; From luxurious fine merino knitwear and cloth through beautiful hardwearing interior products to fire-retardant insulation for the home. Since its launch in 2010, The Campaign for Wool has influenced a new demand for wool on an international scale, and its efforts have seen an outstanding threefold increase in the price farmers receive for their wool.” – www.campaignforwool.org Floors Etc was ecstatic to receive an invitation to join the Campaign. For over 122 years Floors has brought many different products to the Baltimore area. One product that has not changed too much over those years has
been wool. Clients who have purchased wool rugs when Floors Etc first opened, as N. Ginsberg and Son, most likely still have that rug today, in great condition. For many years, Floors Etc has been one of the leading merchants of wool flooring in the Baltimore/Washington area, as a leading merchant Floors Etc is honored to give back to the wool industry.

ASID Maryland Educates Visitors During Local Home & Garden Show
By Lisa Bagbey Tullai
E
ach Spring and Fall, ASID Maryland participates in the Maryland Home & Garden Show at the Timonium Fairgrounds. This past Spring, the Maryland Home & Garden Show’s theme was “Color My World.” With the help of several Industry Partners and the creative flair of volunteers, the ASID Maryland booth displayed a colorful banner and pictures, two seating areas with brightly colored floor tiles , and a television monitor with a rolling slide show of pictures provided by ASID Maryland Designers of their work. While the location and theme of the ASID Maryland booth changes each time, we always offer complimentary 20-minute “Ask a Designer” sessions to visitors in an effort to provide exposure for our Designers to potential clients, to allow new Designers the hands-on experience of meeting and capturing new clients, and – most importantly - to educate the public on ASID. This year, we went one step further by handing out flyers to passersby with information on ASID, why one should work with an ASID Designer, and providing the web address to our database of local Designers. The rolling slide show also provided a visual of the types of projects and capabilities of our ASID Designers, which led to many question/answer sessions. During the Home & Garden Show, many educational sessions are also offered to the public. Holly Frye-Atcherson, ASID, lectured on “Why Work with a Designer” with references to ASID as an additional effort to inform consumers.

Our endeavors to educate the public would not have been successful without the many Designers who donated their time to staff the booth over two consecutive weekends or the generosity of our Industry Partners who provided furniture, a display monitor, and carpet tiles (and helped us set up and break down!) Thank you to the following Designers for volunteering their time: Lauryn Murphy, Lisa Steinhardt, Karen Osborne, Kitt Frome, Holly Frye-Atcherson, Elaine Buderer, Barbara Brown, Debbie McHale, Vanessa Grant, Evelyn Gorman, Gwen Legg, Jessi Rolko, Wendy Appleby, Norbert Young, and Lisa Bagbey Tullai. We are also so appreciative to the following Industry Partners for their donations and support: Floors Etc., Blockhouse Furniture, David Edwards, and Gramophone. A survey that went out to all the volunteers after the event revealed that over 100 visitors entered the booth, several Designers obtained viable leads through the event either directly or through a referral, and the experience, booth theme, and likelihood of volunteering again in the future was excellent. The Fall Home & Garden Show is scheduled for October 17 – 19, 2014. We are currently seeking Designers to help develop, organize, and staff the ASID Maryland booth. Please contact Lisa Bagbey Tullai at lisa@lisabagbeyinteriors.com or 410.212.4019 to volunteer.
