Hello Fellow Members! The summer is coming to a close, just when it seems to have just started! It is funny how this is corresponds to my year as president of our chapter here in New England. I feel as though it had just begun and now I am ending my term. Time flies when you are truly having fun! This year, I have been fully supported by my Board of Directors, Nina our Executive Administrator, Committee Members(you all rock) with their countless hours of volunteerism and dedication. You are so fortunate, as members, to have such a dynamic team, working on providing you with member benefits in networking events, cultural events, CEU’s, the Business Conference, the Annual Gala, the Annual Meeting and the Design Completion! Whew! That is a lot of value! Are YOU taking advantage of your membership? That is the piece of personal responsibility we just are not able to provide! Becoming involved in our Chapter has provided me with resources in my fellow colleagues, owning my firm, they have become my “Board of Directors” I have met countless friends and found wonderful sources in our Industry Partners. I recently gave a talk with Eric Haydel at Wentworth Institute of Technology, and this is pretty much what I conveyed to the students! Join a professional membership, but you must make the most of it! Come to our events, showcase your work in our design competition, learn about our IP’s products! You will be surprised at all the other wonderful benefits that come in friendships made and in increasing your value as a designer, design student, educator and Industry Partner. So mark your calendars for the Design Competition, the Business Conference, and the Gala just to name a few or volunteer for Career Day and Real World Design Week, where you can pass on your love of design and knowledge. We would love to see you there! On a final note, I would like to thank you all for your support this past year! I have truly been touched by the friendships and dedication. I look forward to serving on our National Chapter Service Team starting October 1st where I will continue to laugh, make friends and enjoy my ASID membership. I look forward to seeing you all at some of our events this coming year! Warmly,

Board Messages Jeanne Finnerty, ASID

Sheryll Strohl-Hammett, ASID

President-Elect

Director of Membership

Recently, a “small kitchen” project of mine was admired on the web. They were inspired to write to me for a new plan for their own kitchen. I am in the business of design services, not selling design plans, but, I had to ask, “Where do you live?” They responded: “I live in Ireland, and my home is in Lithuania”. Ok!? Why don’t we talk about how I can help. I love a challenge…geographic or otherwise. I can now bear witness to the global economy. Who knows where it will go, but, I know the journey will be entertaining. When the incoming board journeyed to Los Angeles for the Chapter Leadership Conference in June, we came up with a one-word concept for the upcoming year, “connectedness”. Our new CEO, Randy Fiser, spends 75% of his time on the road. He travels to meet and talk to all the building industry organizations, NKBA, IIDA, DFA, BOMA, AIA…the list goes on. ASID understands that interior design professionals need to be part of the conversation of all the building industry organizations. We are all under the same umbrella with similar goals. The ASIDNE board of director’s and committees are looking forward to connecting with one another other, with all of our members, and with our entire design community. Come to an event and share in the conversation with us.

When this magazine is in your hands Summer of 2013 will be over. We on your New England Chapter of ASID’s Board of Directors will be embarking on a new year. (The Board’s year runs from October 1 through September 30.) We’ve had an exciting summer that has provided us with great memories. We’ve worked hard for you and have been gratified by our success. For me one of the highlights of this past summer was organizing and planning a big special event for June, the Membership Month. My co--chair in this endeavor was the Emerging Professional Affairs Chair to the Board, Eric Haydel. His energy is infectious and together we made a terrific team. Our Art Walk and Member Celebration June 6 was a success. So much so that we had many requests to repeat it next June. In case you missed it three of our Industry partners and ten art galleries in the first four blocks of Newbury Street participated. The evening was spirited and inspiring ending with a Member Celebration at MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS’ Boston flagship showroom with food, fun, drinks, laughter, chatter, old friends, new friends. (Please read about it in the article in this issue.) Be sure to join us next year!

As they say in Lithuania, Iki pasimatymo!

Jill Janasiewicz, Allied ASID Director of Professional Development

Cheryl Morrison, Allied ASID Director of Finance It has been a pleasure to serve on the board for the last five years: first as your membership director and then as your finance director. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many of our members and cherish those experiences. Although we have had a number of financial challenges thrown at us from National this year, the major one being the reinstating of the CLC conference for board members, we have done remarkably well. Due to your support by attending our events and good fiscal management by the board we are still maintaining a decent balance in our checking account and have not as yet dipped into our rainy day fund. If you keep up your support of the events that we bring you, I’m sure that our chapter will continue to thrive. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Business Conference in November.

I hope that you all have enjoyed your summer. It goes by so quickly. As we prepare for fall, we here are preparing for two key events. The first one is the Design Competition Awards on September 19th. The entries are in and now we cannot wait to see all the interiors that were entered. I was fortunate enough to sit on the committee and the ladies who have organized this event are amazing and I hope that you will plan on celebrating our industry and fellow designers. Along with the Design Awards, we are combining the event with the DSS (Distinguished Speaker Series). This year Angela Merola will be the speaker. Some of you may have heard her back in 2010 and she is back with a new series. Also this is the last of the series as National has decided to retire the program. We are preparing for I on Business Fall Conference scheduled for October 24th. This is a great opportunity to receive your needed CEU credits before the end of the year. I know that IDCEC has sent out the notice about the December 31st deadline. So mark your calendar for the event and network, see new products, learn a few things and earn some credits. I hope to see you at both events. As always, feel free to contact me with any suggestions on topics you would like to learn about.

The Dirtt on the MFS Project By Jeanne Finnerty, ASID For the past thirteen years, Larry Ryan, ASID, has had a unique job for an interior designer. He is an in-house designer for a mutual fund company, MFS Investments. A recent renovation project is the foremost of his career: 310,000 square feet for the headquarters in Boston’s Back Bay, plus, 46,000 square feet of workspace around the globe including Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Brazil, and Toronto. I sat down with Larry to ask him about it. JF: What were the goals your company had for the overall design of the project? LR: It began with three words, flexibility, mobility, and, adjustability. We wanted to create an open environment with full glass offices to make the most of natural light. We thought about the future of the space, and how it will be used in five years, ten years. The current trend of open office space is not our culture. Privacy panels were essential, as well as a versatile system for expansion and contraction of offices and workstations. JF: Are the glass offices throughout the space? Did you have any executives/managers who did not want a glass office? LR: The concept for full glass offices was our plan from the beginning. We installed “DIRTT “ a year before the build-out so that the employees could really see and feel the new office space. It is very different from our former office. Management was involved and supported us every step of the way. In fact, all of our executives have full glass walls too. JF: What is “DIRTT”? LR: It is a demountable wall system –-or a prefabricated wall solution- that is manufactured in Calgary Canada. It stands for “do it right this time”. Our units have a real wood veneer applied to a metal frame. It is a great product that makes our space completely flexible. I can't say enough about it! JF: Communication is so critical on a design project...how many people/ companies were on the project team? LR: We had a great team, beginning with Strategic Workspaces who represents DIRTT, Fox, CBT Architects and our long time contractors Structure Tone. We also had numerous consultants helping us along as well. Our MFS team was consisted of me and Bob Landrigan along with a handful of internal IT folks who helped coordinate AV, networking and communications.

JF: What was the most challenging part of this project? LR: The Audio Visual and dealing with changes during the process, and how to integrate high performance technology into the design, space, and furniture. We have over 80 conference rooms with custom tables and two interactive smart boards. Each table was custom made by Datesweiser. The design was a collaborative effort but Datesweiser was so helpful in creating these tables. They all have built-in microphones and speakers. JF: Now that it is complete, would you change anything about the process or any elements of the design if you could do it all again? LR: We did mock-ups of three wall systems. Looking back, I think I should have listened to my intuition and moved forward with DIRTT and not done the other mock-ups. It was very time consuming and costly to install three options. JF: You have a great, unique job, are the sole in-house designer at MFS? LR: I am the only in-house interior designer in the company. At times we do work in conjunction with architects here and around the world. My

background in facilities planning and systems furniture was a perfect match for this job. The position has grown into more responsibility over the years. Because I am an interior designer, I have been able to bring an expertise to the company, there is less outsourcing on smaller projects.

LR: I love space planning but working on our international projects has been very interesting, but mostly, I have been able to give opportunities to businesses that have worked with me and who have been so loyal to me while here at MFS. Some of these people I've known in the industry for more than 20 years. For example, WB Mason provided all the Gunlocke and Workrite bases, an ergonomic height adjustable base, to each office and workstation we have, which is a nice benefit for employee wellness. Our panels and seating are from Herman Miller represented by COP and other reps and dealers who were so important to this project were Ritz Associates, Boston Art, Peabody office, Office Environments and Office Resource. Just a little name dropping, but there were so many people involved and to thank.

The City of Angels By Jeanne Finnerty, ASID

“Please come to LA to live forever. Sing it with me. California life alone is just too hard to build. I live in a house that looks out over the ocean…”

The focus of the conference was leadership training. Prior to our arrival we all filled out the Clifton Strengths Finder to prepare for our weekend and to “discover what makes us stand out”. Dwell on Design was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. There were an astounding 400 exhibitors and 2000 products on display in the 200,000 square foot space. We visited with many of our long-time Industry Partners, such as FLOR, Legrand, and Hansgrohe, and some new ones as well, like Big Ass Fans! I ran into an old friend, Sophie Cox, ASID. Sophie and I crossed paths when she was an intern at Heather G. Wells, Ltd. She has since passed the NCIDQ, become a professional member of ASID and is the Communications Director for the Montana chapter - go Sophie!

The annual ASID Awards Gala, Celebration, was an elegant event at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. For movie buffs, this hotel was one of the original locations for the Academy Awards – the last one, in 1942. The glamorous stars of the thirties and forties, pictured in the enormous black and white photographs were displayed in the lobby. We walked the original “red carpet” into the building. It was quite a scene. An impressive group of dedicated and talented designers across the country were honored in a festive 1920’s themed ceremony. Our national president, Barbara Marini, was eloquent and poised as the master of ceremonies. All the awardees and projects are listed on the national website – check them out. Presenting our unique collection of authentically hand-crafted rugs and broadloom.

The Chapter Leadership Conference is held each year for the incoming board of directors. It is one way for the board to spend time talking and planning the year, and meeting other chapter leaders for an exchange of ideas.

Summer Cruise on the Charles Once again the New England Chapters of ASID and IFDA gathered together on the Charles Rive Cruiseline for a fun evening of networking. Though the weather was rather misty, we managed to cruise along the Charles with flair. It was wonderful to see our IFDA friends and meet many new ones in ASID as well. A handful of students from the BAC and NESAD joined us for the evening as well.

Great time with Industry Partners, designers and students!
