BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Cheryl Morrison, Allied ASID (978) 927-2005 cheryl@morrisonremodeling.com President-Elect Eric Haydel, Allied ASID (617) 562-6027 emhdesigninc@gmail.com Financial Director Jill Janasiewicz, Allied ASID jillj1@verizon.net Communications Director Shalini Sookar, Allied ASID (617) 223-7240 shalini.sookar@gmail.com Professional Development Director Alinka Amoroso, ASID Industry Partner (617) 350-0836 aamoroso@knoll.com Emerging Professionals Director Ryan Tirrell, Allied ASID (603) 969-5630 rstirrell@gmail.com
First, I would like to thank Lisa Buyuk for all of her hard work, which has made my job of taking over this position much easier! I would also like to thank the Board of Directors for their vote of confidence that I could effectively lead our Society forward with ASID 2.0. You may have heard the term ASID 2.0 and wondered what it was all about. In a nutshell, it is template for reversing the downward trend of our membership numbers, renewing our commitment to research in the interior design industry, and revitalizing our strategies to engage and include the Y generation while keeping our Baby Boomers and Gen Xers involved and committed. Not too difficult, eh? There are a number of videos available on asid.org that talk about where we are as a society, how did we get here, what our options are moving forward and what our national board has decided to do, ultimately resulting in what they call ASID 2.0. I would strongly encourage all of you to view these videos. With the introduction of ASID 2.0 and the National Board restarting the three-year strategic plan to begin with the 2014-2015 year rather than the 2015-2016 year, I have spent the better part of the summer developing our chapter’s strategic plan (SP.) Many thanks to our planning team: Jeanne Finnerty, Holly Vogel, Rachel Pike, Eric Haydel, Nina Hayes, Jennifer Bardsly, Alinka Amorosa, and Jill Janasiewicz. As a group, we completed our first brainstorming session in time for the Chapter Leadership Conference (see article included in this newsletter). Several workshops focused on developing the strategic plan, as well as offered first hand direction from members of our National Board of Directors. Once we arrived back in Boston, the SP team reconvened and with new knowledge and renewed enthusiasm, finalized the tactics and strategies for our chapter. I believe that we have developed a comprehensive plan for our chapter that will be a great springboard for revitalizing and growing our chapter here in New England.
Director At Large Rosemary Porto, ASID Industry Partner (617) 236-5253 rosemary.porto@poggenpohl.com
In conjunction with the SP, as President-elect, I am charged to develop a budget that supports the plan. The decision was made in preplanning, that we needed to rethink how we develop our budgets to support and expand our memberships and its’ offerings to our members. Rather than laying the burden almost solely on the President-elect and Finance Director, I opted to pull a team together to work on the budget. This team consisted of the chairs/co-chairs of our major events, the current President, the future President-Elect and of course the Finance Director. We believe that by implementing this process the chapter will now have a leadership team that truly understands and supports the budgeting process. Thus resulting in a stronger budget and a more finically sound chapter for the future.
Student Representative Holly Vogel, Student ASID (617) 216-0475 hollyelise7@gmail.com
In closing, I would like to say that I am very much looking forward to the upcoming year. I welcome comments and suggestions, constructive criticism and of course pats on the back☺ My email address is cheryl@morrisonremodeling.com. If you would like to meet with me, please feel free to email me.

Board Messages Eric Haydel, Allied ASID President-Elect At ASID our role is to support all those who strive to further the design industry and embrace the roles of our professionals despite their chosen title or area of specialty. We are the ONLY design organization that supports every area within the interior design umbrella. Over the next year you will have the opportunity to join us as we embark on a new way of communicating our design value and strive to show the community that what we do as designers matters. Part of this process is for each of us to reach out to one another and develop new relationships and foster our already formed relationships. Think outside the box and see how you can meet someone new, example: IP to Student or Educator. It is important to remember that we are an inclusive society, a growing and changing society, and an expanding society. As long as we are making positive movement forward for our profession, we will continue to be successful. I invite you to join your New England Board in extending your hand to mentor one another, industry partners and our students.

design firm, Jennifer Bardsley Interior Design. Extremely proud of my acceptance I continued to build my business knowing membership into the Society, one of the highest marks of professionalism, would help me advance my career even further. Since my involvement in the Chapter, ASID has become an important piece of my continued growth as a professional, most importantly affording me the opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals who are dedicated to the advancement of the design profession. It is for this reason I am very excited to start my role as Membership Director and am honored to join the very collaborative, dynamic group of professionals that make up our newly elected Board of Directors. Our organization has never been more dedicated to advancing the professionalism of Interior Design through year round educational opportunities for all design disciplines, offering meaningful interactions between the trade and supportive Industry Partners, and most importantly, mentoring and fostering our student membership, our next generation of Designers. As the New England Chapter Membership Director, I look forward to sharing my ASID experience with new members and learning from those more experienced in the organization as we continue to make our Society a meaningful one for all of our membership.
Director of Finance Our new year has started and I am excited to be a part of the Board of Directors again. This year, my focus will not be on the events but on the profitability of the chapter. I moved into this position last June once Cheryl Morrison vacated it for bigger and better things. For those who do not know me or my story, I started my career in finance graduating with a BS in Finance from Bentley University. I moved from finance to corporate design (I am sure you can see the correlation) and eventually made my way to NESAD where I got my Master’s in Interior Design. I joined ASID as a student and got involved upon meeting Mary Beth Haggerty. I have met and worked with amazing individuals and I know that I will continue to do so. It has been such a rewarding experience for me. I hope to see you all at the many events we have scheduled for the upcoming year. Please look at the calendar and take advantage of all of the opportunities that come with your membership.
Jen Bardsley, Allied ASID Director of Membership When ASID confirmed my membership some time ago, I vividly remember preparing for my interview, putting my materials together and documenting my education and design experience as I entered into my tenth year as sole-proprietor of my

Shalini Sookar, Allied ASID Director of Communications Hello everyone! It's been an active start to my term, updating and registering across various social platforms. These days it seems like few people read printed material, yet everyone is busy pinning on Pinterest or communicating using 140 characters or less on Twitter or my (personal favorite!) using photos to tell a story on Instagram! How we interact and build relationships really has changed dramatically in recent times. In an effort to stay current and to communicate effectively, we are making a few changes in how we reach out to you. There will be much more activity across a wide variety of communication modes digital and printed! So, look out for us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest & LinkedIn. I encourage you all to follow and like us, share your posts with us and tag us in your photos! And don't forget to check out our new Eventbrite page for tickets to local happenings. #asidne to share news or just say hello, we love to hear what New England is up to!
Alinka Amoroso, ASID Industry Partner Director of Professional Development It is my pleasure to be starting my second year on the ASID NE board in a new position, Director of Professional Development. As an industry partner, I am delighted to have the chance to connect with the design community and evaluate the types of CEUs that are of interest and benefit to our members and make them accessible to everyone. During the past year, ASID NE has presented CEUs in Maine and Vermont. We hope to broaden our reach throughout all of New England this year. As an account manager for Knoll, I travel the entire New England territory and welcome the opportunity to visit with you. I particularly love to visit places that are off the beaten path, so please feel free to put me to the challenge and introduce me to some place new. If you are interested in presenting a CEU or have a particular topic that you would like to see covered, please let me know. aamoroso@knoll.com
Ryan Tirrell, Allied ASID Emerging Professional Affairs Chair My name is Ryan Tirrell, and I am your Emerging Professionals Chair for 2014-2015. I own and operate Ryan Tirrell Design in the Seacoast of New Hampshire. I am thrilled to be a member of this innovative and ambitious community of emerging designers. One of our goals at ASID New England is to reach out to the growing number of designers entering the work force. In order to develop a stronger community within the design field we're trying something new; organizing an Emerging Professionals Cocktail hour once a month in Boston. It's a great way to meet and network with other young designers outside of the office! Our goal is to create a professional, and social support system for all designers in New England. We hope to see many new faces each month!
Rosemary Porto, ASID Industry Partner Director at Large For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Rosemary Porto. I have been an interior designer in the Boston area since 1985. I specialize in high-end kitchen and bath design that integrates luxury with a function-first mindset. I currently work as the senior designer for Poggenpohl, Boston. I join the ASIDNE board as the Director at Large. I’m not really sure why it is called “at Large” and not “at Small” or “at Medium” but I’ll stick with the title for now. In my position as Director at Large, I will be placing a big focus on our Industry Partners. We have already had one Industry Partner Focus group event and plan to have a few more in the upcoming year. While showing our appreciation for their support of our Society, we also want to solicit their input for what we, as a chapter, can do to enhance our relationships with our Industry Partners.
I will be working closely with the Membership Director to help achieve our Chapter growth objectives. I have already begun to build an Industry Partner committee to help to identify and address opportunities for improvement and growth within our chapter. If you would like to be a part of this committee, please let me know. All are welcome. I look forward to meeting all of you at our upcoming events in 2015.
Holly Vogel, Student ASID Student Representative to the Board It was just a few years ago that I was working in the field of international marketing and communications, daydreaming about becoming an interior designer. Fast forward, I am now enthusiastically learning all things design as I work toward earning my Master’s degree in Interior Architecture at NESAD at Suffolk University. In preparing for this wonderful new opportunity to serve as your SRB this year, I have seen firsthand how ASID has the unique ability to inspire, engage, and open doors for its members. I look forward to an eventful year ahead, through planning activities and sharing information about all that ASID has to offer the student member community. Our team has plans for some exciting student events up our sleeves, and we will keep you posted! In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me anytime, at hvogel@suffolk.edu.
Sarah Campernel, ASID Student Affairs Committee Chair Hi Everyone! I am honored to be your Student Affairs Committee Chair. I have met so many wonderful people through ASID NE over the past few years and I am happy to be able to give back to the organization. For those of you who don't already know me, I am an Assistant Professor of Interior Design at Endicott College where I also volunteer as the interior design student organization faculty advisor. In addition to my work at Endicott, I also own and operate Campernel Design Studio. I am passionate about experiential design and how places can influence people through environmental psychology. There are a lot of exciting opportunities coming up for students to collaborate and network with each other and industry professionals over the next few months, so stay tuned! It is my responsibility to ensure that design students are educated, supported, and inspired by our members and that they become and remain engaged on both the Chapter and National level as contributors to our design community. We can achieve this through social events, design competitions, workshops, etc...the possibilities are endless! I always welcome suggestions and feedback for ways to improve and sustain these efforts, so please feel free to reach out with your ideas. Cheers!

The program for the evening set the stage to honor its own - listed in the printed program distributed to all attendees: all past presidents; chapter Industry Partner Merit awardees and Practitioner Medalist awardees; William Hodgins as our chapter’s only National Designer of Distinction, Bierly - Drake as National design awardee; numerous Life Members; and Jane Garland Lucas, as a 2014 inductee into the ASID Council of Fellows.
Editor’s Welcome By Diana Kennedy, Allied ASID
Happy New Year! I hope that your 2015 is filled with billJane Garland Lucas, FASID, has been described as the “designer’s designer”. Her design and business expertise is widely known and highly regarded in Boston and now in Austin, TX, where she moved with her husband a few years ago. The professional members of both the NE and Texas chapters supported Jane’s nomination to Fellow. She served her profession: as one of the original presidents of the (NEIDC, now the MIDC) interior design coalition for licensure. She has received over 50 awards for design excellence in practice and volunteer leadership. Fellowship is the highest national award granted to ASID members who have demonstrated, throughout their professional career, a high level of involvement in chapter and national leadership, in community outreach, in student education and professional development,
able hours and dream clients. The ASID Billings Index has pointed to steady growth in our magnificent industry, as noted by National President Randy Fiser during his keynote speech at the "I" on Design Business Conference in November, making the dream ever more achievable.
New years inevitably bring change, and the same rings true for Design Matters. I will be stepping down as editor as my own practice continues to grow. It has been a pleasure to serve in this position, and I will be throwing my full support behind my successor Sarah Burgess when she steps in starting with the Spring issue.
Please join me in welcoming Sarah, and I wish all of you continued success.

“I” on Design Business Conference By Design Community Staff The “I” on Design Business Conference was held on Tuesday, November 4 at the Courtyard Marriott in Boston’s Theater District. As it has in the past, the conference was designed to encourage participants to explore the “I”s of any design business: Innovation, Influence, Ingenuity, and Integration.
Keynote Speaker for the conference was Randy Fiser, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of ASID National.
Fiser stressed the importance of the work done by the ASID Foundation towards its numerous charitable efforts, selecting two noteworthy causes to highlight. Locally, the Foundation is supporting Dress for Success to empower women by not just providing suits but through mentors that help the newly employed with daytoday career management. Nationally, ASID sponsors the Clinton Global Initiative, particularly the effort to reduce healthcare issues and costs in the work place and in public buildings through design. You can find out more about the ASID Foundation’s programs and how to contribute at www.asidfoundation.org.
As Quarterly Billing Indexes continue to rise, we must take advantage of the growth in the industry by attracting new members. According to Fiser, the key to the organization’s growth is through its student organizations. There are currently 300 ASID student organizations. The best way to support the
student organizations is through their educators. Rachel Pike made this point at last year’s gala, that educators need people to volunteer to be a thesis advisor or a guest critic, and to provide feedback to CIDA to help shape future programs.
The most exciting announcement of Fiser’s speech was the official confirmation of the Chapter Leadership Conference in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of ASID will take place in Boston next summer. This is a huge honor and undertaking for our chapter, so please be sure to volunteer your time to make it happen! Email asidnewengland@gmail.com for more information.
Participants then had the opportunity to earn up to 0.5 CEU credits in workshops created and run by many of the day’s sponsors, while also visiting with those sponsors in the exhibit hall to learn more about their products and services for the design industry. Those sponsors who deserve hearty thanks include: American Window Film Inc., Benjamin Moore Paints, The Bright Group, Caesarstone, Closet Factory, Colony Rug Company, Crestron, Dwell Magazine, Edelman Leather, FBN Construction, F.W. Webb Company, Gaggenau, Illuminate, NIBA Rug Collections, Knoll Studio, Landry & Arcari, Legrand, Moen, Microseal Boston, Pioneer Millworks, Poggenpohl, S+H Construction, and Spinneybeck|filzfelt.
We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s “I” on Design Business Conference.
