President’s Message

Spring is at our door and as we usher in this season of reawakening, we all look forward to warmer temperatures and longer (and sunnier!) days.

ASID turns 40 this year! Watch for lots of celebratory happenings from our national organization throughout the year. At the end of February, I had the pleasure of traveling to Phoenix, Ariz. to participate in ASID’s annual Presidents Forum. This is the meeting where

ASID national shares new and near future developments with all the chapter presidents. It’s also the chapter presidents’ opportunity to give ASID feedback about our concerns and challenges.

Through roundtable discussions , we were able to share information with other chapters and with members of ASID’s Chapter Support Team (CST). We discussed what is working well for

our chapters and what needs improvement. The conversation included the students and Emerging Professionals, Programs, Membership and, of course, the Industry Partner Experience. This was helpful on so many different levels as chapters were able to share their strengths and their struggles with one another. I must tell you all how proud I was of our chapter as we outperform many other chapters by a long shot.

In the last issue of NJ Inspire, I wrote about the ASID foundation and how at CLC a group of us won a silent auction bid for a dinner at Christopher Hylan's home.

This auction raised money for the ASID Foundation.

You may not realize that every chapter has an annual chapter challenge to raise $2,700 for the Foundation within our fiscal year. I am delighted to report that at Presidents Forum our chapter not only met our challenge but we surpassed it! I was proud to receive a certificate of recognition on behalf of ASID NJ. During the Presidents Forum, ASID unveiled the

Over the years, approximately $3,850,000 has been raised for the Foundation. By ASID’s 40th “Celebration” in July at Chapter Leadership

Conference (CLC) in Boston, the goal is to bring this total to $4 million. “Celebration,” the Society’s national awards event, is an exciting part of CLC. It’s a great way for us to see what is happening on a national level and how it filters down to the chapter level. I definitely plan to attend . . . and I encourage all of you to think about coming, too. Boston is not that far—easy to reach by train or carpool—and there will be a special rate on hotels. In addition to the conference activities, the host city IPs always plan great local excursions that highlight the area and what it is famous for. Please let me know if you are interested in attending.

The second annual ASID Design to Lead Summit is now open for registration. The leadership conference will be held on April 13 in Washington, D.C. and is designed to provide aspiring Cont. on page 5

On Saturday, April 11, our chapter will be participating in Habitat for Humanity’s 5K Walk/Run at Overpeck County Park in Leonia. The ASID NJ name and logo will be on all the t-shirts and printed materials. We will also have a table set up at the event where we will distribute information to the public. Please plan on joining us to support this worthy cause!

ASIdeas Best New Product & Best Booth Awards: Several years ago, the Marketing Committee developed the Best New Product and Best Booth awards in order to give some additional recognition to those Industry Partners who support our trade show. Candidates for Best New Product will be displayed in a special, supervised area on the trade show floor.

To qualify, the product or service must have been introduced to the marketplace any time after May 2014. A ballot will be made available to each attendee so they can vote for their favorite.

Spruce It Up: Our Spruce It Up program has three objectives: to give back to the community, to raise awareness of the value of working with an interior designer, and to promote the ASID brand.

We were successful on all three counts. We raised almost $13,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Participating consumers wrote the check to the Habitat affiliate of their choice. In early December, Hope Sferra, Allied ASID, who chaired the program, and Chapter President Michael Mariotti, ASID delivered checks to the Morristown Habitat Affiliate, who will, in turn, deliver them to the appropriate Habitat affiliates.

For 2015, the Spruce It Up program will run from October 1-31. The beneficiary will again be Habitat for Humanity.

The winners will be announced at 6:00 pm on the trade show floor and plaques will be awarded. Photos will be taken on the trade show floor for publicity purposes. Publicity will include recognition in NJ Inspire, as well as on our public Facebook page. Post-trade-show, we will supply the winners with a digital version of the award, as well as a copy of the publicity photo, to use on the winners’ websites and social media outlets.

Newsletter

by Susan Barbieri, ASID The newsletter committee is seeking volunteers to contribute write-ups, and/or to edit and organize submitted information for our quarterly NJ Inspire publication. This is a terrific magazine that allows us the benefit of highlighting our chapter and featuring our members up close.

Our group has a phone conference four times per year to discuss the content of the issue at hand. The remainder of work is done mainly through e-mail communications.

by Brooke Morales, Allied ASID This is our second year partnering with the Make-a-Wish Foundation and our NJ designers have risen to the task! MAW has chapters across the U.S. and its business is solely to grant the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, which they believe can be a game-changer. Wishes can range from a trip to Disneyland or the Super Bowl or simply to meet the Pope. We’ve been blessed to contribute our design creativity to the kids who would like to make over the space that they spend so much of their time in.

CHAPTER NEWS Pat Valentine Ziv, ASID was one of the designers who contributed recently to a wish from 16-year-old Nate who knew he would be spending a lot of time in his second floor bedroom and wanted a more comfortable space to play his games and quickly reach a soda or snack. After lots of planning and design, Pat coordinated a four day transformation of Nate’s tiny cape bedroom into a bright Rutgers-themed game room with space for storage, a mini refrigerator as well as his games, and brightened it up with fun LED cove lighting and new Flor carpet tiles.

Heather McManus, Associate ASID also lent her creativity to make a 7-year-old girl’s wish for rainbows and hot pink come true.

Heather delivered a cozy new room full of rainbow colors and ponies on the wall that she will enjoy into her teens with very little changes. Heather said her ‘favorite part of the whole process was “seeing this cutie pie jump up and down, squealing with joy when I unloaded the car filled with her wishes.”

Iris’s first wish was for a 10-year-old girl who is spending all of her time in the family’s living space in a rental house due to the need for so much medical equipment, nurses and therapy. The grateful family communicated her wish for pink and Cinderella as well as more comfortable seating and lighting for her daily activities. A custom Asian Cinderella wall mural was created to adhere to the two walls viewed from her hospital bed. Iris also brought in Ikea storage furniture, exercise mats and a leather recliner as well as other decorative elements with touches of pink to bring some joy into the space.

Iris’s second wish and most challenging project was for a 15-year-old girl looking for a Hollywood Glam room makeover in lavender and white.

Half of the basement of her family’s home had been converted into her new space but it was still open to the laundry room with exposed columns and it needed to be fully furnished. Lots of planning, donations from vendors and plenty of creativity later and a gorgeous boudoir for a young girl came to life!

Kelsie at Make-a-Wish wrote “Our room makeovers are wonderful wishes for our children! My favorite part about them is that after a project is complete, the wish doesn’t have to end there. A child can continue to enjoy their new room for years to come!” Some important qualities in a designer for this program are passion and dedication for the cause to grant wishes for these children as well as flexibility and the ability to be self-sufficient. February Pick-Your-Booth & Meeting Recap On February 3rd, our chapter held a combined event: ASIdeas Pick Your Booth night and “The Human Connection: Bringing Your Presentations to Life,” a mini workshop presented by Graceworks.

Meet: Megan Laughlin, Kean University Student Chapter President Anyone who attended ASID NJ’s February Chapter meeting at Porcelanosa had the opportunity to be charmed by Megan Laughlin, the new president of Kean University’s ASID Student Chapter. Megan bravely volunteered to put her speaking skills to the test in an impromptu presentation exercise conducted by Carol Doscher of Graceworks. Megan got words of praise from Carol and resounding applause from the audience.

Although Megan has always been interested in art, she graduated from a high school that didn’t have an art program. So when she set her sights on Kean University, she had to develop a portfolio of work that would grant her admission. She matriculated with an undeclared major in Spring 2014 before switching to the interior design program in the fall. “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, but I love it,” declared Megan. Megan was one of a small group of design students who developed a color palette for two dorms on the Kean University campus in Wenzhou, China. With everything approved, Megan and her fellow students are eagerly awaiting pictures of the final results.

Megan’s involvement with ASID began this past fall when she participated in Real World Design Week. Megan spent her day with Hope Sferra, Allied ASID. The day began in Hope’s office in New Jersey, then proceeded to an installation on New York’s Upper East Side, followed by a trip to the D&D Building, where Megan helped Hope pick colors and fabrics. “It was such a great opportunity,” says Megan, “and I took full advantage of it, bombarding Hope with lots of questions!”

Not long after Megan’s RWDW day, Professor Linda O’Shea asked Megan if she would be interested in taking on the presidency of Kean’s ASID Student Chapter. “I jumped at the chance,” she says. “I want to bring the ASID name back onto campus and create a sense of unity by starting various clubs and getting designers in to speak, things that would be beneficial for myself and the other interior design students.”

“I’m also excited for the ASID Student Career Day, which will be here on our home turf in March . . . and about participating in the ASIdeas trade show in April.” Kean University, as well as other ASID Student Chapters, will be having booths at the trade show.

When Megan isn’t involved in school and ASID activities, you might just run into her at an art museum. “I love to paint and draw. When I’m not doing that myself, I enjoy seeing what others do.” She also plays the piano and sings.

Megan’s post-graduation goals are to work in a design firm for a few years and then branch out into either commercial store design or set design.
