Where will you be on July 18th? I hope you will consider joining me in Boston at Celebration, an event that is part of ASID’s annual Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC). We are celebrating our 40th anniversary, “40 Years, One Voice.” The beautiful venue is at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which is one of the largest art museums in the world. Come see art, enjoy drinks and appetizers during the opening red carpet reception. After the reception we move into the museum's main courtyard for an elegant dinner and awards show. Our dedicated, hard working peers, including those who have been elected to the College of Fellows (FASID), will be recognized during the evening’s event. Being named a Fellow is the Society’s highest honor. It is bestowed on professional members who have made notable and outstanding contributions to the profession not only through their work but also through their demonstrated commitment to ASID and to the interior design industry. Less than 1 percent of the ASID membership have the honor of using the FASID appellation. In addition to the Celebration gala, you will also have the opportunity to attend The State of the Society address, which takes place on Saturday, July 18th from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm at the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center in Boston. This is an excellent place to learn firsthand what is coming out of National and get the chance to voice an opinion. Without sounding like a broken record I really want to encourage our members to attend these wonderful events. It is a short drive and will really re-energize you about your membership again. I promise! As chapter president, I have had discussions with many of you about the value of your membership. To be honest about it, before I began to volunteer for the chapter, I rarely went to our own chapter’s website, let alone visited the website of our national organization. But I’ve now discovered that there are many membership benefits to be found on the national website. Visit www.asg.org, click on the Education tab, click on Online Learning, and then click on Business Strategy Courses. From these courses, you will learn about setting your intentions, attracting clients, managing clients and managing your practice. Who will benefit from this series? Designers who need a refresher or guidance for their team, designers who want to respond to rapid changes in the marketplace, designers who want to take their success to the next level, and also the designer who is starting a new business. There are many benefits to taking this course series. You will fulfill half your 2015 CEU requirements and complete an actionable business plan. You will be able to take them at a pace that works for you, concentrating on the parts of the series that best fit your needs.

Student Representative Kathleen Ward, Student ASID (732) 682-4265 kward37@comcast.net

Other benefits of our membership include "The ASID Advantage." As part of a vast network of resources that ASID provides to its members, the Society offers exclusive discounts on products and services. On the ASID website, you'll find contract forms, trade pricing information and discounts for products and services to support your business. ASID also offers custom insurance programs exclusively for Society members.

Advisor/Past President Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID (732) 263-1300 donna@blueheron-designs.com

Take advantage of some these great offerings; these “hidden” benefits greatly increase the value of your membership. And thank you to each and every one of you for your very valuable membership. It has made my term as your president an ongoing honor!

The promotion of resilience will improve the economic competitiveness of the United States. Disasters are expensive to respond to, but much of the destruction can be prevented with cost-effective mitigation ffeeatures and advanced planning. Our practices must continue to change, and we commit ourselves to the creation of new practices in order to break the cycle of destruction and rebuilding. Together, our organizations are committed to build a more resilient ent ffuuture.

CHAPTER NEWS

ASID CEU Chapter Race Challenge By Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID YOU make a difference - Professional, Allied, Associate and Educator members. National has challenged chapters to encourage their membership to become as CEU compliant as possible between March 1st and October 31st, by giving back to the chapters. Have you met your CEU requirements (ten hours over two years or 1.0 credits, ending 12/31/2015)? Need CEUs? Have an IDCEC-approved CEU you'd like to present to the membership? Your chapter is being challenged to get as many members as possible CEU “compliant.” If we (the ASID NJ Chapter) get nearly 85% of our members compliant, WE WIN $1000! If we get the highest percentage of members compliant (out of all 48 chapters), WE WIN $1500! Sweet deal for doing what we already need to do! Go team JERSEY (currently ranked at #14 with 12% compliant)! Reminder: DESIGNERS - your Industry Partners host CEUs at their locations to help you meet your CEU requirements. Please support your IPs, and yourself, by attending these events when you can. INDUSTRY PARTNERS - you and your jobbers have knowledge and expertise! Share it in an IDCEC-approved CEU. Don't know how, or need space to host? Contact our Chapter Administrator (732-787-5981 or administrator@asidnj.org) for directions and/or guidance. A reprint of the information from ASID National is listed below:

• The first week of every month a report will be sent to the chapter administrators** outlining the current rank of all chapters.**If a chapter does not have an admin, a secondary contact will need to be identified (President, other chapter board member, etc.) • A chapter is not required to plan or host a CEU event for the purpose of the Race; they are asked to help inform members about the CEU requirements and ways to meet those requirements. This monthly report will help track each chapter’s success towards full compliance and the chapter with the highest percentage at the end of the Race will win! The chapter who is in the lead will be announced the first week of November, 2015. The race does not go until the end of the two-year reporting period (ending on December 31, 2015) out of respect for the upcoming holiday season. Any CEU credits earned after October 31 will still be counted towards personal requirements, but not towards the Race. Reporting • Official cumulative data will be retrieved from the IDCEC database on or around the first of each month by ASID staff. ASID members can access their personal record at any time by logging into www.idcec.org and checking their transcript for the most accurate credit count. • Data will reflect CEUs taken from 1/1/2014 – the previous month, all data is cumulative for the reporting period. • The report will include two tabs: an overall ranking of chapters and a complete list of the members within the chapter who have taken CEU credits. • In order for a member to count towards their chapter’s percentage, they need to have already completed the 1.0 CEU credits (10 hours). If only a portion of the 1.0 CEUs are completed, this will not count towards the chapter race.

How the Chapter Race Works Time Period: March 1, 2015- October 31, 2015 Goals: To provide an exciting way to get chapters involved with the ASID mandated CEU requirements for the current reporting period. All eligible designer members will contribute towards their chapter’s total through a race to have the highest percentage of members in compliance. Rules of Engagement: • Each eligible practitioner member is required to take 1.0 CEU credits (10 hours) for the reporting period of 1/1/2014 – 12/31/2015. Members not in compliance of this requirement are subject to auditing and potential termination of membership as stated in the ASID bylaws.* • *Member CEU requirement is stated in the ASID bylaws under A: Society Membership, Article V: Membership Classifications, Section 5 – Termination of Membership: 3. Failure to Comply with CEU requirements • Chapter leaders are advocates for this and promote the value of continuing education for all interior designers. It is our responsibility to be informed on current issues, trends and codes which effect the practice of design. • This competition is to reward the chapter who actively promotes this message to their members through regular communication and CEUapproved events.

The formula which is used will: • Pull the monthly ASID Membership Report and calculate the eligible members for each chapter (this is subject to change each month). • Sort the list of eligible members who have taken 1.0 CEUs (10 hours) or more. • Divide this amount from the total eligible number to get a percentage of completion for the chapter (out of 100%). • The percentage will increase each month as more members reach their full compliance. Who Is Eligible: • All 48 ASID Professional Chapters • Practitioner Members (Professional, Allied, Associate, Educator) who joined ASID before May 31, 2014. *Members who joined after this date have prorated CEU requirements and do not need the full 1.0/10 hours. Prize: The chapter who gets their eligible membership closest to 100% compliance will win $1000! If the percentage of the chapter’s compliance is over 85% and they are in first place among all chapters, then they will be eligible to win $1500. The competition ends on November 1, 2015. Notice of the winning chapter will be given prior to November 30, 2015. The $1000 or $1500 prize money must be used towards hosting a CEU- approved chapter event. This money can be used towards any event logistics (speaker/ rental fees, marketing, food/beverage costs, etc.)

Habitat Bergen 5K Race to Build On April 11, our chapter sponsored and participated in the Habitat Bergen 5K Race to Build. It was our first year collaborating with them and it was a great success. We were not only able to support Habitat by helping them raise money, but we were also able to use this as an opportunity to raise public awareness of the ASID brand. With an ASID NJ table at the event, we spoke to many participants about the benefits of working with a professional designer and we got some follow-up coverage via social media. Each year we build upon the last year, making the each new collaboration better than the last one.

Committee Reports Marketing Spruce It Up By Hope Sferra, Allied ASID, CID, Director, Spruce It Up Program Our annual Spruce It Up program will run this fall from October 1-31. For the second year, we have decided to partner with NJ Habitat for Humanity. Advertising and promotion will take place through both organizations and the public will have the opportunity to contact us at the Chapter office to set up an appointment for a consultation with one our chapter’s participating designers. The fee for a one-hour consultation is $150 and a two-hour consultation is $300. The check is written by the homeowner to the Habitat affiliate of their choice (there are 25 in the state). The designer collects the check AT THE TIME OF THE CONSULTATION, (there is NEVER any billing). The designer mails the check to Hope Sferra, the director of the program. We need YOUR help. The program cannot be a success without the volunteer efforts of ASID NJ designers. In a very short time, you will be contacted via a public relations email and the President's Message and you will be asked to sign up. In the meantime, if you would like to contact the Director of the Spruce It Up Program early and be added to the list of participating designers, you are encouraged to do so. Simply email Hope Sferra at hope@hopesferrainteriors.com and provide the following: Your name Your address Your work telephone no. Your cell telephone no. Counties you are willing to drive to. The number of consultations you are willing to complete Please note: This most is most definitely a public awareness program. It is an opportunity for our organization to highlight the professionalism that our highly educated, experienced, and credentialed members "bring to the table." It is not a project creator. Many homeowners are intrigued and curious about the process of utilizing an interior designer and willing to give it a go for such a good cause, but the Spruce It Up program does not guarantee actual work. In some instances it has translated into projects, but our marketing committee wants to be clear that the incentive must be to help your chapter shine. If you have any questions, or wish to sign up, please email: Hope@hopesferrainteriors.com.

Community Service by Brooke Morales, Allied ASID Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children between the ages of 2-1/2 and 18 who have been diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Of the hundreds of wishes that Make-A-Wish New Jersey grants each year, about a dozen children request a room makeover. STUDENT NEWS keeps him or her home from school, or a den or playroom that they want as a fun place uniquely their own. In late April, we sent out a call to our members to fill two more immediate requests. We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of designers willing to help! We are in the process of filling these requests and look forward to making more wishes come true. Our involvement with Make-A-Wish New Jersey has been a wonderful success! In the previous issue of NJ Inspire, we profiled three Make-A-Wish projects that happened thanks to the efforts of Pat Valentine Ziv, ASID, Heather McManus, Associate ASID and Iris Houlihan, Student ASID. Our fourth successful Make-A-Wish makeover by ASID designer Cozette Brown, Allied ASID gives beautiful new bedroom and art space for a child’s Cape Cod 2nd floor bedroom. Together with her family and other MAW volunteers, Cozette was able to redesign Natalie’s awkwardly shaped room into a blue oasis inspired by her own caterpillar photo canvas for her to paint and draw with her friends and within quick reach of some snacks in her new mini fridge. MAW volunteers assisted in painting the new blue room and Cozette was able to surprise Natalie with all new furniture thanks to Mike Kaplan of Palisade Furniture in Englewood. Cozette’s contractor Jerry Koenig even got involved and provided new closet doors, assisted with carpentry and finishing off the closets. “The experience was terrific and truly an honor and privilege for me; combining my passion for design with a love for helping others,” says Cozette. If you are interested in donating your time to assist in a child’s makeover wish, please contact us at communityservice@asidnj.com.

so much of ASID's power and creative talent in one place. My predecessors had it right when they started this tradition!

It was a great year to be at ASIdeas. This year's trade show attracted approximately 300 designer and student attendees. They all came to see what's new from familiar favorites and to open doors to new ideas and resources that will bring their creative visions to life . . . . . . and ASIdeas exhibitors did not disappoint! Expanded Product and Services Mix From trusted multi-national resources to local artisans, the exhibitor floor was an exciting and bustling mix of opportunities. Whether you want to select it, customize it, or design it from scratch, there was someone there to help. A Beloved Tradition Returns What an awesome scene it was at our keynote luncheon with 500 in attendance--members plus guest designers and vendors. It was inspiring to see

Internationally-Recognized Design Thought Leaders Our speakers were excited to reach this powerful audience. Susan Szenasy highlighted the immense power we have to impact the world around us, and Michela O'Connor-Abrams (who is business-savvy personified!) presented facts and guidance for increasing our business potential with the future design-consumer. New Visions and Energy Give a Glimpse of Great Things to Come How could you miss the impact of our next gen of pros on this event!? From the giant graffiti banner to the student booths and Mondrianinspired dry erase "Wink Walls," our student members exhibited their creative talent and collaboration skills. NATIONAL NEWS

An Excerpt on "RESILIENCY" paraphrased from National: by Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID, IP

The competition demonstrated that a high performance, energy-efficient suite can also be aesthetically pleasing and enhance guest experience.

We start with *DEFINITIONS* like "Sustainability". Green design is design that goes beyond being just efficient, attractive, on time and on budget. It is a design that cares about how such goals are achieved, and about its’ effect on people and on the environment. An environmentally responsible professional makes a commitment to constantly try to find ways to diminish design's impact on the world around us. It is also a smart way of doing business. Sustainable design is the fastest growing segment of our industry.

The winning design came from the team of destination design firm WATG and IDEO, a design and innovation consulting company. It was built as a model guest room to be presented as an educational display for the design industry, hotel owners, and corporate travel executives. The Sustainable Suite was unveiled at the HDExpo in Las Vegas, NV in May 2010. Visit ASID.org/content/sustainable-design for links on the concepts and features, and future Competition guidelines.

STUDENT NEWS

Career Day On Saturday, March 7, approximately 60 students attended our chapter’s annual Career Day, which was held at Kean University. In addition to a large contingent from Kean, we had students from Brookdale College, NJIT, Berkeley College, and County College of Morris, plus a student from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and from Design Ecademy UK. Keynote speaker D. Luke Iorio, president and CEO of IPEC and a professional career coach, shared tips and advice on following the right career path. After lunch, students had the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions on a variety of career-building topics. The day also included the chance to tour Kean's Green Lane Building and an abundance of networking opportunities.

STUDENT NEWS

Real World Design Week Real World Design Week is a national mentoring program that offers interior design students unparalleled hands-on and online learning experiences. This rewarding program has created lasting relationships, connecting students with professionals making a difference in the design industry. ASID members (designers and IPs) participate by offering to mentor a student for a day. Interior design students connect with professionals and tour their offices, listen in on client meetings and develop a better understanding of what the industry looks like on a daily basis.

All of these wonderful experiences have led me to apply for the position of ASID NJ Student Representative to the Board where I hope to further my participation with ASID and grow within the design industry. I am truly thankful for ASID, RWDW, and Michael Mariotti for presenting me with these life changing opportunities. I would highly recommend all students to make time for any mentoring opportunity as nothing beats real world experience and creating lifelong connections.
