Dear Members, As the seasons begin to change from summer to fall so does the leadership of our great and very dynamic chapter. It makes me reflect back on my time as a member. I remember when I was interviewed in New York many years ago to join ASID as a student member. Having been part of the NY Metro Chapter for many years, and after a push from a few of New Jersey’s past presidents, I decided to do a dual membership. I saw something in this chapter that was special, a connection that made me want to get more involved . . . and it has been such a great experience. I have met and bonded with so many of you and it has helped me to grow as a businessman. As I begin the presidency of our chapter, I thank you for your votes of confidence and I look forward to the challenge of leading us to the future. As we start a new year, whether it is the presidency or working on a committee, we are all volunteering our time. So I present you with a challenge: to get involved and to let your voice be heard! While it is good to hear feedback from many of our peers that business is improving, this does not mean that it will be business like it was in the past. The economy has changed the way many of us work. This is also true for the professional organizations that we belong to. This year’s Strategic Plan will guide the chapter forward and expand our presence in new areas and arenas so that the public and industry will see that ASID NJ consists of highly skilled, ethical commercial and residential design professionals. We will get very active with the schools and help the students understand the importance of ASID NJ and how it is the go-to source for professional development and the place to help get their feet wet in our industry. Too often I have heard, “What value do I get for the money I spend on dues?” I am excited to say that there is so much value through our chapter on both a local and national level. Preparing for the presidency, I have learned about so many benefits and one of my goals is to make sure that you are all aware of them, too. The many tools that are available to us will help us grow our businesses and advance our practices. I want to thank Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID, for leading our chapter this past year and to help prepare me for the challenges ahead as we work to keep our members happy and proud to be part of this great organization. In the upcoming pages you will get to meet the board. I want to thank those board members who are continuing on for all their hard work and efforts: Jana Manning, ASID, our new President-elect; Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID, our Communications Director; Ginny Zonfrilli, Allied ASID, our Membership Director; and Brooke Morales, IP, our At-large Board Member. Introducing our incoming Board of Directors members: Sheree Goodman, Allied ASID, our new Financial Director and Anna Maria Mannarino, Allied ASID, our new Professional Development Director. Meet Our Board Members Up Close Board of Directors 2014-2015 PRESIDENT Michael M. Mariotti, ASID, CID Michael Mariotti Interior Design (201) 384-1294 michaelasid@michaelmariotti.com Assisted by a staff of three, I am personally responsible for each project's design vision. After meeting with clients to understand their needs and preferences, I develop the interior, and often exterior, concepts. I apply my “classic style with a modern twist” to balance functionality and timelessness. My mission for the chapter is to increase awareness of ASID state-wide. Introducing more people to the society will help both for networking possibilities and vendor collaboration. The American Society of Interior Designers has a wealth of information and opportunities and more designers need to be aware of the benefits of joining and staying active. My personal interests include gardening, cycling, entertaining and travel.

DEPARTMENT NEWS FINANCIAL DIRECTOR Sheree Goodman, Allied ASID Sheree Goodman Design Inc. (201) 848-5061 www.ShereeGoodmanDesign.com sgidesign@optonline.net My interior design practice specializes in both residential and commercial spaces. By my own admission, I'm an accidental interior designer. Twelve years ago, I took leave of a beloved career as an art director in publishing to care for a sick family member. When I couldn't take it anymore and needed solace, I took a class in perspective drawing and rendering. Three-and-ahalf years later, I had a degree in interior design. Proof positive that the only way to get out of hell is to draw or paint your way out. My mission for the chapter is to position ASID as a great resource that continuously adds value for the professional, allied, associate, student and Industry Partners' memberships and continuously enhances the success of all our businesses. I have been married to the love of my life for 22 years. We have a 20-yearold daughter and an 18-year-old son.

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID Tracethemark, Owner/Operator New Jersey Decorating Exchange, Director, Wholesale Division (551) 206-8139 tracethemark@gmail.com As Director of the Wholesale Division of the NJ Decorating Exchange, I provide product information and service to interior designers, organize events and CEUs, and market our division to further grow our trade business. As an interior designer, I provide consultation services to residential and commercial prospects with a focus on space planning and lighting. In addition, I teach interior design and related fields at various educational institutions. My mission for the chapter: Through recognition of and compassion for volunteer efforts, open communication across all venues (Designer/ Industry Partner/Student) within the chapter and with related organizations, it is my intention to promote and solidify the efforts of the Society and its members.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR Anna Maria Mannarino, Allied ASID Mannarino Designs, Inc. (732) 741-1444 mannarinodesigns@comcast.net Mannarino Designs, Inc. is a full-service Interior Design & Build and Event Design & Production company, first established in 1996. Working with both residential and commercial clients, our interior projects span the simple refurbishing of small spaces to complete renovations and new construction. And, our event productions range from intimate beach weddings to museum galas that raise money for important causes. I thoroughly enjoy the whole creative design process…from the initial concept to final completion. I believe that good design begins with a conversation and understanding of the client. It is unbelievably gratifying to help someone

realize their vision by paying attention to every detail that goes into transforming a space. When I’m not designing spaces and events, I express my creativity and passion through music, in my other life as a jazz singer. The underlying goal for all of my work – be it design, events or music - is to create one-ofa-kind productions that captivate my clients and my audience. In return, I feel very blessed to be able to do what I love every single day. I am looking forward to working together with the Board to further promote the value of ASID to the public; to develop new strategies for building relationships within our chapter and bridge new ones in the industry; and to increase our community service efforts, by giving even more back than we have in the past.

AT-LARGE BOARD MEMBER Brooke Morales, Allied ASID, LEED AP ID+C, IP Rep for Quartz Masters (214) 335-3061 brooke@quartzmasters.com Brooke is the Northern NJ representative for QuartzMaster LLC, manufacturer of engineered quartz solid surface countertop material based in Bayonne NJ. Brooke’s experience also includes sourcing and selecting sustainable interior materials for residential or commercial specifications. She is a LEED Accredited Professional in Interior Design and Construction (LEED AP ID+C) and has consulted on retail, commercial and residential LEED building projects. Her firm, Beaux Art Green, strives to educate the industry and public whenever possible to encourage environmentally friendly design choices. “I’d love to assist the chapter as we grow membership and begin to offer activities and education for a younger emerging designer demographic. Additionally, I am interested in expanding our community involvement through marketing and community service.”

We provide distinctive design solutions for virtually every room in their homes that truly embody the art of fine living. The result: magnificent, one-of-a-kind home, work, and play settings that our clients will live in and love. My mission for the chapter: As Director of Membership my focus is to establish a sense of welcome and involvement to potential and existing members, promote the benefits ASID has to offer both on a local and national level and increase ASID involvement with our educational interior design institutions. Our message should extend to students currently enrolled in an interior design program, emerging professionals as well as active design professionals. decided to leave a long-time career in Education to pursue my creative passions in the field of interior design. I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I am actively involved in local charity work and currently devote time as president of our local Board of Education.

PARLIAMENTARIAN Sharon L. Sherman, ASID, CID Thyme & Place Design, LLC (201) 847-1400 sherman@thymeandplacedesign.com My Wyckoff-based design firm, Thyme & Place Design, is a boutique-style interior design studio specializing in kitchens, baths and custom millwork. Our mantra is “Unparalleled Design Excellence.” My mission for the chapter: To position ourselves as an inclusive chapter of design experts who can share the value of interior design and of membership in an outstanding association like ASID. With all of our knowledge and experience, we are a design community that can provide priceless services to our students, emerging professionals and the general public in all sectors of interior design. On the personal side, I am married for 22 years to a great guy, and have a freshman and senior in college, who are both national level competitive swimmers. I play on an interclub paddle tennis and coach swimming when not working or volunteering.

ADVISOR/PAST PRESIDENT Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID, CAPS Blue Heron Designs Inc. (732) 263-1300 donna@blueheron-designs.com Founded in 1996, my interior design company, Blue Heron Designs Inc., creates space and design solutions for the 50+ homeowner's evolving lifestyle needs. My interest in universal design and aging-in-place began in design school and led to an introduction to Christopher and Dana Reeve, who allowed me to use their house plans for a senior-year project. A year later I established my business. An Allied Member of ASID since 2000, I’ve served as a STEP chair, Marketing Committee member, Co-Chair of the Marketing Committee, and Membership Director. Believing strongly in the strength of the ASID brand, my mission for the chapter is to make the public more aware of the rigorous standards and ethics established for and followed by each ASID member, whether they are Student, Emerging, Associate, Allied, Professional or Industry Partner. My goals include increasing member participation in chapter activities by focusing on rewarding, inclusive and fun ways to get involved.

NATIONAL NEWS

Highlights from CLC by Michael Mariotti, ASID June was the annual Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC). This conference, which was held in Los Angeles in conjunction with Dwell on Design, trains the board to be better prepared for the roles that we have assumed. It also gives us the opportunity to meet the other chapters and learn what they are doing and find out about their strengths and weakness. This exposure is a valuable opportunity to learn more about how to improve our chapter. In the past, only the incoming president and the president-elect went to CLC for this training. But I am happy to report that the past two years, National has opened this training up to the entire board. It is this advanced training that will help the chapter and board function better and be better able to respond to the needs of our members. National has heard from and listened to the chapters and will help provide us with the tools we need to move forward. In an ever-changing marketplace where membership in professional organizations is shrinking, we have to address this reality head on. This was big part of the focus for this year’s CLC—and the challenge for our chapters. It is an excellent opportunity for all of us to take that challenge and get more involved. This endeavor will make us better leaders and better business people. This year the

conference spent time on the changing demographics and how we need to address this to keep our chapter vital and growing. Also, a good part of our time was spent on Strategic Planning for the chapter, which is an invaluable procedure for the ongoing success of our chapter. As I sat in on these sessions, it became evident that we were learning things we could implement to achieve

success in both our chapters and our businesses . . . acquiring this type of knowledge is yet another reason for chapter members to get involved in leadership roles. The conference concluded with the annual Design Awards Gala, which was held at Paramount Studios. This Hollywood event was exciting to attend. Recognizing our members for their extraordinary design work was the perfect celebratory ending for CLC.

Through an ASID NJ Chapter Program meeting, NJDX (David Greenberg) and I formally met. Through my volunteering with ASID NJ Chapter, we forged a partnership to build NJDX's Trade Division business. When we first started, there was much debate about ASID designers working with a retail establishment. We have worked hard to not only build the trade division, but also to establish criteria for those wanting to obtain trade pricing from us. We are happy to share that our trade division (called "Design To The Max") has grown 800% since that time, and is a thriving part of our business. We work with interior designers and decorators all along the East coast. In addition to meeting the demands of interior designers at ALL levels, we have also networked with many of our existing vendors to further expand our product offerings and our (staff ) knowledge. It’s been a windy road, fraught with many GREAT lessons, and blessed with MANY great relationships with the trade. It is our honor to serve the trade with fabric, trim, wallpaper, furniture, accessories, blinds, custom drapery, drapery hardware, flooring (rugs and carpeting), and upholstery. We look forward to the opportunity to be of service.

PETER RYMWID PHOTOGRAPHY

Peter Rymwid, born in Warsaw, Poland to an old Polish gentry family, was directed towards recognizing and appreciating the arts starting early in his life. His teenage years were spent on touring the most prestigious art institutions in Europe, and studying international painting and sculpture. However, his true contact with art took place in Poland while analyzing

paintings and sculptures of his cousin, a recognized Polish sculptor, and later when assisting his uncle, also a sculptor, in his studio in Germany. Upon his arrival in the U.S., Peter extended his interest in art by studying computer science and graphics at NJIT in Newark, N.J., and photography at the School of Visual Arts in N.Y. In 1986, as a consequence of his collaboration with an international group of architects and interior designers in New York, Peter began photographing interiors and architecture. He photographs ancient, traditional or contemporary interiors with a goal to enhance its pictorial representation, by giving them life and dramatic value. He achieves such results by judicious use of light and colors and a dynamic sense of spatial balance. Peter’s work can be seen in major magazines in the U.S. and Europe, like European Vogue or American Architectural Digest, Florida Design, Interior Design, New York Spaces and Design NJ magazine. His clients include architects, builders, interior designers, and banks in the United States as well as overseas. Peter Rymwid is a member of the IPASID and New Jersey Association of Professional Photographers.

But what seperates us from our competition is that we do not stop there. We strive to add value to the entire sales process. Our state-approved “University,” Warshauer Tech, gives contractors the opportunity to earn valuable continuing education credits – and we are the only N.J. Electrical Distributor who can make that claim! We also pride ourselves as being a true partner with our customers as our Builder Group, Generator Department, The Lighting Design Center, and the Automation & Security Department all provide a substantial amount of business leads that we pass on to our true business partners.

September 2013 Meeting Our September meeting at the Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands marked the official “changing of the guard” when outgoing President Sharon L. Sherman, ASID, passed the gavel to incoming President Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID. Guest speaker was Katherine Nannizzzi, business developer, HOUZZ. Mary Sferra, ASID, was honored with our Chapter Medalist Award.

October 2013 Meeting Our October meeting, held at Kean University, featured Metropolis editor Susan Szenasy and followed the more casual format of James Lipton’s “Inside the Actor’s Studio” with Suzan Globus, FASID, assuming Mr. Lipton’s role. Attendance was a great mix of designers, IPs and students.

November 2013 Meeting The evening centered around a tour of the LEED silver Historic Preservation at Hillside Square in Montclair. February 2014 Meeting “Light Talk: A Conversation on Dynamic LED Lighting and Controls” at Traxon Technologies included a tour of the facilities and presentations that explored lighting topics crucial to the successful specification of a design.

STUDENT NEWS

Real World Design Week is Coming! November 2-8, 2014 Real World Design Week is ASID’s annual national mentoring program. It offers both hands-on and online learning experiences to introduce students to the real world of interior design. During Real World Design Week, ASID student members will pair up with an ASID designer or Industry Partner

I asked Tamyika to come with questions she had about the design business and, over lunch, we took the opportunity to address them. Most of her questions concerned the relationship between designer and client. We talked about things like the role of subcontractors, the value of participating in an internship program or getting a part-time job with a designer while still in school, and the importance of getting out and about to places like the New York Design Center and shows like the New York International Gift Fair, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, and the Architectural Digest show, not only to see new merchandise, but also to make invaluable business contacts.

We spent the afternoon back in my office, where we explored the more mundane parts of the business—placing orders, following up with both clients and vendors, and more.

For me, this wasn’t just a one-day commitment. I encouraged Tamyika to continue to be active as a student member of the ASID New Jersey chapter and to contact me with any questions she may have on her journey to become a professional interior designer.

READING CORNER

Five Business Books Secretly Written for Interior Designers by Jay Johnson This non-traditional reading list for designers will have you ready for anything thrown your way. Let's compare your diet to your reading habits. Is what you read well balanced, too? We can make a great case for reading the latest shelter magazines and designer coffee table books, and reaching into the past for inspirational guides to all facets of design—but if that's all you're reading, it's akin to pigging out on ice cream all the time. My design partner Irwin Weiner and I came up with a non-traditional reading list of business books that we think were secretly written for our industry. They share these traits: keen insights into the kind of behaviors we deal with daily, helpful tips for running and maintaining a successful business while keeping your creative edge and a wicked sense of humor. 1. Damn Good Advice (for people with talent!) Advertising legend George Lois, considered by some to be the model for the Don Draper character in “Mad Men,” talks in short one- and two-page nuggets of business advice that even the busiest interior designer can digest. I call this a "popcorn book," because you can delicately pick out one nugget of advice at a time or consume the whole tub in one reading. Lois' sense of humor is razor-sharp, and this is a stimulating read. The goal of the book is to "unleash your Creative Potential." Typical quote: "There are only four types of person you can be. Identify yourself: 1. Very bright, Industrious (You're perfect.). 2. Very bright, Lazy (A damn shame.). 3. Stupid, Lazy (You'll just sit on your ass, so you're a wash.). 4. Stupid, Industrious (Oh, oh, you're dangerous.). If you're a number 1 or a 2, you'll get a lot out of this book. If you're a number 3 or 4, why are you reading this book?" 2. UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging Author Scott Stratten is an expert in viral and social media, music marketing, sales training and "authentic" marketing. One of his stories is about how a carpet cleaning man at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas stopped what he was doing, looked him directly in the eye, gave him a friendly, natural smile, and welcomed him to the Wynn; that honest connection showed Stratten that the Wynn had more than any other hotel on the Vegas Strip, even though all the mega-hotels have basically the same amenities. The personal greeting was what made him choose to stay there. Stratten's takeaway message for designers is to avoid marketing to potential clients in ways we hate being marketed to ourselves (cold calls, ads, flyers, etc.). His book will help to position yourself as a trusted expert in front of your potential market of decorating clients so that when they need to hire someone, they'll choose you.

3. Fascinate: Your 7 Triggers to Persuasion and Captivation Sally Hogshead, an advertising brand executive, maps out seven ways to get people to be fascinated with you enough to hire you. This slim volume is a quick read, but the ideas it presents will be like bottle rockets going off in your head for days. The triggers themselves are fascinating: lust, mystique, alarm, prestige, power, vice and trust. Each has to do with how to fascinate clients and how to sell your clients on being fascinating to others by getting the kind of interiors only you can help them create. One could have some devilish fun knowing what triggers to pull with others—and knowing that we all respond to these triggers all the time, without realizing it. 4. Unthink: Rediscover Your Creative Genius First, how did Erik Wahl, a graffiti artist, become a leader in business thinking? Seems farfetched, but we know that creative ideas and good business sense must co-exist—unless you'd like to work pro bono. The book helps you push beyond traditional thought patterns and being logical all the time. Wahl says, "Our greatest personal potential is reached when unbridled imagination is applied with critical competence and when business acumen is embodied with artistic finesse." This book could change the way you organize your office, schedule, and patterns with clients. It will challenge you to live life in a more creative, childlike way. 5. Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most Every interior designer will recognize some of the situations covered in this practical guide written by the team behind the Harvard Negotiation Project. Their goal is to help readers handle tough conversations "with less stress and more success." Personally, you can improve relationships with co-workers and spouses. Professionally, move clients you'd love to fire—but somehow never manage to handle effectively, once and for all—away from emotion and towards productive problem solving. So that's our short list of recommendations. We recommend reading recreationally, too: news, sports, literary fiction, science fiction, cookbooks, murder mysteries—anything that will make you a more juicy and interesting person. Clients want to relate to real people who have opinions and ideas and stories outside of our field, not design robots … or people who only eat ice cream. Broaden your horizons! What business books have you found useful to your design practice?
