I cannot believe that this will be my last President’s Message to you. It leaves me feeling both sad and accomplished at the same time. Sad because I have enjoyed this experience beyond my wildest expectations. Accomplished because I feel proud of the good things that the chapter has achieved during my term. I am very excited to pass the gavel to Jana Manning. Her energy and enthusiasm are infectious and she will continue to guide the chapter in a good and positive direction. Get the name out there! One of my goals this year was to get more recognition for the name "ASID." Remember the ad campaign for Levolor blinds? ''Lift a Levolor blind. And you'll find a Levolor name.'' No, I am not thinking we could accomplish this type of name recognition for the Society in just one term but participating in new opportunities certainly made some new positive impressions. We took small steps that reaped good rewards. One step was working on the VIP lounge at the Atlantic Builders Convention in return for a free ASID booth. We reached many end users and builders and were able to give out information and educate both alike Chapter President Michael Mariotti, about the benefits of working with a professional ASID ASID being interviewed at the designer. Another was participating as a sponsor for the Atlantic Builders Convention Habitat for Humanity Bergen 5K Race to Build. Our logo appeared on their publicity materials and we got some good post-event social media coverage. And thanks to the efforts of many of our designers, we got our name out there through last fall’s Spruce It Up! program, which got great publicity and raised $13,000 for Habitat for Humanity. It’s also a program that is right in line with ASID’s 1% initiative, which encourages designers to devote 1% of their time to pro bono service. Get started on your 1% by volunteering to participate in this year’s Spruce It Up program. See page 18 for details on how to get involved. Chapter President Michael Mariotti, ASID with Jacey Raimondo, Executive Director, Habitat for A highlight of my year was the opportunity to Humanity-Bergen County visit the schools and get to know our student members. As my term ends, we now have seven student chapters in New Jersey! If there is a last thought that I would like to leave you with is to "get involved!" I know I have sung this song many times this past year, but we all pay lots of dollars to be members. One of the ways to get more value for our membership is to get off the sidelines and participate in the game! I’m not suggesting that you become chapter president (although I recommend it!) but consider joining a committee. You can help more than you may realize without a major time commitment. My involvement with ASID has truly made me a more effective business person. I urge you to do the same and see what can happen. Thank you for entrusting me to lead our dynamic chapter this past term. Michael Mariotti, ASID, CID President, ASID NJ Chapter 2014-2015

VOL III • 2015 | NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
As I write this, the new chill in the air is signaling a transition in more than just the seasons. For me, October 1 marks the start of my new role as president of this awesome chapter. I take on this position at the same time as an amazing new group joins the current Board of Directors. In the world of ASID, a consensus-driven organization, this board will be working closely together to make the best possible decisions on behalf of all the NJ Chapter members. Preparing for our new roles, the incoming board and committee members have been hard at work studying your responses to May’s member survey and setting plans to deliver a great ASID NJ year according to your replies. This year we unite with all the other ASID chapters around the country to challenge our designers to showcase design’s ability to impact the human experience. Through our IPs and events, we plan to deliver product, knowledge, and inspiration to keep you at the top of this profession, and we look forward to ASID NJ continuing to turn out great work that exemplifies . . . Design’s Impact on the Human Experience To get started, join us for the ASID NJ bus trip to NEOCON EAST, Thursday, Oct. 29th. Stay on top of the latest commercial design innovations by joining the ASID NJ bus trip to Neocon East in Philadelphia, PA this year! Many of our IPs will be there and you’re sure to get inspired. Looking ahead to spring . . . On March 12, Skillpath will present an exciting day of “Effectiveness Training” curated by Karen Topjian, ASID and Judy Fosshage, FASID. Develop the habits, tools, and skills you need to be more effective at “getting it done” in work and life. Watch your email and the next issue of NJ Inspire for more about this exciting day dedicated to giving us more power over our work load and daily demands. And in between . . . there will be lots more going on. I look forward to seeing you all soon! Jana Manning, ASID, President, ASID NJ Chapter, 2015-2016

VOL III • 2015 | NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
Business Description: Manning Design Group is a full-service interior design firm enhancing the business of our clients by developing and communicating strong concepts through the built environment. It combines interior design with my 20-year background as a marketing and branding executive at Ralph Lauren, Givenchy, and other luxury brands, where I was responsible for introducing brands and opening stores worldwide. We specialize in restaurants and public spaces, as well as residences when they are good fit for what we do. What is your mission/goals for the chapter? The theme for the year at ASID is “Design’s Impact on the Human Experience. All chapters are united in advancing that message through our work and to the public. To that end, I hope to foster a spirit of camaraderie and adventure, keeping ASID NJ members at the forefront of this profession, representing the best of what interior design can deliver. On a personal note: Hobbies? Special interests? I enjoy endless amusement from pets, including cats and free-roaming peacocks that roost in the tree above our bedroom at our weekend getaway. Anything else you'd like to mention? Life presents challenges, so I work on gratitude every day. I'm really grateful for the commitment of so many ASID members who are always sharing their wisdom and encouragement. I'm also grateful to my husband who coaches me on cutting out unnecessary distractions, which is a constant challenge. I like to think I'm getting better at it! PRESIDENT-ELECT

Our event productions range from intimate beach weddings to museum galas that raise lots of money for important causes. What is your mission/goals for the chapter? Being an active member of our New Jersey Chapter since 2005, I have witnessed considerable ebbs and flows in membership numbers and levels of enthusiasm. As president-elect, I hope to inspire growth and active
DEPARTMENT NEWS participation by demonstrating the value of membership with events that exemplify networking benefits; tools that give our members sources and strategies to turn their passion for design into the finest businesses; programs that create a more symbiotic relationship among designers and industry partners; and working on thought-provoking projects that promote social responsibility, volunteerism and the power of giving back.

My first and foremost, order of business will be working on the ASID NJ DESIGN RESOURCE CONFERENCE AND EXPO (formerly known as Trade Show). Scheduled to take place in September 2016 and return to a more intimate venue, all of the programs and events of the day will be curated for the benefit of designers and Industry Partners. Stay tuned, for more details. Or, better yet . . . join the committee!! Anything else you'd like to mention? I thoroughly enjoy the whole creative design process. . . from the initial concept to final completion. I believe that good design begins with a conversation and understanding of the client. It is unbelievably gratifying to help someone realize their vision by paying attention to every detail that goes into transforming a space. On a personal note: Hobbies? Special interests? When I’m not designing spaces and events, I unwind by expressing my creativity and passion through music, as a jazz singer. FINANCIAL DIRECTOR

As the Financial Director for ASID NJ Chapter, my main goal will be maintaining and strengthening our chapter’s financial fiscal budget and forecasts. I would achieve this goal by utilizing my professional background in finance, and drawing on the strength of relationships formed over the years with ASID members. Specifically, I would set comprehensible, attainable objectives, facilitate direct communication between parties, and diligently track ongoing progress. In this manner, I hope to help ASID NJ Chapter sustain a track of smart financial responsibility, and further its wider success as an industry foundation.

(201) 848-5061 sgidesign@optonline.net Business Description: Sheree Goodman Design, Inc. specializes in both residential and commercial projects. By my own admission, I’m an accidental interior designer. Thirteen years ago, I took leave of a beloved career as an art director for a New York City publisher to care for my daughter who was ill. During this difficult time, I sought solace by taking a three-hour night class in perspective drawing and rendering. One class led to another and three-and-a-half years later, I had a degree in interior design. What is your mission/goals for the chapter? I became active in the chapter in 2008, working on the Program Committee and for the past 18 months, I have served as the Financial Director. My mission for my term as Professional Development Director is to strengthen our design community by elevating the quality of programs and events and creating a plethora of resources for our members.

NATIONAL NEWS
Highlights from Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC)
By Denise Jones, ASID
If you have really good eyes, you’ll recognize some ASID NJ Chapter faces on the far left in this photo of the crowd that attended CLC!
Here’s a funny story . . . I often consider myself kind of a wallflower, reluctant to be seen, just lurking behind the curtains making sure everything goes as planned. Like the All Great and Powerful OZ, there’s someone manning the levers and dials but nobody REALLY knows who. So, imagine my surprise when me, a self-proclaimed wallflower and reluctant volunteer, is elected to a position on the ASID NJ Board of Directors. How did THAT happen? Can we get a re-count? Well, wouldn’t you know that before the ink was dry I was whisked to Boston, Mass. to attend ASID National’s Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC). What was CLC anyway? Why did I need to go? I’m getting up at what time? . . . even on Saturday? AND I HAVE A ROOMMATE IN A ROOM WITH ONLY ONE KING BED! So the adventure began. From the moment my feet hit Boston pavement I was plugged in to the ASID National machine and boy was National pumped! It’s the organization’s 40th Anniversary, don’t you know? Some events were like being back at a high school pep rally. There were the annoyingly plucky cheerleaders and the polished varsity sports stars. It’s amazing how you can take the girl out of the rally but not the rally out of the girl! The energy was pulsing in the convention center as people crossed paths from every corner of our great country. CLC provided chapter leadership a unique opportunity to hear first-hand the initiatives of our national organization and to then broadcast that message to our members. Chapters learned about the launch of ASID Academy, a new online learning resource for continuing education and professional advancement. Guided by The Clinton Global Initiative (GCI), ASID Health and Wellness Protocols have been developed as key components to enhancing our industry expertise, allowing us to provide valuable knowledge and design skill when crafting space, so that it contributes to and enhances the health and well being of its occupants. New alliances were announced with Houzz, who welcomed ASID chapters to leverage their online presence and showcase the power of ASID

designers through a regional chapter profile and HOUZZ badge. Cosentino, an innovative International stone surface manufacturer, announced their continued showroom expansion across the United States, catering to the interior design industry. Their New Jersey flagship showroom will open October 15th in Fairfield. Individual chapter leaders benefitted from CEUs focused on their leadership positions, leadership style, state of the industry research, government and public affairs and the needs of emerging professionals and students. Other activities had leaders from across the nation share ideas and exchange contact information to become resources for one another throughout their term. I have to say, despite all the hustle bustle and fanfare, CLC was quite the rewarding experience. Although I call myself the reluctant volunteer, I now wonder . . . why so reluctant? Successful people get involved and strive to make a positive contribution. Do you know anyone who doesn’t want to be a success? I’m not reluctant about my desire for success, therefore I must not be a wallflower or reluctant about making a contribution. CLC was a gift that keeps on giving, fostering leadership, developing teamwork and demonstrating the benefit of motivating people to work collectively toward a common goal. These attributes not only help strengthen our local chapter but are the building blocks of creating a successful business overall. CLC provided free training for me to become a strong leader and build a thriving business. Forget the re-count, I’m in! Who wouldn’t want to volunteer! By the way, the king bed situation got figured out so no board member spooning was necessary, although I absolutely loved my roommate. If life gave us the King we would’ve built a Kingdom (right, Sheree?)! Also, I highly recommend train travel up our northeast coast--no traffic, comfortable seats and marvelous views along New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island coastlines. See you next year CLC! I’ll be the first to volunteer!

ASID Partnership with Houzz By Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID ASID has partnered with Houzz to increase public awareness on the impact and value of interior designers. The Impact of Design Showcase is a joint initiative to bring unparalleled visibility to the field of interior design. As ASID celebrates its first 40 years, members are encouraged to showcase what they believe the next 40 years of design will look like and how it will impact the human experience. All entrants will receive exposure to 35+ million people in the Houzz community, and the showcase winners will be awarded great prizes, like $1500 in photography services, a one-year ASID membership (if eligible), a free copy of the Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments publication, and one free ticket to a 2016 ASID National event of their choice (up to $195 value). To enter your work visit the ASID National website: • Upload images of your design project or add photos from your existing design projects on Houzz.
• Write a brief description sharing the details of your project and the impact your design will have on people’s lives. • Share your entry with your friends, family, and colleagues and encourage them to vote. The showcase ends at 12 PM PST on October 30, 2015. Submit your projects early. The earlier you enter, the more opportunities you have for people to vote for your project. Even if you don’t enter the showcase personally, you can still help move this important initiative forward by “liking” your favorite projects, or saving your favorite photos to your ideabooks on Houzz. Create a professional profile on Houzz in order to vote. Don’t forget to take advantage of the extensive benefits Houzz has set up for the entire ASID community. auction opened on July 13 and concluded at the end of Celebration. This year New Jersey was very active in the bidding. Our members had winning bids on two great events. A $1600 bid won a gathering at Christopher Hyland’s home. A $5800 bid won a week in Umbria, Italy for up to eight people, which works out to a mere $725 per person. How cool is that??? I want to thank our members for their support and for the $7400 that New Jersey contributed to the Foundation during the auction.

Spruce It Up! Get Involved Spruce It Up is a program developed and overseen by the Marketing Committee to: • raise public awareness of the ASID brand. • offer consumers personal insights into what a professional interior designer can help them achieve. • create community goodwill through partnerships with worthy charitable organizations. Spruce It Up runs from Oct. 1-31, 2015. WHO BENEFITS? All proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. In addition to helping our fellow New Jerseyans, this program also helps meet one of our vital core objectives: to raise public awareness about interior design and promote our designers' professionalism and expertise. HOW DOES IT WORK? Prospective clients contact the ASID NJ Chapter office and are matched with a participating designer. Clients can elect a one- or two-hour consultation at the special rate of $150 per hour. At the end of the designer’s visit, participants will get to designate which of the 24 New Jersey Habitat for Humanity affiliates will receive their consultation fee. The check will be written directly to that Habitat affiliate. The designer then mails the check to our chapter office. ASID NJ will forward the checks to the benefitting Habitats at the close of the program. If you haven’t already volunteered to participate, it’s not too late! ASID NJ designers are welcome to sign up to be a part of this wonderful program. You will be called upon to donate your time no more than twice, unless you would like to handle more. And you can designate what counties you are willing to travel to. ASID’s 1% initiative encourages designers to devote 1% of their time to pro bono service. Get started on your 1% by volunteering to participate in this year’s Spruce It Up program.

Strategic Planning for our ASID NJ and the Interior Design Profession By Jana Manning, ASID On June 16, the incoming board of directors and all committee chairpersons (“the Strategic Planning Committee”) met in Edgewater for a long day of strategic planning, just before our June mixer at The Pearl. Each year the strategic planning process begins with a discussion of the top line goals that come from ASID national. The idea is to align all state chapters in pursuing the same goals for the benefit of ASID members and to advance the interior design profession. Informed by our recent Chapter survey results, the committee chairs took the lead in defining specific initiatives for the upcoming fiscal year, combining support of the national goals with our member’s survey feedback. The strategic plan is posted on our Chapter website (under the Chapter Info tab) and will be the board and committees’ “North Star,” keeping our initiatives focused on the big picture.
