During the 2015 Chapter Challenge to support the ASID Foundation and its mission to transform lives through design, ASID challenged every chapter to help raise a specific amount of money to support this worthy endeavor. As the year progressed, the Society asked all chapters to go beyond this predetermined benchmark and be creative in raising additional money. We are proud to announce that New Jersey did its job. Our chapter came in #4 in the top five chapters that exceeded their 2015 fundraising goal. The Chapter also came in at #5 in the top five dollar amounts donated. Thank you to all who participated! To learn more about the Foundation’s valuable work, visit www.asidfoundation.org.

Moving On Up!

Congratulations to Donna Domenicali on passing the NCIDQ exam and advancing to Professional Membership in ASID. Donna is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). She founded her company, Blue Heron Designs, Inc., in 1996 to create space and design solutions that integrate clients’ passions, accommodate their evolving lifestyle, and anticipate their future needs. Her interest in universal design and aging-in-place began during her years at the New York School of Interior Design and led to an introduction to Christopher and Dana Reeve, who allowed her to use their house plans for a senior year project. As part of her company's commitment to supporting community projects, Donna has participated in several Habitat for Humanity missions, most recently, the first Women Build home under Coastal Habitat for Humanity. She has been a guest speaker for several nonprofit groups, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She has also been President of the Central Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). Donna was ASID NJ chapter president in 2013/2014. She also served terms as Membership Director, co-chair of the Marketing Committee, and STEP Committee chair. She continues to be an active member of the chapter and serves on the National Chapter Support Team (CST) council, advising seven chapters in the southwest U.S.

TECHNOLOGY IS INFURIATING!!!

searches/databases--and combined them all into one. With Wecora all pricing, specifications and presentation images are consolidated in one location and can be used for multiple projects. I estimate that I have spent approximately a third of the time on the selection and presentation process then I had previously. My clients can collaborate, comment and fine-tune selections quickly and easily which, in turn, speeds the decision-making process.

by Denise Jones, ASID

All the apps, upgrades, usernames, passcodes, gadgets and gizmos . . . it’s enough to drive us all insane! I don’t know about you but I’m not dealing with it very well and know I should be paying more attention to the latest, greatest technology but who has time? Well, thank heaven our chapter brought us Phyllis Harbinger, ASID, CID! Phyllis is the principal and owner of the award winning Design Concepts/Interiors, LLC, is past president of the ASID New York Chapter, an assistant adjunct professor at FIT and has appeared on HGTV as a winning designer and guest judge. Needless to say, Phyllis knows our industry. In late September I attended her Productivity CEU held just before our “Pass The Gavel” event at The Stone House in Warren, N.J. There Phyllis literally blessed us with her knowledge. Let me tell you, this CEU was chock full of valuable information that I actually began using the very next day! During her presentation, Phyllis shared research she and her staff have compiled of industry specific tools that can help our businesses become more efficient, collaborative and fun. One online tool she shared was called Wecora (www.wecora.com). Wecora has taken three separate selection and specification components I used previously--Excel, Keynote and online item

This is an example of just one nugget of information I received that day as well as Phyllis’ book, “The Interior Design Productivity Toolbox,” a tremendous resource which I refer to on a weekly if not daily basis. I am so grateful to have attended this CEU and to have learned of these valuable tools. Kudos to our chapter for providing industry specific resources to help quiet the noise of technology and deliver tangible, valuable information that can help our businesses today. I am more productive and profitable than ever and have ASID NJ to thank!

Membership Benefits

Did you know that potential clients may find you online in several places? Is your ASID member profile up-to-date on both the national and the ASID NJ websites? Our ASID NJ Chapter synchronizes your profile information from National and populates your information to our chapter's website's "Find A Designer" section (located at the lower part of the homepage). We regularly promote YOU and YOUR BUSINESS, not only from this homepage, but also in our chapter's Public Relations efforts (like the Bergen Record, Asp1re and more printed magazines), and in our public social media messages. In addition to our chapter's "Find A Designer" section, your information is also posted at National. National: https://www.asid.org/referral-service NJ Chapter: http://asidnj.org/find-a-designer/ Basic Member Profile: If you haven't invested in your own website, you are still visible from these two pages (National and New Jersey Chapter). Log into the ASID.org homepage, click on "My Account" and select "Manage Referral Directory" from the drop-down menu. Select "Manage My Designer Referral Profile" where you may upload your headshot, develop and share project photos (photo gallery), develop your biography, post awards you've received, outline the services you offer, and post your fee structure(s). Complete Profiles are 80% more likely to be considered for new projects then those that only have the member name and phone number or email address. It's FREE with your membership, and you may update it at any time! Premier Profile Page: Numerous members/designers have also invested in our chapter's additional Premier Profile Page for a nominal annual fee. Countless designers with a Premier Profile Page have shared that the investment in this Page has paid for itself; some referral projects have paid off this investment within the first six months! The concept is the same as your Membership Profile from National - post your headshot, contact information, project photos, awards and fee structure(s). If you already have a website, your Profile can link to your website. Take advantage of the Premier Profile Page, or update your Basic Member Profile - you'll be glad you took the time, and the rewards will not only be personally satisfying, but you'll increase your exposure for the interior design business you've built!

Are you an ASID designer in the first five years of practice? This group is for you: EMERGING PROFESSIONALS ASID NJ has EPs meeting in small groups in various locations around the state to discuss issues of importance to those putting together their business and career efforts. In December and January, there were meetings scheduled in the Union, Ramsey and Perth Amboy areas on product technologies, business practices, and tile selection and patterning for residential and commercial work. Future locations and topics will change periodically. If you would like to attend and/or have a topic that you want discussed, please give your name and contact info to Isabelle, our ASID NJ chapter administrator. Isabelle can be reached at administrator@nj.asid.org or (732) 787-5981. If you are an EP, make it your New Year’s Resolution to join one of these groups. You and your business will benefit greatly.

DINE and DESIGN

We are hungry for volunteers. We are looking for ASID NJ members who are interested in an evening of great food and design conversation (just for the fun of it). Volunteers will search for “up-andcoming” or “already-on-the-watch-list” chefs/restaurants and organize a small group of our design community to enjoy a lovely evening. The restauranteur or chef can share with the design community the thought process that led to “Why this Space?” or the group could just meet on their own and discuss matters concerning them. Each event is to attract 10—15 Design/IP professionals. Locations can vary. If you don't want to be an organizer, but you have some wonderful restaurant suggestions, we'll take that, too. Restaurants will be selected in several counties of the state. Contact administrator@nj.asid.org to volunteer.

ALL ABOARD FOR NEOCON EAST!

StudentNEWS

Thank you, Consentino!

This year, NeoCon East had a new location: the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on Thursday, November 10, 2015. Alan Alda once said that "creative is a place where no one has ever been and you can't get there by bus," but we proved you can. ASID NJ Chapter filled two buses and travelled to NeoCon East with 75 attendees— 21 Professional members and 50 students with four faculty members. Thank you to Cosentino for sponsoring the event and to Linda O'Shea from Kean and Celeste Chirichello from Brookdale for enthusiastically organizing the students. The Student Road Map, exclusive for ASID Student Members, was a success. Students were able to take a tour with a professional designer who helped them navigate through the trade show and meet with exhibitors. ASID Career Exchange was also a helpful tool for the students and recent graduates to not only connect with other designers and professionals but also to have a one-on-one conversation that provided critical feedback on their portfolios and résumés. It was a great networking opportunity that also increased their chances of getting an internship.

I took the bus from Kean University and really enjoyed the video and prizes from the bus sponsor Cosentino. They handed out all sorts of stuff like tape measures and backpacks. The bus consisted of various design professional and students. I went as a group and explored the show floor on my own. For me, this was not a class requirement; I would attend other events in the future. Next time, I would attend the event on the first day to take advantage of all the early activities. --Sarah Mahoney, Kean University student

The ASID roadmap event was a great opportunity to meet other ASID members, students from other schools and connect with vendors in a small group. It was also nice to be navigated through the show floor with someone who had knowledge and experience, since these shows are usually large. I stopped by the ASID Career Development event and met with some professional vendors for a brief information and talk session. I did not bring my portfolio and regret missing the opportunity to have a professional review it. I will definitely bring it next time! --Jodi Heimowitz, Kean University Interior Design Senior

The career exchange was the only ASID event that I attended at NeoCon. When meeting my first designer to review my portfolio, after a few minutes it was clear that we did not connect. Luckily, I had the opportunity to meet with another designer. This second experience was completely different from the first. She was incredibly engaged and overall provided amazing constructive criticism. It’s because of her that the event was worth it.

Brookdale Students on NeoCon bus

It was my first time attending an ASID Career Exchange or any career development event offered through the American Society of Interior Designers. I had my initial reservations and even wondered if the event would be of any value to me as a recent graduate who had already been on a number of interviews. Portfolio and résumé review wasn’t something I was interested in, since I had plenty of portfolio reviews upon graduation, and this wasn’t the reason I attended Career Exchange.

Overall, the experience was productive and I was glad to gain some professional insight on my portfolio. I would recommend that students attend an event like this as I feel the professional advice could benefit them greatly. Perhaps a short survey to help pair students with designers in their preferred area of design would be a good idea.

Instead I utilized my 20 minutes with Maria Viola-Kuttruff, Allied ASID, somewhat like an “advice session.” I informed her of my employment struggles as a young designer with little experience, previous interview scenarios, and reviewed a few projects in my undergraduate portfolio and told her, “I would like for you to be as brutally honest as possible. Please look over my credentials and tell me the things my interviewers wouldn’t dare to ever mention.” And she did just that.

--Cynthia Serrao, recent Kean University graduate

My 25-minute session with Maria was truly a valuable experience and allowed me to gain a new and fresh perspective on both my undergraduate portfolio and my interviewing techniques. I got deeper, rawer, and more honest advice on how to land my next interview. I not only left with great advice but also with the confidence needed to stand out in a pool of talented designers. --Kimberly Gomes, recent Kean University graduate Kean Students at NeoCon East NEW JERSEY CHAPTER | ISSUE IV - 21 -

Real World Design

By Megan Laughlin, Student ASID ASID has a myriad of opportunities for student members to become involved with. One of these great programs is Real World Design Week. Since its launch in 2008, it has helped facilitate student to professional relationships with thousands of interior design students just like myself.

I participated in Real World Design Week in November, 2014. I was fortunate to be afforded this opportunity, even while I was not yet an ASID member. This is a great tool to use to whet the appetites of potential future student members. It was only a week after that I became an active student member and later the student chapter president at Kean University. I shadowed interior designer and ASID member Hope Sferra for a day and got the chance to look into what my future could hold. It was a unique experience to be able to see how my studies applied in the field and to have her as an open ear to listen to my many questions. She was a great resource for me on that day and even still now a year later. The benefits of that one day have reached far beyond any expectations I could have had and am looking forward to more of these opportunities in the future. For 2016 Real World Design Week is receiving a major overhaul. We will see more opportunities to receive mentorship all throughout the calendar year, as well as opportunities that span across all career stages. As 2016 begins, I will have my eyes peeled for this new program sequence and look forward to sharing in it with my fellow student chapter members.
