Dear Members, It seems that one of the biggest challenges of our profession is how to define and communicate the value of interior design to the public, to our clients, to other design professionals and even to ourselves! One of our goals as an organization is to demonstrate and communicate the value of interior design, and yet what is it, precisely? If you’re like me, it is difficult to bring forth easily, clearly and consistently the words that describe what I do and what I bring to the table in a way that resonates with the public. How can we tell our story precisely and succinctly enough so that others truly understand the value of interior design— especially potential clients? Yes, we use the elements and principles of design. We employ our innate abilities. We depend on our knowledge of codes and construction. And we draw from research studies, surveys, psychology, anthropometrics and other sciences to help us develop a thoughtful, responsible, cohesive, effective, safe, sound, and aesthetically pleasing solution that will address clients’ goals. But what a mouthful that is! So how do we say this in a nutshell? How about this: “We shape the spaces that shape the human experience.”

VOLUME II • 2014 | NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
This concise definition is part of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers* (IFI) Interiors Declaration. As an outcome of IFI’s 2011 Design Frontiers: Interiors Entity Global Symposium, the Declaration is a multiyear, worldwide consensus-based statement for Interiors. It has several parts to it, including concise statements of the value, relevance, responsibility, culture, business, knowledge and identity of interior architecture and design—the essential foundations of our field. In fact, the Declaration has been so widely accepted that it has been translated into ten languages, including Korean, Russian and Turkish. The Declaration goes on to say that interior designers “determine the relationship of people to spaces based on psychological and physical parameters, to improve the quality of life.” Additionally, the process “delivers economic, functional, aesthetic and social advantage that helps clients understand the value of their decisions and enables better decisions that are beneficial to users and to society.” So next time you’re stopped in an elevator and asked what you do, you’ll have at least one response in hand. I know I’m going to practice saying, “I shape the spaces that shape us and our experiences.” As always, thank you for your support of our chapter. Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID President, ASID New Jersey Chapter 2013-2014 *A partner of the International Design Alliance, IFI is the international federating body for interior architecture/design organizations and acts as a global forum for the development and exchange of education, research, and practice. Editor’s Note This years’ trade show was kicked off with an insightful CEU presented by Crans Baldwin, the CEO of Edward Ferrell/Lewis Mittman, about the state of our industry which is evolving rapidly. He emphasized that adaptation to change is key to success. Vendors and designers must continue to work together to create stronger ties, exclusive product, and also to promote excellence in both quality and service. He also noted a trend in smaller, boutique showrooms across the country, offering high end, specialized home furnishings. Barbara Viteri of Viteri Style Management, followed Cran’s presentation with “Design Your Hustle”, an inspiring CEU about the importance of branding your business.

Holly chose the BBC sitcom “Keeping Up Appearances.” She invented a what-if episode: What if Hyacinth Bucket was American and what if she received a stag head champagne bucket as a Mother’s Day gift from Onslow, her sofa-dwelling brother-in-law? Says Holly, “Hyacinth has settled on filling the bucket with a colorful fresh floral arrangement – to hide the stag heads of course. Mini-galvanized buckets of (faux) hyacinths as Mother’s Day gifts for each of her sisters (Rose, Violet and Daisy) are the final touch.”

Industry Partners Up Close By Rona Spiegel, ASID
Componex Did you ever wonder what a company does from its name? Some names are easy to figure out. Componex-NY is not one of them! When Bob Squirrell signed up for the Trade Show, I asked him what his company did. And his answer was a bit complex. Bob is the rep for lots of lines that a cabinetmaker requires. So why would he join ASID as an Industry Partner? Because some of those companies he represents are lines an interior designer would specify. And they are terrific in every way. At our May Trade Show, Bob showed off one of his best designer lines—Art for Everyday. The designs are contemporary with clean lines. Made exclusively in North America, this company has fabulous, original architectural woodcarving designs. A great advantage of using this company is speed. Because they are local, they can deliver within 48 hours of receiving an order. The production of your custom-designed pieces is speeded up. Trade Show Chair Michael Marriotti, ASID with Bob Squirrell, IP, Componex This is a firm that inspires the designer to draw. They can take your original molding designs and have them produced for your project. The turn-around time for this special service is quite quick. Another of the companies Bob represents has specialty LED lighting for use inside your cabinet designs. Check it out!
Give Bob a call…914-762-1450 so he can show you the latest and best products for your specification.

Lighting Workshop Recap by Wendy Cruz-Gonzalez, ASID
needs and a lamp source's technological benefits and limitations in order to select the most beneficial solution for the lighting control application.
On March 27, ASID NJ Chapter held a Lighting Workshop hosted by one of our newest Industry Partners, Mark Lighting. Participants in the workshop had the opportunity to tour Mark’s manufacturing facility in the sequence of the manufacturing process, allowing us to understand the composition of a light fixture and the process that goes into creating one. Mark Lighting’s Edison, New Jersey location houses corporate offices and a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility which employs lean manufacturing techniques that cut down on the amount of time and steps it takes a worker to complete a given task, as well as the amount of waste that is created in the factory. The lighting fixtures manufactured here are installed in a wide variety of project types including commercial, educational, high-end residential, retail and health care. After the manufacturing tour, the workshop continued with a presentation by Tim O’Brien, VP and GM of Mark Lighting and Healthcare Lighting, which provided a lively discussion and Q&A on different lighting design topics. Through this we learned different variables to consider for light source selection and placement for cove, wall washing, perimeter lighting and interior flood lighting applications. We also explored control options for LED and fluorescent systems, and he urged us to be mindful of a project's

As the discussion evolved, we covered topics in design aesthetics and performance. To provide a well designed and illuminated space, a designer must take into account the optimal efficiency of a light source and evaluate how a light fixture’s performance will impact the quality of the design. Color and illuminance are very unique factors which, when paired together, deeply impact a person's visual perception of an object, texture, space or form. The location of a light fixture relative to the surface it is illuminating can be used to accentuate textures on a surface or minimize them. In order to achieve the desired lighting levels, light sources must be thoughtfully located and selected to provide the preferred illuminance on a surface and brightness gradients that work with the design. Architectural appeal, psychological response and the lighting of surfaces are interconnected and each causes a reaction in our human eye. Yet interestingly enough, there is a difference in what we see versus what our brain thinks we see. Lighting, colors and textures have the incredible ability to transform interior spaces. As Tim said, we must "design with an awareness of our natural visual systems."

Committee Reports Marketing Committee by Lisa Campoli, Allied ASID Spruce It Up! Spruce It Up is a program developed to: • increase public awareness of the ASID brand. • offer consumers personal insights into what a professional interior designer can help them achieve. • create community goodwill through partnerships with worthy charitable organizations. Spruce It Up is not a “given” for an immediate job for participating designers. This program is all about showing our professionalism, experience and expertise, as well as leaving a stellar impression of how we go about doing business. In 2014, the designated beneficiary is Habitat for Humanity. Here’s how it works: Businesses and homeowners alike have the opportunity to sign up for a one-on-one professional consultation with ASID NJ designers who volunteer to be a part of this program. Cost to the public for consultations is $150 per hour, maximum two-hour consultation. At the end of the designer’s visit, participants will get to designate which of the 24 New Jersey Habitat for Humanity affiliates will receive their consultation fee. The check will be written directly to that Habitat affiliate. ASID NJ will collect the checks and forward them to the benefitting Habitats at the close of the program. Spruce It Up will run from September 1-October 31, 2014. Sign-up information will be distributed to our designers via email. You can also download an enrollment form by visiting www.asidnj.org. Go to the Members tab, click on Designers, then Spruce It Up Enrollment. When signing up, designers can indicate their geographic preferences and will be matched up accordingly. As this issue of NJ Inspire goes to press, we have received enthusiastic response from the media and look forward to their assistance in promoting this worthwhile endeavor. Outreach to the Real Estate Community The Marketing Committee has been exploring ways to develop synergy between the interior design professionals and real estate professionals. Marketing Committee member Alicia Shearer, ASID, who is also a real estate agent, is chairing this endeavor. (See her article, “Real Estate & Interior Design,” in the Spring 2013 issue of NJ Inspire, which you can access under the Chapter Info tab of www.asidnj.org.) If you are a designer who also has a real estate license, please contact Alicia at 973670-7210 or aliciashearer@yahoo.com so you can contribute your expertise to this endeavor.

2014 Conference & Industry Partner Trade Show by Michael Mariotti, ASID, Trade Show Chair
Best PR Person” was well attended and well received.
When I was helping Donna Domenicali last year with the trade show, I remember asking her how she felt when it was all done, and she said “it was like childbirth.” Trade show is about nine months worth of planning ... and now I fully understand what she meant!
Best Booth award went to Peaslee Designs, a resource for handcrafted wood furniture and cabinets.
While you are planning the trade show, you agonize over many of the details and want to make sure that it is all just right. I have previously stated, “You asked, and we listened.” Moving the trade show to a new venue was no small undertaking, but one that I am so glad that I was able to accomplish. Many of us did not like the feel and location of the previous place. The CEU room was not a comfortable space to sit and learn for a long period of time. We have gotten tremendously positive feedback from this year’s trade show, both from the designers and IPs alike. The CEU room had space and was a very comfortable environment to learn in. The room was packed with designers eager to hear great presentations from Crans Baldwin, Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman (“The Interior Design Industry in 2014— What’s Next?”), Barbara Viteri, Viteri Style Management, LLC (“Design Your Hustle”) and Diana Rattazzi, Benjamin Moore & Co. (“Paint Technology”). Having the lunch served on the main floor with the IPs, designers and students dining together really gave a great sense of community and bonding between the groups. Another of this year’s innovations was to have a keynote speaker on the trade show floor. Libby Langdon’s presentation on “How to Be Your Own

Creative Touch For years, Creative Touch has specialized in producing beautifully handcrafted, one-of-a-kind rug collections for the wholesale market. Their collections span the spectrum in styles and price points.
Creative Touch's history goes back three generations. The story begins in Turkey, where the family had been rug merchants and wholesalers and later on became manufacturers. Their operation still continues to this date in Turkey. Baki Ildiz, the face of Creative Touch to the design community, was born in Turkey, moved with his family to America when he was still in high school and got involved in the family rug business while he was working for Target At the Trade Show: Michael Mariotti, ASID Corporation. His family was (center) with Cambria Ildiz (left) and Baki Ildiz (right), Creative Touch bringing smaller items, such as accessories and less expensive "kilim" flat-woven rugs, to weekend markets in the Portland, Oregon area. They opened their first small retail shop in Hillsboro, Oregon. However, their business model quickly changed into a wholesale operation and they moved to a larger warehouse in Portland. In 2005, they moved to New Jersey and since then Creative Rugs has been servicing their clients through their showroom in Secaucus. Their productions vary from modern and custom rugs to older, vintage and antique pieces. They offer traditional classics as well as the latest trends, ranging from award-winning high-end productions to striking over-dyed vintage designs. They have various different price points, styles, and constructions to be able to service unique and individual tastes. Many of their collections can be customized depending on the client’s needs. “Our vast inventory will satisfy almost any project,” says Baki. “As we are geared for trade, we welcome all designers to come and visit our showroom. The showroom is designed to accommodate a designer's meeting with their client, to have a view or make a selection for a project in a clutter-free, clean, airy and professional environment.”

Hansgrohe is a green company that produces beautifully designed mixers and faucets for showers, bathtubs, washbasins and kitchens. Exciting new offerings include: At the Trade Show: Michael Reiman, Hansgrohe
Hansgrohe's Select E 120 AIR Handshower With the option of three soothing jet sprays (Rain, RainAir and Whirl) available at the simple touch of the "Select" button, the Raindance E Select handshower offers a truly custom showering experience. Available in chrome, brushed nickel or a dual white/chrome finish. Metris Kitchen Collection Designed in collaboration with Phoenix Design, Hansgrohe has employed an innovative design vocabulary specifically for the Metris kitchen line, which includes a HighArc, Prep and Bar faucet. Its signature “SoftCube” design complements the rectangular shape found in many sinks. Extended surfaces of the long, ergonomically shaped handle offer plenty of contact area for hands and fingers, even elbows, making turning the faucet on and off and adjusting the temperature easy and convenient. The Metris 2-spray HighArc and Prep kitchen faucets with pull out sprays boast an extendable handshower with two jet types. Users can easily grab the hand spray from the front and pull it towards them in one streamlined movement. Because the sprayers pull outwards and not down, there is plenty of hose length so even large and unwieldy pots and pans can be filled or rinsed comfortably. Available in a chrome or steel optik finish. Hansgrohe+Axor Das Design Competition Hansgrohe has launched its first-ever design competition to honor excellence in projects that feature its products. The Hansgrohe+Axor Das Design Competition is open to all U.S.-based architects and designers and all projects built in the U.S. within the past three years. To acknowledge the range of Hansgrohe and Axor environments, from hotel and restaurant bathrooms to private kitchens and baths, the competition offers four categories of entry—Residential, Commercial, Hospitality
CHAPTER NEWS and Multi-Housing/High-Rise. Along with the discoveries at the show, it's an amazing opportunity to get to know the Hansgrohe team and other designers on the tour. NJIT's Interior Design Program Achieves Full CIDA Accreditation The interior design program at NJIT’s School of Art + Design has been officially awarded full accreditation by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The decision was based on the interior design program’s demonstrated achievement of accreditation standards, which are evaluated within the context and overarching purpose and intent of the program. The visiting CIDA team reported that “the interior design program at NJIT is successful in delivering a professional-level education to its students.” The team report pointed out numerous strengths that were evident in student outcomes, program content delivery and opportunities for student development provided by the school, particularly in global perspective for design, design process, collaboration, communication, professionalism and business practice, space and form, interior construction and building systems.

One program strength identified by CIDA is communication based on their observation that “students demonstrated a high level of competence with a variety of graphic, written and verbal communication skills. Competence in visual communication was highly evident in student work throughout the curriculum, particularly in the use of digital communication and 3-dimensional physical models. Students used a wide variety of digital media.” The visiting team was impressed with the Collaborative Design Studio that interior design students take with their peers from School of Art + Design’s digital design and industrial design programs along with architecture students. The report stated that “NJIT does an exceptional job of engaging students in a collaborative studio experience. (It) is a program strength. Collaborative Design Studio affords a view into the excitement and dynamism of the interdisciplinary experience.” Among other program strengths explicitly noted in the CIDA report are: global perspective for design; the design process (noting that “the program excels in offering students opportunities to explore a wide variety of project types at all scales to develop a strong design process”); and professionalism and business practice. The report specifically emphasized the public and community service opportunities beyond the classroom provided by the program such as “a summer course in Costa Rica for ongoing construction of a youth hotel; an alternative spring break to help super storm Sandy recovery efforts; the Educate Tomorrow fundraising event; NeoCon; the Dream Room Makeover community project; the 2012 Mansion in May Showhouse design; and community makeover and redesign volunteer projects through the ASID Student Chapter. The many opportunities provided by the program, school, and college for public and community service are program strengths.” The report concludes by stating that “NJIT interior design graduates are clearly well prepared to enter the profession with a well-rounded knowledge base, excellent digital skills and thorough understanding of the 3-dimensional built environment. Graduates understand the value of design and its contribution to the welfare of their clients and the public. Graduates have a strong sense of purpose in designing for a wide range of contexts, be it a single object, cultural, complex, community or multidiscipline.” The CIDA Accreditation is effective as of March 2014.

Career Day On April 12, ASID NJ Chapter sponsored a very successful Career Day. Approximately 70 interior designs students from around the state joined us at Berkeley College to meet practicing ASID member designers, participate in roundtable discussions, engage in portfolio and résumé reviews, and have a bit of fun. The students had the opportunity to hear first-hand from four successful interior designers: Diane Boyer, ASID; Diane Durocher, ASID; Judy Miller, Allied ASID; and Lauren Reinhard, Allied ASID (who serves on the ASID Student Advisory Council). The designers shared their paths to success, the challenges they face, and covered a range of design specialties, including high-end residential, commercial, and aviation design. Chapter President Donna Domenicali, Allied ASID, Diane Goté, FASID and Chapter PR Consultant Anne Marie Soto all spoke to the students regarding the many benefits of their affiliations with ASID and especially
the New Jersey Chapter. After lunch, the students had the opportunity for some up close and personal discussions with the designers in attendance. Thank you to Berkeley College for serving as our host location (especially Dr. Alphonse Torino, Dr. Ernesto Fong and Jason Lee) and to the four ASID NJ Industry Partners whose support as tabletop sponsors helped make the day happen: New Jersey Decorating Exchange, Walker Zanger, Sherwin Williams and Tandus Centiva. Thanks to Design NJ, Aspire, Kravet, Shaw Contract Group, Wayne Tile Co. and our sponsors, the students went home with door prizes and full goodie bags. Gratitude goes to the hardworking Career Day committee under the excellent chairmanship of Michelle Petriello, Allied ASID and the guidance of ASID NJ Board Member Tracey Taylor, Allied ASID.
