VOL IV • 2014 | NEW JERSEY CHAPTER
It seems like just yesterday that my year as chapter president began but as you read this, it is already 2015. And I’m happy to report that lots of exciting things have been going on in our chapter. And as I look over what we have accomplished so far, “outreach” seems to emerge as a theme. Community Outreach ASID NJ members have demonstrated their generosity in various ways this fall. Thanks to the efforts of so many designers, our Spruce It Up program raised almost $13,000 for Habitat for Humanity. At our holiday party, members generously contributed gifts for teens in foster care who are affiliated with Essex County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Our November networking meeting was held at the Designer Show House of New Jersey, which is a fundraiser for Hackensack Hospital. To support this effort, the chapter donated $840.00 from the evening’s proceeds to the hospital. Membership Outreach Our goal is to spread the word to others in the design community who are eligible to become members of ASID . . . and to reach out to lapsed members in the hopes that they will return to the ASID fold. In partnership with DSA Publishing, we mailed the last issue of NJ Inspire to lapsed members. The mailing included a cover letter highlighting our recent achievements and encouraging them to renew their ASID membership. For our November meeting, members were encouraged to bring a nonmember designer, trade professional, or student as a guest. If the guest applied for membership on the night of the event, their guest admission was credited against membership fees. Six guests took At ASID’s CLC (Chapter Leadership Conference) this past June in Los advantage of this Angeles, Michael Mariotti, ASID, Jana Manning, ASID, Suzan Globus, offer. FASID and Barbara Schoenfeld, ASID joined forces for a (successful!) group To join our bid on dinner for eight hosted by Christopher Hyland, renown interiors and LinkedIn group, furnishings designer, at his home in New York City. The beneficiary of our one does not winning bid was the ASID Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation have to be a and its work, visit www.asidfoundation.org. As you can see from this photo, Cont. on page 5 we all had an elegant and wonderful evening.

member of our chapter. This group gives us the opportunity to communicate across the design community to encourage others to attend our programs and events. Note: If you are on LinkedIn and not a member of this group, it’s name is ASID-New Jersey. We’d love for you to be a part of it. Student Outreach Re-establishing our connections with the schools, forging alliances with them, and developing programs that are of value to the student population are important items on our agenda for this year. With this in mind, several board members (Jana Manning, Ginny Zonfrilli and Kathleen Ward) joined me in making personal visits to the schools. To date, one or more of us have visited Kean University, Brookdale Community College and Berkeley College and had exciting and profitable dialogues with all of them. We will be making visits to more schools in January. Career Day, which is for all interior design students, will take place on Saturday, March 7 at Kean University. We are encouraging students to join our committees so that they can have a voice in the chapter. Trade Show Chair Jana Manning, ASID and her trade show committee have been exploring many avenues for student involvement in ASIdeas Design Forum & Expo on April 9th. Watch for some exciting developments!!

Public Relations Report By Anne Marie Soto, ASID NJ Public Relations/Marketing Consultant The following publications recently highlighted ASID NJ interior designers. This list, updated regularly, appears in the In the Press section under the Media tab on our chapter’s website (www.asidnj.org). If available, a live link is included for each placement. I also post many of them on our public Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ASIDNew Jersey). To do this, we monitor the major New Jersey publications, including those listed here. If you have been featured in other publications, submit your information by email to ams_assoc@prodigy.net. Be sure to include the name and date of the publication, the name of the article, and the appropriate page numbers. In addition, if you have been interviewed on the radio or on a Webcast, appeared on a TV program, or been published in a book, please let me know about that, too. Many of these placements came as a result of our chapter’s PR Alerts, which are emailed to professional, allied and associate members.

Industry Partners Up Close In our last issue of NJ Inspire, we highlighted each one of our regular advertisers up close to show our appreciation for their continued support to our New Jersey chapter. Our apologies to both Peter Rymwid Photography and Warshauer Electric Supply for running an incorrect version of each of their biographies. The corrected information is listed below.
Peter Rymwid Photography Peter Rymwid Professional Architectural Photographer 973-628-1527 www.peterrymwid.com prymwid@aol.com
PETER RYMWID PHOTOGRAPHY
Peter Rymwid was directed towards recognizing and appreciating the arts starting early in his life. His teenage years were spent on touring the most prestigious art institutions in Europe, and studying international painting and sculpture. However, his true contact with art took place while analyzing paintings and sculptures of his cousin, a recognized Polish sculptor, and later when assisting his uncle, also a sculptor in his studio in Germany. Upon his arrival to the US, Peter extended his interest in art by studying computer science and graphics at NJIT in Newark, N.J., and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In 1986, as a consequence of his collaboration with an international group of architects and interior designers in New York, Peter began photographing interiors and architecture. He photographs ancient, traditional or contemporary interiors. His goal is to depict best architectural features, and present them with life and dramatic value.
Peter’s work can be seen in major magazines in the U.S. and overseas such as European Vogue, South African Habitat magazine, American Architectural Digest, Florida Design, Interior Design, Traditional Home, New York Spaces and DesignNJ magazine. Within the past 10 years, magazines and book publishers awarded Peter's talent with over 80 front covers! His clients include architects, interior designers, and builders in the U.S. as well as overseas. Peter's work has helped his clients achieve top awards in many of the most prestigious national design competitions and also top awards in the ASID NJ Design Excellence competition. In the past few years Traditional Home magazine designated Peter to photograph Manhattan, New Jersey and North Carolina Designer Show Houses for their sponsoring publication.

A complete renovation went underway in 2012, forming one of the most innovative showrooms in the country, and within the first year was named Lutron Five Start Showroom and earned numerous awards, including tED Magazine’s Best Creative Display and Best Showroom from Community Builders & Remodelers of NJ, NJ Builders and Shore Builders Associations. Spruce It Up Program By Hope Mary Sferra, Allied ASID, Spruce It Up Director The annual 2014 ASID NJ Chapter Spruce It Program ran earlier this fall, from September 1 through October 31st. We raised funds for the Affliates of Habiat for Humanity throughout New Jersey. With free advertising offered to us from magazines and newspapers, I received 75 inquiries from interested consumers. Additionally, 25 of our chapter designers volunteered their time and expertise and met with most of the

CHAPTER NEWS participants helping them with one- or two-hour consultations giving advice, ideas, solving challenges and essentially showing these individuals the value ASID NJ designers bring to any project. This is by far one of the most valuable public awareness programs we have in our chapter, and having the ability to make this many matches made history for our state's chapter. The response from the public was astounding in that they appreciated the give-back to Habitat for Humanity and the opportunity to invite a designer into their own home and/or office. It is obviously such a good fit given what we do as professionals: A real win-win for everyone. Happily, we raised over $12,000 in monies that will go directly to Habitat. Each participating consumer was able to look at the list of 25 Affiliates/Habitat Chapters across the state and makes their choice when writing their check for their one-hour consultation ($150) or two hour consultation ($300). There were so many benefits to this program. The funds raised for Habitat for Humanity, the ability to introduce consumers to a designer experience because they were curious or maybe intimidated about the process. Lastly, the program introduced consumers to the professionalism we represent. As Director of the program, I want to personally thank all of those designers who volunteered their time, energy and expertise to these consultations.

It’s the evolution of the ASID NJ Industry Partner Trade Show and you don’t want to miss this! Calling all Design Leaders! The trade show has been a member-favorite event for many years. To keep it vital and relevant to our membership of design leaders in New Jersey, we’re expanding the scope by creating a forum for the exchange of big ideas as well as opportunities to see exciting products, learn and engage with fellow members.
What’s with the new name? We felt that “trade show” didn’t quite convey the full story, so we’re proud to introduce the event’s new name and logo. In this age of technology where almost anything is possible, it’s our ideas and our ability to implement them that set us apart. Today’s speed of change requires design leaders to stay abreast and also reflect, to generate ideas and keep innovation a part of our practice. So come, get inspired by the latest products and learn from the experts how to use them. This new reality applies whether your spaces are traditional or ultracontemporary, residential or commercial, so come, see, learn, and get inspired!

Morning CEU at ASIdeas
Ethical Design: What Does It Look Like? Susan Szenasy is back! Those of you who attended our chapter’s October 2013 program meeting at Kean University won’t need any convincing as to what an inspiring speaker Susan Szenasy is! At that event, the audience listened intently to Susan’s thoughts on the state of our profession and her insights into the future of design collaboration among the varied design disciplines and across the generational divides. We are delighted that she is returning to our chapter as the presenter of the morning CEU at ASIdeas.
Susan will take on the large issues of our day and arm us to lead our profession into the future. Here’s an excerpt from the CEU description:
Susan Szenasy is editor in chief of Metropolis magazine, the author of several books on design, an internationally-recognized authority on sustainability and design, and has received too many commendations for us to list. Susan’s latest book, “Szenasy, Design Advocate,” has been published with great reception and reviews.
Ethical Design touches on the personal choices each designer makes, personal choices based on knowledge of the larger issues [including] environmental degradation and the need to create environments that serve the people who inhabit the designed spaces. These choices shape the individual designer’s practice, the profession, the community, the geographical region, society at large, and the earth itself.
Her CEU presentation (10:00 am-12:00 noon) at ASIdeas is not to be missed!
Don’t miss it . . . We look forward to seeing you there!

OUTSTANDING ALLIED MEMBER AWARD
Brooke Morales, Allied ASID By Sandy Cabelis, Allied ASID At our September Awards meeting, our chapter honored Brooke Morales, Allied ASID with the Rene Baron Hennessy Award for Outstanding Allied Member. Brooke began her involvement with our chapter back in 2008 when she volunteered to serve on the Programs committee. She jumped in with both feet and selflessly contributed her time and ideas. She then seamlessly moved into the position of chairperson for the 2010-2011 term. The following year she served on the Community Service committee, subsequently chairing this committee in 2012. Most notably, she made significant contributions to the community as the ASID New Jersey liaison to the Career Closet initiative which provides desperately needed interview and career-appropriate clothing to women who find themselves returning to the workforce or starting work for the first time. In 2013 she was nominated to our Board of Directors where she currently serves as Director-atLarge.
This year’s Outstanding Allied Member Brooke Morales (center) with some of the previous years’ winners (l. to r.) Tracey Taylor, Sheila Rich, Sandy Cabelis, Anna Maria Mannarino and Diane Durocher.
To me, she is a trusted colleague, a sometimes partner in crime and a great friend. Congratulations to Brooke Morales as the 2014 recipient of the Renee Baron Hennessey award!
an active member of the chapter for at least five years with service on a committee, or on the Board, or on both. Most importantly, they need to have made a beneficial impact through their volunteer work in the chapter.
About this award: This special award in honor of Rene Baron Hennessy was established to recognize the outstanding service of an Allied Member. The award was instituted by the chapter in 1998 and is voted on and presented by past recipients.
Rene Baron Hennessy, Allied ASID, was one of the brightest stars in the ASID NJ Chapter. She was very proud of her ASID membership and was very active as a volunteer, serving on many committees as well as attending many general membership meetings. Rene realized the importance of ASID and the responsibility it gave to our designers for affecting the health, safety and welfare of the public. She was a sensitive beacon to her ASID friends and clients with her professional advice, knowledge and support. After her death in 1997, the ASID NJ Chapter created this special award in order to keep Rene’s memory alive by honoring an Allied Member whose dedication to the chapter reflects Rene’s commitment.
The Rene Baron Hennessy Award for Outstanding Allied Member is given to an Allied Member whose professional conduct follows the ASID Code of Ethics and whose dedication to ASID is shown through involvement in chapter committees and events. Candidates for the award must have been

Linda Lee Potter, ASID By Mary Sferra, ASID The ASID Chapter Medalist Award is the highest award bestowed by ASID on Society members at the chapter level in recognition of outstanding service and significant contributions to their chapter and to the body of knowledge that supports the profession of interior design. The award is granted on the basis of fulfilling all three of the following criteria: 1. Outstanding service to the chapter and to the profession of interior design. 2. Significant local, regional or national contributions to the interior design profession. 3. Outstanding, significant and continued contributions that have enriched the human experience.

Linda Lee Potter, ASID, this year’s Medalist Award honoree, has long exhibited this kind of dedication to the profession of interior design and to the ASID NJ Chapter. I met Linda while serving together on the Board of Directors and soon we became fast friends. I was immediately impressed by her quiet, determined spirit and leadership qualities. She has a strong resolve and a great sense of ethics. Those who know her well would say she has a quiet strength. Linda has served on many committees over the years. • 2003-2006: Linda served on the Board of Directors, as the Director at Large; • 2005-2006: Linda served on the chapter’s Chairs for Charity Community Service Project as a member of the design committee for Newark Beth Israel Hospice;

majormills Chapter Medalist Award winner Linda Lee Potter, ASID (right) with Chaper Awards Committee Chair Mary Sferra, ASID • Participated in Habitat for Humanity Build Day with the Community Service Committee; • As president-elect, Linda successfully co-chaired the 2007 Industry Partner Conference & Trade Show Committee. The trade show theme that year was Universal Design, with Patricia Moore as keynote speaker. As chapter president, Linda successfully fulfilled the chapter’s Strategic Plan, bringing interesting and innovative programs to the chapter. Linda envisioned bringing the mobile “Green House” from Washington, D.C. for a joint meeting with USGBC. The Green House Gala, hosted at the Morris Museum, received outstanding reviews. She also held the second annual Design Summit in Princeton, N.J. Linda’s commitment to elevating the profession has continued over the years through her service as chair of the Procedures and Bylaws Committee, where the committee’s work and finished document were adapted by National to be used as a template for the rest of the nation. She served as Parliamentarian to a grateful Sharon Sherman during the 2012/2013 chapter year. In addition, Linda chaired the Nominating Committee and has continued her participation on the Trade Show and Design Excellence Awards Committees. She is the recipient of multiple Presidential Citations and received a Gold Award of Excellence in health care design. Linda’s contributions and spirit of giving expands greatly outside of the chapter. I will share one of many: Linda spearheaded a restoration and renovation project for the Ridgewood Avenue Train Station in Glen Ridge, N.J. She organized LOCOMOTION 2000, whereby she and her committee helped to raise $100,000 for this project. The building now serves as a community center for senior citizens, youth and residents at large. Linda has long been dedicated to the profession of interior design and has served as a leader in many capacities to our chapter. Her outstanding leadership and continued involvement in our chapter has strengthened and inspired many of our members to attain leadership positions. This honor is well deserved!
