Don't you just love that quote? I imagine as truly creative people, we all at times in our life dare to think it and feel inspired by it.

President-Elect Gigi Harris, Allied ASID 714-308-0125 PresidentElect@asidocc.org

Of course in design, as in life, there are many things that do limit us; codes, budgets, client fears and insecurities, to name a few. But without some sense of fearlessness resonating inside us, we would be hard pressed to continue breaking new ground and finding innovative design solutions. This rings especially true when someone tells us all the reasons why something can't be done, rather than helping to find a way to do it, as is often the case.

Dear Members,

SUMMER 2014 |

CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER

As I pass the halfway mark in my term as your President and head into the final stretch of our fiscal year, I continue to realize how important it is to have positive people around who inspire me to keep pushing ahead. One of the most important benefits I have found, and the main reason I became a leader in ASID, is the camaraderie I have with so many members in this organization. I am also grateful to be surrounded by a leadership team who continually tries to find new ways to do things and do them better- even if it does involve going out on a limb once in a while and taking chances. In February, we announced the hiring of our new Office Administrator, Kasey Sterling. Kasey is such a positive addition to our Chapter and a breath of fresh air. Also, in February, our Student Career Day took place at the Laguna Design Center and despite a rare early morning of pouring rain, we had a great group of motivated students and equally inspiring panelists. In March, we held our first Emerging Professionals event of the year at Ferguson. We heard of all the great things that Ferguson has planned to keep moving their showroom forward in serving the design community. In addition, March 19 was ASID's 23rd annual Trade Show. Many new Industry Partners, as well as our tried and true supporters, were there to share their latest product offerings. April's General Meeting at Gramar Stone centered around a presentation by dynamic speaker, Feras Irikat, who talked about Design Trends for 2014. So, if you'd like to hear about more innovation, ask Michele Prata about our Design Awards website, sponsored by Cambria. Or talk to Jennifer Anderson and Lauri Howell about our Wine and Design Progressive Showroom Tour held on June 18 at the Laguna Design Center. These exciting ideas and events would not happen without taking a chance and asking the question why not try it? Better yet, show up at a meeting and offer to help plan something great. We are open to hear your thoughts, as we know many of the best ideas have yet to be tried. Let's keep on moving forward.

Warm Regards, Deirdre Eagles, Allied ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President 2013-2014

Dear Colleagues, With summer comes that magical point in time in our chapter’s annual cycle where the anticipation of what’s to come is strong; where the past, present and future all come together to plan for an extraordinary new fiscal year. I feel all the anticipation and excitement as I prepare to begin my term as Chapter President in a few months. We have our new board of directors for next term and strategic planning is in full force. I want to congratulate Jamie Namanny, Allied ASID (President Elect Elect), Michele Prata, Allied ASID (Membership Director), Anita Jacobi, Industry Partner rep for Judy’s Custom Workroom (Director-at-Large) and Nick Virus, Student ASID, Westwood College (Student Representative to the Board). I am thrilled that they will join our continuing board members Valarie Mina, Bonnie Traut, Jennifer Anderson, and myself for an exciting new term beginning October 1st. This month we will be joining chapter leaders from across the country for a weekend of intensive training at the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference in Los Angeles as part of Dwell on Design. ASID National has a new vision for The Society that we will embrace and incorporate into our future plans for ASID Orange County. “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ― Abraham Lincoln I have an incredibly strong and diverse strategic planning committee. We have already had two planning sessions and are in the midst of brainstorming for the coming fiscal year and finalizing our operating budget…not an easy task, if you can imagine. We are putting forth a survey to our membership this month, so please take some time to give us input, if you haven’t already, as to what you look for in membership and what we can do to improve. We are all volunteers ready to do what’s best for the membership at large and your individual feedback is a critical component to that! Thank you to my amazing strategic planning committee: Deirdre Eagles, Allied ASID; Jamie Namanny, Allied ASID; Lori Ettinger, IP; Raad Ghantous, Allied ASID; Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID; Tamra Mundia, Allied ASID and IP; Valarie Mina, ASID; Jennifer Anderson, Allied ASID, Bonnie Traut, Allied ASID; Michele Prata, Allied ASID; Anita Jacobi, IP; Nick Virus, Student ASID and Kasey Sterling, our new Administrator. What a dynamic, committed and caring group of thought leaders! Advocacy Update… On the Legislative front we are continuing with our advocacy efforts, educating the various stakeholders on the significance and importance of interior design as a profession. Thank you to all who wrote letters in opposition of AB-2192. The bill was seriously amended because of the letters of opposition. AB-2192 authorizes local building departments to allow architects to self‐certify building plans for residential improvements. The bill passed but with some amendments (pilot program in three cities, with a five year sunset period, and only for residential plans). To learn more visit the Interior Design Coalition of California’s website at http://www.idc-ca.org/ or read about AB2192 in more detail in the Legislative Update section of this newsletter. Looking forward… In order to execute our strategic plan for next year, I am looking for some fresh faces! I would love to start the new term with a full roster of committee chairs and committee volunteers. If you know you would like to get involved on a deeper level or continue in an existing capacity, please let me know. I’d be happy to explain the various volunteer opportunities to you. They are listed at http://asidocc.org/irvine-interior-design/board-of-directors/committeechairs/. I will be adding a few more as well. There are many ways to volunteer and get involved, big or small, so jump right in! We need you! Sincerely, Gigi Harris, Allied ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President-Elect 2013-2014

SOCO Industry Partner Event On Thursday, May 15, from 6-9pm, ASID-OC members attended a fabulous design event at SOCO Collection in Costa Mesa. SOCO is one of the premier interior design Centers in SoCal - located just off the 405 Freeway. This oneof-a-kind Center is home to numerous landmark retail locations, including Brown Jordan’s first to-the-public location and the largest Design Within Reach showroom in the world.

During the progressive ASID-OC SOCO Collection design event, members kicked-off the evening with champagne and strawberries during a sneak preview of Famosa Tile's new showroom at SOCO. ASIC-OC members were the first to check out the incredible, state-of-the-art showroom that is now open to the public. After Famosa, members walked to The Shade Store for white wine and cheese and perused the latest shades and trends at the first OC Shade Store location.

Then it was off to Brown Jordan for delectable appetizers and wine and a trend presentation from Wendy Rhiger, Brown Jordan's PR and Marketing director. She introduced members to the latest in outdoor trends and what we could expect next from the timeless retailer. Next, members walked to Design Within Reach for delicious Mediterranean appetizers and Prosecco where Curtis Lee, retail manager, gave an overview of DWR's capabilities and offerings. There was also a scavenger hunt at the showroom and a few lucky ASID-OC members won gift cards!

The final stop of the evening was at PIRCH where members had lattes and cheesecake and did a full tour of the interactive showroom. It was a wonderful and exciting evening and we look forward to ongoing events at the SOCO Collection! For more information, please visit www.southcoastcollection.com. Legislative Update Information provided by IDCC, the Interior Design Coalition of California

AB 2192: California Interior Design Organizations Unite in Opposition AB 2192 (Melendez) is a bill sponsored by the AIA California Council, which in its original form allowed for a peer review/self certification system for architectural approval of plans, circumventing the current program approval of plans by local building departments. The peer review system in this bill covered commercial and residential interior design work identified under the CA Architects Practice Act. In summary, the bill allows local agencies to create and implement a program whereby a building permit may be issued upon submission of plans prepared by an architect and reviewed by another unaffiliated architect. This program would only apply to certain types of projects, specifically, those covered in the Business and Professions Code, under section 5537 & 5538, the “exemption” under which residential interior designers practice. The bill targets the types of projects that are exempt from architects’ involvement. It limits the review to architects, so that interior designers would not be included in the program. The consumer could then be lead to believe that if they work directly with an architect; plans would have a faster turn around on permit review. It creates an unfair competitive advantage to architects. It insinuates the architect into the area of the building environment in which one need not be an architect to practice, thus giving them authority over an exempt area of practice, namely that of the residential interior designer. We can foresee that this is a step towards the elimination of that exemption, which has long been the stated goal of the AIA CC. On May 7th the bill was heard in the Assembly Local Government Committee. Because of the strong opposition and advocacy from IDCC, CALBO, CCIDC and others, the bill was headed for its demise. The targeted letter writing campaign was effective, especially since the letters were hand delivered to the members of the committee by the IDCC lobbyists, Capitol Advisors. In fact, we were told by staff that the bill might likely be withdrawn from committee. At the last minute, to save the bill, the author and sponsor agreed to the following amendments that significantly watered down the bill: • Establish the bill as a pilot project for three yet-to-be-named building departments • Limit the peer review for only residential design The bill was heard in a packed hearing room, only allowing witnesses to enter the room when their author was presenting their bills. After we presented we had to exit the room, which resulted in the inability to hear further presentations. The author presented the future amendments as "a compromise", saying three other jurisdictions have successful peer review processes. She stated the bill would not affect other design professionals. There was a good showing of opposition, but it was clear the committee members had been convinced to support the amendments. Because this committee is chaired by a Republican and the author was a Republican, it was clear the bill was likely going to pass out of committee. The bill will next go

to the floor of the Assembly, as it’s marked “non-fiscal”. We will not have an opportunity to influence the bill on the floor, but we will have our best opportunity when the bill is heard in the second house (Senate). We will be working with other opposition groups to strategize and coordinate testimony. A letter campaign targeting constituents of the members of the Senate policy committee will be most effective, especially as the letters are carried to the members by Susan Stuart and staff, our lobbyists. It is clear that the relationships and collegial respect Susan and her staff have throughout the Sacramento legislative community have influence, and work to our benefit. Things move quickly and unexpectedly in Sacramento. We will be communicating with IDCC, IIDA and ASID members to ask for your support in our next campaign.

Bus Tour to Cambria Showroom By LeAnne Tamarabuchi, ASID This year, the Council of Past Presidents decided to raise funds for an Education Scholarship for design students. With the support from the Chapter, a CEU and a day of fun was planned with a bus tour to the Cambria Showroom in Palm Desert. Measuring the fun on a scale of 1 – 10, it was totally off the chart. The day started at the Laguna Design Center‘s Visitor Center with a breakfast reception. Then the fun began as the designers walked up the steps of the fabulous luxury coach. If they had them on, their socks rolled down, mouths dropped and screams of “WOW”! We were in another world, two bars, lively music and a pole for dancing. Colored lights changed from red, green, yellow, blue, lavender and pink under the sofas, ceiling and between the windows. After settling in, a “Quartz Surface” seminar was conducted on the bus by Cambria’s hostesses Celeste Lehmann and Kayla Benning. It was an informative presentation on the attributes, production, benefits and design application of quartz. When we arrived at the Cambria Showroom, we enjoyed a delicious gourmet lunch and toured the showroom with the beautiful vignettes of kitchens, bath and interior spaces utilizing quartz and also a room that showcased large slabs. We visited the new Cambria Showroom in town and were the first to walk into the boutique style showroom before it was opened to the public. The hospitality of Cambria during the entire day was absolutely marvelous. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, friendship, and inspiring design ideas. In addition, each designer had contributed some money towards an Education Scholarship fund.

April General Meeting By Alix Flamm Gramar Stone Center, Inc., in Anaheim, hosted the April 16, 2014, General Meeting. Gramar Stone, Inc., is a family owned business with showrooms and offices locally and Internationally. The evening began with guests roaming the stone and tile showroom getting inspiration from the numerous displays and vignettes. Gramar Stone staff were available to answer any questions. A Mediterranean style dinner was served with meatballs, spanikopita, stuffed grape leaves, lentil patties and salad. Plenty of wine flowed as well. Student Career Day By Barbara Keller, ASID In spite of rain and a very chilly day, students enjoyed a visual and information packed time at our annual Student Career Day on February 27 at the Laguna Design Center. Following a light breakfast provided by Witford, students were greeted by our president, Deirdre Eagles. Then students were placed in groups with an ASID member who served as a guide and answered questions. Students attended 8 different sessions during the day each held in a different showroom. Participating showrooms included Witford, Baker Knapp & Tubbs, Bassman-Blaine, B & C Select, Blake House, Fremarc, Kravet, and Lighting Innovations. Students were able to tour each showroom and then had an informative session at each of the participating showrooms. Students learned about working with a custom workroom, working with contractors, how to sell luxury furnishings and fabrics, specifying lighting and working with sales reps. Students also learned that there are often other options in finishes, sizes, and fabrics besides what they’re seeing on a showroom floor. During lunch, which was provided by Café Fresca, a panel discussion was held. The panel, moderated by David Rance, represented residential, hospitality, and medical office design. Rona Graff and Stephanie Fryer, Grace Blu Designs Inc., talked about their journey from school to partnering and beginning Grace Blu Designs, a boutique residential design firm. Beverly Stadler, Design Focus Inc., shared how she moved from nursing to interior design and her firm’s focus on designing medical offices. Mike Hatch, of Hatch Design Group also shared his background and discussed the variety of hospitality projects his firm works on. The entire panel also shared what they had to learn when starting out, offered great tips for the students and what they looked for when hiring. Students also met in the ASID office with Audrey Duncan, Membership Director. Audrey discussed transitioning from student member to Allied ASID member, the Emerging Professionals group, and the many benefits of belonging to ASID. Following the sessions, students were able to visit other showrooms. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day successful and special thanks to Crystal Prag and the Laguna Design Center which provided the room, tables and chairs, and AV equipment. And, thank you Mother Nature for the sun which came out during the day!

ASID Orange County Trade Show By Maria Deganis For those of you who were unable to attend the ASID 2014 Trade Show, here is a recap of what you missed. We received some wonderful feedback from the designers who attended; they loved the personal attention and interaction with the vendors. The vendor booths looked amazing and many of the attendees commented on how much they enjoyed the creative "swag" they received along with the great information they were taking back to their offices. A few of our student members that attended mentioned that this event was an inspiration for them to continue on in their design careers as it showed

them how many opportunities there are in the industry. We know many designer's libraries will be greatly enhanced by the wonderful products from the show and their new contact with the representatives. We are also thankful to Karen Gavin for giving a wonderful CEU presentation “Colormix 2014” where she spoke about the influences behind the 2014 color forecast followed by "What Does Culture Have to do With Color.” Karen defined the different cultures, the history of cultural effects on color, and the effects of globalization on color and how culture impacts color for the Interior Designer. ASID CA OC would like to thanks all the vendors who participated in this year’s Trade Show.

ASID-OCC 2014 Design Awards Kickoff! By Michele Prata, Chair This year’s ASID-OCC 2014 Design Awards Kick-off was hosted at the Laguna Design Center on May 1st where our generous Industry Partner Cambria sponsored our Kick-off with a red carpet, cocktail party and amazing gourmet buffet. Our media partner, Orange Coast Magazine and Christopher Schultz, and Bill Anderson, of AVD, also hosted a martini/ champagne bar including chocolates for dessert. The Paparazzi captured us upon entering the swanky soiree! This year's ASID-OC Design Awards Kick-off featured a “premiere” of our Cambria sponsored ASID-OCC Design Awards Website. Also new are our Platinum and Gold Winner’s Trophies which will feature Cambria’s quartz bases with an engraved crystal flame! We are going to offer more categories this year with 2 awards per category for more chances to win this year and adding a few more commercial and hospitality categories including a new Cambria category for best use of their product in a space! At least 6 entries per category will be needed to win 2 awards in both Platinum and Gold. We are going to have more opportunities to win and more to offer with our timely and user friendly design awards website launch in the first week of July. We will feature all designer’s awards submissions, as well as the winners in an ongoing gallery feature. Submissions will be open for 1 month before closing for judging, so get ready! Attendees wore their favorite cocktail attire including the “little black dress” and suit and ties for the guys at this year’s Kick-off while enjoying a wide variety of appetizers, wine and dessert. Special Swag Bags by Cambria were offered at the end of the 2 hour soiree from 5:30-7:30pm. The Kick-off was reminiscent of this year's soon to be notable 39th Gala to be celebrated in Old Hollywood Glamour style at the Richard Nixon Library on September 14th from 4 to 8pm!

STUDENT CORNER

Student Rept to the Board Message By Traci Salemme, Student Rep to the Board Spring has sprung! And as the days are starting to get longer and the summer heat begins to show, this is always the time of year I find myself sitting in class and staring out the window a little more than usual. I remember the word we used to use to describe it in high school, “senior’itis," that feeling and point in time were you can’t help but think about all the things you are going to accomplish after you graduate and walk out those school doors one last time. With so many students just a matter of weeks away from finishing their time in design school, I think it is important to take a minute and think about the unique set of skills you are leaving with. Finding a job in the field is naturally the next step so I encourage you to think about ways to find the next opportunity. There is the traditional approach to job-hunting with job boards and Google searches, but I would also encourage you to think about some of the nontraditional methods that ASID can assist you with. NETWORKING: ASID is in an incredible way to start networking and finding opportunities in the field. As a student member you may have attended a meeting or participated at your school level, but I would encourage you to explore more. “Allied Membership” is a great next step in continuing with ASID after your school hours are complete. Advancing to Allied Membership is easy, check out: www.asid.org/content/student-advancement for more information. JOB RESOURCES: Don’t forget that ASID offers a whole host of work experience and resources right at your fingertips. You can post your resume; get helpful hints on creating a portfolio and search for some of the top opportunities available in the job market. Many of these posted jobs are entrylevel positions, so don’t be intimidated, you have the skills! Go to: www.asid.org/careers to start your search!

STAY CONNECTED: There are some great events approaching and another way to connect with professionals while having a great time! Dwell on Design is back and in LA from June 20-22 (http://www.dwellondesign.com/). During that June weekend, the most notable design event of the year is going to be hosted at the Paramount Pictures Studio. The ASID Awards Gala celebrates the best of the best in designers making an impact and is must attend event. To get your tickets go to: www.asid.org/celebration-awards/home Congratulations seniors on a job well done and best of luck on your design career ahead!

Congratulations to our Newly Elected 2014-2015 Student Representative to the Board

Nick Virus, Student ASID Nick Virus currently is in his last year at Westwood College, Anaheim. He will be serving as ASID Orange County’s Student Representative to the Board beginning October 1, 2014. He comes highly recommended and has demonstrated exceptional student leadership in his involvement with ASID on the student level the past couple years. Nick has a construction background and is pursuing interior architecture and design as a second career. He has a heart for service and is involved in other community organizations centered on environmental protection and conservation. We are thrilled to have Nick on our Board for the coming term!

Interior Designer’s Institute By Cynthia Amaral The IDI student chapter board has provided impressive experiences for our student members. With the chapter growing we have many students eager to get involved. Therefore, the board has created opportunities for IDI students to learn and grow in their skill set, but also give back to the design community. With fundraising events planned and field trips on the calendar, we look forward to a busy and productive quarter ahead! First on the calendar, IDI has an amazing event planned for our ASID students. We have secured a custom home in Newport Beach for a private home tour. This is going to be a remarkable and educational experience for the students and is what students are beginning to expect from our board members! Knowhow, much like this, is due to the vivacity and strength found within the motivated student body! Also, over the quarter break, five IDI students participated in The Salvations Army’s Noah’s ARC Fundraiser. They designed a child’s bedroom comprised with goods provided 100% by The Salvation Army. With a little TLC and hard work, these five students successfully transformed old and neglected items into fantastic and desirable pieces. We are proud to announce that these five students, Angelica Olivia, Mariana Chaves, Michelle Wenger, Diana Estrada

NCIDQ Examination U.S. Census Bureau Shows Credentialed Professionals Earn Higher Incomes A recently released U.S. Census Bureau report (1) shows that professional certification provides a path to higher earnings. According to the Bureau's first-ever study of this kind, individuals who have obtained a professional certification, such as the NCIDQ Certification, apart from a post-secondary degree awarded by colleges and universities, earn 21.38% higher pay than those with only an educational certificate and 33.9% more than those people without any alternative credential or educational certificate. "This empirical data provides more support for what we have seen regarding the important role the NCIDQ Certification plays in differentiating the most competent and qualified interior designers from their non-certified counterparts," says Dr. Carol Williams-Nickelson, executive director for the Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc. (CIDQ) which oversees the development and administration of the NCIDQ Examination. "Our mission of protecting the public by identifying and then testing an appropriately educated and experienced interior designer's competencies in health, safety and public welfare is at the forefront in all of our test development and certification activities. There are strong, longstanding trends suggesting that people who hire interior designers seek out those who are NCIDQ Certified and are willing to pay more for that quality assurance."

There are countless other benefits to the NCIDQ Certification. "Interior Designers spend many years earning their degrees, engaging in intensive supervised experience, and preparing for the rigorous three-part NCIDQ Examination, which tests their knowledge in design fundamentals, professional practice, and a wide range of competencies in code-based practices" adds Victoria Horobin, ARIDO, IDC, NCIDQ, President of CIDQ and the NCIDQ Examination Board of Directors. "Passing the NCIDQ Examination is a monumental accomplishment. For the interior designer, it confirms that she or he has what it takes to deliver high quality services and identifies them as a practitioner who has the competencies to create interior spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and safe, therefore protecting public health, safety and welfare." The NCIDQ Certification is not only a source of pride, recognition and competency. Now, thanks to the results of the U.S. Census Bureau's study, there is a growing body of evidence lending support for what we have seen over the past forty-years since the NCIDQ Examination has existed. That is, as a whole, interior designers who hold the NCIDQ Certification have set their careers on a course that can result in earning more money.

You will need to first apply to take the NCIDQ Exam section(s) you are eligible to take and then register for the eligible sections you wish to take in each administration cycle. The application deadline is June 1 for the fall administration of all three test sections and December 1 for the spring administration for all three test sections. If you are applying for the IDFX section only, those deadlines are August 1 for the fall test administration, and February 1 for the spring administration. Noah’s Arc Celebrates its 5th Year! By Traci Salemme, Student Rep to the Board ASID OCC

The Noah’s Arc Interior Design Challenge just wrapped on it’s 5th year of combining and celebrating the work of the Salvation Army with the talents of our ASID student members. This year three participating Salvation Army stores paired up with student teams from three of our local design schools. Over the course of six weeks these students selected items from the donation warehouse, built,

Best Display – Team Westwood Maricris Abril, Nick Virus, Andrea Lopez & Greg Pope, along with Jess Pevey (not pictured).

Best Representation of a Genre – Team Interior Designer’s Institute Michelle Wenger, Susan Malecki, Angelica Olivia & Diana Estrada, along with Mariana Chaves (not pictured).

Best Design Board – Team Art Institute Sylvia Garcia, Stephanie Sandoval & Roy Frey

Winner for best display – Team Westwood

repurposed, designed and debuted 12x12 vignettes completely furnished by donated materials. These vignettes’ were then put on display at local stores were they were judged and individual items inside were auctioned off to benefit the 175 men and women participating in the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). ARC provides a no-fee drug and alcohol addiction program for its participants and is an incredible organization helping those in recovery gain hope for a fresh start!

The event concluded with an awards celebration and also the very exciting news that every single item in each vignette was sold, totaling over $3000 in funds raised!

The following awards were given to each team: Best Display – Team Westwood Best Representation of a Genre – Team Interior Designer’s Institute Best Design Board – Team Art Institute Winner for best display – Team Westwood

All of us at ASID OC and the Salvation Army were more than impressed with this year’s level of talent and creativity. Watching these items be transformed and come together in such unique and clever way was truly inspiring. I have to give special thanks to Danny Hauger, Community Relations Manager and his team at the Salvation Army, including Major John Reed, Major Kathy Reed for hosting, Kim and Larry for their testimonials, and the Anaheim ARC Advisory Council. I also want to thank the three participating Salvation Army stores in Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Westwood for their store space; and lastly, to Sherwin-Williams for the donated paint and our judges Deirdre Eagles and Valarie Mina from ASID Orange County.

These amendments: • Establish the bill as a pilot project for three yet-to-be-named building departments • Limit the peer review for only residential design The bill will be heard as amended on Second Reading (information) on Tuesday May 27 and Third Reading (hearing) on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; May 28, 29 or 30. IDCC’s lobbyist, Capitol Advisors, will provide us with up to the minute notification on the bill’s progress and status. We’ll keep our website updated. To watch live coverage of the hearings click on this link CALCHANNEL.COM. Find the scheduled time for the hearing then click “LIVE WEBCAST” tab at the appropriate time. Our best opportunity to influence the bill will be when it is heard in the Senate. IDCC will be working with our lobbyists and other opposing groups such as CCIDC and CALBO to strategize and coordinate testimony. At that time, we may be calling on you to help with a targeted letter campaign to members of the Senate policy committee. We will alert you when letters are needed and provide a template and instructions.

AB 2192 (Melendez) is a bill sponsored by the AIA California Council, which in its original form allowed for a peer review/self-certification system for architectural approval of plans, circumventing the current program approval of plans by local building departments. The peer review system in this bill covers commercial and residential interior design work identified under the CA Architects Practice Act. The proposed legislation would have the effect of eliminating existing exemptions that allow non-licensed architects, designers and engineers to design and submit building plans for nonstructural and non-seismic construction permits

•AB 2192 sets up a building plan “peer review” process that excludes all design professionals other than architects. • AB 2192 will cause confusion for the consumer by leading consumers to believe architects are more qualified because they can provide a more expedited permit review. • The majority of residential interior design work is done by professionals other than architects. • California would be the first state to consider the implementation of a peer review process. This bill is a solution in search of a problem.
