BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Deirdre Eagles, Allied ASID 714-803-4784 President@asidocc.org
Dear Members,
It's hard to believe almost a year has passed since I took office as President of ASID Orange County Chapter. It has been a whirlwind of activity as we accomplished a lot and even managed to have a bit of fun along the

way. I could not have made it without the wonderful people who were beside me throughout the year. So, this column is dedicated to all of you--my Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, Office Administrator and Members, who dedicated your time, energy and hearts to the 2013/2014 fiscal year.
First of all, I want thank the members of this Chapter who attended and participated in the wonderful programs that the Chapter offered. Truth be told, we would be nothing without the active participation and attendance from our membership. I am happy to say that we had some of the highest attended General

I also want to thank the Industry Partners who stepped up and hosted a General Meeting, including

Student Career Day, and Emerging Professional Events.
We also launched a few new events this year. In November, we held the Tommy Bahama Holiday Table Top Event. This was followed by our Holiday Luncheon in December and Wine & Design in June, both

held at the Laguna Design Center. I recognize the tremendous amount of effort that went into planning and executing these successful events and want to thank all who were involved.
Finally, to my Board of Directors; Gigi, Val, Bonnie, Jennifer, Audrey, Marjan and Traci. Thank you for Student Representative Traci Salemme, Student ASID 509-551-1767 StudentRep@asidocc.org Office Administrator Kasey Sterling 949-643-1549 asid.oc@sbcglobal.net

Dear Colleagues,
It is with excitement that I step into my role as your President for the 2014-2015 fiscal year to commence on October 1st. I hope you will join me in thanking Deirdre Eagles for all her efforts and leadership this year as President. It has been a tremendous honor to mentor under her leadership. The momentum she has built and enthusiasm that she has generated is the fuel we needed as a chapter to keep moving in the positive direction we are heading. Business is picking up for all and we are seeing many new faces (as well as welcoming back many faces we haven’t seen in a while) at our events, a promising indicator for the road ahead.
This past June the new ASID OC Board of Directors and I attended our national leadership conference in Los Angeles as part of Dwell. ASID National shared their new strategic direction with Chapter leaders from across the nation. I happily embrace the goals and focus set forth by our Society; and have created a strategic plan with the help of an amazing committee of your peers that mirrors that of National’s. A few of our initiatives this year: we strive to engage our members who practice commercial and hospitality design, as well as add more Industry Partner members whose products and services focus on this segment of our industry; Students and Emerging Professionals (those practitioners in their first five years of business) continue to be an important part of our future and our chapter will create programs that will engage our members in these categories through mentorship, educational topics and various fun networking events. We will give back to the community through a charity that we are in the process of creating a partnership with…stay tuned for more exciting details! Our Industry Partners are an important part of our organization. We are continually looking for ways to take your input and develop events and promotional opportunities focused on creating value for you, our industry partner members.
Your new leadership team is a committed one. The buzz coming out of months of strategic planning is an exciting one that I hope you will take action, engage and be a part of! If you have been sitting back and evaluating the true value of our organization for yourselves and your companies, I encourage and welcome you to be a part of the change and get involved! The adage “You get out of something what you put into it” still holds true. Now entering my sixth consecutive year on the Board of Directors of ASID Orange County, I have seen our chapter go through a series of ups and downs. I truly love this organization and am proud to be a part of the upswing once again. Will you join me?
Sincerely,
Gigi Harris, Allied ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President-Elect 2013-2014

Interior Design Coalition of California Annual Meeting On August 9, 2014 the Interior Design Coalition of California (IDCC) held their annual meeting in the ASID Orange County office at the Laguna Design Center. The meeting was very well attended by members of California ASID and IIDA chapters; Don Davis, Vice President, Government and Public Affairs, ASID; William Dessert, Specialist, Government and Public Affairs, ASID; Susanne Molina, Vice President IIDA; Susan Stuart, Partner, Capitol Advisors and Erin Evans-Fudem, Legislative Counsel, Capitol Advisors, IDCC’s lobbyists. Outgoing IDCC President Katherine Fern reported on the many significant achievements of the Coalition this past year, including developing alliances with many interior design organizations as we worked to achieve common goals; successful outreach and education efforts to building officials, legislators and community college representatives; the enactment of SB 308 that extended the CID law until 2018 with added provisions; and the defeat of AB 2192, which would have allowed for Architects to implement a peer review system for plan approval, specifically for residential design.
A lively and informative question and answer session followed that included many suggestions from the attendees for new alliances. Nicole Rosetti, IIDA, was welcomed to the Board as Director-at-Large. Michel Dory, Allied ASID was also welcomed to the Communications team. In closing, Katherine Fern, who is leaving California, passed the torch to Patricia K. Weiss, IDCC’s new President. Katherine’sdedicated efforts resulted in a year of significant accomplishment for IDCC. We are alldeeply appreciative and know that she will remain involved as a strong advocate for the profession. The IDCC Board is delighted to have Patricia returning to the Board and we look forward to her strong guidance and leadership. The Interior Design Coalition of Californiaseeks the legal recognition of the professional practice of interior design in the state of California. Through collaboration, education and advocacy, IDCC strives to present a unified voice for the California interior design community to support and protect the profession of interior design. Please visit our websitewww.idc-ca.org to become a member and to learn more about how our efforts affect your profession.
Ongoing goals were also outlined that include obtaining uniform acceptance statewide of the CID stamp; the continued strengthening of collaborative alliances with other stakeholders and organizations; reinstatement of the NCIDQ as an alternative to the IDEX for certification; legal recognition of the profession of interior design; and continued vigilance for proposed legislation that could affect our right to practice. Don Davis spoke about National efforts and recent legislative success in Massachusetts. He also explained the need to remain vigilant for proposed legislation similar to AB 2192. Also stressed was the fact that with new energy codes, nationally and in California (changes to Title 24 and the adoption of the CalGreen Building Code), all interior design work is becoming codeimpacted work and legal recognition will be even more important to all interior designers. Susan Stuart congratulated the Coalition on the success of the grass roots effort in defeating AB 2192 and discussed outlining goals for the Coalition going forward.
The IDCC Annual meeting was well attended by ASID and IIDA chapter members.
Susanne Molina discussed IIDA’s position on legislation, outreach efforts to expand awareness and understanding of the interior design professional, and the importance of the NCIDQ exam.
Susan Stuart, Partner, Capitol Advisors spoke about lobbying efforts on behalf of IDCC.

By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID Who knew that a slab yard could become such a delightful location for a summer luncheon? Linnea Graves, Daltile Showroom Manager, transformed the Anaheim stone and slab yard into a charming, sunny bistro, accented with a backdrop of exquisite marble and granite slabs from their vast inventory. Designers were treated to a delectable array of sandwiches and salads while learning all there is to know about selecting, fabricating and maintaining various stones. Max Aschoff, Slab Yard Manager at Daltile, thoroughly explained the ins and outs of the entire experience when purchasing and installing stone, including setting client expectations, using templates to map out the layouts, special considerations for different types of stones, communicating with fabricators, and proper care and maintenance. Following his presentation, we had the opportunity to walk the yard with expert fabricators and gain valuable insight about the fabrication and installation process, as well as varying properties that are inherent with different types of stone. Designers walked away with a full toolbox of knowledge to employ when choosing stone for their next design projects. If you are an Industry Partner and would like to participate in our Lunch and Learn program, please contact me at cynthia@prizantdesign.com for pricing information and an application packet.

If a client has a painting or artwork they love, it can make a wonderful starting point of inspiration. Room design is the sum total of all its elements. No matter what style a client wants, bringing something in that is distinct and artful gives the space character.” says Alix Flamm, Allied ASID

NCIDQ Examination U.S. CENSUS BUREAU SHOWS CREDENTIALED PROFESSIONALS EARN HIGHER INCOMES A recently released U.S. Census Bureau report (1) shows that professional certification provides a path to higher earnings. According to the Bureau's first-ever study of this kind, individuals who have obtained a professional certification, such as the NCIDQ Certification, apart from a post-secondary degree awarded by colleges and universities, earn 21.38% higher pay than those with only an educational certificate and 33.9% more than those people without any alternative credential or educational certificate. "This empirical data provides more support for what we have seen regarding the important role the NCIDQ Certification plays in differentiating the most competent and qualified interior designers from their non-certified counterparts," says Dr. Carol Williams-Nickelson, executive director for the Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc. (CIDQ) which oversees the development and administration of the NCIDQ Examination. "Our mission of protecting the public by identifying and then testing an appropriately educated and experienced interior designer's competencies in health, safety and public welfare is at the forefront in all of our test development and certification activities. There are strong, longstanding trends suggesting that people who hire interior designers seek out those who are NCIDQ Certified and are willing to pay more for that quality assurance." There are countless other benefits to the NCIDQ Certification. "Interior Designers spend many years earning their degrees, engaging in intensive supervised experience, and preparing for the rigorous three-part NCIDQ Examination, which tests their knowledge in design fundamentals, professional practice, and a wide range of competencies in code-based practices" adds Victoria Horobin, ARIDO, IDC, NCIDQ, President of CIDQ and the NCIDQ Examination Board of Directors. "Passing the NCIDQ Examination is a monumental accomplishment. For the interior designer, it confirms that she or he has what it takes to deliver high quality services and identifies them as a practitioner who has the competencies to create interior spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and safe, therefore protecting public health, safety and welfare." The NCIDQ Certification is not only a source of pride, recognition and competency. Now, thanks to the results of the U.S. Census Bureau's study, there is a growing body of evidence lending support for what we have seen over the past forty-years since the NCIDQ Examination has existed. That is, as a whole, interior designers who hold the NCIDQ Certification have set their careers on a course that can result in earning more money.
NCIDQ EXAM JUN 1
You should be aware of two NCIDQ Examination deadlines: the application deadline and the registration deadline. You will need to first apply to take the NCIDQ Exam section(s) you are eligible to take and then register for the eligible sections you wish to take in each administration cycle. The application deadline is June 1 for the fall administration of all three test sections and December 1 for the spring administration for all three test sections. If you are applying for the IDFX section only, those deadlines are August 1 for the fall test administration, and February 1 for the spring administration. If NCIDQ receives your supporting documents package after the current application deadline, we will consider your application for the next exam cycle.

Onstage, Burks unveiled the American version of The Traveler, a chair he designed in collaboration withRoche Bobois. The chair has a wooden frame-as opposed to the steel-framed European version--and upholstery meant "to mimic the posture of the body," Burks says. "We're all workaholics, so this American chair is about really relaxing--working hard and relaxing hard." The collaboration, which Burks embarked on with the French furniture brand about one year ago, is "a dialogue between two different cultures, and every culture in between," he says.

Student Rep to the Board Message By Traci Salemme, Student Rep to the Board Wow, I can’t believe a year has gone by and my term as your Student Representative to the Board is coming to a close. This year has brought with it so many exciting things both in my personal, school and career life, and also as a member of this dynamic ASID chapter board. This is the year… we hosted another incredible Student Career Day at the Laguna Design Center. A student favorite, this event introduced nearly 100 students to the field of interior design with hands on experiences. With an expert panel for our Q&A session, many students are still buzzing about the valuable information learned from that day. This is the year… the 5th Annual Noah’s Arc Design Challenge took place, benefiting the Salvation Army of Orange County. With participants from each of the different Orange County schools, this year we saw some of the most thoughtful and creative designed rooms the event as ever seen. We also had, for the first time in the events history, every item auctioned and purchased from each of the school’s vignettes. It was an inspiring event for all that were involved and I am so thankful to have been a part of it!
This is the year… I graduated from the Interior Designer Institute with my Associated Arts degree. I had always known that I wanted to go back to school
and pursue a lingering passion for interior design, and I am so glad I did. IDI continues to be an amazing place to truly turn a passion into a reality, and am so thankful for the professors and fellow classmates I have met along the way. Graduation was a great way to conclude the school year, and I was honored to receive the Eileen Gray Award and have the opportunity to speak at our graduation. This is the year… I got engaged! I mention this because without the support of my finance, family and friends this year would not have been possible. I am so grateful to have such a solid support system behind me and keeping me motivated and inspired every step of the way. I also could not have Nima Mortazavi & Traci done this year without the support of my Salemme, Student ASID fellow board members! I have gained valuable insight from each of them and know I could call on them as my mentor and friend. This is the year… of amazing memories and experiences and I am so excited to see what the next one will bring!
Interior Designer’s Institute Interior Designers Institute held commencement exercises for its 30th graduating class on June 19th. This amazing group of graduates celebrated their accomplishments amongst family, friends and faculty. We look forward to hearing about their notable careers and accomplishments in years to come.
Board Award for 2014. The IDI student chapter has many impressive experiences planned for our student members. With the student chapter growing and the students thrilled about future events, it should be an exciting few months!
Four IDI students participated in The Salvations Army’s Noah’s ARC Fundraiser. They designed a child’s bedroom comprised with goods provided 100% by The Salvation Army. With a little TLC and hard work, these five students successfully transformed old and neglected items into fantastic and desirable pieces. We are proud to announce that these five students, Michelle Wenger, Susan Maleki, Angelica Oliva, Diana Estrada, Mariana Antunes won Noah’s ARC Best AA Grad Class 2014

Westwood College The ASID student chapter at Westwood College participated in an exciting event sponsored by the Orange County Chapter on June 18th 2014. It was a great event that led to other opportunities in the industry. Nick Virus and Alicia Ho, senior Interior Design students helped with the Wine & Design at the Laguna Design center. Both Nick and Alicia utilized items from their assigned showrooms; Exquisite Surfaces and Gina B & Company. They also incorporated their own individual designs to create a display. Alicia has created her own line of products – Loral and Stag. Nick’s line is Turner Dean custom design products. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to work with professionals in their industry and market their own products and designs. In July the student board hosted a lunch and learn for the students. The event generated interest in the organization and they were even able to raffle off a membership to a student in attendance!
