Happy New Year! The holidays are over and now it’s back to reality. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to promote your business this year, your ASID chapter has several opportunities for you to consider:
First up is our newest project, ‘One Room 12 Ways’, which we are presenting in partnership with Stonemill Design Center and Modern Luxury Interiors Magazine. Imagine a little black dress and all the ways you could accessorize it. That’s the concept behind One Room. Twelve different designers will design the same room in 12 completely different ways using a few required pieces. This is a year-long project giving designers online and print exposure and the opportunity to win a full-page ad in Modern Luxury Interiors Magazine.
In May, we will also present again the highly successful Chairs for Charity, benefiting Ronald McDonald House for our second year of remodeling. And finally, everyone’s favorite event: Wine and Design in the month of June.
The best part of these projects is that they are affordable to participate in, provide exposure to the public for our designers, and allow for designer outreach to demonstrate and educate the public on the skills and talents of ASID members.
These marketing opportunities are amongst the benefits of your ASID membership as they are only open to ASID members. So we will look forward to your participation and support.
We’re back on track for making Expo the prime marketing opportunity for our Industry Partners. This year is our 25th year and promises to be our most successful in a long while. Once again it will be at the Hotel Irvine and will incorporate all the elements that have made our expo the best in Southern California: great location, delicious food, a CEU, and wonderful companies displaying their products and services. Come join the party there on June 10.
We also have many CEU meetings, Lunch & Learn sessions, and some really fun fundraisers coming up throughout the year.
So let this be the year you try out all that ASID has to offer. You know the old saying, “You only get out of something what you put in”… Need I say more?
See you in 2016!

Holiday Party
ANNUAL
Andrew Stoermer, Marielle Stoermer, Holiday Party Guest, Keith McDowellSatya, Soli Besharat BJ Petersen, Kathy Booker, Adriel Cogdal, Jamie Namanny, Marjan Bastani By Sue Rexroth, Holiday Party Chair The annual Holiday Party for the ASID-OC General Meeting was hosted by Soli Architectural Surfaces on December 16, 2015, at their stunning new showroom in Lake Forest. The evening began with a spread of delicious hors d'oeuvres along with a wine bar and festive holiday punch. ASID members and guests were treated to an amazing holiday spread with all the trimmings and fabulous dessert trays. Working Wardrobe, the chosen charity for the event, provided a "pop-up" shop set up in a scaled-down version of one of their consignment "designer" boutiques, with high-end items for purchase. They also sponsored a raffle prize of a premium bottle of tequila, won by Char Cowan of Canvas Interior Design. The event raised over $500 for the charity. Many additional raffle prizes were won by those in attendance, including five $500 gift certificates for Soli Architectural products. Special thank you's go out to Soli Besharat, owner and founder of the company, and Keith McDowell-Satya and his team for a fabulous and memorable holiday event! The lucky raffle prize winners

ASID OC 1st Annual Costume Ball By Carolyn Scroggs, Allied ASID, Chair of Costume Ball 2015
Solar Shading Systems/ Vision Art sponsored our seasonally-themed dessert trays. Cambria hosted their quartz bar tables and fellow designer Alicia Ho decorated them with hand spun mesh ghosts.
Our 1st Annual ASID OC Costume Ball was successfully hosted on October 30th, 2015, at the Lutron Experience Center in Irvine, which was decorated as a Haunt-ed House with plenty of ghosts, ghouls and goblins in several spooky vignettes throughout the showroom! Special thanks go to the showroom manager June Marchigiani and her crew for decorating beyond our expectations for some sea-sonal fun.
Guests attended both in full costumes and as themselves as they ate, drank and danced away the evening against a backdrop of film noir monster movies and a glow-in-the-dark setting! It was a spooktacular event not to be missed, and will be hosted again next year at the same venue.
Our buffet tables consisted of over 13 Mediterranean fusion delights that were especially prepared by fellow designer “Chef ” Muna Darwazeh and sponsored by both Cambria and Style Bath Enclosures. Our wine and beverage bar was co-sponsored by Total Light Control and fellow designer Angela Eason.
A special thanks to our generous host, sponsors, and raffle prize donors, including The Plexi Gallery, Loral & Stag, Pirch, Décor and Design Center, and Western Elec-tronics. Lastly, we would like to thank Richard Peralta of Hafele America for providing photography of our event.

The Case for Advocacy Standing Up for Our Profession By ASID San Diego Design Magazine staff AS INTERIOR DESIGNERS, WE ADVOCATE every day for our clients. We negotiate scheduling, oversee production, inspect for quality and manage projects for accuracy. These aspects of our business go hand-in-hand with our creative endeavors, right? However, do we advocate for ourselves as professionals? And what does that mean anyway? Good grief, is this another article about legislation? The term “legislation” has been used and abused over time as a catch-all for what goes on in Sacramento. It either incites a riot or more often induces a comatose state for interior designers. When we hear that word we say, “Let’s just have someone else who knows what they’re doing do that,” or “How can I make a difference in the grand scheme of things?” and we cry, “It’s just too overwhelming, and I don’t understand the language.” But wait, aren’t we the ones who are best qualified to advocate for ourselves and our profession? It’s time to shift from a catch-all word like legislation to a more realistic and meaningful word— and that word is “advocacy.” Advocacy is about publicly supporting a cause or policy. Surely we can do that.

We have a dynamic coalition that includes the Interior Design Coalition of California (IDCC) and our lobbyist, and both organizations are always advocating for us by watching out for our interests in the legislature. And guess what? The governing board of IDCC are all interior designers just like us. Ask anyone who has walked the halls at our state capital and you will hear how much this group has impacted legislators. It was interesting for me to learn how the process works and how valuable connections at the state level can be. I recently learned about a specific bill that was defeated at Assembly by the IDCC that would have had an enormously detrimental effect on the way we do business. The professionals of IDCC did this by uniting all the interior design groups that previously held differences of opinions to work together with our lobbyist and defeat this bill before it made it to the Senate. Don’t you think it is important to support IDCC through participation, membership or donations as they advocate for us while we’re working? Check out their website at www.idcca.org and you’ll be impressed at what ASID and IIDA have been doing for us and our profession. Commercial interior design is already heavily impacted with building codes. They are becoming denser and more restrictive and are spilling over into the residential arena. We’re expected to know the California Building Codes as they apply to each different project, such as Title 24 and ADA requirements, the CalGreen Code and the California Residential Code. Yet, interior designers are the only professionals in the design and construction team build environment that are not licensed in our state. So here we are, full of knowledge and not recognized as competent, even though we are involved with planning all building projects in residential and commercial arenas. What’s wrong with this picture? Educated and experienced designers in our industry need to accept the challenge that we face. We all need to decide if this pursuit is a hobby or a career. Are we going to advocate to protect our rights in the work environment or let someone else make those decisions for us? It’s up to us to continue the efforts that have brought us this far and work together with IDCC to build up our profession so that it continues to exceeds our expectations.

Our CEU presentation for the evening was delivered by Brian Lerkins, the Business Development Manager for Victoria + Albert Baths. His talk on Minimal Space Design highlighted how human factors affect the design world, and helped us to understand the code considerations that shape the design within a minimal space. During networking, members played Do You Know Bingo, which provided fun facts about the new ASID Board and Chairs. After matching the proper fact to the correct person, members entered their Bingo card for a chance to win one of the wonderful raffle prizes, including the Grand Prize donated by Victoria + Albert Baths which was a cast iron vessel sink. Other prizes included His and Hers toweling robes, a cookbook with salt block, as well as luxurious reed diffusers and candles.

While there have been some setbacks in the rehabilitation, we are now making great progress and looking forward to seeing the first pieces of the space completed.
Thank you to Pirch for their warm hospitality and making the first General Meeting with our new Board such a success.
November General Meeting By Lauri Howell, Allied ASID 2015-2016 Programs Chair November marks our annual Membership Drive, which provides the opportunity for members to make new connections, as well as invite those within the industry to learn about the benefits of being a part of ASID. For the second year in a row, Daltile hosted our Membership Drive and General Meeting, in conjunction with Sherwin Williams as they unveiled their Color Mix for 2016. Daltile’s Showroom Manager Linnea Graves pulled out all the stops this year to create a successful event. From delicious tapas provided by Taste Catering Café in Lake Forest, to a multitude of raffle prizes presented at the end of the evening, all in attendance felt Linnea’s gracious hospitality. President Jamie Namanny issued opening statements to an audience of over 300 in the slab yard, while Membership Director, Michele Prata, and Membership Chair Nick Verus highlighted what ASID has to offer and the benefits of membership.

Karen Galvin of Sherwin Williams presented their Color Mix 2016. With four fun color stories and inspirations, the
colors of 2016 came alive. In what Sherwin Williams deems a “passionate pursuit of shared color consciousness,” their trends for the coming year ranged from beautiful soft neutrals to upbeat pops of saturated color, and a little of everything in between. Taking their cues from vintage workmanship, technology, and social settings, Sherwin Williams team - Tom, Karen Galvin, Rocky this color grouping is one that anyone can find their favorite palette within. Closing out this wonderful presentation was a great raffle with wonderful prizes, including a $100 gift certificate to South Coast Plaza donated by Cepac Tile, a $100 gift card donated by C&M Design, $100 gift certificate to Fleming’s donated by Marcato, a lovely West Elm Vase and Gift Certificate donated by Sicis, a $100 gift card donated by Stone Products Unlimited, and several fun fall accessories provided by Daltile. Lunch & Learn By Jill Winstead 2016 Lunch & Learn Chair Pacific Landmark hosted ASID-OC on November 10, 2015, for a fun, networking mixer. All three owners, brothers Abby, Ali, and Ray Hashemi, were there to greet designers and familiarize us with their 20+ year-old business, which occupies a block-long showroom and working facility near downtown historic Santa Ana. Also on-hand were their staff and vendors to share with us the many services they provide to the design community. Pacific Landmark specializes in tile, stone, wood, flooring, and cabinetry, as well as quick turn-around fabrication and installation services for those products. They strive to obtain what their clients want, as conveyed by showroom manager Wendy Robinson: “If we don’t have it, we will get it for you”. Designers were treated to tours and demonstrations of Pacific Landmark’s custom cabinetry fabrication center and their stone-cutting shop – all co-located next to their beautifully updated showroom, where designers can meet with their clients and make selections. Throughout the event, guests enjoyed a sumptuous array of hors d’oeuvres, desserts, wine, tea and coffee. There was a raffle for a beautiful fall gift basket filled with wine, glasses, and a Cambria cheese board, among other goodies. In addition, all designers present were given a $100 gift certificate for use at Pacific Landmark. The evening was quite a success and put Pacific Landmark high up on everyone’s radar.
ASID iDOD By Farrah Smith, Allied ASID In early December 2015, iDOD members gathered at the B & C Select showroom in the Laguna Design Center. Our hosts, Rebecca and Bruce Whiteleather, provided a gourmet buffet, festive beverages and fabulous deserts! Bruce gave a very informative talk about what makes B & C standout in this competitive environment. After practicing our “elevator speeches” (the subject of an entire previous iDOD meeting), we enjoyed a panel discussion covering a variety of topics. Our panelists were Beverly Stadler, Adriel Codgal and Tamra Mundia, with Abby Menhenett as moderator. Each designer started by sharing their unique story of how they came to this profession. From there, we went on to cover a variety of topics from fees, working with contractors, marketing and ending with real world advice.

STUDENT CORNER
From Blueprints to Reality By Paige Svehlak, ASID Student Member, Saddleback The U.S. Dept. of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015 entry Team Orange County, led by University of California, Irvine with Chapman University, Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College, debuted their cost effective, energy efficient, and attractive home, Casa del Sol, from October 8th to the 18th at the Great Park, Irvine CA. Inspired by the California state flower, the golden poppy, their home – Casa del Sol – uses four core principles in design: 1. Embrace the sun and prevailing winds 2. Use innovative technology to compliment this design by pushing the limits of energy efficiency 3. Indoor/outdoor spaces and multigenerational living that appeals to the Southern California market 4. Well adapted to the changing Southwestern climate with drought resilient infrastructure and a drought tolerant, edible landscape. The two-year process included meeting several deliverables including building documentation, audio visual presentations and a comprehensive 500 page project manual outlining every aspect of the home and its’ intent to mitigate the realities of a changing, more extreme climate while displaying solutions for the residential market and educating the community. Not to mention, actually constructing and building the home in less than two months and then moving the modules to the Great Park and putting it back together in a matter of nine days! Paige Svehlak, ASID student member and student of Interior Design Certification program at Saddleback College represented Team OC as Head of Interior Design, Project Coordination and Construction Management of Casa del Sol. She states “the intensity and stress of finishing the home and then competing in this amount of time was overwhelming but totally worth all of the lack of sleep and late nights. Participating in this project and worldwide competition really pushes students to their fullest potential, which prepares us for our potentially professional careers in STEM and clean tech energy.”
Kickoff Meeting By Kellie Davis, Student Rep to the Board
With the help and guidance from Paige’s mentors, Sandy Phoxay (AFI) and Josie Truong, she was able to create a custom collection, made especially for Casa del Sol and work with industry partners including E.B. Bradley Co., Wilsonart, Kravet, Phillips Collection, Blum, Stone Source and Cerno Lighting to make her ideas become reality. In addition, Svehlak was also able to utilize and design a state of the art DC-DC Lighting plan that not only maximizes the building envelopes wattage but also renders perfect light to its’ users. Svehlak says, “it has been a wonderful learning experience being able to work with many professionals in the industry such as Gensler, LPA, The Irvine Company, SoCal Edison and Aspects Furniture Manufacturing Inc.” She continues, “I mean, at 24 years old who gets the opportunity to design, build, and operate a sustainable futuristic home? This was an opportunity of a lifetime that has allowed me to explore and develop into the designer I hope to become. I am now 100% certain that my focus in Interior Design will be in sustainability, clean tech energy, and LED lighting solutions. As I am finishing the last semester of the certification program at Saddleback, I am so excited to think that this is only the beginning of my journey in the design world.” For more details about Casa del Sol and the competition, please visit: http://www.solardecathlon.gov/2015/competition-team-orange-county.html
Wahoo’s November 17th, Wing Lam, owner of Wahoo’s Fish Taco came to IDI to as a guest speaker. He shared his personal life lessons and the key to his success. Wing started by telling us his story, where and how he started. He provided a service to people that didn't have any to begin with. Twenty-six years ago, competition looked a little different. It looked more like a soggy peanut butter & jelly wonder bread sandwich after a day of surfing, versus a fresh, hot fish taco. Wing seized the opportunity and stole the surfing market. He made sure he had a presence in all the surfing competitions in Southern California before he conquered the ski slopes, and eventually the skateboard parks. Through his hard work and dedication, today Wahoo’s Fish Taco has 65 stores, including international locations. As interior designers, we too face a similar scenario. How do we stand apart from our competition? How do we brand ourselves? In a fierce and competitive world, how can we make our future clients or prospective employers choose us? We need to market and eventually brand ourselves as the fresh, hot fish taco!
On November 3rd, Kellie visited IDI to kick off the ASID Student Chapter year. She informed students Photo by Richard Peralta, Hafele America Co. (Industry Partner) about the benefits and importance of joining ASID as a student. The talk was interactive and informative. Membership forms were passed out, and sign up was a huge success! We’re off to a great start!
