“A growth mindset … thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of un-intelligence but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.” -Drake Baer, Business Insider This excerpt taken from an article I recently read on raising successful children distinguishes between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. I think the same distinction applies to how your current ASID Orange County board of directors, committee chairs and committee members have tackled this year. I look at the period of recession that we are finally unburdened from as a time that challenged us all in one way or another. It gave us an opportunity to reevaluate all that works and make improvements to those areas that need attention. I am amazed every day at the commitment of our volunteers, who ensure that our Chapter is continually improving and growing. We have had many successful events since the beginning of our term in October and I believe it is due to the collective dedication of our chapter members. Thank you to all our members for your part in our chapter programs, whether you are a sponsoring industry partner, a volunteer on the event team or an attending member. It takes all of us to make a program successful! Still so much to accomplish With summer upon us, we still have many exciting and key events on the horizon, such as: Wine & Design, our Orange County Ronald McDonald House renovation project (Labor of Love 2), the Design Awards and our Annual Meeting, Installation & Gala. There is still time for you to get involved, so please reach out and let us know what part you want to play in our upcoming projects and events. There’s a place for everyone to participate! Transition ahead With the arrival of summer also comes the beginning of our leadership team transition. Our President Elect Jamie Namanny has already begun her strategic planning process for her term as President, which begins October 1st. I want to congratulate her newly elected board members Adriel Cogdal, ASID (President Elect Elect), Shala Shamardi, Allied ASID (Financial Director), and Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID (Professional Development Director) who will join existing board members Michele Prata, Allied ASID (Membership Director), Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID (Communications Director) and Anita Jacobi, Industry Partner rep for Judy’s Custom Workroom (At-Large Director). What a dynamic group this is! Open Communication On a personal note, thank you to all of you who have reached out to me with your words of encouragement, positive messages and continued feedback on how we as a chapter have improved and can continue to improve. It is this open communication that makes it possible for us to gauge how we are doing and where we still need to focus. Change is constant. Our ability to be flexible, adapt and stretch our existing abilities will ensure the longevity and relevance of ASID Orange County. Rest assured our members are our number one priority. I hope you will continue to show up and reap the value of your membership investment. I look forward to seeing you at our next event! Warm regards, Gigi Harris, Allied ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President 2014-2015

Dear Chapter members,
Spring is here now and we are enjoying beautiful weather as I write this message. My term as President Elect has been very exciting, observing all the events being planned on your behalf by the dedicated and talented Chairs. You have already experienced or heard about our popular General Meetings, Student Career Day, IP Forums, iDOD meetings, 2015 ASID OC's Expo "Re-Imagined," and Chairs for Charity. There is something for everyone. We are looking forward to upcoming events, such as Wine & Design, the Design Awards and the Gala. Our Chapter's community service this year and next year is the Ronald McDonald House in Orange, so please consider volunteering for this worthy cause. As you know, we moved the ASID office within the LDC for your convenience and to save our Chapter money. If you have not seen the office, stop by and introduce yourself to our new administrator, Alison.
Being elected as President Elect is an honor and privilege I have not taken lightly. I have experienced many Chapter Committee and Board positions over the years, but none have impacted my greater sense of duty for the future of the Orange County Chapter's future and wellbeing as this position. ASID is celebrating its 40th Birthday this year, 2015, which actually has been in existence for over 80 years under other titles. That is impressive! ASID is the sum of its parts by representing all design professionals, including educators, designers, students and IP members. We are united to support and help grow the design community. I hope you appreciate the efforts of all the ASID volunteers on the local and national level who keep us apprised of this industry's trends, education, legal and legislation matters. This translates into a professional support system for you with viable resources and education.
I just returned from the ASID Legislation Symposium in Washington DC, which explains my cheerleader comments about ASID above! I see the big picture of ASID's direction and what we strive for to be recognized as interior design professionals in this skeptical world. My request of you, the recipient of ASID's efforts, is to participate and support the Chapter's events. Please also consider joining IDCC ($55 for designers and industry partners and $10 for students) at idc-ca.org to protect your right to practice interior design in California. Whether you are aware of it or not, IDCC saved our right to practice in 2014 by defeating a bill in Sacramento. IDCC is really working for us.
Please let me know in person, or call or email me with your ideas, comments and concerns for the 2015-2016 Chapter term. I am open to your viewpoint about the Orange County ASID Chapter's current and future direction. I hope you have a fun summer with your family and friends!

INDUSTRY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
Richard Downes - Style Bath Enclosures Over the past 7 years, I have been a supporter of the design industry and a very active and committed member of ASID OCC, which is one of my favorite professional affiliations. Attendance at every general meeting, participation as an exhibitor in our annual tradeshows, sponsorship of our annual Gala, serving on committees including the tradeshow, expo and nominating committees, and serving for two terms as chapter Industry Partner Liaison have been enormously rewarding both professionally and personally. I have also been an active volunteer with various other community non-profit organizations, in addition to serving as the Southern California chapter President of NKBA in 2012 and 2013. I have greatly enjoyed forming both long-term business relationships and great friendships, including a very special bond of mutual love with one our fellow chapter members in particular. I have two incredibly talented adult children: Brendan is a professional poker player living in Mexico, and Lizzie is a middle school special education teacher is South Central Los Angeles, and her school’s teacher of the year in 2015. I am a well-established resident of Orange County, over 30 years after moving from LA, with a business background rooted in a family owned and operated retail chain (with 19 locations throughout Southern California). With an extensive background in sales and marketing, I understand the importance of customer service and retention and am extremely grateful to have earned trusted working relationships with over 40 of our chapter’s design practitioners. At Style Bath Enclosures, we have developed a seamless process to offer the design trade and their clients beautiful, affordable and profitable solutions through our glass shower enclosures, mirrors and more. What separates us from most in our industry is that our highly skilled craftsmanship is paired with attention to detail. By creating a visually stunning space, we will go to great lengths to make certain we are incorporating your design theme with our unlimited selection of glass, while working with you to develop the perfect cohesive and stylish look. We have developed a unique process that designers find extremely valuable to their overall design vision. Share with us your design concepts, material selections and color samples so our staff can assist you with selecting glass, mirror and hardware options for your projects!

Frank often includes his one-of-a-kind, custom items that he creates himself. Custom furniture, artwork, lamps, and accessory items can be seen in his installations. Items from his own collection are signed and dated as far back as 1985. “To re-purpose is the greenest of green design.” Frank often tells clients, and he can frequently be seen visiting antique and consignment shops all over Orange County. Frank’s passion for drawing and painting started at a very young age and he could be spotted from childhood through his teen years sketching and painting local architectural landmarks such as Death Valley’s Scotty’s Castle. Residential design was an obvious choice, as he preferred an afternoon of walking new home construction sites over most teen activities. Frank is a graduate of Brooks College, where he was hired through the intern program by a successful residential firm in Los Angeles. He soon became senior designer and by 1985, opened his own firm. He is a four time recipient of the ASID platinum award, and is currently installing his 11th showcase space in the 2015 Orange County Philharmonic House of Design.

February General Meeting By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID 2014-2015 Programs Co-Chair How do you walk away from a meeting feeling so inspired and excited after learning that you are doing so many things the wrong way? Have renowned designer, Kimberley Seldon, tell you a thing or two -- that’s how! Our February meeting continued down the path of imparting invaluable knowledge about how to improve our business practices and make our lives easier. We were very fortunate to welcome Kimberley, who shared her incredible insights on what it takes to run a successful design firm and increase job and client satisfaction. Our host for the evening was Design Center Associates in Santa Ana. Upon arriving, guests enjoyed lemon drop martinis and wine while mingling and perusing the fantastic selection of to-the-trade furnishings in the well-appointed salons throughout the showroom. Owner, Merrill Plou, not only showcased her well-curated furniture and accessories collections, but also her phenomenal chef skills. We were treated to an exceptional dinner, specially prepared by Merrill, including chicken and vegetarian curries, accompanied by seasoned rice, a unique selection of garnishes and a lovely mixed green salad. An assortment of sweets and coffee were the perfect ending to the delicious meal. We began our presentation by welcoming our Industry Partners to the microphone, allowing them the opportunity to introduce themselves and tell us a bit about their businesses. President Gigi Harris, then updated us on our office relocation, expressed a heartfelt goodbye to our wonderful adminis-
trator, Kasey Sterling, and offered a warm welcome to our new administrator, Alison Sperling. Gigi also presented a certificate of appreciation to Kerry Anderson, who is relocating to Colorado. Kerry has been the audio/visual cornerstone for our meetings for so many years, and we will truly miss him. Kimberley then took the stage and had us laughing immediately. The beauty of Seldon’s presentation, “More Money, More Profit”, was that she openly shared all of her stumbles, missteps, and failures with such honesty and incredible humor, and followed up with concrete direction on how to forge ahead and become more profitable and more satisfied. She peppered her material with real-life experiences and proven solutions that were tried and true. Nearly every designer in the room could relate to her stories and were captivated by her dynamic personality. Kimberley delivered on her promise that she would not present theory, but rather a specific and tangible formula for success! Following the presentation, guests had the opportunity to purchase Kimberley’s books, the Business of Design Part 1 and Part 2. Needless to say, the checkout line was long – a testament to how well her message was received. The grand finale of the evening was a phenomenal raffle. An impressive selection of accessories and art were generously donated by Design Center Associates. Prizes included a stunning faux orchid arrangement, an oversized clock, a mercury glass lamp, a decorative gold leather box, and the grand prize – a gorgeous, framed watercolor of a tortoise. Lucky winner, Sean Storm, of Custom Comfort Mattress, happily took home the special piece of art.

March General Meeting By Veronica Lawrence, ASID Programs 2014/15 Co-Chair
A CELEBRATION AS ASID TURNS 40 For most of us, turning 40 is a milestone we approach with some apprehension, but once we get there, soon come to realize that this is a time to embrace the future. After all, you’re established, in your prime and looking ahead, there is much you want to accomplish. Celebrating ASID’s 40th birthday, we can acknowledge this is also true for our organization! ASID has come a long way in the promotion and support of the interior design community and is positioned to achieve so much more in the future.
For this 40th birthday celebration, our host, ProSource, in Placentia, threw a great fiesta with a delicious Mexican buffet catered by El Sarolito, including freshly served margaritas and tasty mini cupcakes. A Mariachi band, Mariachi
Kerry Anderson, Diane Sparacino, Adriel Cogdal, Sheila Hupp
Oliva, livened up the festivities, which were enjoyed by around 90 guests. The mood was fun and vibrant, with plenty of time to catch up with friends and colleagues as well as meet someone new.
ProSource generously provided the most exciting raffle prizes for the evening: a Temecula cable car wine cruise, 2 Hornblower Cruises and a Top Gun flight simulation experience. We changed things up by announcing prize winners throughout the evening and most claimed they never win anything!
Around 7pm we brought the meeting to order and President Gigi Harris went through the announcements covering a robust calendar of events as we head into the next 6 months. Industry partners were given the opportunity to introduce their companies with a brief overview of products and services. Our host, ProSource’s Michael Espinoza, gave us a witty review of their “to-thetrade” products and services for this well stocked showroom, and then
Susana Padilla, Sean Storm, Christopher Erca, Michelle Erca, Sally Taylor
announced their new location, which will open this summer in Irvine.
As the evening progressed, we assigned the designer’s challenge: pull together the finishes to be used in the modern kitchen, traditional kitchen and bathroom vignettes in ProSource’s new Irvine showroom. Teams scrambled around the showroom to select their choices. We ended up with 6 teams that presented and all did an outstanding job. The judges (vendors) announced the winners for “best presentation” and “best of the bunch”. The winning teams, along with their design selections, will be featured in the new Irvine showroom. Congratulations to the winning teams: “Best of the Bunch” - Sally Taylor, Christopher Erca, Michelle Erca, Sean Storm and Suzanna Padilla as well as “Best Presentation” - Sheila Hupp and Henry Nader.
The entire evening of fun events was very well organized by Lin Garcia from ProSource, and what a great job she did! Thanks also to Michael Espinoza and the entire ProSource team for their wonderful hospitality. We are looking forward to the grand opening of the new location.

ASID Member CEU Requirement 1.0 CEU (10 hours) per 2 years ASID members must earn a minimum of 1.0 (10 hours) approved continuing education units (CEU) every two years. The current reporting period is from January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2015. ASID bylaws and policies require all practitioner members (Professional, Allied, and Associate members) to meet the continuing education requirement. The ASID continuing education requirement is separate from any
mandated continuing education requirement in your local jurisdiction. Check with your state regulatory board for requirements. Members in the following categories are not required to fulfill the continuing education requirement: Professional Inactive, Professional Life Member, Professional Retired, Allied Retired, Industry Partner, and Student Member. For more information, please contact us at Education@asid.org or by phone at 202-675-2341. The number of continuing education units required during your first membership reporting period varies, depending on when you joined ASID or when your membership status changed: • 18 - 24 months before the end of the reporting period = 1.0 (10 hours) CEUs required (Before May 31, 2014) • 7 - 17 months before the end of the reporting period = 0.5 (5 hours) CEUs required (June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015) • 0 - 6 months before the end of the reporting period = 0.0 (0 hours) CEUs required (June 1, 2015 to Dec. 31, 2015)
GRAND OPENING
Reporting CEU Compliance ASID members are to utilize the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC) registry to warehouse CEUs. Every ASID member has a unique IDCEC number to login into the website (your IDCEC number is different than your ASID number). The IDCEC user registry allows you to upload and track your continuing education activity as well as store a record for you under your account. Check your IDCEC account regularly to ensure your records are up to date. Learn more under the IDCEC section of the ASID website. ASID receives frequent reports from IDCEC indicating how many CEUs each member has attained and utilizes this report to monitor member continuing education compliance. If you successfully submit all courses via IDCEC and upload your certificates of completion, you do not have to report any other information to ASID for CEU compliance unless notified to do so.

Special Circumstances ASID may grant an adjustment to the requirement for poor health, certified by a physician; a specific physical or mental disability, certified by an appropriate health care professional; extended duty with the armed forces; or for extreme hardship, which, in the board’s judgment, makes it impossible for the member to comply. Requests for an adjustment to the continuing education requirement must be made no less than three months (by September 30) before the end of the current reporting period. Audits and Failure to Comply At the end of a reporting period, ASID will review the IDCEC report of CEUs completed by each member. Select members will be audited and required to submit proof of the 1.0 (10 hours) CEUs required by way of a certificate of attendance or completion, or a stamped conference card. Members who cannot supply proof of completion will face failure of compliance. Any member who fails to comply with the continuing education requirement may be subject to suspension of Society membership in accordance with the requirements of the ASID Bylaws.

2014 - 2015 Student Career Day By Jan Smith 2014-2015 ASID OC Student Liaison This year’s goal for Student Career Day was to create excitement and enthusiasm for the design industry and the showrooms at the Laguna Design Center. David Colton, owner of the LDC and Gigi Harris, current ASID OC President, introduced the event on Thursday, February 26th to 40-50 students, who ambitiously toured 14 showrooms during the day.
To facilitate these tours and to enhance the experience, each group had a seasoned design guide who was there to lead their tour and answer any questions the students may have along the way. They were shown the ins and outs of the indi-

Saddleback College By Kellie Prelitz-Davis Saddleback College Student Chapter President Saddleback College Interior Design Students Participate In The Worldwide Solar Decathlon Competition Saddleback College interior design students, Bella Aubrey and Paige Svehlak, along with students from the Saddleback Architecture Department, joined forces with Chapman University (Communications), UCI (Project Management & Structural/Engineering) and IVC (Construction Site) to compete in the enormous, yet rewarding worldwide collegiate Solar Decathlon competition, forming Team Orange County with roughly 100 members to design and build CASA DEL SOL. Bella Aubrey | Paige Svehlak The solar decathlon is a competition put on by the U.S. Department of Energy, to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. From the ground up, teams across the world build modular homes with solar and resourceful appliances. The purpose of this competition is to educate students and the public about the importance, benefits and money-saving opportunities that clean-energy products and design solutions can provide. It provides participants with unique training to enter into and lead our nation’s clean-energy workforce and be the bastions and guardians of our environment. The competition also gives the public the opportunity to learn about the comfort and affordability of homes that combine energy-efficient construction and appliances with the renewable energy systems available today. According to Paige Svehlak, “In order to live a prosperous life, as a society we must make changes to our lifestyle and be mindful of our impact to our Rendering of CASA DEL SOL planet.” She continues, “The solar decathlon highlights these ideals and encourages them, while challenging students to confront these issues head on by using innovative technology, sustainable resources, and creative design.”
that I know will be well worth the effort in the end.” And Paige includes, “This opportunity goes far beyond just building a home and participating in a competition. It's about inspiring others to make educated choices, and sharing it with generations to come.”

Mentors from LPA, Gensler Architects and Nuvis Landscape Architects are on deck to assist Team Orange County throughout the various phases of the project. Both Bella and Paige agree that they are gaining an invaluable amount of education from LPA, Gensler and Nuvis, and are grateful for the guidance they are receiving. “All the work from every team member is proof of how much teamwork and collaboration goes into one project,” said Bella. “The hands-on experience is something you just cannot learn in a classroom.” Paige adds, “This experience has undoubtedly been a challenge, but a great one. It has certainly proven to me the level of educaRendering of flex room tion and knowledge that is required in the professional world and the amount of team effort that is necessary to successfully achieve the end product we are all striving for.” The Orange County Team home “CASA DEL SOL” will be showcased at the Great Park in Irvine in October 2015. Please check the website at www.solardecathlon.gov for the official date and for more information including photos of contending team homes. The Interior Design Department faculty and fellow students are very proud of Bella and Paige for their dedication and enthusiasm for this competition. Go Team Orange County!
The teams spend almost two years creating houses to compete in the Solar Decathlon. The winning team produces a house that: • Is affordable, attractive, and easy to live in • Maintains comfortable and healthy indoor environmental conditions • Supplies energy to household appliances for cooking, cleaning, and entertainment • Provides adequate hot water • Produces as much or more energy than it consumes Bella Aubrey states, “The hours and dedication required for this competition, on top of a full school load, has been the biggest challenge, but it’s one

Interior Designers Institute Interior Designers Institute is dedicated to integrating our students into the local design community. Eight talented students are participating in the Philharmonic House of Design located in Shady Canyon. The teams has been tasked to design the “main level hall” in addition to the “upstairs landing”. The “main level hall” team is lead by Keighley Botterill and team members include Jessica Kasper, Andres Lowy-Volgi, Lucia Henry and Mari GarciaPiernos. Blending traditional furnishings with organically inspired artwork creates an inviting hallway, which encourages exploration through the residence. Finding inspiration in the architecture of the home, including the arches and spiral staircase, the team is bringing a modern edge to a classic space through furnishings with clean lines, ceramic sculptures, and abstract paintings. The neutral walls provided the ideal canvas for the blue, red and gold artwork, creating dramatic and elegant contrast in every detail.

A team of CAD and Interior Design students from the Anaheim and Torrance campuses are participating, by producing digital drawings using AutoCAD and Revit software to redraw the original hand-drafted set of plans. The members of the Anaheim campus are Andrea Lopez and Ramon Uribe. The students from the Torrance campus are Raul Salinas, Robert Wise, and Steven Tavita. The faculty advisor for this project is Ms. Mercedes Evans. Our Anaheim Westwood student chapter is very excited to continue with their fundraising events to support ASID membership. We hope to increase participation and raise funds for various events including competition and community based projects.
