Dear Chapter Members,

I used to dance to a cute little song called “Everything Old is New Again”. And that sentiment is so true. We see it in fashion with platform shoes, varying hemlines and the return of wide bottom slacks. In architecture we see it with the overwhelming craze of modern and post-modern designs. So maybe it’s not so far-fetched that we’re seeing it in our own chapter with my return as President-Elect.

But just as modern design is being re-fashioned for this century with new technology and fashion is nostalgic with twists to make it feel new, it is my aim not to live in the past but to become familiar and comfortable with the changing needs and tastes of our current membership.

Nothing stays the same and though change can be scary and challenging, it’s also revitalizing, exciting and healthy. It stretches your brain muscles and forces you to look at things from a different perspective. So returning to leadership is an opportunity for me to look at our current challenges from a different place. ASID has changed in the last ten years, the world has changed and how we do business has changed. And it will always keep changing!

I am looking forward to this year as President-Elect, to work with Jamie and our dedicated and talented board. I look forward to meeting more of our new members and to hear how our chapter can better serve your changing needs and challenges and to continue our chapter’s growth. Please come talk with me and give me your thoughts on what we do well and what we need to improve.

With Warm Regards,

Adriel Cogdal, ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President-Elect 2015-2016

2015 ASID Design

By Traci Salemme, Gala Committee

This year’s event was held on September 20th at the beautiful and historic grounds of the Muckenthaler Mansion in Fullerton, CA. The evening was themed around the style of an Old World Vaudeville Carnival, and inside the mansion, wandering magicians entertained the guests, amid artwork that showcased the 50th anniversary of the mansion itself.

Our very own Alison

Next, we welcomed and installed our new 2015-2016 Board of Directors and heard the welcome address from our new president, Jamie Namanny. Dinner and design awards followed and were held outdoors under the patio lights.

Our collection of prints are available thanks to our exclusive partnerships with French National Museums such as the Museum of Printed Textiles, The Louvre, Orsay, and Versailles. Custom Printed Wall Upholstery Also Available.

To close out the evening, our outgoing president Gigi Harris gave an amazing pictorial look at all the events of the past year. She also acknowledged the past presidents, as ASID celebrates its own 40 year anniversary. The entire evening would not have been possible without the efforts of the Gala Committee and without our Gala Sponsors. At the Gold level: Rohl; at the Silver level: Cosentino Surfaces, Ferguson Bath & Kitchen, and Sub Zero/Wolf; and at the Bronze level: Daltile, Bartley Group, Kravet, Pirch, ProSource, Style Bath Enclosures, Design Within Reach and Trendy Surfaces. We truly thank you for being a part of this event! We also want to give a special thanks to our Design Awards Sponsor, Walker Zanger, and to our exclusive Media Sponsor, Orange Coast Magazine. Walker Zanger by Michele Prata, Allied ASID, Membership Director ASID-OC 2014-2016 Founded in 1952, Walker Zanger is one of the world’s most respected luxury brands of stone and tile in our industry. Inspired by architecture, art, fashion and nature, they combine traditional tile making techniques with a modern sophistication that transcends any singular design style. They are a global leading choice for design professionals. They have created their showrooms with displays of tile and stone products in luxurious and intimate settings designed to inspire. Each showroom contains architectural elements intended to evoke an elegant residential or commercial ambiance. Our ASID-OC chapter is very happy to have the Walker Zanger showroom in Tustin as one of our Industry Partners, especially when it comes to helping out our chapter! This year we asked Walker Zanger’s marketing manager, DJ Intal, to sponsor our Design Awards and they did – with beautiful marble trophies for our winners and our design awards submission website. Branch manager Chuck Carstensen attended this year’s Gala and Design Awards at the Muckenthaler Center in Fullerton, in full Gala regalia, and handed the trophies out to our lucky winners! The Orange County location has been open since 1979, and is always ready to assist us in selecting products for our important projects. Betsy Sandstrom, their knowledgeable showroom manager, oversees our accounts with her friendly staff, and also hosts events in the showroom! We are very grateful to them for having hosted our Design Awards Kickoff on April 1st with a wonderful spread of delicious foods to enjoy! In May, Walker Zanger also welcomed our iDOD group for an evening of mentoring between our emerging professionals. Over the years, Walker Zanger has hosted our general meetings with graciousness, beautiful prizes, grab bags and support.

A $500.00 Shade Store Gift Certificate was raffled off, and won by Julia Caro, ASID. The event was a success and ASID-OC will plan future mixers to foster other networking opportunities.

Roche Bobois Furniture Grand Opening By Jamie Namanny, Allied ASID ASID OC President 2015-2016 On September 2nd, Roche Bobois Furniture had their Grand Opening at the South Coast Collection (SOCO). Roche Bobois' unique and highly contemporary furniture was viewed by a large number of guests, who were also treated with delicious appetizers and specialty cocktails. We were fascinated by a professional sugar sculptor who created a delicate masterpiece before our very eyes. They served extraordinary candy treats that were a true work of art – too pretty to eat. There was contemporary music and lots of excitement that evening. Congratulations Roche Bobois!

Labor of Love By Angela Eason, Allied ASID 2015-2016 Community Service Project Chair The management team and staff of the Orange Ronald McDonald House (RMH) are motivated and determined to meet their operational goals! They have supported ASID-OC every step of the way, and are really appreciative of the Labor of Love 2 Project team, ASID-OC leadership and ASID-OC. They see that we are determined to deliver quality spaces and are supportive of their goals and objectives. Donations have played a big part in keeping Labor of Love 2 alive and progressing. ASID-OC's primary fundraising event for the Labor of Love 2 Project, Chairs for Charity, was quite successful! Enough funds were raised to be earmarked by RMH for the refacing of the kitchen cabinets. We are truly appreciative of the donations received from our Industry Partners and friends of design, and their support of our Entry Area, Living Room, and Kitchen renovations.

Industry Partners Donations Benjamin Moore: donated over 200 gallons of paint to freshen up the 1st floor common areas, 2nd floor hallways and ceiling, and the 3rd floor hallways Decorative Construction: donated all labor for the kitchen cabinet refacing. August General Meeting By Cynthia Prizant “Let’s spend an evening talking about taxes.” Yawn! Yes, that’s the reaction of most designers when this subject is broached, but our August general meeting was anything but dull and dry. We began the evening with a cocktail reception in the beautifully appointed J Marshall showroom. Guests had the opportunity to mingle and enjoy tropical Aloha Kiss cocktails amongst a tasteful selection of furnishings from Barclay Butera, Vanguard and Bernhardt. We then moseyed out to Center Court in the Laguna Design Center, where J Marshall showroom manager and hostess extraordinaire, Kasey Sterling, treated us to a mouthwatering Hawaiian Luau buffet, abounding with teriyaki chicken, Kailua pork, Mochiko Beef, soba noodles, salad, slaw, rice, fruit and Hawaiian bread. Homemade macadamia nut cookies were the perfect finishing touch to the splendid Polynesian feast.

Mark Dugally & Barbara Dugally

President Gigi Harris began the evening’s presentation with announcements of upcoming events and a gracious acknowledgement to those who have served on the ASID board and committees throughout her term. State Board of Equalization Professional Advisor Lisa Renati then took the stage to give us a very insightful and

extremely informative presentation on how designers should record and report sales and use taxes. Lisa’s career with the BOE spans almost three decades, where she has honed an in-depth knowledge of the sales and use tax laws pertaining to the varied businesses and corporate clients unique to Orange County. In her presentation to our members, she covered topics very specific to our industry, including which design services are taxable, expectations for marking up wholesale goods that are resold and where to turn for help on filing taxes. Designers and industry partners had a chance to pose questions and specific design-related scenarios to get clear feedback on proper reporting requirements. Following Q&A was our raffle. Gifts donated by J Marshall included two coffee table books by Barclay Butera, a wine and cheese basket with accompanying gift card to Roy’s Restaurant, and the grand prize – a phenomenal hammered brass mirror from Kalalou, valued at $300, and won by the lucky Ms. Julia Caro. We are grateful to the Colton Company, who generously donated the Center Court area, as well as seating and audio for our event. Our A/V hero Derek Fisher, of FiberSeal, was on site, as usual, to set up the screen and projector. Many thanks to Kasey Sterling for making certain that we were all well fed, and to Derek for ensuring that we could all see and hear! For those who were unable to attend, a copy of the PowerPoint presentation is available for your review. Please contact Alison Sperling in the ASID office, if interested.

July General Meeting By Veronica Lawrence, ASID Programs 2014/15 Co-Chair

THE SUMMER BBQ AT COSENTINO This year, Cosentino hosted our Summer BBQ General Meeting at their Anaheim showroom, which includes some wonderful vignettes showcasing their impressive products. Cosentino’s staff, led by Mitch Sebolsky, organized a great event with a barbecue spread of tasty eats, which all guests enjoyed. Checkered red, white and blue table cloths adorned the tables and buffet, making this a truly festive occasion. The fall-off-the-bone ribs were my favorite and the peach cobbler dessert was a yummy treat. Attendees gathered around the refreshment station inside the showroom or meandered through the warehouse where the barbeque was served. Meeting up with colleagues and networking made for a fun-filled time as we sipped wine and chatted. Around 7pm, we called the meeting to order and industry partners were invited up to give their business introductions. President Gigi Harris gave a brief introduction, and then handed over to Jamie Namanny, President Elect. Jamie reviewed all the upcoming events and it was evident that the calendar is vibrant and full of great plans crossing over into her term. Adriel Cogdal gave a spirited and enlightened review of the hurdles and challenges the IDCC is tackling. Her IDCC cap was passed around to collect much needed and appreciated funds (she’s still collecting even small amounts; it’s a really important industry cause). We then introduced our host, Mitch Sebolsky, who gave an overview of all things Cosentino. On display was their newly introduced Dekton indoor/ outdoor countertop material, as well as a comprehensive range of products. Betty Friedrichs from 3Form presented our IDCEC approved CEU course "Capturing Light" -- a presentation that introduced the principles of light design as they apply to illuminating resin features. This very interesting topic came with great visuals of resin panel installations in mostly commercial and healthcare locations. We learned about the impact and result of using both direct light and LED backlights, as well as other light sources on resin panels. Betty demonstrated how to transform color and pattern with the lights showing dramatic and awesome results. Prior to the CEU presentation, Betty also gave us some insights into the great work being done by 3Form to support and rebuild devastated regions around the world. With their creative and inspiring products, 3Form can create the most ingenious spaces and often times these products benefit their causes.

After the CEU presentation, we held the drawing for raffle prizes all donated by Cosentino. Gift cards were won from Starbucks, Taco Bell, and Jamba Juice. Cosentino, who owns their own winery, gave 2 bottles of their best wine. The grand prize for the evening: a Dekton product slab to be selected from the collection by the winner for install at a location of their choice. Nice! Many attendees lingered after the meeting, chatting and sipping wine; it seems there was much business to discuss. Thank you to all the staff at Cosentino and of course, Mitch, for hosting such a well-planned summer barbeque and overall well attended event. Thank you to Betty Friedrichs from 3Form for giving her time to present the CEU to the ASID’s attendees at this July General Meeting. She’ll submit attendees’ names for IDCEC – CEU credit. Remember you have until year end to accumulate your 10 hours of completed CEU courses. A big thank you to our always present photographer Richard Peralta from Hafele, who always shows up and gets the job done! A special thanks to Derek Fisher from Fiber Seal who gave his time and expertise to make sure that the audiovisual ran smoothly. Lastly, thank you to all attendees who made the effort to attend -- we hope that the general meetings bring knowledge and value to your business!

Student Rep to the Board Message By Kellie Davis, Student Rep to the Board My name is Kellie Davis and I currently attend Saddleback College pursuing my passion for Interior Design. In 2014, I was approached by one of my instructors about being President of Saddleback’s Interior Design Club and, of course, I proudly accepted. It has certainly been a wonderful experience and I am grateful to have worked with very talented student Board members.

Being in a leadership position is not something I take lightly or step into easily, and certainly not without much thought. However, when approached by the same instructor about being the Student Representative to the Board for ASID, I was very honored and, after much consideration, I am excited to accept the position for the 2015-2016 term. It is a great opportunity for a student designer and is a natural transition for me. Indeed, it has already been quite an experience!

I believe that one should have the mindset of a student throughout one’s life. Gandhi said, “live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” As Student Representative, my goal is to help interior design

students learn and grow by informing them of the many benefits of ASID membership and by promoting the various opportunities, information and events that membership provides. In doing so, I continue to learn and grow as well.

In fact, my first opportunity as SRB occurred on October 6th, when an instructor invited me to speak with her Careers class about ASID. Along with Michele

Cabinetry Millwork Mouldings

Prata, Membership Director, we were able to successfully ignite interest and inspire the students to attend meetings and events and, more importantly, become student members. We had a very engaging dialogue with the students and they received our message with enthusiasm. We distributed materials, handed out prizes and even raffled off an ASID membership (sponsored by myself ) to one very happy student.

I am deeply honored to be involved with a truly great Board and among like-minded people, as it can only help me become a better designer and a smarter professional. I look forward to growing with this organization and those who are a part of it and I am excited to engage more students and to watch them grow with ASID!

Summer IP Forum By Celeste Lehmann We had a fantastic turnout for the Summer IP Forum, which was hosted by Erica Lynn at Ferguson's showroom. The evening featured a cooking demo by Sub-Zero and Wolf ’s Tracy Burge, which showcased their latest appliances and great food. Present and new Industry Partners got to network with designers and hear testimonials from the current IP's on what it means to be involved in ASID-Orange County. Fun was had by all! I would like to say thank you to the past ASID Board members for making this past year such a fun and exciting time. I truly have enjoyed my time as the ASID-Orange County IP Liaison. What a great group of people we have in our organization. I look forward to continuing my participation with the ASIDOrange County for many years to come!
