Dear Colleagues, I hope you are all enjoying the holiday season. Our new fiscal year is in full swing and your Board of Directors and I have an exciting year planned for ASID Orange County. All indicators point to a continued upswing in our industry as we each find new ways to be more productive and profitable, as we expand our minds and our businesses towards sustainable growth. ENGAGEMENT of our members is critical to our success. The leadership team and I are focused on keeping the momentum going; making our chapter even stronger and bringing relevant and interesting programs to all segments of our membership. As we create networking opportunities that are both beneficial and enjoyable, we understand that your time and energy are valuable. As your President for 2014-2015, I am committed to making sure that ASID Orange County continues to serve your needs and brings you a return on your membership investment by giving you what is important. Our monthly general meetings (held the 3rd Wednesday, with a few exceptions) and bi-monthly Lunch & Learns and mixers will be held at our various industry partner showrooms, providing informative speaking topics and networking opportunities that will allow you to interface with members, new and old. This year we are introducing a new mentorship program called iDOD (Interior Designers Open Dialogue) available to all design practitioners at every level of experience. Our industry partner forums are designed to orient new vendors and give our IPs an exclusive venue to interface with other vendors and have open discussions. Our annual industry partner expo is currently undergoing a face lift and will emerge in May with a brand new look and feel. We will strive to engage our members who practice commercial and hospitality design, as well as add more Industry Partner members whose products and services focus on this segment of our industry. COMMUNICATION is vital to ensuring we are creating value. Our email blasts, newsletters and social media pages are designed to keep our membership current on what is happening in our chapter. If you haven’t “liked” our Facebook page, search for us at “ASID Orange County”. With our ongoing media partnerships, ASID Orange County will continue its campaign for brand recognition as the premier network of interior design professionals. Thank you to all who participated in our recent member survey. We want to make sure that the lines of communication are open and that we continue to evolve. Your feedback is always welcome and appreciated. Lastly, now that the economy is rebounding, it is timely that we embrace the notion of CONTRIBUTION. We will give back to the community through our chosen charity of the year: the Ronald McDonald House of Orange County. With the revival of a past design program called Chairs for Charity, our goal is to use the monies raised in this silent auction event to renovate the Orange County Ronald McDonald House during the summer months. It is a wonderful organization that could benefit from what our chapter can offer. We are very excited about this partnership and invite you all to get involved in both the Chairs for Charity event, as well as the community service project. We are looking for sponsors and designers for both. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be leading our organization during this promising economic climate and look forward to sharing this time with you. Thank you for all that you do to support our chapter. Without your involvement, we wouldn’t exist. Happy holidays to you and yours. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!
Warm Regards, Gigi Harris, Allied ASID ASID CA Orange County Chapter President 2014-2015

CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER
CALIFORNIA ORANGE COUNTY
Dear Members,
The ASID Orange County chapter officially began its new term October 1, 2014. All chapter members are very fortunate to have such innovative and dedicated Board and Committee leaders this year. Gigi Harris is a dynamic President, with the experience of having been on the Board for many years, and I have the privilege to be the President Elect this term working alongside her. I believe in this year's direction of ASID and will support Gigi as she fulfills her chapter goals.
There are some new and exciting events coming up this year. We are ecstatic to announce that our Community Service Project will be the Ronald McDonald House in Orange. We plan to renovate and decorate certain areas of the House by way of a most exciting fund-raising event, Chairs for Charity. Yes, it's back! Many designers enjoyed participating in this event a few years ago, and this is going to be fun, classy and profitable for the Ronald McDonald House renovation.
We are also diligently working on the Industry Partner Expo as I write. We have come up with some very original ideas for this event that IPs and designers alike will appreciate. Speaking of designers, our focus is not only on the residential designer, but on commercial designers too. We are promoting the involvement of students, emerging professionals and potential members as well. The more we can exchange ideas, services and products, the better for us all!
As President Elect, my duty is to keep close tabs on our industry's legislative matters. IDCC is the "watch dog" organization keeping us on top of all the legislative issues and challenges. We are protecting your right to practice through legislative channels.
One more note of interest regarding the Orange County ASID Chapter -- if you did not know – is that we are one of the largest and most prestigious chapters in the nation. Other chapters have inquired about how we conduct our events and manage the chapter. There is an opportunity for you, as a member of such an extraordinary Chapter, to volunteer some time and effort to support the Chapter. When you attend our monthly meetings, ask any of the Board or Committee members how you can help.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

continuing basis for all things considered. Whether it be what products they sell or how they treat their customers, they always think, “What products would I want in my house, and how would I like to be treated?” That basic foundation of great quality products along with outstanding customer service and knowledge has earned the loyalty of designers, contractors, and homeowners alike. Today, the RSSA family has expanded. There are now five children, three of whom are still involved in the business. Ali and Ranna run the day-to-day operations, and Syna has opened a store of her own called RSSA Vintage. They have literally grown up in the industry, and although young, their product knowledge is remarkable. The store has also expanded from that small hardware store to one selling fixtures, appliances, doors, windows, kitchen cabinets and everything in-between. They truly are a one-stop shop experience. You can go in with your plans, and they can supply you with everything you need.
RSSA is a premier kitchen and bath showroom in the heart of Orange County. It was established in 1978 and has been family owned and operated for two generations. From its humble beginnings, Ray Allahbakhshi worked as a contractor to put himself through college, and after graduating with a Master’s degree in Bio-Chemistry, he found himself with an abundance of spare parts. With those spare parts, Ray and Sylvia decided to open a hardware store. At the time, they had their first daughter Syna and named the store RSSA, an acronym for the family (Ray, Sylvia, Syna, Allahbakhshi). Family has been the
With the opening of their new flagship location, a 26,000 square foot two-story showroom, RSSA is adding yet another dynamic to their business model. The new showroom will cater more towards designers and feature four live kitchens, bathroom vignettes, hundreds of bathroom fixtures in every style imaginable, tile, marble, mirrors with TV’s, lighting, bathtubs and hardware, all in an open and easy-to-navigate space. This new layout will make it easy for designers to come in and bring clients so they can visualize the whole project. The store will have a soft opening in January, but you can stop by now with your clients. Appointments can be made with Ali by calling (714)757-9094.

ASID-OCC 2014
Design Awards By Michele Prata, Allied ASID, 2014 Design Awards Chair This year’s Gala and Design Awards Celebration was held in September at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. In addition to recognizing our design winners and other valuable partners, the event combined our annual Kickoff, generously sponsored by our industry partner Cambria, and the launch of ASID-OCC Design Awards.com website. During the Celebration, designers enjoyed the Installation of the incoming President and Board of Directors, a museum tour and silent auction, and an excellent surf & turf dinner with cocktails and dessert. Jason Titus, ASID, presented our Lifetime Achievement Award to BJ Peterson, FASID, while 2013-2014 President Deirdre Eagles, Allied ASID, and 2014 Design Awards Chair Michele Prata, Allied ASID, presented the awards to Chapter Industry Partner of the Year Honoree Maria Deganis, Merit IP Award winner Kerry Anderson, and our Student of the Year winner Traci Salemme. In addition to a Platinum or Gold trophy and special certificate, award winners will be published in Orange Coast Magazine, be part of a combined feature in ASID-OC’s Quarterly Newsletter, receive yearlong recognition in the Winner’s Circle section of our Design Awards Website, as well as social media recognition on Facebook, Twitter and our ASID-OCC website. The new ASID-OCC Design Awards website, launched at the Awards event, (http://asidoccdesignawards.com/) makes it easy for designers to submit their work for consideration of an award. From this new site, designers can upload photos of their projects (including the ‘before’ state), select a relevant category, and include problem/ solution statements for their submissions. We look forward to receiving many great entries in the coming years! Congratulations to our design award and award honoree recipients this year! Much appreciation to our event sponsors who make our Gala and Design Awards beautifully possible: Design Awards Sponsor: Cambria; Media Partner: Orange Coast Magazine; Gold Level Sponsors: HGTV Professionals Network and Pirch; Silver Level Sponsors: Design Within Reach and Subzero/Wolf; and Bronze Level Sponsors: B&C Select, Dal Tile, Famosa, Fashion Interiors, Kravet, Posh Homes, and Style Bath Enclosures; and Donating Sponsor: B’z Blooms.

on September 14 at the beautiful Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.
The guests arrived at 4pm and were able to tour the historical museum while enjoying a signature soft drink of the event. As they explored the Library, talented musician Paul DaSilva played classical music on the grand piano, and guests were able to enjoy hors d'oeuvres while bidding on Silent Auction items to benefit Working Wardrobes.
The Installation event took place in the beautifully manicured Library garden, where Gigi Harris was welcomed as the new ASID OC President, along with her Board for the fiscal year of 2014-2015.
Dinner was served in the breathtakingly glamorous East Room, on beautifully Gigi Harris & Beverly Stadler during the Installation Ceremony decorated round tables each named after one of the event's sponsors. After officially welcoming the guests and recognizing the sponsors, Deirdre Eagles, outgoing ASID OC President, gave her speech and kicked off the Design Awards ceremony.
This "magical evening" -- as described by many attendees -- was a crème de la crème event of the year and was made possible by the generosity of our valuable Gold Level Sponsors: HGTV and PIRCH; Silver Level Sponsors: Design Within Reach and Sub-Zero Wolf; Bronze Level Sponsors: B&C Select, Daltile, Famosa, Fashion Interiors, Kravet/Lee Jofa/ Brunschwig & Fils, Posh Homes, and Style Bath Enclosures; Donating Sponsor: B'z Blooms for the floral arrangements; and Brandon Lambert Photography for capturing all the

October General Meeting By Cynthia Prizant, Allied ASID 2014-2015 Programs Co-Chair
For our October 15th kick-off meeting, RSSA Home Improvement Center welcomed designers and industry partners into their brand new 26,000 square foot showroom for a sneak preview of their fabulous line-up of home appliances and fixtures. Ali Allahbakhshi and his family, owners of RSSA, arranged for a tasty Italian buffet catered by Roma d’Italia, complete with a variety of specialty pastas, salads, sausage bread and an array of scrumptious desserts.
New President, Gigi Harris, introduced the 2014-2015 board and enlightened members on the events and activities that she and her team have

Gigi also announced the establishment of a new committee, iDOD (Interior Designers Open Dialogue) mentorship program, co-chaired by Julie Mataya and Sonya Zamora. iDOD will create a place where every ASID OC member, whether they are students, emerging professionals or seasoned designers, can exchange knowledge and ideas to help one another grow towards excellence.
Our CEU presentation for the evening was delivered by Liza Hausman, Vice President of Community and Industry Marketing at Houzz. Liza shared current industry trends, including plans and budgets for home remodeling based on a survey of nearly 200,000 respondents. She also addressed how to best set up a professional profile on Houzz and thereby

Throughout the evening, members were enticed to expand their horizons with a fun “Meet Someone New” activity that offered an opportunity to win the grand prize of the evening – a lovely basket of wine accoutrements donated by Cambria. Other raffle prizes included gift cards to Target, Cheesecake Factory and Regal Cinemas, all contributed by Pental, along with a beautiful gift basket provided by RSSA Vintage.
Special thanks to the Allahbakhshi family for their wonderful hospitality throughout the evening, and to Kerry Anderson, of AudioVisions, for once again arranging the audio-visual support for our presentations.

Industry Partner Liaison
YO U R S O U RC E F O R
OUTDOOR LIVING
Hello ASID OC Chapter, I am excited for this opportunity to be the Industry Partner Liaison for the 2014-2015 year. This year’s board of directors is a very inspiring group of members looking to reengage and develop unique ways our chapter can provide its members the best experience possible. My goal as the IP Liaison this year is an extension of that goal. I want to make sure we Celeste Lehmann are providing unique opportunities for IP's to become involved in the ASID chapter. As an IP we are always looking for ways to engage the designers but may not know where to start or what the best approach is. At the Forum in January we are going to lay out all the opportunities for your business to get involved throughout the year with the various activities the chapter holds. We are also going to go over tips and/or advice on how to engage the designers and make sure you are getting the most out of your sponsorship or event being held. Most importantly we are going to go over a couple of successful partnerships formed with designers and IP's that were started by being a part of the ASID OC. If you have ever wanted to learn more about the ASID OC and what it’s like for an Industry Partner to be a part of the chapter the January 13 Forum is for you! We are going to have a great year and I hope to see you there.

Real World Design Week Job Shadowing By Jessie Lloyd, Student ASID This week, as part of ASID’s Real World Design Week, I had the great privilege to job shadow Gigi Harris, owner of Kaizen Interiors and ASID Orange County Chapter’s President for 2014-15.
community in any way I could. This is my fourth shadow day experience since the program's inception. As designers we often take for granted that even the basic processes, tools and knowledge that we practice on a dayto-day are foreign and new to design students. It is such a rewarding experience to mentor a student, if even for a day!” I would definitely recommend that all ASID student members take a chance to enroll in Real World Design Week (happening each November). In addition to the job shadowing and mentoring opportunities, there are also a wide range of virtual shadow days and online presentations that you can sign up for. It’s an invaluable experience to start off your design career and help you learn more about what it is really like to be a designer!
Real World Design Participation Viewpoint By Susana Padilla, Student ASID In its seventh year, Real World Design Week (RWDW) is ASID’s national mentoring program, aimed at matching design students with professionals in the field for a day of job shadowing and hands-on learning. For our day together, Gigi asked me to join her for a client presentation at the Laguna Design Center, as well as a meeting with the ASID Orange County Board members. What a great opportunity, to see firsthand how a successful interior designer and involved ASID member balances the demands of her own work as well as the requirements of the Chapter presidency. We started our day off by setting up three concept boards for a whole house project, including borrowing door and cabinet hardware samples from Greg at B & C Select. It was fascinating to meet Gigi’s client and watch while she presented the various options that she had envisioned for this family and their complete rebuilding of a house. To watch the client’s eyes light up when she began to handle the materials and really understand the vision of Gigi’s design only reaffirmed for me that I am in the right field and can hardly wait to do this myself! After a very successful two-hour meeting with the client, we switched gears completely and sat down with ASID OCC Board members to discuss sponsorship opportunities for industry partners. This roundtable brainstorming session allowed everyone to contribute their thoughts and experience on how to best present the opportunities for industry partners to sponsor and host events for ASID design professionals in the year ahead. For me, it was very valuable to hear about the lessons learned from previous years and events, and to gain a better grasp of just how involved ASID OCC is in this community. From the perspective of a professional designer, here is what Gigi had to say about the experience: “I participated in RWDW as a design student and found so much value in it then that I vowed to continue to give back to the student

CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER
Being given the opportunity to shadow Raad Ghantous for a day was really a fantastic experience to see firsthand what are some of the dynamics within a "day in the life of" a designer. It's so much more than knowing the things we are taught in school; there is a real intangible strength that is essential to maintain order in the chaos that comes in the planning of a 10,000 square foot home, a hotel spa or even "just" a kitchen. I couldn't have guessed picking grout for six bathrooms would be such a process, but more than seeing the management of decisions, it was fun to see that the day consists of challenges that require artistic solutions and Raad was on it whether it was on a lunch napkin or on his lap top, he resolved concerns. As a mentor, he gave me the first lesson in our first email exchange, "Lesson number one: If you don't define yourself in how you want/prefer people to see you they will define you in ways that perhaps don't describe your true value." As a student, it's been an evolving experience in defining myself in a new field. I know who I was and I know what I love, but how does that translate here when I'm still learning? After shadowing Raad, I feel more confident moving forward in the design field. He shared with me some great perspective on brand and the importance of delivering consistent service throughout the entire process with the clients. His best advice for me was to "be authentic", and that resonated with me because I don't want to compromise who I am for the sake of selling a trend. Today reassured me that it is possible to be true to yourself and be successful in design.
We have you covered, Orange County.

On November 6th, Al Nikroo hosted a Program Advisory Committee meeting on campus. Among those in attendance were faculty, Westwood alumni and field professionals. The meeting was joined by the Orange County Engineering Council. Gene Beck, Executive Director of EnviroTech Financial Inc., was the guest speaker and gave a presentation entitled ‘Sustainability in the Energy Business Environment’, which focused on the three “forces” of energy: science and technology, politics and policy, and economics and business.
