FOCUS ON

Efficiency By Julia Molloy

Hi there! I hope you are well. I want to focus on finance today. There has been a lot of movement in the industry, especially as it pertains to billing models and profit. We all want to make and keep more money. But how do we do that? How do you know where you’re making money and where you’re losing it? These are the tough questions that Principal Interior Designers must face every day. Ultimately, you’ve got figure out the formula for becoming as profitable as possible. There are 3 components to a healthier bottom line; efficiency, financial awareness and a high revenue to man-hour ratio. Mastering these components is the winning formula for financial success.

Today we will focus on the most elusive of the three components; efficiency. In this service business, efficiency IS money.

HAVEN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

By Jana Valdez, Allied ASID Principal Interior Designer As an interior designer with a growing practice, I’ve found that it’s crucial to keep an updated and polished portfolio of my work to attract new clients. We spend hours carefully designing and creating unique spaces , meticulously staging them, having them professionally photographed and edited, and finally, we end up with beautiful images of our work. But, then the hard question becomes, “How do we market ourselves?” A gorgeous portfolio doesn’t do much good if no one sees it. Of course, there are the obvious marketing tools, such as a business website and a Google listing, but what else is out there for marketing interior designers?

This past year, I had an eye opening experience that I’d like to share about marketing our interior design services, from a few surprising sources—entering design contests, and posting our work on Houzz, Instagram and Pinterest. Shortly after establishing our design firm, we made it an annual goal to enter design contests as a way to gain credibility for our firm. It was also a great way to reward our design team for their hard work. After all, it’s extremely motivating as a team to win an award after pouring our time and talents into a project. And, as we won multiple awards, it definitely added credibility and built team morale, but what I did not expect is that it was also a powerful marketing tool for our business. After winning several awards for our “North San Antonio” design and remodel project, I began to get phone calls from potential clients who’d seen the announcement of the awards in design magazines, online and on social media. The more exposure the project got with the various print media and social media, the more phone calls we received. Then, I began seeing others post the photos of our work to Pinterest and Instagram, but without tagging us, and I realized that I’d better create accounts for us to tag and promote our own work to get us “in the game”. After posting on Houzz, Instagram and Pinterest, the kitchen images went viral, our Instagram grew, and so did our client base. As a result, we currently have design clients in multiple cities and states, which is something that I would not have dared to dream a few years ago. The “North San Antonio” kitchen went on to become the second most saved kitchen photo on Houzz for 2018 and also

won the ASID Legacy of Design Awards for “Kitchen over $50,000” and overall “Residential- Best in Show” for the Texas Chapter. Finally, it won two regional awards, the 2019 NARI Regional Award for “Best Kitchen Remodel between $100,000 and $150,000” and Luxe Interiors & Design Magazine’s Luxe 2019 RED Award for “Regional Best Kitchen- Austin/ San Antonio.” Through these experiences, I’ve learned a very powerful lesson, with our “accidental marketing” plan—Never underestimate the powerful marketing exposure gained from entering design awards and posting on social media. Don’t be afraid to put your work out there. You just might gain a few new clients and dedicated followers. It’s definitely worth it!

By Julie Reynolds, ASID, NCIDQ ASID Texas Chapter President 2018-2019 In February of 2019, my husband became ill on our trip to Austin and I took him to the new Dell Hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening illness. He was quickly taken to one of the 60 ER bays in this incredible facility. It was in June of this year, that I realized that one of our own ASID Texas Chapter members team was instrumental in specifying the furnishings that functioned so well for us. The Bommarito Group, led by Marla BommaritoCrouch, ASID, RID, FIIDA, LEED AP. I experienced the fact that DESIGN DOES IMPACT LIVES in this thoughtfully planned healing environment. Enjoy reading about the project from inception to completion and seeing some of the furnishings that provide comfort and a little privacy for visitors during stressful times.

The University of Austin Dell Medical School was the first Medical School built from the ground up in 50 years in the USA, so it was an honor to be on the design team. ZGF with Page Architects were the shell architects and Bommarito Group was the furniture designer. This team was challenged with designing Phase I of the Dell Medical School to support the goal of creating an internationally recognized medical school. The projects comprise two buildings that brings together interdisciplinary groups of scientists, clinicians, healthcare professionals, and engineers from multiple fields in the research and clinical environments to promote dynamic interaction, continuous leaning and ingenious discovery and to provide the highest level of medical awareness of treatment.

Highly Successful Design Firms By Marc A. Molinsky As CEO of DesignerAdvantage, I have had the pleasure of working closely with hundreds of interior design firms throughout the United States over the last 15 years. My job has provided me with a unique vantage point into all of the different ways that interior designs manage all of the intricacies of their firms. I was recently reflecting back on my many years of experience in this industry and it occurred to me that the most successful design firms all shared 5 attributes regarding the manner in which they run and manage their businesses. These common 5 attributes are as follows:

1

Great Customer Service – Running a highly successful design firm starts with providing great customer service. In the same manner in which The Four Seasons and Ritz Carltons treat every encounter with their customers with the greatest of care and attention to detail, the most successful design firms use the same approach with their clients. Providing great customer service entails promptly and thoroughly responding to all client requests and proactively keeping them informed on the progress of the project. The best design firms understand that there is no detail too small when it comes to working with high end clients.

3 5

Positive Culture – Firms that have been able to create a culture of excellence and positivity seem to attract and retain the best employees and clients. Positive energy within a firm is generated when the principals create an environment where everyone in the firm is required to be highly respectful of one another at all times. It is also created by challenging each employee – in a positive manner - to perform their work at the highest possible level of quality and excellence.

Know When to Say “Goodbye” – Another common

attribute about successful firms is that they are not shy or hesitant to terminate clients that do not value their work or are not willing to pay for their time. Although every firm has to deal with this type of client at some point, the most successful firms understand that these clients can quickly destroy the morale of themselves and their employees resulting in lower quality work and high turnover – and ultimately less profitability.

- 30 - ISSUE II 2019 | ASID TEXAS CHAPTER

2

Accountability – It is inevitable that some things are going to go wrong on most design projects. The best firms understand that every problem is a golden opportunity for them to demonstrate their integrity and accountability to their clients. In my experience, the most successful firms immediately take full ownership of all problems on a project and they do whatever is necessary to “make

4

Proficient at Billing Time – The best firms are fearless and unapologetic when it comes to billing their time on a project. Even though they might receive negative feedback from their clients from time to time, they continue to bill their time with confidence because they understand that time billing is essential to their firm’s financial well-being and their clients have agreed to it in writing.

Marc is currently the founder and CEO of DesignerAdvantage, Inc., the nation's first and largest provider of business services and software exclusively to the interior design trade. My Experience as an ASID Texas Industry Partner By Simi Kapoor

VP of Business Development, Burlington Materials, Inc My experience as an industry partner is very current and new. Although we have been an importer and distributor of natural stone slabs since 2009 and we moved to Dallas from California in 2015, it wasn’t until 2017 that we decided to add a design gallery to our existing wholesale business to service the DFW design community. I wanted to reach out and let everyone know about our Design Gallery but had no idea where to begin (besides doing a marketing campaign), how to get in front of the interior designers. One of my first client interior designer who stumbled upon my showroom via a fabricator client suggested that I look into becoming an ASID industry partner. I hopped on the ASID website and read almost everything I could. The website was very informative and I signed up to be an Industry partner. I would like to share my thoughts and experiences here to give an idea to professionals who are in the same boat as I am and are looking to increase the exposure of their company or showroom or services to the design community.

As a member, I started getting the monthly newsletter that lists all the ASID events and started adding all the events to my calendar. ASID TX website also lists all the events organized by the industry partners on their website. I started adding those as well to my calendar. My first event was attending the monthly meeting at ASID Fort worth chapter. Being a newbie and not knowing the traffic situation, I reached the venue almost 1 1/2 hour late. I was welcomed with smiling faces of members who were very friendly. I was introduced to so many designers which gave me an opportunity to tell them about my brand new showroom. I met professionals who were industry partners like me and I met reps whom I can potentially partner with. Over the next year, I tried to attend as many events as I could and kept meeting the same and new members. As an industry partner, I had requested to host an ASID event at my showroom. The board members are amazing and try really hard to accommodate everyone and give equal opportunity. We did the Pre Grand Opening of the Design Gallery in Aug 2018 and had over 150 attendees. To me that was a phenomenal number since no one in the design community knew about us before. I cherish the relationships I had made through the ASID community as it has helped me meet so many amazing interior designers and industry partners that are now clients and close friends. We recently held the grand opening of Burlington Design Gallery on April 3rd and it still so sentimental for me as I tell everyone that we had over 400 attendees. ASID has helped me and my team connect with the design community. I want to get more involved and see if I can help in any way and am really thrilled to get an opportunity to be a liaison for new Industry partners. I am looking forward to helping the new IP members and would love to share my personal experiences with them.
