Davidson’s Biggest Small Business…

When in Davidson you definitely do not want to miss visiting The Rumor Mill Market. With a large variety of fun and funky home décor, one-of-a-kind items and unique furniture, The Rumor Mill has become a destination point for locals and out of town guests alike. Founded in August of 2013, The Rumor Mill Market opened its doors with only 13 vendors in 2,000 sq. ft. Almost 6 years later and growing into more than 12,000 sq. ft. with 80+ vendors and a variety of local artisans, The Mill has evolved into the largest retail store in Davidson with consistent new inventory arriving daily. Owners Janie and Scot Slusarick never anticipated how quickly it would grow or how popular it has become, as featured on HGTV, and also a favorite spot for many photographers. “We feel more a part of Davidson today because of all the great people we’ve had the opportunity to meet. We love when our customers share photo’s of their decorated homes with the cool merchandise they have purchased from us. We feel like extended family, because of their connection with our store.” Janie and Scot Slusarick

In September of 2017, Janie & Scot opened a second store on South Main street called Honeysuckle Home. More of a gift boutique, Honeysuckle Home is the perfect place to find interesting and unique items for any occasion. Open 7 days a week and located minutes away from each other in Downtown Davidson, stop by and find out why these shopping destinations have become Davidson’s Happy Place.

Welcome

Vision Davidson remains committed to controlling our own destiny as a distinct, sustainable, and sovereign small town. Our sense of community is rooted in citizens who respect each other; in racial and socioeconomic diversity; and in pedestrian and bicycle orientation; all in the presence of a small liberal arts college. Our history and character guide our future.

Mission

I hope you will take the time to explore and experience the historic area of Davidson, our parks and greenways, our unique shops, restaurants and businesses, and attend our many town-sponsored events throughout the year. There are so many ways to get involved in town: • We have nonprofits that need volunteers: www.townofdavidson.org/nonprofits. • We offer many programs through our parks and recreation department - check them out at www.townofdavidson.org/DPR • Once a year, we offer Civics 101, an eight-week course on the inner workings of our town government. We encourage you to sign up in November for this very informative and fun class: www.townofdavidson.org/Civic101. Rusty Knox Mayor The Town of Davidson

Davidson’s government exists to help citizens in maintaining the town’s unique qualities and to provide superior services to every resident. To this end, the town government of Davidson will operate according to the following core values:

Core Values Citizens are the heart of Davidson, so town government will treat all people fairly, with courtesy and respect. Open communication is essential to an engaged citizenry, so town government will seek and provide accurate, timely information and promote public discussion of important issues. Davidson must be a safe place to live, work, and raise a family, so the town will work in partnership with the community to prevent crime and protect lives, property, and the public realm. Davidson’s historic mix of people in all income levels and ages is fundamental to our community, so town government will encourage opportunities, services, and infrastructure that allow people of all means to live and work here. Davidson’s traditional character is that of a small, historic college town, so land planning will reflect its historic patterns of village-centered growth including connection of neighborhoods, preservation of our historic resources, conservation of rural area, and provision of public spaces. Citizens entrust town government with the stewardship of public funds, so government will provide high quality services at a reasonable cost. Davidson’s economic health is essential to its remaining a sustainable community, so town government will judiciously encourage and guide the location of new business opportunities. Citizens need to move easily throughout the town and region, so government will provide a variety of options, such as sidewalks, bike paths, greenways, connected streets, and transit. Citizens must live in a healthy environment, so town government will protect watersheds, trees, air quality, and other elements of the town’s ecology. The physical, social, and intellectual well-being of Davidson citizens is fundamental to our community, so town government will provide and encourage enjoyable, safe, and affordable recreational and cultural lifelong learning opportunities. As home to Davidson College, the town will engage the college’s faculty, staff and students in constructive communication and collaboration. Davidson exists in proximity to and is interdependent with other jurisdictions, so we strive for local, regional, state and federal cooperation. www.townofdavidson.org

Davidson, NC

Davidson A Quick Overview of What’s Great About The Community Viewed by many as a college town, this former railroad town is known for it’s superb quality of life, the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, beautiful green spaces, excellent public schools, and a vibrant downtown. First-time visitors always remark on the warmth and friendliness they encounter in Davidson. Located along Interstate 77, in the northern part of Mecklenburg County, Davidson is strategically placed for a successful business community. Numerous boutique businesses and mom-and-pop shops have been around for years and take pride in knowing their customers by name. With all the stores in downtown, it’s easy to spend an afternoon walking from shop to shop. Davidson continues to strengthen its reputation as a retail destination with new businesses taking advantage of the amenities offered and choosing to open their doors here. Here, traditions are celebrated, individualism is applauded, and creativity is cherished. Davidson’s historic homes and buildings remain treasured pieces of the past, yet they hold modern restaurants and stores. We are a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly town with a thriving cultural scene...there is always something to do. Restaurants, retail shops, and a popular theater company create a top-notch entertainment atmosphere. We take our food seriously with a wide range of good eats. From casual fast-food to exclusive gourmet, Davidson is considered an excellent dining destination. The town’s festivals reflect residents’ fun-loving nature. Events like the Concerts on the Green and Christmas in Davidson unify the town in pursuit of a good time. Parks, greenways, and Lake Norman provide numerous opportunities for adventures. People who live here appreciate the swimming, boating, water skiing, and more that comes with living close to the water. And finally, the weather: Yes, we do have four seasons. Although some seem to go on forever (we’re looking at you, summer), we really do have the full range of seasons in Davidson.

Location Davidson is in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and situated in the northern part of Mecklenburg County. Located along the banks of Lake Norman this quaint town is only 22 miles from Uptown Charlotte.

I’m looking for busy executives and business owners who feel that retirement is quickly approaching or may have already retired and would like some help. Our typical client normally has a pretty good feeling that there are things that could be done to put them in a better financial position. They just don’t know exactly what those things are! Protecting & Serving Safety is top of the mind for anyone looking for a great quality of life.

Police Department

Fire Department

The Davidson Police Department is committed to professionalism, ethics, accountability, and teamwork. We are dispatched by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Communications.

The Davidson Fire Department is a combination full-time/part-time agency that is responsible for fire protection, rescue services, and emergency medical first response in the Davidson-North Star Fire District and surrounding areas of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The North Star area is outside town limits, in our extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ).

In addition to patrolling Davidson by car and on foot, we also patrol on bike. We have specially trained officers who maneuver through town on bicycle, so you may see them on our greenways, in our parks, and in areas hard to reach by car or foot. Our police department prides itself on being a community-focused agency, and patrolling on bike is another way to interact with Davidson's citizens. Front reception desk hours: Monday - Friday 8AM - 5PM. The on-duty shift supervisor can be reached during non-business hours by dialing 704-892-5131. Chief of Police - Penny Dunn Phone: 704-892-5131 Email: pdunn@townofdavidson.org Davidson Police Department 216 S. Main Street | P.O. Box 579 Davidson, NC 28036 Phone: 704-892-5131 | Fax: 704-896-9733 Always remember to dial 911 in case of an emergency

Dog Walker Watch encourages neighbors to assist local law enforcement by acting as extra eyes and ears while out walking their dogs. The program enhances the partnership between police and the community while providing resources for neighbors to be more aware of their surroundings and how to effectively observe and report suspicious activity. “We are a community that enjoys being outdoors and physically active,” says Chief of Police Penny Dunn. “Incorporating these activities with your best friend to serve the whole community is an opportunity that fits Davidson and helps the Police Department in our goal to be proactive in preventing crime.”

Employing approximately 60 part-time and 30 full-time firefighters, members on duty staff two fire companies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. First responders are certified North Carolina Emergency Medical Technicians. Our firefighters have taken extensive fire fighter training based on guidelines from the NC Department of Insurance and the Office of the State Fire Marshal and have also received additional training in rescue procedures and techniques. The 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the Town of Davidson is the CharMeck911/Communications Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). All 9-1-1 calls from Davidson are routed to CMPD Communications where highly trained telecommunicators answer the calls and determine if police, fire, or medical assistance is needed. Listen carefully and fully answer their questions to insure that the correct emergency services (police, fire, or EMS) are sent to you. 24 Davidson, NC

Navigating Roundabouts

Reverse Angle Parking Municipalities all over the country are having success with reverse-angle parking, and we have approximately twenty spaces in Davidson along Jetton Street.

How does it work? 1. Signal a right turn indicating your intention to park just like parallel parking. 2. Pull past the parking spot and stop just like parallel parking. 3. Reverse into the parking space in just one move.

Why do we have Roundabouts in Davidson? • Roundabouts better handle the increased volume of vehicles expected in the next few years as development continues in Davidson. • Aesthetically, roundabouts reinforce what is unique about Davidson, creating a beautiful tree-lined boulevard with landscaped medians. • Roundabouts maintain the free flow of vehicles into historic downtown and Davidson College. • Griffith Street is safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. • Roundabouts help facilitate the drop-off and pickup at the two local schools.

Frequently Asked Questions Why are roundabouts safer? Roundabouts require a driver to reduce speed when approaching, entering, and moving within the roundabout. This is contrary to an intersection where many drivers are encouraged by a green or yellow light to accelerate to get across the intersection quickly and to “beat the red light.” The only movement at the entry and exit of a roundabout is a right turn, thus reducing the potential frequency and severity of accidents compared to accidents typically occurring during left turns and when traffic crosses an intersection in perpendicular directions. Aren’t traffic signals safer than roundabouts for pedestrians? In many cases a roundabout offers a safer environment for pedestrians than a traffic signal because the pedestrian crossing at a roundabout is reduced to two simple crossings of one-way traffic moving at slow speeds. All vehicles must yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk. Are roundabouts safe near schools? Several roundabouts have been installed 30 Davidson, NC

near schools in the United States, including locations in Montpelier, Vermont; Howard, Wisconsin; University Place, Washington; and Kennewick, Washington. None has reported any significant problems.

How to Navigate a Roundabout The roundabouts at Circles @ 30 are multilane roundabouts. How do I choose which lane to enter and exit? In general, approach a multilane roundabout the same way you would approach any other intersection. If you want to turn left, use the leftmost lane; if you want to turn right, use the rightmost lane. In all cases, drive counterclockwise around the central island. When preparing to exit, turn on your right turn signal as you pass the exit before the one you want to use. What should I do when I’m in a roundabout when an emergency vehicle arrives? Exit the roundabout at the nearest exit and pull over to the right and stop. Do not stop in the roundabout as you might block the path of a large emergency vehicle. How about cycling through a roundabout? The speed of cars through a roundabout is typically15 to 25 mph, close to the speed you ride your bicycle. You can choose to either circulate as a vehicle or use the sidewalk around the roundabout. When circulating as a vehicle, be sure to ride near the middle of the lane so that drivers can see you and will not attempt to pass you. It worries me that I can’t see through the wall and landscaping in the roundabouts. Is that a problem? No, the wall and landscaping are actually an improvement. Because these items block your view across the intersection, you will not be distracted by traffic approaching from the opposite direction and you’ll focus on the most immediate traffic approaching on your left.

What are the benefits? • A greater field of vision than traditional back-out angled parking. • It’s easier than parallel parking. • It’s safer than traditional back-out angled parking - since a driver does not back out blindly into traffic, there are fewer accidents. • It’s safer to get in and out of the vehicleall sides are shielded from oncoming traffic, and it’s easier to go directly to the sidewalk. • It’s safer to load/unload parcels in your trunk because you don’t have to stand in traffic to do so. • More parking spaces than parallel parking because less curb space is used. • It’s easier for larger vehicles to park in angled space than parallel parking • It’s safer for cyclists.

Tips • It’s helpful to use your mirrors. Are you worried that you can’t see the lines to maneuver between them into the the parking space? Use your side mirrors to view the pavement. • Don’t cross the lane of traffic to pull head-into a reverse-angle spot (illegal maneuver). For more information on reverse-angle parking, please visit our website at www.townofdavidson.org/ReverseAngleParking Call 704-892-7591 if you have questions.
