Dr. Travis Nixon received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2002. He has completed a series of courses at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education. This has enabled Dr. Nixon to stay up to date with emerging technologies as well as expand upon his knowledge. He is an active member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, North Carolina Dental Society, Gaston County Dental Society and Gaston Study Club. Dr. Nixon and his wife, Dr. Stephanie Nixon are proud parents of 6 year old Alexandria, 4 year old Beckett and 2 years old Luke. They are active members of Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia.

Gaston County is located in the South-Central Piedmont section of North Carolina. On it’s east border is the Catawba River and Mecklenburg County, to the west is Cleveland County, on the north is Lincoln County and the south is bordered by York County, South Carolina. Gaston was formed from a lower portion of Lincoln County in 1846.

Gaston County is home to a diverse, vibrant and growing business community. The Montcross Area Chamber works pro-actively to develop many partnerships and initiatives with the local towns. These efforts have created a positive and inviting

environment necessary to attract new investments, as well as support established businesses. The local business community continues to grow each day, offering residents and visitors more and more services all done with a smile.

With its proximity to the bustling city of Charlotte, Gaston County residents and visitors truly enjoy the peaceful suburban lifestyle the area offers. The area enjoys four distinctive seasons. Moderate summer temperatures and humidity encourage numerous outdoor activities. The average temperature is about 60° ranging from an average summer temperature in the 80’s to a winter average in the 40’s. Meanwhile, spring and fall are both spectacular with blooming flowers to majestic golden leaves of the trees. The average annual precipitation is 44 inches, and the average relative humidity is 54%. The Catawba River with its South Fork provides the major natural drainage for the area.

Neighborhood, community and regional parks offer a great place for walking and running and most of the parks feature children’s activity areas. Other amenities at these local parks include tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, and horseshoe pits. At the nearby Catawba River, you can boat, fish, water ski and jet ski. The headwaters of the Catawba River extend from the slopes of Grandfather Mountain, near Blowing Rock, to the mountains near Ridgecrest, North Carolina. The basin includes approximately 5,000 miles of waterways and it includes portions of 24 counties in two states (North Carolina and South Carolina).

Businesses are expanding, new businesses are starting and businesses are moving to Belmont, Cramerton and McAdenville, all resulting in economic growth and jobs. The Chamber’s Forward Together five-year plan is contributing to the increase in economic vitality in the participating cities and towns. Forward Together programs were launched in 2012 after 32 companies, foundations and Ted Hall individuals contributed more than $375,000 over President, five years to fund the Chamber’s efforts to create Montcross jobs by strengthening businesses and communities. Area Chamber Supporting entrepreneurs already in business here and encouraging more entrepreneurs to start businesses are key strategies of the Forward Together program. A Chamber staff member provides direct assistance to existing businesses. An Entrepreneurs Roundtable group has been formed, and the Chamber coordinated Gaston County’s first Entrepreneur Summit at Belmont Abbey College last fall.

U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry delivered the keynote address at the first Entrepreneur Summit. A Business Recruiting Council has been formed through a partnership between the Montcross Area Chamber, the City of Belmont, the Town of Cramerton and the Town of McAdenville. These towns adopted a service agreement, contracting with the Chamber to assist the municipal governments in economic development by working to support existing businesses, helping start businesses and recruiting new businesses. The Chamber has assisted more than a dozen businesses interested in establishing an operation or relocating one to the Montcross Area, and several already are in business here. Area Parks Gaston County offers endless outdoor recreational opportunities for all ages. Relax and enjoy a picnic, take a bike ride, view wildlife, go kayaking or rock climbing, and much more. With an abundance of great hiking and walking trails, the area has many scenic destinations for the outdoor enthusiast. Head out on your own or join a group to get some exercise and fresh air. Area parks offer plenty of open space for kids to run, play ball or ride bikes. There is ample playground equipment in these parks such as slides, swings, tunnels, climbing structures and even a splash playground. Other park amenities include picnic areas, tennis courts, basketball courts, playing fields, disc golf course, world-class horseshoe pits, skateboard park, dog parks, and a fishing lake. What services does Belmont Parks and Recreation provide? There are recreational and leisure opportunities to the citizens of Belmont of all ages. Many classes are offered at the J. Paul Ford Recreation Center at 37 East Woodrow Avenue. The department has many athletic opportunities for youth ages 3 to 15 in basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, fast pitch softball, tennis, and volleyball. There is also an active senior citizens group, the Belmont Gadâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Abouts, who have an activity every week. In addition, the department provides exercise classes for senior adults: Senior Stretch, Senior Line Dance, and Water Exercise- Aquaducks. 10

Davis Park and ballfield can be reserved for practices, birthdays, reunions, etc. The Belmont Parks and Recreation Department puts on nine annual events and festivals each year and partners with the Montcross AreacChamber of Commerce and Belmont Merchants Association on two others. What kind of opportunities are there for individuals, clubs, or groups to volunteer their services or skills within the Parks and Recreation Department? We accept volunteer coaches for our sports activities. All of our volunteer coaches for youth sports have to pass a background check. What kind of plans does the Belmont Parks and Recreation Department have for the future? (i.e. new parks, new programs, etc.)

24 S. Main Street, Belmont, NC 28012 Stowe Park includes a concession stand, playground equipment, pre-school playground equipment, picnic shelter, picnic tables, walking track, natural amphitheater with gazebo, soccer / football field, and restrooms. Stowe Park now holds the annual GaribaldiFest, Fall Festival, Summer Celebration, movies and concerts, and enjoyment for its daily visitors.

The City of Belmont is building its first new park in over 30 years on Brook Street in East Belmont. Ebb Gantt Park will feature two full-size soccer fields that can be converted to several youth fields, a 1/2 mile asphalt walking track, playground, picnic shelter, and restrooms. This park will enable the Parks and Recreation Department to move much of its soccer program from its baseball fields, which will free those facilities for baseball. Construction began in March 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by November, 2013.

A new park is under construction in east Belmont, Ebb Gantt Park, with two soccer fields, 1/2 mile walking trail, picnic shelter, playground, and restrooms. Park to be finished in late 2013. Working on designs for the River Park at 1400 East Catawba Street, and plan to construct during 2014-2015. A Skateboard Park on Chronicle Street, renovations of Davis Park, and upgrades on existing parks are all planned after that. www.montcrossareachamber.com

The opening of Goat Island Park and Greenway in 2012 has been a huge success for the town. Although this park is open, it will still be 2 – 3 more years until it’s completely finished. Cramerton has received numerous grants from Adopt-a-Trail, Recreational Trails, and PARTF grant agencies over the last 10 years that have helped with projects like the C.B Huss Addition, Riverside restrooms and greenway, Goat Island, mapping and brochures, and bridges.

In 2010, Town Council, Mayor Farrell Buchanan and Town Manager, Gene McCombs applied for a community development block grant. The amount of $1 million was awarded to McAdenville. A majority of this grant invested in restoring five 19th century buildings on Main Street to provide housing for low to moderate income familes. A portion of the grant has covered the cost for the consruction of the park.

What are the amenities of the park? It features playground equipment, benches, picnic table, and a concrete pad that serves as a stage for performances.

Does the town of McAdenville own the land where the park is located? No, the land is leased from Belmont Land and Investment, which is Pharr Yarns, the textile mill that has essentially shaped the town of McAdenville.

Was any public tax money used for the park? No, not for construction, only maintenance. 28

Can the park be rented for special occasions? Yes. It is available for birthday parties, family reunions, wedding receptions, etc.

What are the fees and how does someone inquire about renting it? Please call McAdenville Town Hall at 704-824-3190 to discuss renting the park. The fees are associated with residency – Residents $50 refundable deposit; Non-Residential $100, with $50 refundable. The refund will be based on the park’s condition after the event is held.

Are there any other parks or greenways planned for the future of McAdenville? McAdenville is already a part of the Carolina Thread Trail. There are no plans for any additional town parks at this time.

Located along the banks of the South Fork River, this area was first settled in 1881 and was then known as Spring Shoals. In 1883, the local textile mill was purchased by Rufus McAden and became McAden Mill and soon the state franchised the community of McAdenville. Ever since then it has been a community built around the textile mill. The mill was hit hard by the Great Depression, and closed in 1935. The mill employees struggled through the aftermath of the Depression until the mill was bought by Pharr Yarns and things began to turn around for the residents of this close-knit community. In 1956, some of the individuals from the McAdenville’s Mens Club decided it would be nice to decorate a few living trees around the Community Center. Nine trees were lit that year. For many years, the Christmas lights have been delighting visitors of all ages! No other place allows you to embrace and experience the magic of the Christmas season quite like McAdenville does today. This annual holiday light show is one of the nation's largest. Over 500,000 red, white and green lights decorate some 375 trees throughout town with special displays that surround the lake at the town’s center.

Dream comes true for Stanley The dream for a community park in Stanley has been a long one. For more than ten years, Tug Deason, Stanley Director of Parks and Recreation wanted a place where young people could play baseball. He started selling peanuts to raise money for the project. Tug approached the Stanley Revitalization Committee in 2008 to hear their thoughts about making his dream a reality. Soon after, Tug and Stanley Mayor, Frank Guida, talked about their vision of a park in town with new Stanley residents, Ron and Katherine Harper. Without being asked and without hesitation, Mr. Harper said “I will start the ball rolling with a $55,000 donation if you will call it Harper Park. This in turn created much enthusiasm among the people in Stanley and fund-raising efforts soon began. They had golf tournaments, TV raffles, giant yard sales, bake sales, contests, games, sold inscribed pavers, hand-print tiles, trees, benches and sponsorships within the park. Enough money was raised to purchase seventeen acres of land for the park on Blakesnake Road. A state grant was applied for in 2010 and in May 2011 the Town was awarded a matching - funds grant from the State of North Carolina for $500,000. Construction soon started and many residents and companies helped stretch the funds by donating their time and/or materials. Residents and town officials are very proud that the total construction cost of $1,250,000 did not require any Town of Stanley taxpayer funds. Ron Harper was very excited about the plans for the park and said, “Harper Park will not be the biggest park in North Carolina, but it will be the best”. Sadly, Mr. Harper passed away on April 14, 2012. However, he did live long enough to see the completion of the parking areas, most of the lighting and excavation for the play areas and fields. A grand opening was held on May 11, 2013 for the first public park in Stanley. The new recreation facility is named Harper Park for Katherine Harper and the late Ron Harper of Stanley. The Harper’s made a sizable donation to start the construction of the park and the remaining money was raised through other donations and fundraising efforts.

Town Council Stanley boasts a wonderful local attraction at the Brevard Station Museum. The museum’s name is in honor of the importance that the railroad played in the origination of the town. Visitors can spend hours browsing through the varied array of artifacts and exhibits pertaining to the area.

Located in Belmont, this private, nonprofit corporation was founded in 1956 by the Sisters of Mercy. Residential services and innovative programs are provided for children and adults with varying degrees of intellectual developmental disabilities, some of whom are medically fragile. New programs and facilities have been developed as a direct response to the ever changing needs of Holy Angels residents, their families and the community. Programs include the Morrow Center, four Community Group Homes, five ICF/MR group homes (Intermediate Care Facilities for the Mentally Retarded), Little Angels Child Development Center (on-site child care), Great Adventures (social club for residents and members of the community with disabilities), Camp Hope and Cherubs Café & Candy Bouquet (vocational support) in downtown Belmont.
