Welcome The Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present this Welcome Guide. Here you’ll learn why these communities are such great places to live, work, play and do business, and find out about some of Gaston County’s best-kept secrets.
Gaston County offers quaint communities with dedicated residents and business leaders whose involvement and actions have made this county what it is today.
Located in the South-Central Piedmont section of North Carolina, Gaston County is fortunate to be comfortably removed from the urban congestion of Charlotte, NC, yet close enough to take advantage of urban amenities and resources.
With the lights of the big city of Charlotte shining in the background, the communities located on the eastern side of Gaston County are finding their places on center stage with people looking
for a quiet slice of hometown life without sacrificing the amenities that a larger metropolitan area affords.
Ideal weather, a diversified economy teeming with good jobs, a wide variety of housing, an excellent education system, as well as top-notch health care, are why this area is earning a great reputation.
From well-maintained, amenity-filled parks and winding trails to highly organized sports leagues for all ages, Gaston County is brimming with outstanding opportunities for recreational activities - both indoors and out.
Numerous family-friendly events occur on a regular basis. Residents and visitors enjoy a variety of historical and artistic exhibitions, musical street concerts, festivals, local farmers markets, as well as many more celebrations throughout the year. a

SPARK YOUR IMAGINATION on an ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY
∂
A long lost land is being rediscovered at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Nestled in the heart of the Belmont garden, this forgotten place has been unearthed between manicured beds and old forest, offering a journey of fascination and adventure. ∑
∏ ∂ Visitors who enter the Lost Hollow walk through a circular gathering space known as The Commons. Here they pass over the All Seeing Eye for protection. ∑ The Fireplace Cave features a giant firplace arch that is actually the entrance to a cave where there is a dazzling night sky. ∏ The bright red rotating aviary once housed birds at Daniel Stowe’s home. π The Hillside Theatre is a colorful outdoor performance venue alongside Sunken Pond. ∫ Moon Keep is an observation tower overlooking Sunken Pond. 12
MONTCROSS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The Kimbrell Children’s Garden is a magical place for the young and the young at heart. It’s part new garden and part old world, but its places are there for all to explore. Here imagination is the key to discovering all of its beauty. Guests are invited over the all seeing eye of protection to enter the kingdom of Lost Hollow. They can explore the banks of Sunken Pond, sing like a bird in The Aviary, survey the land from Moon Keep and explore the mysterious Fireplace Cave. The opening came more than two years after the Garden announced that Gastonia textile executive Duke Kimbrell and his wife Dot were giving the Garden a $2 million challenge gift. More than 200 people contributed to raise more than $4 million, and after nearly a year of construction this spectacular garden opened in October 2014. Designed with the Garden’s founder in mind, Lost Hollow includes three acres developed and a host of places to explore. Traversing meandering paths, guests can explore a variety of destinations with an old world feel. They are centered around Moon Keep (a nod to the fortified structures of castles in the middle ages), complete with flying buttresses and moat. From there, guests can choose to venture along the Balconette, an elaborate railing along the pond that overlooks much of this garden in the hollow. From there families can explore Fireplace Cave or a giant 12-foot-tall aviary, both of which are tributes to the legacy of Daniel Stowe. The cave’s entrance is a giant limestone fireplace surround from Stowe’s estate and the aviary, which once housed

birds in his garden, is now a spinning play space for children. “Imagination really is the key to exploring this Garden,” said Kara Newport, executive director of Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. “But most importantly, the expectations of a typical botanical garden are tossed to the wind. We want children to touch the plants. We want them to climb on the rock walls. We want them to put their hands in the pond. “Mr. Kimbrell said the reason he made this gift to the Garden was because he wants children to more fully appreciate beauty, and we also want them to appreciate the outdoors and have a life-long love of gardening.” The plants of Lost Hollow range from sweeps of Sporbolus, a fine-textured ornamental grass to more familiar black-eyed Susan. Japanese maple, eastern red cedar and the native big leaf magnolia accentuate the landscape and blend with formal gardens on one side and a successional forest on the other. Lost Hollow was designed by New York Landscape designer W. Gary Smith who is credited with immensely creative gardens all over the country, including the new children’s garden at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Texas and Enchanted Woods at Delaware’s Winterthur Garden. Rodger Builders was the general contractor. Sitework Studios and Matthews Architecture both of Asheville also worked on the project. a

BELMONT
BELMONT IS ON A SUCCESS PATH. IT’S NO WONDER THIS COMMUNITY IS BEING DISCOVERED AND RECOGNIZED AS A DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY.
Belmont’s prime location along I-85 is a strong contributor to its current success and its prospects for the future. Located just 12 miles west of uptown Charlotte, this city is set along the banks of the Catawba River and Lake Wylie. Belmont is both a commuter city and a city with jobs for its residents.
The success of Belmont is shown in the continued growth of the city. The past decade has seen great growth and expansion. The population has increased and Belmont has welcomed and embraced this growth.
With the revitalization of the downtown area, the city underscores the value of preserving, building, and promoting its small-town heritage while meeting the demands of everyday living.
Belmont’s award winning historic downtown is a magnet for both residents and visitors seeking a little charm, a lot of fun and that special shopping discovery.
Retail options from “mom and pop” shops to major retail brands as well as restaurants from fast food favorites to upscale dining. Belmont has it all.
Belmont has a diverse culture of business from all spectrums, everything from technology to manufacturing. The presence of Belmont Abbey College and Gaston College also attracts more businesses and talent to this great city.
Mere minutes from the center of Belmont, is the Catawba River, where thousands of people each year enjoy many outdoor activities such as boating, kayaking, and fishing.
Whatever the reason for visiting Belmont, visitors are always invited to stay a little longer, enjoy favorite attractions, or even make this warm and friendly community their home. a

Q&A }
2014 Belmoht Citizen of the year What is your favorite thing about Belmont?
In a word, “everything.”
It is a cozy town, with warm, friendly people. The downtown area is walkable and inviting. Local restaurants and shops are magnets for both residents and visitors. Caravan Coffee and Dessert Bar, the unofficial Belmont Embassy, is particularly high on my list. Belmont has a rich history and a promising future. Formerly a textile community, Belmont is now thriving as an entrepreneur hot bed. Yarn mills have been converted to vibrant new businesses, such as an antique mall, a brewery and a bisque importing company. Beyond that, specialized small businesses are meeting the needs of pet owners, walkers and runners, bicyclists, and others with specific interests. Belmont is the entertainment capital of Gaston County. Friday Night Live is a phenomenal outdoor summer concert series that brings the community, county and region together. The city has exceptional parks, including the new Ebb Gantt Park and the forthcoming Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park. Stowe Park remains the pride of Belmont and location of numerous festivals and events. Belmont is a city of opportunity. It is home to several organizations with missions to serve community needs. Each of these organizations provides an opportunity to volunteer. An opportunity to volunteer is an opportunity to make a difference. Belmont is a great place to live, work, play and volunteer.

Chronicle Mill event sets new Chamber record with more than 350 attending
Belmont's historic and long closed Chronicle Mill came to life on April 23, 2015, when more than 350 Chamber members and friends explored the massive mill and learned of redevelopment plans during the Montcross Area Chamber’s "Network After Work." The Chamber coordinates at least one “Network After Work” each month at a business site, where members make contacts, enjoy refreshments and learn about host businesses. Chronicle Mill owners John and Jennifer Church of Cramerton are at the center front of this photo with close to half of the participants in the event. The others were on tours, or too busy networking and making business contacts to pose for a photo. When fully developed, the property will feature an event venue accommodating several hundred, commercial office and retail space and potentially a large brewery and a boutique hotel. The Chronicle was Belmont's first textile mill. Construction began in 1901 and the mill opened in 1902. It closed in 2006.

MOUNT HOLLY
Q&A }
What makes the City of Mount Holly unique?
INCORPORATED IN 1879, MOUNT HOLLY CONTINUES TO THRIVE BECAUSE OF ITS SMALL TOWN CHARM, FRIENDLINESS, WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS.
The residents of Mount Holly are known for their Southern hospitality and following their passion to make the town a great place to live, visit and invest in the future.
Mount Holly is booming with a local economy of new developments, conservation for historical resources, cultural experiences and an exceptional quality of life.
Located just 20 minutes from downtown Charlotte, this tight - knit community enjoys the benefits of all the services of a major metropolitan area, while successfully maintaining its distinct small-town charm.
With more than 13,000 residents, Mount Holly takes pride in its historic essence, which is noted through its lovely brick downtown buildings, beautiful neighborhoods and attractive homes.
The business sector is strong and growing. Dozens of shops line Main Street, representing everything from a general store to boutiques. Delightful restaurants are nestled between the shops, offering an all-around shopping and dining experience for patrons.
The city uses its high-quality resources through the town government, highly rated schools, and the newly opened 38,000 square - foot CaroMont Regional Medical Center emergency facility.
There are numerous parks featuring amenities such as trails, athletic fields, playground equipment, and much more.
Mount Holly is a flourishing community with tree-lined streets, abundant recreational venues, and a beautiful setting along the banks of the slow-moving Catawba River. With a pleasant family-oriented environment and a strong business community, Mount Holly is a desirable place to live and work. a
Mount Holly is a city with a progressive vision, which seeks to increase the quality of life for its citizens. Mount Holly is one of the only towns in the entire region to go through a Visioning Process, where participants, many of them citizens, had a choice in deciding what goals the City should focus on accomplishing. This citizen-inspired “vision” was officially adopted on-paper in the form of the Strategic Vision Plan of 2008. During the past several years the City has worked to accomplish many goals listed in the Plan. We are currently working on updating the Strategic Vision Plan, which will give the citizens and business owners a voice in the planning process for Mount Holly in the years to come. The city’s unique location along the Catawba River and Mountain Island Lake make it a destination point for folks looking to enjoy nature, but these opportunities through development of greenways, mountain bike trails and parks must continue to develop. Mount Holly’s close proximity to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, Uptown Charlotte, I-85 and I-485, also present unique opportunities. Between the years 2000-2013, Mount Holly saw a 48% growth increase, which means that the word may be getting out about one of the best kept secrets in the Charlotte area.

Retail Recruitment and Business Retention Program Look at any successful, vibrant community, and you’ll find a common theme - a good mix of thriving businesses. These shops, restaurants, service providers, and entertainment venues don’t just happen. It requires leaders who understand what it takes to recruit and retain these businesses and can get the job done. The City of Mount Holly has partnered with Buxton, a consumer analytics firm, to strengthen its retail development efforts. Buxton will identify the specific retailers that match the shopping preferences of consumers in the City’s trade area, and provide information that can help local business owners grow their businesses. City staff, the Mayor and Council members, have marketed Mount Holly to various retailers over the years without having any basis on what firms would even consider Mount Holly as an opportunity for relocation or expansion. Previously, the City has had no data or marketing material to provide the restaurants or retailers either. This has led to months of calls and emails simply to get them to respond via an in-person meeting, call or email. Obviously this approach has not worked well. While retail development programs have traditionally relied on basic demographic information, the Mount Holly’s Retail Recruitment and Business Retention Program will utilize customer insights that go beyond demographics to present a convincing case to retailers seeking growth opportunities. Buxton’s proprietary web-based real estate platform, SCOUT®, will give local leaders the ability to analyze retail matches and support development decisions.

CRAMERTON NOT ONLY IS CRAMERTON A TOP CHOICE TO CALL HOME, IT IS RICH IN COMMUNITY SPIRIT AND HAS MUCH TO OFFER VISITORS, RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES.
In direct contrast to the surrounding urban congestion of Charlotte, NC, this area is rich in homegrown hospitality. Residents here value quiet streets and safe neighborhoods.
This once thriving mill town, boasts a tremendous quality of life with beautiful tree lined streets, a growing economy, and a top-notch parks & recreation department.
Cramerton is the perfect blend of historic and modern, continually moving forward to a progressive future. Economic development for the town includes recent state-of-the-art multi-use residential developments. This means new housing opportunities as well as retail space for potential businesses.
The revitalization of the Cramer Mountain Club and golf course that closed in 2012 is another plus for this community. About 200 Cramer Mountain residents joined together to redesign and reopen the club which includes a new pool, tennis courts, lodge and revamped golf course. Cotton Bar and Grill is the new restaurant that overlooks the golf course.
Located along the banks of the South Fork River and centered in the middle of the town is Goat Island Park. This 30-acre park and greenway will captivate young and old with plenty of recreation opportunities. a

Jeff K. Ramsey
Fourth Generation Cramerton Resident What makes the town of Cramerton special?
Our Town Slogan in Cramerton, “Pride in our Past and Faith in our Future” is extremely appropriate in describing my Hometown. Cramerton is in the planning process of the celebration of our Centennial this October 16-18, 2015. As we look back to our Past History we realize what a rich heritage we have to celebrate. Our first 75 years of our textile heritage was living in a model mill village and was described by author Audrey Van Pelt’s Pictorial book that describes Cramerton as “The Best Place I Ever Did Live!” Since all our textile mills have been shut-down since 1980, Cramerton had to transform into a thriving small town that offers new locally owned restaurants, a coffee and ice cream shop, a hometown drug store, and other small businesses. This has been great for our residents and also attracting new people to our quality of life and also safe community. The citizens of Cramerton have also enjoyed having the opportunity to attend the new Stuart W. Cramer High School in our area. Cramerton has been in the forefront for offering residents the best recreation activities in Gaston County. We just opened the premier park in Gaston County called Goat Island which offers everything our residents want to have in their community such as: walking/biking trails, children’s playground equipment, disc golf, canoe/kayaking, fishing piers, a dog park, an outside fitness area, and much more. Another great asset to our community is the reopening of the Cramer Mountain Club that will offer the best golfing in the area. We have always looked at our past history and followed our founding father Stuart W. Cramer’s philosophy to create the best place to raise a family and provide the best quality of life for our citizens here in Cramerton. Our Town is very unique because we truly have family and lifelong friends who are like family that live here in our community. I have been truly blessed to live in the Town of Cramerton and raise my family in this small town atmosphere and caring community that I call HOME. www.montcrossareachamber.com

the Recreation Center and Stuart Cramer High School throughout the weekend. In addition to the traditional football game during most homecomings, this celebration will include a golf tournament, concerts, carnival, fireworks, and numerous dining opportunities. Photos, artifacts, and memorabilia relating to the history of Cramerton have been loaned or donated and will be displayed during the Centennial Celebration. Not everybody or everything makes it to 100, but Cramerton can boast that they have reached that milestone. The Town of Cramerton will host its Centennial Celebration and Homecoming on October 16th18th, 2015 for everyone in the community to enjoy and celebrate together! There will be festivities in Town Center, on Goat Island, at
Special banners have been designed and are being displayed on the decorative poles throughout town until December 2015. These banners were offered for sponsorship, included the option of having names/company logo’s added. These banners will be given to the sponsors once they are taken down at the end of the year.

Goat Island • Goat Island is 30 acres, wooded with mature trees, vegetation and wetlands. Special measures were taken to preserve these natural elements throughout the development of the park. • Phase I of the Goat Island Project cost $1,452,870 and included a 181 ft. pedestrian bridge, playground equipment, 18-hole disc golf course, two picnic shelters, observation pier, two canoe landings, and the open air amphitheater located in the Town Center business area. • Phase II of the Goat Island Project is budgeted to cost $1,656,200 and included the pedestrian bridge connecting the Town Center business district, observation pier, dog park, playground equipment for 2-5 year olds, a covered fit pavilion that features exercise equipment, outdoor ping pong tables, permanent corn hold boards, and additional ADA accessible greenway and walking trails. • Goat Island received its name from textile engineer Stuart Cramer, who facilitated the exponential growth of the town and for whom the town was named. Mr. Cramer released goats on the island to control vegetation in the early 1900’s.

Martha Burris
Lowell City Council Member What is something that most people do not know about Lowell?
Lowell is a true small town with the conveniences of a larger community at our fingertips. We are nestled between the largest shopping area in Gaston County with part of Franklin Square in the City of Lowell and the rural setting of George Poston Park. There is an excitement about our future. We have land and space to grow. Local residents and business leaders are working together to plan for major changes that will add services and features to enhance livability of our city. Our community is situated along the South Fork River with new housing developments and a greenway taking advantage of the natural beauty of our area. We have one of the lowest tax rates in Gaston County along with reasonable water and sewer rates. Our city takes pride in providing strong city services to meet the needs of our local residents. Lowell is a perfect location for people who commute for work and play. Residents come home to a quiet, friendly, connected community but can be in the center of Charlotte within twenty minutes. Two exits to I-85 allowing residents quick and easy access to the amenities of the Charlotte Region and Douglas International Airport. Lowell is a family-centered community with local recreation and activities for children. We offer recreational opportunities for children through our City Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. Lowell’s public schools, Lowell Elementary and Holbrook Middle School have strong community support. In addition, Lowell is the home of Gaston Christian School, the largest private school in Gaston County. Lowell offers a variety of retail opportunities including restaurants, clothing stores, a yoga studio, hair salons, and the largest selection of car and motorcycle dealerships in the area. Come enjoy the warmth and hospitality of our community!

In 2014, Lowell celebrated 135 years since its founding in 1879. To mark the occasion, a History Committee, headed by Councilwoman Martha A. Burris, was formed. The group decided to hold a monthly open house at the Lowell Community Center, each with a different theme such as Churches, Work, and City Services, with displays built around historic materials that had been gathered over the years. The Sunday afternoon displays soon became a sort of reunion for visitors. They greeted old friends and neighbors, some unseen for decades, traded histories and current information. Visitors also contributed names and missing information, as well as additional contributions of materials of all sorts to the Committee. During the year, the committee donated 1300 man-hours, catalogued hundreds of photographs, deeds, books, newspaper articles, and various miscellaneous items including a rationing book form World War II and many maps. Census data from 4 periods was crossreferenced with family histories and other documents to create a database with 6,200 individual names. A timeline of Lowell’s history was created. The City’s records were searched to capture the names of all those who had served in city government. Though the specific birthday is now passed, the Committee has set up permanent displays of photographs and information in the Community Center. As new contributions continue to arrive, they will be cataloged, cross referenced and displayed whenever possible.

McADENVILLE McADENVILLE OFFERS A LESS HURRIED PACE, AN EXCELLENT QUALITY OF LIFE, AND A REAL SENSE OF COMMUNITY.
Located along the banks of the South Fork River, this area was first settled in 1881 and was then known as Spring Shoals. In 1883, the local textile mill was purchased by Rufus McAden and became McAden Mill and soon the state franchised the community of McAdenville. Ever since then it has been a community built around the textile mill.
The mill was hit hard by the Great Depression, and closed in 1935. The mill employees struggled through the aftermath of the Depression until the mill was bought by Pharr Yarns and things began to turn around for the residents of this close-knit community.
Downtown McAdenville is a testament to the strength and character of small town life. The town still retains a touch of the past with some of the mill houses still standing. Main Street is lined with the picturesque brick buildings that house the post office, credit union, art gallery, and local restaurant. McAdenville Village is a modern new homes community with houses designed to compliment the historic character of the town.
Located in the former Community Center is the William J. Pharr Family YMCA and is dedicated to positively impacting the quality of life of everyone in the community, whether young or old.
With a tradition that began in 1956 when the local Men’s Club decided to decorate some trees with Christmas lights, McAdenville is now known as “Christmas Town USA”. The annual holiday light show has grown to be one of the nation's largest. Each year, over 500,000 red, white and green lights decorate nearly 400 trees throughout town with special displays that surround the lake at the town’s center. a
Q&A }
Steve & Shirley Rankin McAdenville Residents
What makes the town of McAdenville special?
Not only is McAdenville a special place for us, but a very special place for thousands of visitors each December. I don’t think there’s any town in North Carolina or maybe the nation with a population of only 700 residents that dresses up their town so beautifully that 600,000 visitors travel from near and far each December to view our town in all of its glory. Not to mention those who visit thru the magic of the internet. My Christmas Town Web Site www.mcadenville-christmastown.com had 148,550 hits (visitors) last December. My roots run deep in this town…I was born and raised here, as were my Mom and Dad. My grandparents on my Dad’s side were also natives of McAdenville. In 1962, my wife Shirley and I purchased my “old home place” from my mother. We renovated the house from front to back, started a family, and settled into a community. The annual Easter Egg Hunt, Community Day Celebrations, Yule Log festivities, Christmas Town Bowl Parade and the home of Christmas Town USA, are a few of the town traditions. All of the programs that the Pharr Family YMCA provides for our youth and adults, brings families together and forms a bond with the residents that resonate year round. The small town of McAdenville is like no other place, a town where four church steeples rise high above our town into the Carolina Blue sky. Where neighbor knows neighbor, where the McAdenville Woman’s club works hard year round raising money to help McAdenville residents, the Elementary School, and provide college scholarship to our local children. We all know and love Andy and Barney’s fictitious town of Mayberry. If there’s ever been a real Mayberry, it would be our home town of McAdenville…which we love and cherish dearly.

Town Named After: Rufus Yancey McAden (1833-1889) Pharr Yarns has been located in McAdenville since 1939. It began as a joint venture between Robert Stowe, Daniel Stowe and William Pharr. Today the company is privately owned by the Pharr-Carstarphen family. Pharr Yarns, one of the Country’s leading manufacturers of differentiated carpet yarns and high performance yarns observed its 75th year in business with a spectacular, family-oriented celebration for past and present employees and McAdenville residents. Held in October 2014, the celebration included a ceremony, live music, amusement rides, food, and fireworks. Vintage photos depicted a timeline of Pharr Yarns’ history in Gaston County. Pharr Yarns is poised for a bright future with its rich heritage, family-friendly atmosphere and a tradition of innovation.
He was a Wake Forest College graduate. He served in the NC legislature 1862-67; speaker of the House in 1866; retired from politics in 1867 and became president of the 1st National Bank of Charlotte, NC. He was also president of two railroad companies. In 1881, he turned his business energies in the direction of manufacturing, and erected in Gaston County one of the largest cotton mills (McAden Mill No. 1) in the state. Mr. McAden was devoted to his successful business career and McAden cotton mills gave employment to over 500 people.

STANLEY
VISITORS TO THIS LITTLE TOWN ARE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY THE SITES TO SEE, STORES TO SHOP, AND HISTORY TO EXPLORE. There is no place like home, especially when home is Stanley. Low population density, low crime rates, excellent schools and a suburban, semi-rural lifestyle are some of the reasons that people have made Stanley their home.
This area got its start back in the civil war era when pioneers began settling in this area. It is one of the oldest towns in Gaston County and has remained one of the smallest throughout the years but offers a growing economy. From its very beginning as a small railroad station, simple living is the credo in Stanley, where N.C. Highway 275 and N.C. Highway 27 converge in the northeastern part of the county.
Manufacturing is one of the top industries with several factories calling Stanley home. Other businesses include banks, fast food and sit-down restaurants, medical and dental offices, gift and specialty stores, and many other independent small businesses. The local businesses provide quality items and excellent service with a small-town touch of friendliness.
Stanley boasts a wonderful local attraction at the Brevard Station Museum. The museum’s name is in
honor of the importance that the railroad played in the origination of the town. The museum highlights family life and work during the early years of this community. Visitors can spend hours browsing through the varied array of artifacts and exhibits dedicated to the preservation of a rich and colorful history.
Recreation is a stong component of life in Stanley, thanks to an active Parks and Recreation Department. A host of recreational activities for youth, adults and seniors are offered through the Department.
Harper Park is home to many amenities and plays host to numerous events and programs throughout the year including hosting the Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament in 2013 and 2014. This $1.4 million facility includes two baseball fields, basketball court, horseshoe area, playground, splash pad, hiking & bike trail, picnic area, and a restroom and concession building.
A year-round calendar of city-wide special events provides fun in a family environment. In October, Country Fest is a community celebration for the whole family and highlights the best of Stanley. a
Q&A }
Heath Jenkins
Stanley Town Manager
What makes Stanley a great place to live? Stanley is “A Friendly Place” and that is a fact, not just a slogan. Stanley is a small enough town so that many people know each other, and if they don’t, they speak and get to know each other so strangers become friends sooner rather than later. Stanley is a very sports-minded town and it shows in the popularity of ball games at Harper Park and at the local schools. The high level of participation in Dixie Youth Baseball and Pop Warner Football is remarkable. The success of Stanley youth teams has also been extraordinary. Having two Pop Warner National Championship teams and State Championship teams in Dixie Youth baseball is a great source of community pride with the people of Stanley. The October Country Fest is a very popular annual event in Stanley that brings in over 10,000 people to the downtown area on the first weekend in October. Not only do the people of Stanley play hard, they work hard as well. There is a strong base of industrial firms in and near Stanley, and Stanley has managed to endure the loss of textile jobs in recent decades by attracting companies who serve a diverse variety of markets. There are many great neighborhoods throughout Stanley from moderate to upscale, apartments and senior housing, as well as many farms. Stanley has excellent schools. It all adds up to a great town for families and people of all ages. www.montcrossareachamber.com

The Town of Stanley uses a notification system called Blackboard Connect to keep the community informed about emergency notifications and community outreach. What is the Blackboard Connect service? The Blackboard Connect service allows authorized civic leaders to create and rapidly disseminate time-sensitive messages to every telephone number stored in the notification database. With the Blackboard Connect service, authorized users can send thousands of messages in minutes. Only authorized officials are allowed access to the system. How does the service work? Authorized officials compose and record a voice and text message. That message is then delivered to individual telephones, cell phones, and text-receiving devices in the notification database. What types of messages will be sent using the service? Any message regarding the safety or welfare of our community would be disseminated using the Blackboard Connect service. Examples include severe weather warnings and updates, hazardous traffic or road conditions inside the city or affecting local routes, and any other situation that could impact the safety, property, or welfare of the citizens. Stop to consider when you need to purchase a product or service that it is to your advantage to BUY LOCAL. Not only do you help the local economy by supporting a fellow business but you also keep your dollars local by contributing to the tax base of your town rather than that of another community.
Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.
Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes.
The Montcross Area Chamber promotes BUY LOCAL as a way businesses can help each other.
