Welcome to Whether you are a new resident, a current resident learning more about your hometown, or a visitor, I’d like to share some information about our lovely community.

As Huntersville’s former Mayor and now Executive Director of the Huntersville Regional Chamber, I am very proud of all the amenities we have in the area that add to a top-notch quality of life.

Huntersville is a mere 15 minutes from Charlotte and yet, we have urban, rural and lake access in our town. We are at the crossroads of I-77 and I-485 and just a short jaunt to I-85. Our transportation network gives residents and visitors easy access to just about anywhere you want to travel in the South! Huntersville is an easy day trip to both the mountains and the beaches, but to be honest, there is so much in our region, we’ll keep you busy checking out all the events and activities and sites around us.

We have access to both Mountain Island Lake and Lake Norman, and simply by checking our Chamber website at www.HuntersvilleChamber.com, you’ll be able to find destinations like the flagship Discovery Place Kids museum, Carolina Raptor Center, Latta Plantation, Rural Hill, Birkdale Village, Carolina Renaissance Festival and more. We have an extensive greenway program, active Parks and Recreation programs for all ages, and parks galore and of course, tastes from all kinds of restaurants and microbreweries and even our own historical water spring (Midas Spring Water) and local distillery (Murto Made).

For decades, Huntersville has poised itself for growth, cognizant of the Charlotte regional growth and the potential challenges that would arise. As a result, Huntersville, along with northern neighboring communities Davidson and Cornelius, were the only three towns in the country that held building moratoriums together nearly thirty years ago so they could plan for the future of their towns. Creating a diversified tax base, with a number of large corporate entities, has allowed the Town of Huntersville to keep the tax rate low, while working to improve facilities and programming and public safety; making Huntersville a safe and pleasant place to work and live.

The Huntersville Regional Chamber is the first Chamber in North Carolina to create a local job board to encourage our local companies to retain local talent and is free to register and search as a job applicant, www.LakeNormanWorks.com.

We have much to offer here in Huntersville and encourage you to learn more about our community. We have a diverse citizenry, living in our numerous unique and vibrant neighborhoods. This is Huntersville!

Located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Huntersville is one of three towns located just north of Charlotte, but still within Mecklenburg County. The other two towns are Cornelius and Davidson.

Set along the southern shores of both Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake, Huntersville is home to one of the fastest growing communities in the area. With a population over 57,000 and just 14 miles from the bustling city of Charlotte, Huntersville continues to develop and attract newcomers and businesses. The lure of the water, combined with a friendly and charming atmosphere, variety of housing options, numerous attractions and recreational options make this town the ideal place to live for active families, retirees and young professionals.

Two exits along Interstate 77 serve Huntersville.

Gilead Road (Exit 23) connects the expressway with the town. Sam Furr Road (or NC Hwy. 73 at Exit 25) provides access to a multitude of shopping, restaurants, medical, and office complexes.

Statesville Road (US Hwy. 21) and Old Statesville Road (NC Hwy. 115) are the two main north-south arterial roads through the town. These two roadways complement I-77 south to Charlotte and north to Mooresville and Statesville, which are both in adjacent Iredell County.

Easy access to this suburban community is also made possible by the close proximity to the major interstate systems of I-485 and I-85.

Living near the lakes means there is always something fun to do in the great outdoors from boating and fishing, bird watching and nature hiking, to dining and shopping along the water’s edge.

With over 500 miles of shoreline, residents and visitors enjoy easy access to the water with marinas, boat ramps, and public parks.

If you’re looking to get out of town, regional travel to the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Carolina beaches are easily accessible and can be reached within a couple of hours by car.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport, ranked among the top 10 busiest airports in the world, can typically be reached within 25 minutes. The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) offers convenient bus routes to keep you moving. All three routes meet at the Huntersville Gateway Park and Ride on Statesville Road.

How to use the I-77 Express Lanes Decide if you want to use the optional tolled express lanes, the free general purpose lanes or a combination of both.

Follow signs to enter and exit between the 11 segments.

Segments are each billed separately. There are no tollbooths; drivers either pay with a NC Quick Pass or by mail or email.

Cameras in each lane photograph license plates and send bills to the registered address.

Drivers pay 35% less if they use an NC Quick Pass.

NC Quick Passes come as stickers and transponders and can work in other states.

Stickers are free. Transponders cost between $7.40 - $16.49 depending on the type.

Located in Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln Counties in North Carolina, Lake Norman has endeared the community to both visitors and residents for decades. Created between 1959 and 1964, this picturesque lake was man-made to serve the nuclear power plant, and Mountain Island Lake, a smaller man-made lake that is used as Charlotte's city water source and located along the southwest border of Huntersville. Lake Norman was named after Norman Atwater Cocke, former president of Duke Energy. As the largest man-made body of fresh water in North Carolina, Lake Norman offers 520 miles of shoreline and a surface area of more than 50 square miles. The waters average depth is 33.5 feet, but at some points it drops down to 110 feet. Whether you prefer fishing, sailing, kayaking or watching the sun set, Lake Norman offers something for everyone.

Mountain Island Lake is a lake northwest of Charlotte created in 1924 to coincide with the building of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station. It is named after the mountain which appears as an island in the lake, and the surrounding area is identified by the lake’s name. Nearly 13 miles of shoreline are in the Huntersville area, accessed from the Latta Plantation Nature Preserve for fishing and boating, or observing from the numerous trails. The shape of the lake follows the meander of the Catawba River’s course, dammed near the Mount Holly Wastewater Plant.

Full pond elevation is approximately 647.5 feet. The lake has around 3,281 acres of surface area and 61 miles of shoreline. Mountain Island Lake is fed by the Catawba River, and is the smallest of the three man-made lakes that border Mecklenburg County (Lake Norman and Lake Wylie). The primary function of this lake is to provide drinking water for nearly a million residents of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County, as well as Mount Holly and Gastonia in Gaston County. There are two boating access areas on the lake and a tailrace fishing platform for bank fishing in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

GENERAL WILLIAM LEE DAVIDSON A Revolutionary War officer who was killed at the Battle of Cowan’s Ford.

He is buried nearby in the Historic Hopewell Presbyterian Church cemetery. He is the namesake of Davidson, NC and Davidson College.

RAMAH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The founders of this historic church belonged to the heterogeneous aggregate of pioneers who began to settle the Carolina backcountry in the mid-1700s. The current church sanctuary was built in 1881 with Greek Revival/Italiante style.

Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department’s Parks and Facilities Division is responsible for maintaining and operating twenty-four (24) parks and recreational facilities.

The Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department's programming division offers quality and diverse programs to the citizens of Huntersville at the lowest cost possible.

The department offered over 90 successful programs and special events to over 17,000 participants last year.

Programs offered range from art classes, special events, girl’s volleyball, adult softball, adventure summer camps, senior programs, trips, preschool programs, Start Smart, senior softball, pickleball, after school and Kids Out fun day programs.

Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department welcomes individuals of all abilities into its programs and activities and encourages the individuals to participate as independently as is possible in the activity of his/her choice.
