In these pages, you will learn more about what makes Matthews the perfect destination for visitors to explore, residents to live, and businesses to thrive. If you’re new to the Matthews area - or thinking of making Matthews your home – welcome! We know you will find that Matthews has so much to offer but still maintains the small-town feel that draws people here. If you have been in Matthews for a while, you may still be pleasantly surprised to see compiled in this single publication so many attractions, services, and photos depicting our great town. To say the past year has been interesting and challenging would be an understatement. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed so much about our world and our lifestyles. Here in Matthews, we are focused on continuing to find creative and positive ways to support each other during this crisis. Our love for this community, our businesses, and our fellow citizens must continue to guide us in our thoughts and actions as we all work together to help our community grow and thrive in positive ways. In Matthews, we are well placed to build a strong recovery. We have a good mix of large employers and ambitious small businesses that can adapt to these extraordinary circumstances. Agility and resilience will be vital in the recovery phase, as company owners/managers take steps to protect the wellbeing of their businesses and their employees. The Matthews Chamber of Commerce has worked extremely hard to help support our business community, provide resources, and distribute accurate information in a timely fashion. We have been able to do this because of the support and investment of our members. Every day we strive (pandemic or not) to build a stronger economy, problem solve, advocate, make connections and provide relevant educational opportunities. The Red Brick Partnership, along with the strong support and cooperation of the Town of Matthews, Economic Development Advisory Committee and Matthews Chamber of Commerce, are all working together to help elevate the historic downtown, the heart and soul of Matthews. The Red Brick Partnership exists to promote, enhance, diversify and support the development of downtown while preserving its rich history. RBP is focused on connecting and collaborating with businesses, residents, and non-profits. Over the coming months, we know that keeping it local will become more important than ever. MATTHEWS HERITAGE MUSEUM Step back in time and learn about the history of Matthews at this educational and interactive museum located in the Massey-Clark House, built in 1880. Learn about the importance of the railroad to this community. A country doctor’s office, the bank, and the local drug store can be explored. Pretend to be telephone operators with the switchboard. Open Thursday-Saturday from 10AM-4:30PM. On the first Saturday of every month you can visit the Matthews Heritage Museum for free. HISTORIC REID HOUSE The Reid House was built in 1890 by Edward Solomon Reid and is one of the few remaining Victorian Queen Anne houses in the area. Mr. Reid was a prominent businessman in Matthews. Currently it is owned and operated by the Matthews Historical Foundation. This charming and quaint house is available for rent for special occasions. MATTHEWS TRAIN DEPOT & VISITORS CENTER The Train Depot offers a free interactive experience for your family - the historic red Seaboard caboose is a favorite spot for wedding/prom/family photos and a fun place where children are welcome to play. The Depot was constructed in the late 1880s. Passenger service ended in 1958, but the Depot remained in operation until 1966. The Train Depot stood idle until 1999 when the Town of Matthews purchased it and relocated it to a prominent location on the Town Green of downtown Matthews. The building was restored and now serves as the home of the Matthews Visitors Center and the Matthews Chamber of Commerce. A variety of Town merchandise and memorabilia is available at the center. MATTHEWS PLAYHOUSE OF THE PERFORMING ARTS Matthews Playhouse is a community based non-profit theatre committed to enriching the lives of children, adults, and families by inviting them to participate in the world of performing arts and education. LEVINE SENIOR CENTER LIBRARY The 15,000 square-foot Matthews Branch Library is part of the Matthews Town Center, which also houses the Matthews Town Hall. Because the Matthews Town Center is located next to the old Train Depot, a train theme can be found throughout the library. The Levine Senior Center thrives on empowering seniors to celebrate living by developing new relationships through fellowship, enhancing their power of knowledge through stimulating activities and believing in the concepts of boundless aging. There is a large pier overlooking the pond for fishing and observing the surrounding pond life.

The park is dedicated in memory of Kay Plyler, who was a long time Town employee and the Assistant Town Manager at the time of her passing.

FOUNTAIN ROCK PARK 311 S. Trade Street | Matthews NC 28105 Located in the midst of the Four Mile Creek Greenway. This passive park is for relaxation or a break from your walk along the greenway. Here you can sit and meditate at the flowing fountain, have a picnic, or read a book.
FOUR MILE CREEK GREENWAY The greenway contains 2 miles of walking trail and multiple neighborhood connectors. Parking is available at Squirrel Lake Park and the Matthews Community Center. This is a joint project between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County.

WINDSOR PARK 10140 Northeast Parkway Matthews NC 28105 This 5.24-acre park has a playground, several slides, swings, and climbing structures. Check out the zipline while you're there! There is a picnic shelter with tables that offers seating for 30-40 people, and a large family-size grill.

Crews Recreation Center is a part of the Parks and Recreation Department for the Town of Matthews. Crews Recreation Center offers many programs year-round for all ages including athletic leagues, martial arts, summer camps, and seasonal events. Amenities include a full court gymnasium, six basketball goals, three volleyball standards, and a multi-purpose room. Call for open gym hours and more information.

Youth sports are definitely alive in Matthews thanks to MARA. Since 1956, this family oriented organization has been offering a wide variety of sports opportunities for children, including baseball, softball, football, basketball, and cheerleading. They provide a fun environment, quality facilities, expert instruction, and the highest level of coaching to ensure every child has an enjoyable learning experience with the opportunity to reach their full potential. This nonprofit, volunteer organization supports a variety of youth sports activities that is governed by a strong sense of individual and team sportsmanship.
The Sportsplex at Matthews is an athletic facility that consists of nine synthetic turf fields and two grass fields. All fields are multi-purpose and can accommodate a variety of sports; soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, rugby, etc. A 5,000-capacity stadium with a natural grass field is the premier athletic facility to host amateur, collegiate, and professional sporting events. The stadium includes a two-story field house with home, away, and referee locker rooms. The top floor of the field house is a 90-person conference room that is available to rent. There is ample parking with 1,400 parking spaces. The Sportsplex also has two playgrounds and roughly 2 miles of paved trails.

What unique personality traits do you bring to the table when serving as Mayor of Matthews? With age (I am 57) comes the ability to better distinguish what is truly important from items of less consequence. This is a particularly useful trait when serving on an elected body of seven people with very disparate life experiences and viewpoints, and I have often used this when considering how voraciously to argue a point during our many deliberations. There is an old military saying - “Is this the hill I want to die on?”. If not, then being more willing to accept compromise than standing in obstinate opposition is better for the group dynamic and produces better results for those we serve. Despite our differences, our Board works exceptionally well together. I also employ my sense of humor from time to time to turn down the temperature in our sometimes-spirited debates.
Who has been the most inspirational person in your life?
A. Outside of my incredibly supportive wife, children, family and friends, I recall a 4th grade teacher named Mr. Gilbert Cantlin who really impacted my life. Mr. Cantlin did not sugarcoat the realities of the winding down Vietnam War, pollution, crime, or other challenges of the time. He truthfully answered our questions on these difficult topics because he knew what we witnessed on the nightly news and that our concerns belied our age. But he also inspired us by showing us the awesome beauty of humanity. He took us backstage at a symphony, showed us great treasures in a museum, reviewed and explained the infrastructure, architecture, and history of our town, told us about other cultures, and bought out of his own pocket school supplies and even mechanical devices like an abacus and an old cash register for us to examine to determine how things worked. He told us the whole world awaited us and nothing was outside of our reach, and that continues to inspire me to this day.

As COVID-19 continues to impact the world, what do you hope to focus on in 2021 to make sure Matthews returns to some semblance of normal?
A. It seems we learn almost daily of new and ever-changing variants of COVID, so making sure our residents have the ability to get vaccinated as soon as possible is a top priority. I pledge to continue to advocate for a strong vaccine supply for Matthews by working with regional, state and federal agencies, and I urge everyone that is eligible to get vaccinated to do so as soon as possible. In addition, I have a great concern for our local businesses that have been ravaged by this pandemic. It is my hope that our citizens will join me in buying local goods and services whenever possible. I expect a “semblance of normal” by late summer, and a normal school year to begin in the fall. I am particularly looking forward to hearing the Butler Bulldog band play and watching our football team emerge victorious on a crisp fall evening.

What are the biggest issues facing Matthews, and how do you hope to address them? The elephant in the room, of course, is COVID. Beyond the pandemic, we have three pressing issues I will seek continued improvements on in the coming year:

Periodic surveys point to traffic as our residents’ number one concern. Our Board and town staff will continue to work with NCDOT to prioritize and complete projects here that move traffic more efficiently, and where appropriate around instead of through Matthews. We are also pressing for more and easier access to public transportation options, particularly along our higher density corridors. As a voting member of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization and Metropolitan Transit Commission, I work directly with the decision makers on these issues. I am proud to say we are making inroads to add workforce attainable housing in Matthews. Several new developments will set aside a portion of housing units at long-term lower sales points or lease rates to make them more affordable for our teachers, hospital and municipal employees, blue collar workers, etc. These units will be indistinguishable from others in the same developments but will make living in Matthews a possibility for those that currently can not find suitable, affordable housing here. Details will follow in the near future, but we are currently considering a few options that will increase the total park space in Matthews. As our population continues to grow and we rapidly approach a complete build-out of the remaining land here, I believe now is the time to acquire some portion of our undeveloped open spaces and set them aside for park and recreational uses. They aren’t making any more land, and in my estimation banking away land now for future park use is a wise use of our resources, particularly considering our strong desire to maintain our quality of life.

ANIMAL CONTROL Animal Care & Control Division 1201 Crews Road Matthews, NC 28105 704-847-5555 www.matthewsnc.gov The Matthews Police Department Animal Services Unit as well as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control, assists in assuring 24-hour emergency animal services. The Animal Services Unit encourages and assists owners with responsible pet ownership, resolves issues when they arise, and educates the community about peacefully co-existing with the wildlife that is abundant in our area. Animal Services Licensing: All dogs, cats, and ferrets four months of age or older inside the city limits of Matthews must be vaccinated for rabies as well as possess a current Town of Matthews Animal License. Licensing Fees: One-year license: $10 for spayed/neutered $30 for fertile animals Mecklenburg County has strict leash laws that apply to all animals except cats. Animals must be on a leash, contained within a fence or an operable and marked invisible fence. To report an animal at large, call 311.
