GREETINGS FROM TOWN HALL Although the municipal corporation of Mint Hill is less than 40 years old, our history as a community dates back more than two and a half centuries. Throughout this period there has always been one constant, our extraordinary sense of community. High school football games in the fall, summer Saturday mornings at the Historical Society’s Farmers Market and of course the last weekend in September when we all come together for a little ‘Mint Hill Madness’ are just a few of the events where the wonderful sense of pride in our community is on display. However, our community pride does not manifest itself simply during these special events but rather can be seen every day at our wonderful area schools and churches. As Mayor of Mint Hill, and on behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the citizens we are elected to represent, it is my utmost pleasure to welcome you into our Town and invite you to partake in all the Mint Hill Community has to offer. See you around Town,

The peaceful nature of the Catawba and Sugaree Indians added to the attraction, as these tribes were already settled and engaged in hunting and agriculture. In addition, the settlers liked this back country because it was far away from the prying eyes of the British Lord Proprietors, who were overseeing colonization. By 1750, the fearless Scotch Irish Presbyterians from Pennsylvania headed south in droves down the Indian Trading Path that later became known as The Great Wagon Road. Churches were established as the center of the community. Philadelphia Eli Hinson built Arlington Baptist in 1875 to honor his promise of a safe return from the civil war.

farmers produced an assortment of crops including corn, wheat, oats and peas. After the railroad arrived in nearby Charlotte, local farmers grew more cotton and other cash crops.

Many early communities adopted their names after the midnineteenth century railroad stops in their area. Clear Creek did not have a rail stop so the name may have come from an assay office established in the town during the local gold rush. Or perhaps the Mint Hill name was derived from another tradition that says the postmaster had an affinity for mint tea.

Clayton Kuck taught agriculture classes. He is shown here on a sickle mower, harvesting hay for dairy cows.

Q: How long have you been Town Clerk of Mint Hill? I began working for the Town in 1980 as receptionist, secretary to the Town Administrator and Planning Department/Board and assisting with tax collection. I became Clerk/Tax Collector of Mint Hill in 1985; and in 2000, Clerk/Assisting Manager.

Beth Q. Hamrick Town Clerk

Q: What do you like best about your job? Interaction with the public, various departments of the Town, and the elected officials. The work stays interesting and challenging because new situations and issues emerge almost daily, and state/local laws that effect the Town change on a regular basis. Q: What are your top 3 priorities for Mint Hill at this time? From the perspective of my duties as Town Clerk, it is important for the Town’s front-line staff to continue providing friendly and helpful service to the citizens who call or visit Town Hall. It’s equally important that we continue producing clear, accurate minutes of meetings to satisfy historical and reference purposes. As a citizen of the Town, I’d like to see more citizens become engaged in the Town through attendance at town meetings/local events, and have more citizens join one of the local civic/nonprofit organizations that do so much for the community. Q: What makes Mint Hill great? The people and the location. When Mint Hill’s population began growing rapidly many years ago, the residents who had grown up or lived in the community for a long time were quick to accept and welcome others to the Town. In turn, the “newcomers” welcomed the residents who came after them. The friendliness of the people has helped Mint Hill maintain its reputation for having a “small-town” feel. In addition to having the convenience of several businesses and eating establishments in the Town, Mint Hill’s proximity to Charlotte provides the citizens with some of the region’s best opportunities for employment, entertainment, shopping and continuing education. Another good thing about the location of Mint Hill is the fact that its residents are only a few hours’ driving distance from the beautiful mountains and beaches of North Carolina. Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the town of Mint Hill in the future? For the Town and other local organizations to continue addressing the needs of the community, foster the family atmosphere, and create such good memories for our youth that they will want to live in Mint Hill as adults. Q: Are there any personnel staff that you would like to mention that assist you in your job? We have been so fortunate to maintain an experienced, knowledgeable staff in the Clerk’s office with Doris Miller (25+ years of service) and Michelle Farrar (7+ years of service).

Jeremy Russell Q: How long have you been Fire Chief of Mint Hill? I am currently serving my 6th year as Chief of the Department and I have been with the Fire Department for 20 years.

Mint Hill VFD Fire Chief

Q: What do you like best about your job? The fulfillment I get by assisting the community when it is in need and the joy of knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. Q: What are your top 3 priorities for Mint Hill at this time? First is the assurance of coverage 24 / 7 / 365 of Fire and Medical Personnel to respond to and mitigate emergencies as they occur, second is working on very early stages of a second Fire Station to cover the outlying areas, and third is to be there to provide services to the entire community for any reason, any time! Q: What makes Mint Hill great? Mint Hill is made great by the people that live here. We all try to get to know each other and almost everyone you meet in the Town seems to have a genuine desire to help each other out, in one manner or another. Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the town of Mint Hill in the future? That the Town can continue to grow yet always maintain the “Mayberry” atmosphere as far as the way the town’s people act with each other. Q: Are there any personnel staff that you would like to mention that assist you in your job? I have roughly 96 Staff Members, these are Volunteer, Part Time and Full Time. My hats off to these men and women that have the desire and heart to help this community day in and day out. The ones that Volunteer are truly what this Department was designed for some 58 years ago, it was neighbor helping neighbor. Today we do have to have Paid Staff to augment the Volunteers, but without these men and women that GIVE their time, this Department would truly not be what it is today. Thanks to you all, you have the utmost respect for each other, and even more for the citizen that is lying wounded or ill on the street...You are all...my Heros!
