STEVEN’S CREEK NATURE CENTER & PRESERVE DEDICATED TO INSPIRING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO RESPECT, PROTECT, AND ENJOY THE WORLD OF NATURE Written by Penelope McClenny
From a hands-on living stream exhibit to a futuristic sandbox to rocking chairs placed in a peaceful setting with a view, the Stevens Creek Nature Center & Preserve offers activities for all ages of visitors. “We’re trying to do programming for 8 to 80,” said Chris Matthews, director of nature preserves and natural resources for Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation. “There’s a little bit for everyone.” The center and surrounding property, located at 15700 Thompson Road in Mint Hill, represents the first Parks & Recreation facility in the town but also the culmination of a project 10 years in the making. Throughout the facility’s interactive exhibits and surrounding trails, visitors can learn about the local environment and effects on the water system. “The theme of the building is ‘Life in the watershed hangs in the balance,” said Kristen Haas, Manager of the center. “Everything inside talks about what a watershed is, what watersheds we are in here in Mint Hill, how humans can affect the watershed, how we determine what water quality is and how we can protect it.” Once stepping inside, visitors are greeted with design and exhibits that
immediately draw them into the local environment. High, wooden ceilings and tall, surrounding windows keep the outside well in view while housing interactive displays to help guests understand the environment surrounding them. A live stream provides close contact with local fish and reptiles while a 15-foot, augmented reality sand table allows guests to control the weather with their hands or move mountains with their arms. “The project will change the color of sand whether you’re digging a hole or building a mountain,” Matthews said of the interactive sandbox. “It’s mesmerizing to sit there and play with it. It’s really, really cool. We’re super excited about it.” Visitors can also learn about the Carolina heelsplitter, a freshwater mussel that once inhabited the local stream but is now listed on the federal endangered species list. Center officials hope that education, along with mitigation efforts on the land within the preserve, will help the species return. “Basically, it was this long, wide, deep, straight stream,” Haas said of Stevens Creek. “They moved it and they made it very twisty-and-turny, which is better for water control, better for flood control.”
Please note: Because of COVID-19, the visitor center is currently not open to the public at the time of printing this publication. However, the outside walking/hiking nature trails are available as well as limited programming opportunities. For more information visit: www.mecknc.gov/ParkandRec/StewardshipServices/NatureCenters/Pages/Stevens-Creek.aspx

That layout is also better for the Carolina heelsplitter, which prefers “stable, silt-free stream bottoms,” according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “I think helping people understand why the heelsplitter is important and we do have a rare species that is important to the environment,” Matthews said of the displays highlighting the mollusk. About five miles of walking trails around the center provide additional opportunities for education as well as enjoying a peaceful walk, Haas said. Future plans include adding picnic shelters, Matthews said. With conference rooms available for rent and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor education programs, Stevens Creek is poised to become a go-to venue for everything from field trips to business presentations to reunions and weddings, all while educating the public about the protection and importance of their local watershed. “There’s a little bit for everyone. It really is a community asset. We want folks to say, ‘Hey, I went to have a party at Steven’s Creek,’ or have a reunion here,” Matthews said. “The whole goal is to have a place where people feel cool to hang out.”

thebirdfoodstore@gmail.com The heelsplitter is a species of freshwater mussel that is one of the rarest animals on earth and is on the federal “endangered” list. This mussel is extremely difficult to spot since lives in the substrate - the material at the bottom of creeks and rivers. Their size varies, from 1 centimeter for juvenile heelsplitters, up to four inches for larger members.

Built around 1890 for Dr. John McCamie DeArmon, the building was also used by Dr. Ayer Manny Whitley from 1908 until 1951. In addition to seeing patients in the office, both doctors made house calls, first on horseback and later by automobile.
circa 1900
Ira V. Ferguson, the father of seven, built this country store in the early 20th century and ran it for a decade before dying of pneumonia at age 38. He kept milk, butter, eggs, cheese, fruit, vegetables, tobacco and sodas in the cold storage cellar, cooled by a big block of ice. Sometimes he treated his children to NuGrape soda, passed from one to the other while sitting in a circle.

THE RAISING OF A BARN
Experience
LIFE IN THE DAYS OF YORE
We’re taking another ‘step into history’ and preserving the almost bygone era of farming in the Mint Hill area with the construction of a timber frame barn. The barn will not only be a place to teach and remind visitors of the important role farming had in the area, but also a place for families to gather and celebrate special occasions, and even a place for a good ol’ fashioned hoe down! We’re asking you to be a friend of the village and contribute to the barn! Your donation of any amount will make a difference in preserving the rich history of our community.
FARMERS MARKET Surface Hill Gold Mine Assay Office circa 1800
Miners brought their gold to the Surface Hill Gold Mine assay office to determine if they had “struck it rich”. After the discovery of gold in nearby Cabarrus County in 1799, mines sprang up like weeds all over the area, including Mint Hill, which was home to four major mines and others registered in Mecklenburg County.
Buggy House
Peek into the buggy house windows and see the transportation used by the country doctor. Dr. DeArmon treated “typhoid fever in the summer, malaria in the fall, pneumonia, bronchitis, influenza and whooping cough in the winter and babies from Christmas to Christmas”.
The Ashcraft School circa Late 1800’s
Students, ages 5-20, learned to read, recite, write, and cipher at this one-room school built near the Rocky Spring Cemetery on Brief Road in the late 1800’s. They walked to and from school, carried their lunches in buckets, and helped the teacher build fires and fetch water in the morning.
Wood Wright Shop Using hand tools and only human-powered machines this is where furniture, barrels, buckets, wagons and wheels were made.
Home-grown and home-made can be found at the market, local vendors, crafters, bakers and farmers sell their goods each Saturday from May through October.
SPECIAL EVENTS Throughout the year the village is the setting for several special events, including: • Discover Mint Hill • Salute to Veterans • Holiday Activities including Christmas Tea and our Village Christmas Shoppe • And Other Events

SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT A BARN IS RAISED IN SPITE OF PANDEMIC By Becky Griffin
Y
es, on a wet October day in 2019, the Mint Hill Historical Society broke ground on construction of the long anticipated period barn for the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village. The 1870-1880 timber frame barn would be coming from Morrow County, Ohio near the small town of Bellville and there was a lot of work to do before it arrived. Why Ohio? Marion Rogers and son Michael, of Rogers Lumber Company in Ohio had provided timbers for Tony and Julie Griffin in the construction of their home just outside of Mint Hill. Tony, a MHHS board member mentioned to Mr. Rogers that the historical society had been unsuccessful in finding a local barn in good condition. Mr. Rogers said he may have just

After a road trip to Ohio, the board of trustees voted to purchase an 1880 timber frame from Mr. Rogers, with the agreement that he also erect it on the property in the Carl J McEwen Historic Village. Scott Griffin, project manager for the barn, reminded us at the 2019 ground breaking ceremony of the significance of a barn in rural
communities like Mint Hill. It was not a luxury but a means of survival. Barns were necessary for storing hay and grain, for milking cows and for sheltering farm animals. After all, farming was the livelihood of most people in and around Mint Hill. Scott noted that this particular barn is an engineering marvel due to the open/no supporting beams. It is a load distribution/buttress type construction which was cutting edge of that day. The timbers are ash, which is what the farmer would have had available. When neighbors or even people you didn’t know or agree with built a barn, everyone helped, because a barn was a necessity, unlike a church or a community building.
In February 2020, the Ohio timber frame barn arrived at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village on a huge transport truck. Curtis Meggs and the Union Crane staff lifted each of the giant logs and strategically positioned them under the direction of the Rogers. When this barn was originally built, perhaps 50 or more neighbors helped raise the timbers. With modern equipment, Mr. Meggs only needed one crane, which greatly accelerated the progress of the barn construction! Wooden pegs were driven into the same holes that men drilled by hand more than 140 years ago. No modern day bolts or screws were used. Little did we know what would lie ahead for the remainder of the year. In March, 2020 Governor Roy Cooper declared North Carolina a State of Emergency due to COVID19. In 1918, the Spanish Influenza plagued the world and U.S. Public Health officials ordered all schools, dance halls, pool rooms, churches, lodges and public places where people assemble to be closed. 102 years later, similar restrictions were imposed for safety and to help reduce the spread of the virus, bringing barn construction to a halt.
non-profit organization that relies heavily on community support. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC in the barn are nearly complete at the beginning of 2021, thanks in part to “The Chicken Coop” donations. Volunteer and master carpenter, Barry Stevenson, crafted beautiful interior and exterior sliding barn doors, as well as concealed the HVAC equipment in the loft with vintage doors. Volunteers have sawed boards, trimmed windows, painted, and nailed up the exterior siding which will age naturally to a vintage grey color. Rough sawn interior boards donated by Scott and Tony Griffin are sorted, sized and ready to cover the interior walls of the stalls. The barn has been raised due to countless contributions from individuals and companies, but were it not for companies like Griffin Masonry, JO Flowe, BlueDot Redi Mix and Union Crane, we may still be fundraising to
clear the land. It has truly taken a village! This addition to the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village will change the face of Mint Hill as a new location for future celebratory gatherings, business meetings, trainings and a myriad of other uses. The sky is the limit for the uses of this magnificent old treasure. No other such facility is in downtown Mint Hill and available for the public to rent. The 2,400 square foot barn space will allow 125 guests for supper or 250 for audience attendance. The big news of 2021 is that there will be a magnificent venue in Mint Hill to serve the community in a new and exciting way, despite the setbacks of the 2020 pandemic! Please continue to follow our progress as COVID restrictions will conduct how we proceed. The Mint Hill Historical Society looks forward to making your upcoming events extra special with the opening of The Old Barn at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village. n
Not until early May, 2020 with a very limited number of volunteers, did work begin on construction of the lean-tos, the roof, the loft, and the loft stairs. MHHS Vice-President, Bob Rowland, who is hands-on every step of the way, led volunteers who stained every ceiling board before the huge insulating SIP panels could be installed. Again, this was a job which couldn’t have been done without Mr. Meggs and Union Crane! Also in May, the Farmers Market slowly opened with masking and social distancing. During that time a new found source of revenue emerged as quarantined families cleaned their closets, attics and storage units, and donated their treasures to be sold as income at the historical society. With schools closed, no tours were taking place and the Ashcraft Schoolhouse was repurposed. “The Chicken Coop” was born! Selling these donated items provided much needed income for our

Pet License All dogs, cats and ferrets four months and older residing in Mint Hill must be licensed annually. Proof of a current rabies vaccination from a veterinarian is required to purchase a license.
License fees vary depending on whether the pet is spayed or neutered. Fees for fertile animals are $30.00 and those for sterile animals are $10.00 for a 1-year license and $25.00 for a 3-year license. License fee exemptions may apply in certain situations: • Senior citizens 62 years of age and older may receive a free license for their pets, provided the animals have been sterilized. • If the animal has medical problems that make it unable to withstand the sterilization procedure, a license may be purchased for $10.00 with a statement from a veterinarian. • Any disabled owner of a dog which is used for seeing, hearing or assistance purposes may receive a free license if the animal has been spayed or neutered. • Owners of show animals may receive licenses for $10.00 provided they show proof of participation in at least three nationally recognized shows within the past twelve months. Animal licenses may be purchased by mail or online from PetData. Customer service representatives may be contacted by phone for questions and concerns. For general information and to register your pet online go to www.petdata.com or call 1-877-835-8523 Rabies Vaccinations North Carolina State Law requires every dog and cat four months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. This law also applies to ferrets within the city limits of Charlotte. This vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. In North Carolina, the animal's first rabies shot is good for one year and subsequent vaccinations are valid for three years.
• ALL dog owners that take their dogs for walks in their neighborhoods and/or in public parks (not designated as a dog park) are required to keep their dogs on leash and under physical restraint at ALL TIMES. To report an animal at large, call 311. Driving With Animals As of 12/1/17, any driver that is operating a moving vehicle is not allowed to have an animal on their lap. Not only is this dangerous for the animal but also the driver should a wreck occur. Violation of this law will be a $100 fine and court costs.
If you have recently moved to North Carolina and the rabies vaccination was given at a vet outside of NC then it is still a valid shot (regardless of it being a 1 year or 3 year shot). The fine for failing to display a rabies tag is $50.00 and a $50.00 fine may be levied if your animal does not have a valid rabies vaccination. Leash Law Mecklenburg County has strict leash laws that apply to all animals except cats. • Animals must be on a leash, contained within a fence or an operable and marked invisible fence. • An animal may be loose in its own yard if there is an adult (18 years or older) immediately next to the animal and the animal responds to direct verbal commands of the person.
