MONTCROSS AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The cities and towns of the Montcross area along Gaston County’s eastern border offer residents the best of small-town living, with easy access to the attractions of the big city next door. Our public schools are outstanding, and we also have excellent private school options. We have Gaston College, a two-year community college, and the four-year Belmont Abbey College. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is less than a 10-minute drive from Belmont and Mount Holly. In just 20 minutes, eastern Gaston visitors and residents can be in uptown Charlotte for a sporting event, for a play or concert, or just to have a dinner. When the big city isn’t calling, visitors and residents of the Montcross area communities have lots to enjoy in their own
backyard. Unique independently owned restaurants and specialty shops line Main Street in every town, and parks, greenways and other outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant. If you’re drawn to water, few communities offer more water access than those of the Montcross area. The Catawba River marks the eastern border of Gaston County flowing through Mount Holly and Belmont, allowing for beautiful riverfront parks, marinas and waterfront communities. On any given day, you can see kayaks and canoes on the water along with ski boats and fishing boats and often the sleek 65-foot-long shells of the Belmont Rowing Club, each with eight scullers and a coxswain calling out the cadence.
West of Belmont and Mount Holly, flowing through Lowell, McAdenville and Cramerton is the South Fork River, smaller than the Catawba, but ideal for canoes and kayaks and fishing. The two rivers combine in southern Belmont to form Lake Wylie, which totals 13,400 acres and 325 miles of shoreline. The spectacular 380-acre Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is located along the South Fork River in Belmont, featuring a five-story orchid conservatory, a children’s garden, and much more. If you’re considering our area as your next home we hope this publication will be a valuable tool in helping you become acquainted with Gaston County and its communities. When you arrive, please let us know you’re here. We invite you to attend our events and let the Montcross Area Chamber help you connect quickly to sources for services and to new friends. Our website has lots of valuable information. You can sign up on the site to receive our emails, which will keep you updated on what’s happening in the business community. eeting the needs of an active community with a strong business sector can keep local municipal officials on their feet, but Belmont city leaders are up for the challenge. With plans for a state-of-the-art recreation facility, upgrades to several local parks and a strong focus on supporting local restaurants and retail businesses, City Manager Adrian Miller said the city has a full slate of projects to keep this east Gaston city providing plenty of opportunities for its residents and continuing to be an exciting destination for visitors. “We have a vibrant downtown and a really strong business sector in downtown Belmont, and we’re hoping to get that back sooner rather than later,” Miller said as local businesses are working to reopen following COVID-19 closures.

Balancing public health while supporting business owners calls for creative measures. As the state regulations required restaurants and shops to open with limited capacity or increased space, Belmont officials chose to close Main Street to vehicle traffic on Friday and Saturday evenings in order to provide more outdoor areas for diners and shoppers. “This offers people a unique dining experience, to eat dinner in the middle of Main Street, which you don’t normally get to do,” Miller said. Customers provided positive feedback following the first two evenings, Miller said, with several shop owners bringing their merchandise onto the sidewalks and extending their hours. them to return to the “next normal” will be the city’s top priority in the upcoming year, Miller said, but several other projects set into motion before the pandemic will also bring exciting developments to the city. One of these include a community recreation facility, with design plans underway for a 40,000-square-foot, state-of-theart facility on East Catawba Street across from Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park. The center will include basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor walking track, and classrooms as well as opportunities for displaying public art. With the current public health climate in mind, plans will focus on making public health and safety a top priority, Miller said. “We’re going to design this facility to make sure that it’s www.montcrossareachamber.com

meeting the needs of our growing community but also allows the public the opportunity to use it safely,” he said. “Certainly there are best practices out there that we can incorporate into our design.” The facility is scheduled to be complete in spring 2022. For outdoor activities, the city is partnering with a regional mountain biking club to upgrade trails and facilities at Rocky Branch Park. The park’s terrain coupled with its proximity to downtown make it a top destination. “It’s a 40-acre park that’s very hilly and has a beautiful spring that runs through it. When you go into the park, you feel like you’re in the mountains,” Miller said. “It’s a great park that brings you outside and gets you closer to nature but has you less than a

mile away from a bicycle shop or a restaurant.” “Our city council has been very supportive of our park and recreation system,” Miller said. “These are the type of investments they want to make because they know it promotes an active lifestyle, economic development and quality of life.” The city also invested in major improvements to Stowe Park in the downtown area this year, and by yearend most of the city’s business and administrative offices will be consolidated to a newly renovated location on Catawba Street. Previously used as Belmont’s public works headquarters, the spacious building has been transformed into a state-of-the-art and efficient complex that will be known as the “City Works” building. Amenities include an elevator with a three story glass wall, automatic energy efficient LED lights, and ample parking. In the coming year, construction of a new 155,000+ sq. ft. Belmont Middle school will be completed, a new $12 million Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel is scheduled to open near Chick-fil-A, the redevelopment of the Chronicle Mill into apartments and retail space is expected to begin, and two major industrial and office building are slated for construction in North Belmont. With a focus on its natural assets and business community as well as an eye toward future needs and growth, Belmont is a great destination for visitors and future residents alike. a

ith access to some of the most scenic riverfront in the area and a bevy of local artistic talent, the city of Mount Holly has a strong set of natural assets to help fuel its growth. Expanded walking trails and an art initiative that invites residents to submit plans for painting on street crosswalks are some of the upcoming projects local leaders have planned as this Gaston County city looks to the future. “Several other cities throughout the country have put particular processes in place where you can paint sidewalks, you can paint crosswalks,” said Assistant City Manager Miles Braswell, explaining the newly organized Crosswalk Creations project. Residents interested in participating can submit an application detailing their design, which will then be reviewed. “I think it’s a great way to spotlight our local artists,” Braswell said. “It does create a great sense of place.”
The City of Mount Holly is emerging as a place where art and creative places are becoming distinctive components of the community’s character.
This project and several others are a result of resident surveys soliciting input on Mount Holly’s future growth. Overall, responses revealed that residents are satisfied with local parks and recreation opportunities in the area, especially with Tuckaseege Park. “Our parks are full, they're busy, and that's what we want,” Braswell said, listing the many different areas at Tuckaseege. “A lot of people get out to that park. It's got a gym, a softball field, a couple of little league fields, a dog park, a skate park. Tuckaseege Park offers a lot for everyone. If you Lantern Parade like dogs, you can go to the dog park. If you like skating, you can go to the skate park. There are a lot of opportunities to get outside and enjoy.” Recently, the city opened Riverfront Greenway, a 1.2mile, 10-foot-wide paved path that hugs the Catawba River and connects the municipal complex to Tuckaseege Park. “It's a vital piece of our trail system that is connected at this point,” Braswell said.” Projects beyond downtown are also helping the city absorb increasing demand as growth from Charlotte spills into Gaston Riverfront Greenway Along The Catawba River County. www.montcrossareachamber.com

word for it,’ this is just what people want.” Soliciting local feedback and planning frequent events help make this Gaston County city a great place to live, Braswell said. “We offer a lot of events for our citizens where they can get out and connect with one another and get that community feel,” he said. a

A 91-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, located just off Highway 273 at I-85, exit 27, opened this spring, and several housing developments are in the planning stages, according to Economic Development Coordinator Greg Beal. “The land prices and the housing prices have gotten so crazy in Charlotte, so we're starting to see some interest in Mount Holly because where else are you going to go that's 20 minutes from uptown?” he said. The surveys, submitted by nearly 550 residents, have a been great tool in helping the city guide its growth, Beal said. “What we're hearing is that folks in Mount Holly want balanced growth. The city's biggest goal is to attract another grocer to town. We're working with a couple of grocers now,” he said. “The retail seems to be the most wanted, and that's just based on surveys. hile Cramerton’s long lengths of riverside walking trails and ample playground equipment have attracted residents and visitors for several years, even more awaits to be revealed under this Gaston County town’s surface. “We’re grading to uncover a natural spring in the park that has gone underground,” Parks and Recreation Manager Eric Smallwood said of renovations at the town’s Central Park. “We’re also putting in over a mileand-half of enhanced natural surface walking trails and mountain bike trails. The park has a really nice topography, so there are several different places where you can sit in the park and overlook the whole thing. It’s really nice to sit there and enjoy the water.”

The Central Park project is just one of the latest ways this east Gaston County town is working to keep its active residents and frequent visitors healthy and entertained. “We just got finished with a renovation project in our senior center and community center,” Town Manager David Pugh said. “In the process of doing that, we actually built a history musem in our senior center.” The Cramerton Historical Society will operate the museum and provide insight into the town’s rich past, which includes the creation of the durable “Cramerton khaki” military cloth used by the U.S. armed forces in World War II. To help provide more health care services in the area, Cramerton welcomed CaroMont Family Medicine-Cramerton in the spring of 2020. This 15,000+

These enticing outdoors amenities plus the increase in local services continue to keep Cramerton on the radar for new residents, Pugh said. “We have several neighborhoods that are going on with a large jump this year and the year before in permits,” Pugh said. “Developers are knocking.” Some of these communities cater to active adults, which can be a great fit for a community that offers numerous opportunities for its residents to get involved. “Cramerton is a great community for involvement period,” he said. “We try to have a diverse portfolio of all our projects, that includes everything from youth sports to art.” A new section of walking trails, the River Link Greenway, just opened, with future plans to expand the path all the way into downtown McAdenville, Smallwood said. not only provide more choices for enjoying the outdoors, but also for volunteering and building community bonds. More than 100 volunteers participated in last year’s cleanup project along the South Fork River, he said, and then helped clean sand and silt from the paths following a February flood. “I feel like people are always chomping at the bit to help us here in Cramerton,” he said, adding that the active volunteer corps is a huge asset to the town’s maintenance department. “If people put their blood, sweat and tears into something, they’re definitely going to appreciate it more and take care of it.” With quiet pathways and active sports programs, benches for watching a stream quietly slip through the rocks or a boisterous Independence Day celebration, this Gaston County towns offers plenty for every resident or guest, Pugh said. “Sometimes the town doesn’t sleep,” he said on a recent sunny afternoon, “so that means I don’t sleep either.” a

arbeque has been the heart of Gerald Duncan’s business for more than 30 years, and now he’s proud to bring that business back to the heart of his hometown. “This is home to me,” said Duncan as he put the finishing touches on the new location for Hillbilly’s BBQ & Steaks in downtown Lowell. “I grew up here in business. It’s a small town, everybody kind of knows everyone. We’ve got some loyal customers and they’ve been faithful throughout the years.” “I like feeding the customers. I love cooking the BBQ, the skill of cooking the BBQ,” Duncan said. “It’s never boring.” The restaurant relocation is just one of several exciting new developments for this east Gaston County town. Local officials are applying for a federal grant that will help pave the way for a road and interstate overpass to allow easier access to nearby commercial development, said Scott Attaway, who serves as Lowell’s Development Services Administrator. Although that project had been scheduled before the Covid-19 pandemic, Attaway said the high demand for shipping and delivery services highlighted the need for improved transportation corridors. “You really do realize the need for moving around your

goods,” Attaway said. The town also continues to expand its foot traffic infrastructure as well, adding a new trail from Birch Street to Poston Park. A recently updated bicycle and pedestrian plan will help keep those popular public facilities in the forefront as new developments arrive in Lowell, Attaway said. “That’s a good guidebook to keep that sort of infrastructure in the mindset while we are building and developing,” he said. “You’ve got to have all those sorts of amenities.” As the town works to streamline future development, citizen input is always an important component of the process, Attaway said. Plans to update the Unified Development Ordinance will include a steering committee and public meetings with the goal of making the document more user-friendly to future developers. Land-use and commercial changes throughout the years necessitate a more updated plan. A recent application for land-use downtown to accommodate a doggie day-care, for instance, presented a few hurdles for planning administrators as that type of business may not have been on the radar when the original ordinance was developed, he said. “When a developer comes to Lowell, they want to be able to get the land use (ordinance) and go through it in about 10 minutes,” Attaway said. “We’re trying to make it simpler. We’re trying to make it better. We’re trying to update definitions and terms to 2020 and beyond.”

This business-friendly environment is one of several reasons local café owner Alisa Frye is happy that a couple of twists of fate lead her to downtown Lowell.
Fryeday Coffee Roasters
“Most of the businesses in downtown Lowell are women-owned, which I think is so awesome,” said Frye, who opened Fryeday Coffee Roasters in late 2019 after considering several other locations. “Everyone is just really supportive of each other.” From a new café owners to a seasoned pit master, from residents and visitors searching for a quick cup of coffee or a nice long walk, or a hot plate of BBQ, Lowell offers something for everyone. a

he people can make the place, and for local business owner Tony Coppola, the people of McAdenville make the place feel like his small hometown on the Italian coast. “It’s just an amazing community. You’re a part of the family,” said Coppola, who is known as “Chef Tony” throughout the village. “It is a unique village, and I thought original Italian food would fit well with a town like that.” That sense of community led Coppola to McAdenville in late 2019, when he opened Terra Mia restaurant. The popularity of Coppola’s “Nonna-style” pizza, which translates to “grandma” in Italian, is a great example of the area’s willingness to adapt to exciting new changes. “People were very curious about this product when we opened, they were a little bit concerned,” Coppola said, “and then it became one of the most popular items.” Mayor Pro Tem Jay McCosh counts himself among the many fans of the pie, and said Terra Mia is one of several great businesses and local amenities that are helping to shape McAdenville’s future. “We only have one-and-a-half square miles, and we want those one-and-a-half square miles to be a diamond for Gaston County,” he said, adding that he and other local leaders are working to promote McAdenville beyond its nationally26

renowned Christmas light celebration. “We want to buff out those rough spots and not just for the people of McAdenville, but to give more reasons to honor it the other times of year as well.” One of the most successful recent additions includes the opening of a two-mile section of the Greenway Project. “The real gem is the paved pathway. They did it so well. It's just a beautiful, beautiful trek,” McCosh said of the 10foot-wide path. “It's great for biking, it's great for walking and running. Literally, the first time we walked through it, it felt like no humans had been back there. It's just gorgeous walking through some of this really neat terrain, this wooded area.” In the downtown area, renovations continue on several structures previously used by the textile manufacturing company Pharr, which maintains strong ties to the community. Changes are in place to make these buildings more alluring for future commercial use, McCosh said, including an attractive area near the dam in downtown. “They've left a skeleton of a building there to build upon later on to give ideas for people coming,” he said. “You've
got the area along the dam, it's just beautiful. Hopefully, that will be an area in the future for us that will really grow.” Each of these plans help support a common goal: make McAdenville a pedestrian-friendly destination for both its residents and visitors. Future greenway expansions will also link downtown to nearby Cramerton, McCosh said. “You could get on your bike and you go down to Cramerton from McAdenville along the river,” he said. “Once we get this downtown area, it's going to be a beautiful way to go and not be in a car. It's going to make McAdenville such a beautiful place to live and to work.” These plans paint a bright future for this quaint but growing Gaston County village, and many, including Chef Tony, are excited to witness those changes first-hand. “Definitely I enjoy the community, I enjoy all the customers. The surrounding communities too, they’re wonderful. It’s just an amazing community,” said Coppola, who looks forward to welcoming residents and visitors into the distant future. “I want to have a long-term relationship, that’s my goal.” a
With a tradition that began in 1956 when the local Men’s Club decided to decorate a number of trees with Christmas lights, McAdenville is now known as “Christmas Town USA”. The glow of all the lights makes McAdenville an annual destination and it has grown to a month-long celebration with light displays involving residents, businesses, and churches. It has grown to be one of the nation's largest, attracting a half-million visitors who stroll or slowly drive the 1.3 mile loop through town. Each year, thousands of red, white and green lights decorate nearly 400 trees throughout town with special displays that surround the lake at the town’s center. ristie and Kerry Stewart searched up and down the East Coast for a seaside community that would be a perfect fit for their lives and business dreams, and then they moved inland and found Stanley. “We moved here sight unseen to Stanley. We loved Stanley.” said Kristie Stewart, who along with her husband, Kerry, is working to renovate a downtown building to house a vintage clothing and screen-printing business clustered with a shaved ice and baked goods café and a wood fire pizza restaurant. "Community and food are center stage here, and that kind of conveys over to us," she said. The couple's downtown businesses are several of the latest exciting developments bolstering Mayor Steven Denton's plans for this growing Gaston County municipality. Combined with improved store fronts, antique street lights, expanded parking and plans to make Stanley more accessible to foot traffic, new businesses are helping to add more vitality to the downtown area. "That was my main goal when I first got elected in 2017, and I'm finally seeing that come to fruition now," said Denton, who was reelected in 2019 and will now serve four-year terms.
New Residential Development
"We're starting to see the growth I wanted downtown, seeing it beautify," he said. "It's exciting. I'm anxious to see what I can accomplish over the next few years." Beyond downtown, plans for new residential development are yet another signal of Stanley's growth. Construction for a community of 230 single family homes is well underway with plans for an additional project including 300 homes. The municipality also recently completed a town hall expansion project to help serve its growing population. That space includes additional office and conference room space and larger city council chambers with updated technology. Plans are also in the works for updated welcome signs, said Town Manager Heath Jenkins, as well as several other initiatives to show potential business owners that Stanley is a great place to set-up shop.
Stanley Middle School
“We’ve tried to make some improvements and show the investors that we're willing to invest in the downtown area,” Jenkins said, adding that seeing local residents such as the Stewarts become business owners is especially rewarding. The Stewarts’ main goal is to create a location where residents and visitors can relax and visit, with plans to use a field beside the building for corn hole and a children’s play area. As plans develop, they have enjoyed the opportunity to meet several lifelong residents who stop to check on the progress. According to Denton, that strong sense of community connection is another positive feature of this Gaston County town. “Because we're a fairly small community we have a good network of communication between our seniors, our churches, and our nonprofits,” he said. For the Stewarts, those visits help them feel even more connected to a new community they are proud to call home. “We love it when the older generation comes and starts telling us stories,” Kristie Stewart said. “We're hoping that the community understands how much this means to us.” a
