Karen Johnson
The Waxhaw Military of Honor located in downtown Waxhaw
Written by Rebecca T. Dickinson Karen Johnson pops up everywhere on the Waxhaw map. Waxhaw Business Association member, Johnson, works to promote local businesses through new programs. She has also worked with the 4-H Club to build and expand the Waxhaw Military Wall of Honor. Building and history projects connected to the wall continue through fundraisers, interviews and plans for a book. The importance of the wall is also connected to Waxhaw’s present and future. According to Johnson, that is the reason it is called an honor wall; not a memorial wall. Johnson volunteers her time with the WBA, 4-H and other organizations and projects behind the scenes. “I’m the behind the scenes person,” Johnson said. “My family is very supportive of the projects I’ve done.” According to Johnson, she was taught by her parents to become involved in the community. When she moved to Waxhaw 19 years ago, she taught her children they could use their skills and talents to help others. WBA President, Loyd Pennington, described Johnson as “the most silent, giving person.” Johnson became involved in the WBA as it expanded from a business chamber to a community-minded association. The WBA is supporting a pilot program in 2013. Johnson and a team will work to establish WE, Waxhaw Entrepreneurs. The goal of WE is to develop small business in Waxhaw, and work with the WBA as a support group. Johnson described the new organization as a “business incubator.” The phrase refers to a program 6

launched to promote successful business development through available support. Such support occurs with the establishment of collaboration of potential and current business owners and resources. Johnson hopes meetings will begin in January or February. She envisions Waxhaw as a place that provides stores, shops and restaurants that keep residents from having to drive to Charlotte for everything. It will also give Charlotte residents many reasons to visit Waxhaw. In The New York Times article “How to Choose an Incubator,” journalist Darren Dahl reports business incubators “cater to a variety of businesses.” Most operate as non-profits, and programs, such as WE, are increasing. WE will begin as a six month organization under the wing of the WBA. If successful, it will become its own non-profit. Johnson, antique business owner of Home Spun, said she has witnessed friends who have lost jobs due to the economy. “There’s always something you can do,” Johnson said. “Everybody has a little bit of talent. Everybody has a little bit of promise. They just have to develop it...if you come together as a group, you can possibly take that and turn an idea into a business.” Her desire was to help people who needed jobs and Johnson, who earned an education degree, learned she would become a business incubator. Many business coaches are WBA members. Some have offered to host a seminar. They would answer questions such as: Where do I get a loan? Potential business owners may have an idea. According to Johnson, they might not know where to go and cannot afford a business coach. “College kids cannot get a job in this economy until they can get experience,” Johnson said. “They can come in and help us with areas of their expertise…They might be working at Burger King–something not related to their degree–but by being a part of WE they gain experience.” Members would consist of college graduates, people who have lost their jobs, and other backgrounds. Johnson said interested members come from marketing, business and banking. Johnson would like to see retail grow in Waxhaw. “When you want to draw more people from Charlotte, you need more than one or two shops,” Johnson said, adding people are interested in discovering locations for day trips. Johnson has worked on other Waxhaw start-up projects before and they succeeded. The Waxhaw Military Wall of Honor was dedicated at 100 Block of North Main Street in November 2004. Johnson worked with 4-H Club and the town of Waxhaw to raise money for the wall. Donations came from town residents and fundraisers such as a bake sale. The site is still expanding. Johnson works with organizations to raise funds for the military and the wall. The Hometown Heroes Car Show began three years ago. The money is now donated to U.S. war veterans. For seven years, Waxhaw has hosted an antique show to raise money for renovations. “We’ve had a good response,” Johnson said. “The Presbyterian Hospital has donated parking a area for Hometown Heroes.” The Waxhaw Military Wall of Honor currently features 825 brick tiles. According to the website waxhawmilitarywall.webs.com,
Lets Her Work Take The Spotlight “The American Legion Auxiliary, Waxhaw Post 208, is in the process of obtaining funds to reposition and add on more tiles.” “The military honor wall is a wall honoring the military men and women who have served, are serving, and who will be serving,” Johnson said. “That wall has every American conflict on American and foreign soil. There is even someone from the Civil War on the wall. We didn’t want to turn away anyone who served in a war.” When 15 orders are received for new tiles, orders are mailed. According to Johnson, most orders are sent every two months. The wall was expanded to make room for an additional 1,000 names. Military men and women serving or who have served do not need to be from Waxhaw. Johnson said many people who move to Waxhaw want a spot to honor a family member or friend who has served in an American conflict. The wall offers them that opportunity. Now the auxiliary and Johnson are planning for a patio to give the wall a “finished look.” Two more projects will connect veterans’ voices to the military wall. Heroes’ Voices is on the first and third Thursday night of every month at Museum of the Waxhaws. Johnson, who takes care of the orders for the wall, has received books and stories from veterans who want to share
their stories. Along with the WBA, Jim Black - “Land of the Waxhaws” - is recording veterans’ stories for “Heroes’ Voices.” How the recordings will be shared is still in the planning stages. In connection to “Heroes’ Voices,” stories will be compiled in a book. “Keeping the Wall Alive” is the working title of the book. It will also publish veterans’ photographs of their time during the service. At this time, there is not a planned date for publication. “We’ve gotten a big response of people wanting share their stories,” Johnson said. Much of her inspiration to assist veterans comes from her father, brother and former high school students. Not long after graduation, some of her students were sent to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Her father served in World War II, and Johnson’s brother fought in Vietnam. A friend of Johnson’s was killed in Vietnam. “It has been a part of who I am and who my family is,” Johnson said. “More importantly, we need to honor what veterans did. During Vietnam, veterans were treated very poorly. For the most part we send soldiers overseas and forget they’re over there. We need to honor them while their living. That is why we have an honor wall; not a memorial wall.”

Waxhaw takes its name from the Waxhaws, both the name for the area and the name for the Indian tribe that once inhabited it. The community dates back to the 1700’s, but it wasn't well known until 1888 when railroad tracks from Atlanta were laid. Tracks still run through the center of town today along the green, grassy strip dividing two rows of quaint specialty shops and restaurants. This area was home to the Waxhaw Indians long before the European settlers came to the area. They were connected with the neighboring Sugeree, and both were apparently related to the Catawba, and therefore were Siouan.
Full of History Waxhaw’s rich heritage, has been preserved in local museums, parks and historical sites.
The Waxhaw Indians were allied with the Catawbas in their wars with the Cherokee and were almost wiped out in 1715 by the Yamasee War and by diseases brought by the early settlers to the area. Soon afterwards German, English, Scottish, Welsh and other European settlers arrived in the area to establish a settlement. The land was fertile and trade was made easy by the proximity of the Catawba River and the main trading path which ran from Petersburg, Virginia to Augusta, Georgia. The Town of Waxhaw was chartered in 1889, making it the third oldest town in Union County. The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States. President Andrew Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart - but because the State Line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. He lived in North Carolina until the age of 21 when he moved west to Tennessee. Waxhaw is home to two area attractions where you can learn more about Andrew Jackson. One is the Museum of the Waxhaws, which is dedicated to the history of the Waxhaws region and the memory of our nation’s 7th President. The other is the Andrew Jackson State Park, which is located in nearby Lancaster, SC. The parks museum features exhibits about Andrew Jackson’s boyhood in the Waxhaw region.

LaPointe and Giovanniello said riders of any level are welcome at McNeely Farms. “We would start out with a really sensible, safe horse,” Giovanniello said. “That would be our 22-year-old gelding. He is on the smaller side.” Riders learn the basics and build confidence. “You start with the walk, the trot and then the canter,” Giovanniello said. As McNeely Farms grows, it remains a family-centered business. Giovanniello said it is just a “larger” family business. It is also active in the Waxhaw Business Association. Giovanniello is a former president of the WBA, and McNeely Farms has hosted events at the barn. “The farm has been involved from the beginning,” Giovanniello said.
McNeely Farms has hosted two free concerts. The center aisle in the barn was closed off, and bales of hay were put in place. During the second concert, 125 people attended. The farm also offered pony rides at the concerts. Anytime the WBA hosts an event, the farm has given away prizes such as free riding lessons. “We always want to participate,” Giovanniello said. Waxhaw presents multiple opportunities for Giovanniello and the LaPointes. Originally, they wanted to escape the New England climate. In Waxhaw, anyone can ride at anytime of the year. McNeely Farms also gives people living in Charlotte a reason to travel to Waxhaw. It is not far, and the farm makes any rider feel as if they are away from a “congested area,” Giovanniello said. “People in the Waxhaw area are very cordial,” Giovanniello said. “There are a lot of nice things about Waxhaw…It is just a friendly, small town.” In the future, the farm wants to have more local students who will go to local horse shows. McNeely Farms currently participates in Class A horse shows, national and regional horse competitions. More weekly and local horse shows would help McNeely Farms form a more vocal business. “We really want to build up the lesson program and separate the training from the lesson,” Giovanniello said. “We would have a trainer at the farm that solely gives lessons and a trainer at the barn that trains the horses and takes them to the other horse shows. The goal is to grow it into something a little bit bigger and a local business.” ¶ Waxhaw • North Carolina

The Union County Chapter of the Autism Society of North Carolina, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is the best source in Union County for connecting people who live with autism (and those who care about them) with resources, support, advocacy, and information tailored to their unique needs.
The WBA sponsored a cornhole tournament for Waxhaw’s annual July 4th celebration. Money raised in the 2011 event went to the Union County chapter. Partnership with WBA and Union County Schools remains an active goal for ASNC–Union County. “We became aware of the Waxhaw Business Association and joined them as a non-profit member,” Belk said. She added members try to attend meetings as often as they can, speak about autism, and the board has also donated books to schools in the county. “We try to make ourselves aware of what is going on in the community, and let other people in the community know about us,” Belk said. “The Waxhaw Business Association is a very receptive organization for us.” The WBA helps ASNC-Union County. Whenever its members learn of a parent or someone in the community affected by autism, they put him or her in contact with the chapter. “I think it is important to build partnerships with the small business associations,” Belk said. “They’re a very vibrant and important part of the community. It’s important you partner with each other.” ¶

Overhead Bridge One of the most iconic images for the town is the overhead bridge, located in the heart of downtown. It was built in 1888 when the railroad company built a rail line to Atlanta. The narrow bridge served automobile traffic on the then main road through town over the railroad line until approximately 1940, when it was designated for pedestrian use only. In 2007, the town partnered with CSX to renovate and do a complete reconstruction of the bridge. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge as a train passes under their feet.
Water Tower If you’ve ever been to downtown Waxhaw you’ve probably saw this silver tower. This 100,000-gallon steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to Main Street (Hwy. 75) and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. On December 2, 1940, the Town Commissioners adopted a resolution to approve the building of the water tank by Taylor Water Works of Macon, GA , for $7,337. Recently The Town of Waxhaw signed a contract to begin restoration of the old water tank which will be completed in 2013.

Historic District Get your walking shoes out. The Waxhaw Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Waxhaw has some wonderful attractions and old buildings near the center of town which makes for a nice walking tour. The Waxhaw Historic Preservation Commission (WHPC) serves to protect, preserve and sustain the towns historic buildings, landmarks and unique character. It’s clear that Waxhaw residents are working to make sure that the town’s heritage will be preserved and treasured for years to come.

Waxhaw Reading Room Used Bookstore This large clay urn was originally used at the Rodman-Heath Mill. It was moved to the location of the current Dare Steele Memorial Garden in the mid-’80’s and was slightly damaged in the process and then moved to its current downtown location near the well around 2003. The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use until the 1920’s. The current structure commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot. The replica was constructed in 1989 to commemorate the Town of Waxhaw Centennial.
