The Waxhaws have been the homeland of many distinguished men throughout the years. The most noteworthy native of this region is Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States. President Andrew Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area in 1767. An ongoing dispute centers on whether he was born in North Carolina or just to the south in South Carolina. He was born in one of two cabins, less than 100 yards apart - but because the State Line ran between them, it’s unknown which state he was actually born in. He lived in North Carolina until the age of 21 when he moved west to Tennessee. Waxhaw is home to

two area attractions where you can learn more about Andrew Jackson. One is the Museum of the Waxhaws, which is dedicated to the history of the Waxhaws region and the memory of our nation’s 7th President. The other is the Andrew Jackson State Park, which is located in Lancaster, SC. The parks museum features exhibits about Andrew Jackson’s boyhood in the Waxhaw region. A popular feature of the park is the large bronze statue of a young Jackson atop a horse.

Q: How long have you been Mayor of Waxhaw?

Three years. I was elected in November, 2007, to serve a four-year term Q: What do you like best about your job?

Working for the people of Waxhaw! Q: What are your top 3 priorities for Waxhaw at this time?

My first priority is to continue our long-term planning efforts by updating our comprehensive plan and adding layers to it that fill in the details on things like needed infrastructure, desired greenspace and civic/public goods like libraries, community centers and government buildings. Another priority is transportation. Our most significant transportation challenge is to get some movement on Waxhaw Parkway. We have made progress in that the alignment study has been completed and the Parkway is now listed on the NCDOT’s 2035 TIP. Other transportation challenges that we need to study, debate and plan for are circulation patterns in the downtown area and a local transit system. Another conversation that I have been pushing since early in my tenure is Economic Development. While beginning this effort has been somewhat challenging thus far, it is crucial that we develop a strategy now to build a quality economic base that keeps pace with our growing residential population. What makes this effort even more important is that our neighboring municipalities and the unincorporated areas of western Union County are less interested in having significant commerce in their communities. When you consider that Waxhaw is located dead-center in western Union County, it becomes apparent that we are a natural nucleus around which that sort of activity can coalesce for the betterment of the entire region. Q: What makes Waxhaw great?

Our downtown historic core visually captures the essence of Waxhaw but, undoubtedly, it’s the people that make Waxhaw great! The people of Waxhaw, whether their family has been here for generations or whether they have recently chosen to join our community, have a desire to be engaged with their neighbors and their community and actively seek to become involved. Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the town of Waxhaw in the future?

I hope to see Waxhaw continue to gain confidence as we grow and to find the balance between growth and preservation, between moving forward and protecting our heritage, that will allow us to welcome new residents, businesses and organizations while not letting our small-town charm become lost or overshadowed. 10

Q: How long have you been Fire Chief for Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department?

I have been Chief of WVFD for 1 year. I have served as an Assistant Chief for the 4 years prior to that. Q: What do you like best about your job?

I enjoy working with our members on every aspect and service our department provides. As the demands of the community continue to increase, it is rewarding to see that the Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department can meet this demand through our committed members’ services. Q: What are your top 3 priorities for Waxhaw at this time?

1. Ensuring that new construction has the proper consideration as it relates to access for various Emergency Services i.e. Fire Department, Police, EMS. 2. Providing the Town of Waxhaw and it rural areas with the highest level of service. 3. Promoting Fire and Life Safety to the citizens through Community Service and outreach programs in the elementary schools. Q: What makes Waxhaw great?

Waxhaw still has that small town feel. It is a good feeling when you go to a local restaurant or store and bump into friends or co-workers. With the recent growth over the last few years, Waxhaw has become a town of many conveniences which translates to being able to stay within the town to shop, eat and play. Q: What are your hopes and dreams for the town of Waxhaw in the future?

That Waxhaw will continue to bring in Commercial ventures that add to the residents needs, whether that need is recreational or necessity. My biggest hope is that the Town of Waxhaw will find the balance between small town and city living. It is of the upmost importance to remember the history of Waxhaw and pass that along to the new residents that move into this great town and surrounding area. 14

Fire Department

Waxhaw Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1954 and incorporated in 1957 as Waxhaw Community Volunteer Fire Department. The first Fire Station was actually a barn of one of its members. In 1963, the Headquarters Station was built downtown on East North Main Street. The JAARS sub-station was built in 1988 and today is known as Station 27. The Fire Department and Rescue Squad merged in 1991 and the name changed to Waxhaw Community Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, Inc. Three years later in 1994, Ambulance Service transferred to Union County EMS. The Fire Department headquarters remained in downtown Waxhaw on Main Street for over 45 years but in May 2009 the department built and opened Station 18, which now serves as the Department headquarters.

Military Wall of Honor

Historic District

One of the most iconic images for the town is the overhead bridge, located in the heart of downtown. It was built in 1888 when the railroad company built a rail line to Atlanta. The narrow bridge served automobile traffic on the then main road through town over the railroad line until approximately 1940, when it was designated for pedestrian use only. In 2007, the town partnered with CSX to renovate and do a complete reconstruction of the bridge. Today, many people, young and old, climb the stairs to the top so they can stand on the wooden planks of the bridge as a train passes under their feet.

If you’ve ever been to downtown Waxhaw you’ve probably saw this silver tower. This 100,000-gallon steel structure looms over the downtown area with it’s close proximity to Main Street (Hwy. 75) and the railroad tracks that run through the center of town. On December 2, 1940, the Town Commissioners adopted a resolution to approve the building of the water tank by Taylor Water Works of Macon, GA , for $7,337. Back in those days it was said that whenever a person was returning to Waxhaw, they knew they were getting close to home when they saw the water tank.

The perpetual Military Wall of Honor was built in 2004 by the Waxhaw Community. Since 2004 over 500 brick tiles have been added. Currently there are over 800 names on the wall with room for at least 1000 more. Anyone who lives in the Waxhaw area, or who has friends or relatives who live in the Waxhaw area, may purchase a brick tile and have their information added to the wall. Waxhaw salutes the brave men and women and want this wall to remind them that WE WILL NEVER FORGET. The wall is maintained by the Waxhaw American Legion Post Auxiliary. Information is available on the website,

Get your walking shoes out. The Waxhaw Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places, and Waxhaw has some wonderful attractions and old buildings near the center of town which makes for a nice walking tour. The Waxhaw Historic Preservation Commission (WHPC) serves to protect, preserve and sustain the towns historic buildings, landmarks and unique character. It’s clear that Waxhaw residents are working to make sure that the town’s heritage will be preserved and treasured for years to come. This large clay urn was originally used at the RodmanHeath Mill. It was moved to the location of the current Dare Steele Memorial Garden in the mid-’80’s and was slightly damaged in the process and then moved to its current downtown location near the well around 2003. The well was originally dug circa 1900 to serve the trains and crews of the Depot and remained in use until the 1920’s. The current structure commemorates Waxhaw’s original community well which once stood near this spot. The replica was constructed in 1989 to commemorate the Town of Waxhaw Centennial.

The shopping experience in Waxhaw is distinctive in that it offers the consumer a wide array of retail shopping opportunities, ranging from downtown locally run antique shops to suburban shopping plazas and national chain retailers. Nestled in the heart of the town, vibrant Downtown Waxhaw is the place to be when it comes to an array of unique retailers providing an appealing mix of traditional and decidedly modern wares. It was not long ago that Waxhaw was regarded as a small, rural community. Still recognized for its open green spaces, picture-perfect farmland and overall rural character, the community is now making strides with wellmanaged housing and commercial development, placing it as one of the best upcoming places for businesses and residential living. Economic interests and a superior standard of living are finely balanced here, due to the effective collaboration between the Town’s governing body and its citizens. New, high-quality business developments are springing up throughout the high-traffic sectors so as not to jeopardize the ambiance of the community’s residential areas, which have remained remarkable in quality and affable in nature—characteristics that current residents and prospective buyers look for in superb suburban living.
