2013 SWOSU FOOTBALL FACT BOOK DUSTIN HADA Run Game Coordinator Dustin Hada was one of the first hires by Dan Cocannouer when he was named the Bulldogs new head football coach in 2009. He enters his fifth season as the Bulldogs line coach while also serving as the Run Game Coordinator. In 2012, offensive lineman Kane Bryen and running back Aaron Wilson were honorable mention All-Great American Conference selections after helping the Bulldogs rush for 144.0 yards per game, a mark that ranked fifth in the GAC. In total, Hada has tutored three offensive lineman and three running backs who have received allconference honors for SWOSU. Prior to joining the staff at SWOSU, Hada spent nine seasons on the staff at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University. Hada began his coaching career in 2000 when he served as the defensive line coach and helped Olivet to a No. 13 ranking in the final NAIA poll. That year the Tigers qualified for the NAIA Playoffs for only the second time in school history. Hada was eventually elevated to the position of defensive coordinator and remained in that position for his final six years. Hada has enjoyed a lengthy connection with Cocannouer extending back to Hada’s playing days at Alva High School where he was an all-district selection for the Goldbugs in 1994 and 1995. Hada played collegiately at Mid America Nazarene University, an NAIA school in Olathe, Kan. While at MANU, he was a threeyear starter in the offensive line and was awarded the team’s most inspirational player. The Pioneers made three consecutive postseason bowl appearances in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Hada has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Mid America Nazarene and later earned his master’s degree in teaching from Olivet Nazarene in 2002. He and his wife Dana, have a young daughter, Madelynn.
ADAM AGUIRRE Running Backs Adam Aguirre begins his second season on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University football coaching staff in 2013. He will continue to work with SWOSU’s running backs this season. In 2012, Aguirre mentored running back Aaron Wilson, an honorable mention All-Great American Conference performer after rushing for nearly 1,000 yards and six touchdowns. SWOSU averaged 145.5 yards per game on the ground, ranking fifth in the GAC. Aguirre came to SWOSU after one year of coaching at his alma mater, Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He coached the running backs for NWOSU in 2011 following his four-year playing career for the Rangers. As a player, Aguirre was a three-time all-conference offensive lineman for NWOSU and he was named an honorable mention NAIA All-American following his senior year in 2010. He helped the Rangers to two postseason appearances and served as the team’s captain as a senior. A native of Hennessey, Okla., Aguirre received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State in 2012 and he is now working towards his master’s degree in Sports Administration from Southwestern Oklahoma State.

He previously served as a graduate assistant for the Bulldogs in 2010 and 2011 following his standout playing career. Day won the quarterback starting job as a true freshman in 2005, taking over the position full time after just 12 fall practices. He guided the Bulldogs offensive fortunes for the next five years, missing the 2006 season with a shoulder injury. At the conclusion of his playing career, Day held the SWOSU career passing records in a number of categories, including completions (692), attempts (1,334), yards (7,482) and touchdowns (46). 2013 SWOSU FOOTBALL FACT BOOK TODD HELTON Defensive Coordinator
Todd Helton has been the constant link between the Bulldogs past and present, spending more than 20 seasons on the SWOSU football coaching staff. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience and has put together some of the league’s toprated defensive units for more than two decades. Last season, the Bulldogs defense ranked third in the Great American Conference with 14 inteceptions, with four apiece from Terrance Franklin and Brandon Washington. Defensive lineman Devin Benton earned All-GAC honors for the second consecutive season, this time a first team selection, giving the SWOSU defense five all-conference players total the past two years. In 2011, SWOSU safety Clarence Laster earned several AllAmerican honors for the Bulldogs after leading the Great American Conference with eight interceptions and a total of 97 tackles. His eight interceptions were the most by a SWOSU player since 1980 and ranked third in all of NCAA Division II. Laster was a three-time GAC Player of the Week that season and he was named a first team All-American by Daktronics and a second team selection on the Associated Press Little All-America squad. His other All-America honors were second team selections by Don Hansen and D2Football. com. A native of Perryton, Texas, Helton himself was an NAIA AllAmerican for the Bulldogs in the late 1980’s under longtime SWOSU coach Paul Sharp. His 197 career tackles and 15 sacks rank him among the school’s all time leaders for lineman. Helton earned his bachelor’s and his master’s degree from SWOSU. He was recently honored with induction into the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletics Hall of Fame on Feb. 6, 2010. He has two daughters, Kennedie and Ireland Helton.

In 2012, Smithey was named an honorable mention All-American by the Don Hansen Football Committee to go along with second team All-Super Region III and first team All-Great American honors. In addition to his playing accolades, Smithey has been named to the All-Conference Academic Honor roll three times, twice while the Bison were a member of the Gulf South Conference and in 2011 in the inaugural year of the Great American Conference. TOBY TROTTER Defensive Backs Toby Trotter enters his fifth season working with the SWOSU defensive backs in 2013. He was one of the first assistants hired by head coach Dan Cocannouer when he took over the program in 2009. Along with the secondary, Trotter has coordinated all the recruiting efforts for the Bulldogs since 2009. In SWOSU’s Great American Conference tenure, Trotter has coached two players to all-conference honors as cornerback Marvin Tribble and safety Clarence Laster were both first team selections in 2011. Laster went on to earn several All-American honors for the Bulldogs after leading the GAC with eight interceptions and finishing with 97 tackles. His eight interceptions were the most by a SWOSU player since 1980 and ranked third in all of NCAA Division II. Along with the GAC achievements Trotter coached two LSC North All-Conference players in 2010, 1st team All-Conference Safety Jonathan Darby and 2nd Team All-Conference Cornerback Marvin Tribble. The Bulldog defense ranked #1 in pass defense in conference play in both 2010 and 2011, along with averaging 15 interceptions per year between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Trotter coached previously at Southern Nazarene University and Louisiana College where he served as an assistant on both sides of the football. At SNU, he served as defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator from 2001 to 2003. During that time, SNU’s defenses annually finished among the NAIA ‘s top 15. Trotter, a graduate of Westmoore High School, obtained a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Masters Degree in Sports Management from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He and his wife, Cari, have three young children, Cade, Ainsley, and Shelby.
JONATHAN DARBY Defensive Backs Jonathan Darby has joined the coaching staff at SWOSU following a standout career at safety for the Bulldogs. He will assist in coaching the Bulldog defensive backs in 2013. Darby was a first-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division selection in 2010 when he led the team in tackles with 91 despite missing the final two games of the season. He missed the 2011 season to rehabilitate an ankle injury exhausting his playing eligibility in 2012. Darby was the Bulldogs second-leading tackler in 2012, finishing the year with 73 stops (29 solo, 44 assist) with 4.5 tackles for loss and seven pass breakups.
