2014 SWOSU SOCCER FACT BOOK
2014 SWOSU SOCCER SEASON OUTLOOK When Mark Persson was hired to lead the SWOSU Soccer program prior to the 2009 season, he inherited a program that had struggled since its inception in the late 1990’s. After three seasons with a combined 20 wins, Persson and the Bulldogs have had the two best seasons in program history, combining for 33 wins and two conference championships in 2012 and 2013. The new challenge for Persson and company becomes building upon that success without the service of his inaugural recruiting class, one that produced a three-time Great American Conference Defender of the Year, three First Team All-GAC selections and three All-Central Region choices along with several other starters and key contributors to the lineup. In total, the Bulldogs lost seven starters off of last season’s team, but 12 letterwinners return to help Persson build his lineup. Persson is optimistic about the outlook for SWOSU in 2014, despite the fact he will field a team with a youthful look at times. He feels that his program has reached a level where they can recruit players who are immediately able to RANDA CASTLEBERRY make an impact on the field. “The players are what makes the program go,” Persson said. “We’ve upgraded the talent level with players that have bought in to what we’re trying to do. Last year’s seniors gave their commitment to SWOSU on the basis of what we could do, but now the girls coming in have bought into the challenge of trying to continue that success and build a tradition.” The 2014 roster is shaping up with two seniors and eight upperclassmen on paper, but Persson is expecting to have fewer than that at his disposal. Senior Samantha Nunez and junior Miranda Balezentis are both slated to take a redshirt this season while recovering from injury. That leaves Randa Castleberry as the only senior in the lineup. WWW.SWOSUATHLETICS.COM
“We’ve got good players,” Persson said. “We feel very comfortable playing our newcomers early in their career and we’ll play with some things during the preseason to see what the best combinations are for our team. We’ll be young, but we do return some players with experience that we will look to for leadership and composure on the field.” Heading that list of returners is the last two players to be named GAC Freshman of the Year: Ashlee Beitinger and ASHLEE BEITINGER Courtney Flores. Beitinger enters her junior season with two all-conference accolades while Flores also took home the GAC Goalkeeper of the Year award last year following a standout freshman season. Flores enters the fall as the only keeper on the roster, making it essential that she stays healthy for her sophomore season. In front of Flores will be a balanced cast of newcomers and returners, despite the loss of the all-conference duo of Kira Bertrand and Natalie Crosslin. Bertrand was a three-time GAC Defender of the Year while Crosslin also earned three all-conference nods in a Bulldog uniform. Castleberry and Charlotte Eastman both provide experience in the back while a talented group of freshmen join the mix. Lauren Williams (Coseley, England) and Maya Hay (Aberdeen, Scotland) come to SWOSU from across the pond and are expected to play right away while also being challenged by in-state signees Ryle Danker (Yukon) and Lauren Martin (Newcastle). Beitinger is one of four returners for SWOSU in the midfield, where she will be joined by junior Payton Warren and sophomore Alyssa Bagley and Cindy Ramos. Persson also has Sky Glass, who redshirted in 2013, CHARLOTTE EASTMAN @SWOSUSOCCER

2014 SWOSU SOCCER SEASON OUTLOOK along with a trio of signees entering camp in the competition. Newcomers in the midfield include Olivia Butler (Oklahoma City), Jasmine Heffley (Denton, Texas), and Shelley Mueller (Enid). SWOSU has three forwards returning with experience, including juniors Eva Rule and Cori Kelly, who combined to score seven goals last season. Hannah Elrod also returns after playing in 14 matches as a freshman. The trio is joined EVA RULE by freshman Aimi Mumford (Frisco, Texas), who will join the position battle in camp. “The good thing about our team, statistically, is that our goals have been spread out to several different players,” Persson said when asked about where they will look for offense. “That is one of strengths because we have five or six girls scoring goals for us. We will definitely be scoring by committee this season. A lot of that goal scoring comes from team chemistry and girls learning to work together, which will take some time.” SCHEDULE The quest to return his team to the NCAA Division II Tournament led Persson to loading up his non-conference schedule. Strength of schedule is the one aspect of the selection process that has worked against the Bulldogs in recent seasons, but that should not be a worry for SWOSU in 2014. “We’ve tried to build our program by continuing to challenge the players,” Persson said when explaining his schedule this season. “They’ve always responded and stepped up to the challenge. With our conference still not having COURTNEY FLORES an automatic qualifier to the national tournament, we’ve had to raise the bar BACK-2-BACK GAC CHAMPIONS
with our non-conference schedule. This is the strongest non-conference schedule we’ve ever had and it’s probably one of the best within our region.” SWOSU will face eight non-conference opponents, including two that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season. The Bulldogs open up against the defending champions of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), Minnesota State-Mankato, one of the hosts of the Central Regional last season. SWOSU then hosts Minot State before going on the road to Central Oklahoma. The other NCAA Tournament team from last year, Midwestern State, comes to Weatherford in September along with another former Lone Star Conference foe of the Bulldogs, West Texas A&M. SWOSU will go on the road to face future GAC member Oklahoma Baptist but their other non-conference games will bring Dallas Baptist and Angelo State to town. Along with the non-conference portion of the slate, the Bulldogs will play a homeand-home series with the other five soccerplaying members of the Great American Conference as they search for a third straight conference championship. “We’ve taken on the mantra here of ‘One Game at a Time’,” Persson said about the mindset of his program. CORI KELLY “You can’t change what has already happened, you can only build off of it and you can’t look ahead to that next game. I feel very confident that we have players coming in and returning that are good enough to win a conference championship. Now it’s just a matter of us getting that work done and putting ourselves in a position to do so.

HEAD COACH MARK PERSSON Mark Persson has orchestrated an amazing turnaround in the SWOSU women’s soccer program since taking over in 2009. Persson enters his sixth season with the Bulldogs in 2014 as the Bulldogs all-time winningest coach with a record of 53-36-8. Persson is a two-time conference Coach of the Year with the Bulldogs, earning the honor for the Lone Star Conference in 2009 and again from the GAC in SWOSU’s record-setting 2012 campaign. His teams have now won back-to-back GAC regular season and tournament championships with a record of 16-1-2 against conference foes during that time. The 2013 squad repeated as GAC Champions by finishing the regular season 7-1-1, three points ahead of second-place Ouachita Baptist. The Bulldogs then cruised through the conference tournament, defeating East Central and Harding by a combined score of 7-0 to claim a second straight tournament championship. SWOSU just missed out on a second straight bid to the

NCAA Division II national tournament after they qualified in 2012. With the success of the team came several more postseason accolades. Kira Bertrand was named the GAC Defender of the Year for the second consecutive season while Courtney Flores earned both Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year honors following a standout freshman campaign at SWOSU. The Bulldogs placed four on the All-GAC First Team (Bertrand, Flores, Jessica Carbonara & Kelsey Visor) and two more on the second team (Ashlee Beitinger & Natalie Crosslin), bringing their three-year total to 23 (14 first team, seven second team, two honorable mention). In addition to those honors, Bertrand was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Central Region First Team for the second straight season while Carbonara and Visor both earned second team all-region honors. 2014 SWOSU SOCCER FACT BOOK not having an all-region player earn such honors in the first 14 years of the programs existence. Persson’s 2012 team became the first in school history to advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, where they defeated Minot State 3-0 before falling to host Central Missouri by the same score in the second round of the Central Regional. The Bulldogs were the only team in NCAA Division II to complete the regular season without a loss, ending the season with a record of 20-1-1. For their efforts in 2012, the Bulldogs received several postseason awards including a very impressive sweep of the Great American Conference specialty awards: Josie Price was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Kira Bertrand won Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, Corey LaMoureaux was the Goalkeeper of the Year and Ashlee Beitinger earned Freshman of the Year. Persson completed the sweep with his Coach of the Year Award. Beyond that, Price was named a First Team All-Central Region and First Team All-American selection, becoming the first NSCAA All-American in SWOSU soccer history. Bertrand (first team) and LaMoureaux (third team) joined Price on the All-Central Region team. Persson took over a program that had combined to win three games in the two seasons prior to his arrival. His teams won at least six games in each of his first three seasons before breaking through with the 20-1-1 record in 2012. Before coming to SWOSU, Persson had spent 12 years as a high school and college coach, the last eight of which were spent at Southern Nazarene University. At SNU, he initially served as the men’s head coach and posted a 100-33-14 in eight-plus years. His teams made five consecutive trips to the NAIA National Tournament and advanced to in the National Final 4 in 2005. He then served in the dual capacity as both the men’s and women’s head coach in the 2006 and 2007 before only coaching the women in 2008. In the 2008 season at SNU, his team finished with a 14-2-3 record and were ranked as high as No. 13 in the final NAIA poll. The SNU women went 32-19-7 in three years under his guidance, included back-to-back winning seasons in 2007 and 2008. A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, Persson is a 1996 graduate of SNU where he was a two-time NAIA All-American for the school. He then went on to play semi-professionally with the Oklahoma City Slickers before taking over the men’s and women’s coaching duties at Phillips University in 1997. He led the Phillips men to the 1997 Sooner Athletic Conference championship and was voted the league’s coach of the year, the first of now seven times that he received such an award. He remained in Enid after Phillips shuttered its doors in 1998 coaching both at Enid High School and later Northern Oklahoma College-Enid. Persson then moved to Bethany in 2001 when he joined the SNU coaching staff on a full-time basis. He and his wife Sheila, have three young children.

GREAT AMERICAN CONFERENCE The Great American Conference is one of the newest in NCAA Division II, first taking the field in the fall of 2011. Entering its fourth year of competition, the GAC continues to establish itself on the field of play against the very tough Central Region/Super Region 3. The NCAA announced on March 9, 2011 that the Great American Conference was officially accepted as the 23rd NCAA Division II athletics conference. Although the new league was new, it was a concept that had been informally discussed since the early 1990’s between institutions from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nine charter members (Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State) agreed to form a new NCAA Division II athletic conference in July 2010 and notified their respective leagues of the decision. In November of 2010, the league was stamped as the Great American Conference and announced in March of 2011 that it would become the 23rd active member conference in NCAA Division II. Will Prewitt, previously an associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), was selected as the first GAC Commissioner and appointed to his post one month before the league had officially been named. He is joined on staff by Associate Commisioner for Compliance Audra Tope, Assistant Commissioner for Communications Eric Moyer and Assistant Commissioner for Operations Stephanie Prewitt. The nine founding members began active membership within the NCAA Division II ranks on September 1, 2011. Earlier that summer, Southern Nazarene was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and they were extended a provisional invitation to join the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma State also received a provisional invitation after being accepted into the process in the summer of 2012. Southern Nazarene becomes an active championship member of the GAC for the 2014-15 season while Northwestern Oklahoma State will do the same the following year.
