HEAD COACH JOSH COLLINS Josh Collins became the second head volleyball coach in Southwestern Oklahoma State University history on January 1, 2012 when he agreed to take over for longtime-coach and mentor Bo Pagliasotti. He will enter his third season as the head coach of the Bulldogs in 2014 with a record of 26-41 through two years. Collins has tutored five players who have earned All-Great American Conference honors the past two seasons, including middle hitter Alison Cole, who became just the second First Team All-Conference player in the history of SWOSU Volleyball. Carly Zak added another first for the program after being named the GAC Freshman of the Year following a stellar first year with the Bulldogs. Zak and Joey Collins both earned second team allconference honors, giving SWOSU three honorees on an allconference team for only the second time in school history. The Bulldogs finished tied for fourth in the GAC standings in 2013 with an 8-6 conference mark and they completed their season with 13 victories for the second straight season, matching the second-highest win total in program history. In addition, some of their numbers stack up against the best in SWOSU history, including the most single-season blocks (249) and the secondmost kills (1,525), attack percentage (.170), assists (1,429) and digs (2,037). HEAD COACH JOSH COLLINS His first team faced a daunting non-conference schedule before coming together in Great American Conference play. The Bulldogs had an overall four-win improvement from 2011, finishing 13-19 with a fourth-place finish in the GAC at 10-4. SWOSU finished ahead of the other four Oklahoma-based schools in the conference standings by at least two games. At the GAC Tournament, SWOSU defeated Ouachita Baptist in the quarterfinals, earning the first postseason victory in program history. In the semifinals, SWOSU went toe-to-toe with conference champion and tournament-host Harding, taking the Lady Bisons to five sets before succumbing 15-11. Collins mentored two players – Alison Cole and Lindsay Dusin – who earned all-conference honors in 2012. Cole was a second team selection at middle hitter while Dusin was honorable mention as a setter. Dusin was also named to the GAC All-Tournament team. While 2012 was his first season as the head volleyball coach, Collins is certainly no newcomer to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He arrived in Weatherford in 2004 from Clarendon College and he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach under Scott Reed in 2004-05 and later with current athletic director and former basketball coach Todd Thurman during the 2006-07 season. Starting in 2005, Collins worked as a dual assistant for SWOSU, assisting with basketball while also helping Pagliasotti start the volleyball program. He served as an assistant volleyball coach for seven seasons before taking over prior to the 2012 season. Collins, a native of Hedley, Texas, holds two degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2006 before completing his master’s degree in Sports Management in 2008. He and his wife, Jamie, were married in June 2012 and reside in Weatherford.

CLOSE CALLS KEEP BULLDOGS FROM BREAKOUT SEASON Expectations were high for the SWOSU volleyball program entering the 2013 season, a position not familiar for the Bulldogs, after a fourth-place finish and semifinal appearance in the Great American Conference tournament in 2012. After being picked to finish third in the GAC last season, SWOSU battled another tough non-conference schedule to finish 13-21 and 8-6 in the conference to finish in a tie for fourth. The season started on a high note with consecutive wins over Eastern New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands on the first day of the Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational in Wichita Falls, Texas, but the Bulldogs record quickly evened up after falling to Midwestern State and Emporia State on the following day. Middle hitter Alison Cole earned All-Tournament Team honors after finishing with 41 kills and a .372 hitting percentage in the four matches at the event. SWOSU then returned home for the home opener, a sweep of Oklahoma City before returning to tournament play in Colorado. The Bulldogs went 0-4 at the event, falling late in the fifth set against Southwest Baptist and Lindenwood and succumbing in four sets to CSU-Pueblo. SWOSU’s fourth opponent at the tournament was No. 8 Wayne State, who defeated the Bulldogs in straight sets. Despite the winless effort, Cole again earned All-Tournament Team at the honors at the event. Conference action began the following week as the Bulldogs held off Northwestern Oklahoma State in four sets at home to get their record back to 4-6 before a triangular saw the Dawgs fall twice in straight sets against Texas A&MKingsville and No. 15 West Texas A&M. That slide would push to four matches after conference losses at East Central and Southern Nazarene before the Bulldogs turned things around on the road by sweeping a road trip at Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello. That win streak was then run to three matches by defeating Cameron in a five-set thriller in Rankin Williams Fieldhouse. The final tournament action saw SWOSU face four teams from the vaunted MIAA, including the No. 4-ranked team in the country, Central Missouri. The Bulldogs finished 0-4 at the tournament, dropping their record to 7-14 as they returned home for a three-game set. SWOSU went 1-2 in that trio of matches, defeating Henderson State in straight sets while falling in a pair of five-set contests to Oklahoma Baptist and Ouachita Baptist. The Bulldogs then went to Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant and came home with an impressive four-set victory, leading into a home set with two of the top teams in the GAC. Harding and Southern Nazarene both needed four sets to defeat the Bulldogs, who then responded with victories at Northwestern Oklahoma State and against East Central to raise their conference record back over .500. After being swept at Arkansas Tech, the Bulldogs did the same thing to Cameron, sweeping the season series from the Aggies to earn their first wins over them since the inception of the program. SWOSU also completed the season sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State to conclude GAC play at 8-6 and in a tie for fourth. A loss against Midwestern State wrapped up the regular season and sent the Bulldogs into the Great American Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed In the GAC Tournament, SWOSU was paired with Ouachita Baptist for the second straight season. The Tigers won a close first set before SWOSU took sets two and three to take control 2013 Honor Roll of the match. OBU responded by dominating the fourth set to set up another All-Great American Conference five-set thriller between the teams. In the end, it was Ouachita Baptist again FIRST TEAM surviving by a 16-14 count in the fifth set, ending SWOSU’s season at 13-21. Alison Cole MH Long Island, Kan. The 13 wins tied the third-most in school history in what was one of the best statistical seasons in program history. The Bulldogs finished with 1,525 SECOND TEAM kills (2nd most in school history), a .170 hitting percentage (2nd), 1,429 assists Joey Collins OH Frisco, Texas (2nd), 2,037 digs (2nd) and 249 blocks (1st) to go along with several individual Carly Zak OH Wylie, Texas records and accolades. Cole became just the second player in SWOSU volleyball history to earn FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR first team all-conference honors and she did so after a record-breaking senior Carly Zak OH Wylie, Texas campaign. She set school records with 111 block assists and 135 total blocks along with 348 kills, the fifth-most in a single season at SWOSU. Her attack ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Alison Cole (Midwestern State Invitational) percentage of .267 also ranks her third in a season. The SWOSU outside hitting duo of Joey Collins and Carly Zak were both Alison Cole (Thunderwolves Classic) named to the All-GAC second team while Zak brought home the hardware GAC Players of the Week for GAC Freshman of the Year, becoming the first player in program history Joey Collins Offensive Oct. 8 to earn the award. GREAT AMERICAN CONFERENCE The Great American Conference is one of the newest in NCAA Division II, first taking the field in the fall of 2011. Entering its fourth year of competition, the GAC continues to establish itself on the field of play against the very tough Central Region/Super Region 3. The NCAA announced on March 9, 2011 that the Great American Conference was officially accepted as the 23rd NCAA Division II athletics conference. Although the new league was new, it was a concept that had been informally discussed since the early 1990’s between institutions from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nine charter members (Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State) agreed to form a new NCAA Division II athletic conference in July 2010 and notified their respective leagues of the decision. In November of 2010, the league was stamped as the Great American Conference and announced in March of 2011 that it would become the 23rd active member conference in NCAA Division II. Will Prewitt, previously an associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), was selected as the first GAC Commissioner and appointed to his post one month before the league had officially been named. He is joined on staff by Associate Commisioner for Compliance Audra Tope, Assistant Commissioner for Communications Eric Moyer and Assistant Commissioner for Operations Stephanie Prewitt. The nine founding members began active membership within the NCAA Division II ranks on September 1, 2011. Earlier that summer, Southern Nazarene was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and they were extended a provisional invitation to join the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma State also received a provisional invitation after being accepted into the process in the summer of 2012. Southern Nazarene becomes an active championship member of the GAC for the 2014-15 season while Northwestern Oklahoma State will do the same the following year.
