FORT HAYS STATE

2012 OUTLOOK

Many Unknowns for Tigers Entering 2012 The 2012 Fort Hays State softball team will feature a new look this season following the loss of two four-year starters and a trio of other contributors. Four starters do return for the Tigers, but first-year head coach Erin Kinberger is going to rely heavily on newcomers as she tries to lead the program to its fourth consecutive 30-win season. The Tigers roster is top heavy with eight upperclassmen, but only five of them were with the team last season and four of them were prominent starters. The most experienced player for FHSU is junior utility player Maddie Holub, who has earned All-MIAA honors in both of her years with the program. Holub hit .313 in 2011 and led the team in runs scored (34) while also ranking near the team lead in almost every offensive category. She also is a force in the pitching circle, winning 29 games and striking out 323 batters in her two years. Two other returners earned All-MIAA accolades last season, led by first baseman Adriana Wortley, who has been named an All-MIAA and All-South Central Region selection each of the past two years. Last season, Wortley batted .300 and hit six home runs while batting in 26 runs. Wortley enters 2012 needing three home runs to set the career record for home runs at Fort Hays State. Danie Brinkmann was an honorable mention All-MIAA pick at shortstop last season after transferring to FHSU from Creighton. She had the second-best batting average (.323) on the team and she drew 26 walks, which ranks second in school history for a single season. Beyond those four, very little experience returns, leaving Kinberger hoping that her recruiting class, which features four junior college transfers and four freshman, is ready to contribute immediately.

SCHEDULE The Tigers open the 2012 season on February 14 with a doubleheader against former-RMAC foe Nebraska-Kearney, who will join the MIAA next season. Following that, FHSU will be in action at tournaments for three consecutive weekends. The first two weekends are tournaments in Texas hosted by Midwestern State and Texas Women’s before the Missouri Southern Crossover in Joplin, Mo. After tournament play, the Tigers take a road trip Oklahoma where they will face Panhandle State and Southwestern Oklahoma State before opening up the 20-game MIAA schedule. In conference play, Fort Hays State will host Washburn (March 10), Central Missouri (March 16), Southwest Baptist (March 17), Pittsburg State (April 21) and Missouri Southern

(April 23). Conference road series will be played at Lincoln (March 24), Missouri Western (March 30), Emporia State (March 31), Truman (April 13) and Northwest Missouri State (April 14). In addition to the conference slate, Fort Hays State will play five non-conference doubleheaders during the conference season. The Tigers will travel to future-MIAA foes Lindenwood (March 23) and Nebraska-Kearney (April 10) in a return game. Visiting Hays will be two other teams who will be joining the MIAA next year: Central Oklahoma (April 6) and Northeastern State (April 7). FHSU will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on April 17 with a visit from Newman.

INFIELD Two of the Tigers four starters on the infield are back, with both being All-MIAA players from a year ago. Adriana Wortley (Tacoma, Wash.) is a twotime All-MIAA and All-South Central Region first baseman and she is on the verge of breaking the school record for career home runs. Wortley has started all 104 for FHSU in the past two years and for her career she has batted .311 with 17 doubles, 18 home runs and 68 RBI. Danie Brinkmann

2

(Foristell, Mo.) was an All-MIAA honorable mention selection at shortstop last year after batting.323 with 16 extra-base hits and 22 RBI. Brinkmann started all 52 games for the Tigers at shortstop in 2011 and she is the favorite to do so again this season. Transfers will likely fill the other two positions on the infield, with Kellsi Olsen (Wickenburg, Ariz.) the favorite to play at second base and Chelsey Rottinghaus (Seneca, Kan.) likely to start at third

TIGER SOFTBALL base. Olsen is a mid-year transfer from Glendale (Ariz.) Community College where she played one year at shortstop and batted .281. Rottinghaus was a two-time All-American at Labette (Kan.) Community College, helping the Cardinals to Region 6 and Jayhawk Conference Championships in 2011. Senior Christine Moses (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman Yasnaya Susoeff (Macksville, Kan.) will

be called upon to provide depth in the infield. Moses has game experience from the past two years, making 31 starts in her career after joining the Tigers her sophomore season. Susoeff was a two-time allarea selection at Macksville High School and she has the versatility to provide depth at most positions in the Tiger infield.

OUTFIELD Two newcomers who will be leaned on instantly are freshman Madison Putman (Wichita, Kan.) and Amanda Vaupel (Olathe, Kan.). Putman was a two-time Class 6A all-state selection and a member of the 2010 Class 6A State Championship team at Maize High School. Vaupel played for two regional champion teams in her career at Olathe North High School, earning two all-conference selections. Depth in the outfield will come from three utility players who might also be called upon to pitch. Breanna Beckerman (Inman, Kan.) played two years at Pratt (Kan.) Community College, where she earned all-region and all-conference honors as a utility player in 2011. Kaitlyn Shattleroe (Garden City, Mich.) transferred to Hays from Oakland (Mich.) Community College where she batted .431 last year, but her impact is expected more from the circle. Abby Morrison (Great Bend, Kan.) was a four-time all-league after splitting time at Larned High School and Great Bend High School.

CATCHER The Tigers enter 2012 with only one player on the roster listed as a catcher, so expect Callie Wright (Topeka, Kan.) to be behind the plate for most, if not all, games this year. Last year, Wright saw action in

41 games in the Fort Hays State outfield, but this year she will return to catching, which was her listed position when she was recruited. Wright batted .171 in 2011 with three extra-base hits and three RBI.

2012 OUTLOOK

The Fort Hays State outfield will have a new look this year following the graduations of Kayla Rupa and Sara Tani. Tani was a staple at center field for the Tigers for the past four years, while Rupa spent time in right field when she was not in the pitching circle. The Tigers do have two players returning with experience in the outfield. Maddie Holub (Hays, Kan.) transitioned to left field last season after playing in the infield as a freshman. Holub will do the same this season when she is not pitching. With the graduation of Rupa, Holub will be called upon more to pitch so the amount of time she spends in the outfield is uncertain. Taylor Nelson (Kansas City, Mo.) will also see time in the outfield, with the versatility to play at either of the corner spots. Nelson made 40 starts last season, although most of those were as the designated player, and batted .273 with nine doubles and 18 RBI.

PITCHERS The good news about the Fort Hays State pitching staff is that they have four players capable of throwing, including Maddie Holub (Hays, Kan.), who has already pitched more than 300 innings in a Tiger uniform and won 29 games. The bad news is, that, beyond Holub, the Tigers have no pitching experience and they must replace Kayla Rupa, who holds almost every FHSU career record related to pitching. As a sophomore, Holub pitched 21 complete games, finishing the year with a 15-8 record and a 2.27 ERA. This year, she made be called upon to throw more depending on how the young pitchers develop.

Kaitlyn Shattleroe (Garden City, Mich.) is the projected No. 2 starter for the Tigers after being a first team all-region selection for Oakland (Mich.) Community College last season. Shattleroe was 12-9 with a 3.09 ERA last year and she was named the MVP of the District H Regional tournament. Breanna Beckerman (Inman, Kan.) also has college pitching experience after playing two years at Pratt (Kan.) Community College. Last season, Beckerman had an 8-7 record and a 1.78 ERA and was named earned conference honors as a utility player. Abby Morrison (Great Bend, Kan.) has pitching experience from high school and she will most likely be used in spot situations.

HEAD COACH ERIN KINBERGER

FORT HAYS STATE ERIN KINBERGER Erin Kinberger was named the head softball coach at Fort Hays State on June 20, 2011. Kinberger becomes the seventh head coach of the Tigers in program history. Kinberger (formerly Brunt) takes over the reigns of the program after spending the last three seasons as the assistant coach of the Tigers. She helped lead the team to three consecutive 30-win seasons, including a runnerup finish at the MIAA Tournament in 2011. As an assistant, Kinberger was responsible for helping with all areas of the Lady Tigers softball program, focusing mainly on the development of catchers and infielders. Under her tutelage, Tiger catcher Malinee Powell became an All-MIAA and All-South Central Region First Team selection as a sophomore in 2011. Off the field, her duties included assisting in team management, recruiting, scouting, fundraising, and alumni relations. Kinberger came to Fort Hays State from Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida, where she spent one year as a graduate assistant following a solid four-year playing career as the Lions’ catcher. Her graduate assistant duties included recruiting, scouting, tutoring student-athletes, organizing community service, and field maintenance. During her year as a graduate assistant, the Lions finished 37-15, tying for second place in the Sunshine State Conference. They finished third in the South Region rankings, and 19th in the NFCA Division II poll. As a player, Kinberger was part of two teams that qualified for the NCAA Division II South Regional, earning all-conference honors all four years and Second Team All-South Region in 2006. In addition to those honors, she was the recipient of the 2006 Women in Sports Sodexho Scholarship; 2007 Sunshine State Conference Female Sportsmanship Award; 2005-2006 SLU Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award; 2005-2006 SLU Community Award; 2004-2005 SLU Personal Development Award; and was a four time NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. Kinberger was a career .291 hitter; finishing third all-time in Lions softball history with career home runs (12) and fourth all-time in career doubles (40). Kinberger was the Head Coach in the summer of 2007 for Team FLA 16U and moved up to Head Coach of Team FLA 18U Gold in the summer of 2008. “Fort Hays State is a great place, and I appreciate Curtis Hammeke and Dr. Hammond believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead the Tiger Softball program,” Kinberger said. “I’m ready to get to work, and help Tiger Softball reach new heights. It’s my goal to build a program the Tiger fans and university can be proud of and cheer on for many years to come.” A native of Clearwater, Fla., Kinberger earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Saint Leo University in 2007 and earned a master’s degree in Health and Human Performance from Fort Hays State University in 2009.

FORT HAYS STATE

2011 SEASON REVIEW

TIGERS END 2011 WITH DEEP RUN IN MIAA TOURNAMENT

22

While Fort Hays State struggled to find consistency during the 2011 season, the Tigers had their game together at the end of the season and made a run to the championship game of the MIAA Postseason Tournament as the tournament’s No. 7 seed. There the Tigers would run into Nebraska-Omaha, the team responsible for handing FHSU both losses in the tournament. Fort Hays State would finish the season with a record of 30-22, the third consecutive 30win season under head coach Julie LeMaire, marking the first time in school history that the Tigers have won 30 games in three straight seasons. Following the season, LeMaire accepted the head coaching at league rival Emporia State, leaving Hays after producing the second-most wins (92) in school history and the second-best winning percentage (.548) of any coach in the program’s history. Fort Hays State opened the season in early February with a pair of doubleheaders in Colorado. The Tigers swept Colorado Mines in two one-run games, including a 5-4 win in 13 innings. Maddie Holub was in the circle for the entire game, breaking the school record for innings pitched in a single game. Holub tripled in the top of the 13th and drove in two runs to put FHSU on top and she came around to score what would be the deciding run following an Adriana Wortley single. The next day, the Tigers split a doubleheader against No. 15 Metro State, winning the first game 6-5 before dropping the second 11-7. The Tigers took a week off before opening the tournament portion of the schedule at the Missouri Southern / Pittsburg State Border Battle in Joplin, Mo., where they would face five non-conference opponents. FHSU went 3-1 at the tournament, defeating Drury, Rockhurst and Southeastern Oklahoma State while falling to Quincy (Ill.). The tournament started with a dramatic finish after the Tigers beat Drury 10-8 in extra innings after Danie Brinkmann hit a walkoff three-run homerun. FHSU then downed Rockhurst 7-0 before falling to Quincy 4-3 in 12 innings, but they rebounded to claim a 16-5 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State. With a 6-2 record, Fort Hays State began to gain some national recognition and they were among the teams receiving votes in the March 2 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Poll. The next week took the Tigers south, where they would play five games at a tournament hosted by Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. The offense was a struggle the first two days at the tournament, with FHSU unable to manufacture a single run in losses to Arkansas Tech, Incarnate Word and No. 13 Midwestern State. However, the final day of the tournament featured Fort Hays State shutting out their opponents, beating St. Edward’s (Texas) 1-0 before dropping Abilene Christian 5-0 to give the Tigers a 2-3 record for the weekend. The final tournament play for Fort Hays State was at the MIAA South Crossover in Springfield, Mo., where the Tigers would get their first look at some of the MIAA’s top teams. Once again struggling to find offense, the Tigers went just 2-3 at the crossover, knocking off Lincoln and Pittsburg

State but falling against Emporia State, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern. FHSU managed just 10 runs in five games while giving up 19. The Tigers would finally snap out of the offensive slump during the second game of a midweek doubleheader at Central Oklahoma. After winning the first game 1-0, FHSU erupted for 10 runs in a 10-5 victory which gave them a sweep of the Bronchos. Conference play opened with No. 24 Nebraska-Omaha and Northwest Missouri State visiting Hays and sweeping the Tigers, putting them in an 0-4 hole to start MIAA play. After a sweep of Panhandle State, conference play resumed with No. 16 Emporia State. The Hornets took game one 4-3 in 8 innings, but FHSU came back to earn a 7-2 victory in the second game. Missouri Western came to Hays next and also left with a sweep, leaving Fort Hays State 1-7 in the conference. Once the Tigers took to the road in conference play they found some success, winning four of the next six games. FHSU went to Topeka, Kan., where they swept Washburn before gaining splits against Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. In the 16-10 game one win over Pittsburg State, the Tigers tied the MIAA record for doubles in a single game with eight. Taylor Nelson, Sara Tani and Adriana Wortley each hit two doubles in the game while Danie Brinkmann and Tia Irwin both added one. Fort Hays State split with Southwestern Oklahoma State in their final non-conference series of the season, losing another tough one-run game in extra innings before getting a 2-1 win in the second game. The season’s last road trip took FHSU to Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist, where the Tigers would go 2-2 and bring their record to 7-11 in conference play. After gaining a 2-0 win over Central Missouri in game one, the Tigers lost the second game by the exact same score. The next day was more puzzling as the Tigers dropped Southwest Baptist 12-1 in a five-inning rune rule game, but were shutout by the Bearcats 2-0 in the second game. With four games remaining in the conference schedule, Fort Hays State was far from a lock to qualify for the MIAA Tournament and they needed a good finish against Lincoln and Truman. A good finish is exactly what they got, winning all four games and allowing just four runs total. The Tigers beat Lincoln by scores of 4-1 and 4-3 before getting two run-rule shutouts over Truman, 12-0 and 8-0, on Senior Day. FHSU finished conference play at 11-11 and qualified for the conference tourney for the fifth straight year after earning the No. 7 seed. As the No. 7 seed, the Tigers would face the No. 2-seed Emporia State, one of three teams who tied for the conference regular season crown. The Tigers struck first, with Malinee Powell hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put FHSU on top 3-0. Emporia State would get their only run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Tigers would do the rest of the damage in the top of the 4th inning. Taylor Nelson and Maddie Holub each had RBI singles in the inning before Danie Brinkmann

TIGER SOFTBALL As was typical when Fort Hays State and NebraskaOmaha faced off, the game was a low-scoring and featured great pitching. The Mavericks struck early, scoring in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. FHSU managed their only run on an RBI infield single from senior Kayla Rupa in the third inning. Nebraska-Omaha responded in the next inning, scoring the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice hit which put them up 2-1, a lead that they would maintain as they went on to win the the MIAA Postseason Tournament. The Tigers season ended with a record of 30-22, but the team finished the season strongly and their efforts did not go unnoticed. Malinee Powell led the list of eight players who were selected to the All-MIAA team. Powell earned first team honors at catcher while Adriana Wortley was a second team selection at first base. Honorable mention honors went to pitcher Kayla Rupa, outfielder Sara Tani, utility player Maddie Holub, second baseman Britney Workman, shortstop Danie Brinkmann, and third baseman Erin Dyok. Powell was also named to the Daktronics AllSouth Central Region First Team after her breakout season that saw her post a team-high .393 batting average. She also led the team in hits (70), doubles (13), home runs (9), RBI (50), total bases (114), and slugging percentage (.640). The 50 RBI tied for second-most in a single-season at FHSU as she became just the second person in FHSU history to earn an all-region first team selection. The end of the 2011 season also marked the end of two of the best four-year careers in Fort Hays State history. Kayla Rupa and Sara Tani both graduated but left their names scattered throughout the school record books. Rupa left as the school record-holder in almost every pitching category, including appearances (129), wins (62), complete games (94), innings pitched (753.2) and strikeouts (614). Tani holds school records for at bats (738), runs scored (127) and walks (52) and ranks second in hits (210) and games played (221).

2011 SEASON REVIEW

hit a grand slam which put Fort Hays State ahead 9-1, which proved to be the final margin. The reward for the Tigers was a meeting with third-seeded Nebraska-Omaha, who was ranked No. 21 in the country and also tied for the MIAA regular season championship. The Mavericks shutout FHSU 4-0 and sent the Tigers to the consolation side of the bracket. The first elimination game for the Tigers was against No.8-seed Washburn in a game that started as a pitching duel until FHSU scored two runs in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Nelson did the rest of the damage, hitting a three-run home run in the top of the sixth which put the Tigers up 5-0. Washburn came back to score three runs, but third baseman Erin Dyok turned an unassisted double play to end the game with two runners in scoring position. The win set up another meeting with Emporia State, who the Tigers had defeated the day before. This time, Fort Hays State took advantage of miscues by the Hornets, turning two ESU errors in the seventh inning into five runs and taking a 7-3 win. With the win, FHSU had eliminated seven-time defending tournament champion Emporia State from the tournament and moved on to play Missouri Western with a chance at the championship on the line. Fort Hays State, playing as the home team for the first time in the tournament, struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single from Malinee Powell which scored Erin Dyok. Dyok would follow that up with a solo home run in the sixth inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead going into the seventh. Missouri Western wouldn’t go down without a fight, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to push the game to extra innings and setting up for one of the tournament’s most dramatic moments. Taylor Nelson, who came to the plate with runners at first and second, ripped a shot past the first baseman and down the right field line far enough for Britney Workman to score the game-winning run. The 3-2 walkoff victory earned FHSU another shot at Nebraska-Omaha with the tournament championship on the line.

Assistant Director of Administrative Commissioner Communications Assistant The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, an 11-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA student-athletes have won 14 NCAA team championships and more than 100 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross-country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. Dr. Robert J. Boerigter became the fourth full-time commissioner in MIAA history when he succeeded Jim Johnson on September 20, 2010. Boerigter was previously the director of athletics at Northwest Missouri State University from July of 2001 through September of 2010. Former Commissioner Jim Johnson succeeded Ralph McFillen in July 2007. Johnson spent two seasons as athletic director at Texas A&M-Commerce before becoming the MIAA’s third full-time commissioner. He was with the MIAA for three years before becoming the Athletics Director at Pittsburg State. Ralph McFillen, formerly of the Metro and Gulf South conferences, succeeded Ken B. Jones, as commissioner of the MIAA in July 1997. Larry House joined the MIAA staff in the summer of 2007 to assist in the marketing of the conference and its events, as well as aid in the league’s external affairs. Kellen Coleman, previously a media relations assistant at the University of Kansas, became the director of communications in the summer of 2009. Lori Shumpert joined the MIAA as the Administrative Assistant on September 13, 2010. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where she majored in Exercise Science and worked in the athletics department as a student with compliance and football.

FORT HAYS STATE

FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY

About Fort Hays State University

48

Founded in 1902 on the plains of Western Kansas, Fort Hays State University is the second youngest of the state’s six universities. FHSU celebrated its centennial in 2002. From a humble but exciting beginning, when just two faculty members and a 19-course curriculum greeted 34 students, our university has grown to a faculty of nearly 300, a support staff of 250 and a student body of 9,000. The university now offers hundreds of courses in each of its four main colleges — Education, Arts and Sciences, Business and Leadership, and Health and Life Sciences — and the Graduate School. The FHSU Virtual College provides many of the courses through various media to sites across Kansas and beyond. FHSU is governed by a Board of Regents appointed by the governor of the state of Kansas. FHSU is located in Hays, the largest city in northwest Kansas. Hays began as a wild frontier town and has grown into a progressive community of about 20,000 people. The old and new blend beautifully to form a city that is small enough to be comfortable yet large enough to provide abundant cultural, commercial and entertainment opportunities. In 1996, Hays was recognized as an All-America City. The university sits on a campus of 4,160 acres of land that once was part of the historic Fort Hays frontier military post, and it recently expanded to include the relocated Sternberg Museum of Natural History on a site adjacent to Interstate 70 in northeast Hays. Big Creek, with its shady, grassy banks, meanders through the main campus, providing a tranquil learning atmosphere and serving as a natural laboratory for students in the biological sciences. With its stately limestone buildings and profuse flowers, trees and shrubs, our campus has often been called the prettiest in Kansas. FHSU is academically superior to many comparable universities, offers students an electronic learning and living environment, and is richly endowed by heritage and tradition. Students come to our university for a multitude of reasons, but surveys show that their overwhelming reason is “the university’s reputation for academic excellence and its caring faculty.” The university supports one of the most extensive and successful intercollegiate sports programs of any comparably sized college or university in America, boasting numerous All-American athletes and national championships. More than 350 athletes compete annually in eight men’s and eight women’s sports. FHSU is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which comprises 10 schools from the states of Kansas and Missouri. The university also serves as the cultural center of western Kansas, featuring fine arts exhibitions, performing arts presentations by faculty, students and traveling professional troupes, and a Presidential Lecture Series.

Dr. Edward H. Hammond - Fort Hays State University President Dr. Edward H. Hammond is the eighth President of Fort Hays State University. A man of boundless enthusiasm and energy whose style is upbeat and progressive, Dr. Hammond was born in McAllen, Texas, but raised in the Kansas City area. Prior to his current post, President Hammond gained educational experiences and shared his expertise at the universities of Louisville, Seton Hall, Southern Illinois, Purdue, and Missouri-Columbia. The President holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. President Hammond has been extremely active since assuming the leadership of the university in the summer of 1987. He laid the groundwork for a cooperative educational initiative between FHSU and the community colleges in western Kansas. He has watched his dream to totally computerize the campus become a reality and created an organization comprised of business and community leaders from 54 western Kansas counties and helped to establish scholarship programs for potential minority school teachers at Garden City and Liberal. Dr. Hammond has played a major role in furthering economic development in Hays and western Kansas and introduced a voice mail system that vaulted the foreign language efforts of FHSU into an elite class. He prompted the completion of the Beach/ Schmidt Performing Arts Center for the cultural development of the area and launched the expansion of Sternberg Museum to its new location on Interstate 70. He obtained federal and state funding for the university’s new $12 million science building and completed a $20 million capital campaign to raise private monies for the enhancement of many university programs. President Hammond has been published widely and is in demand nationally as an educational consultant because of his expertise in risk management, staff and institutional liability, sexual harassment, and alcohol education issues. Hammond is married to the former Mary Sprenkel. Hammond has two daughters, Kelly and Julie, and one son, Lance.

TIGER SOFTBALL Lewis Field Stadium

Gross Memorial Coliseum GROSS MEMORIAL COLISEUM is the home of Fort Hays State men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and indoor track and field. The coliseum is in its 39th year of operation in 2011-12. The 6,814-seat arena was finished in August of 1973 at a cost of seven million dollars. The Tigers made the move across campus from Sheridan Coliseum, which seated 2,000. Paul “Busch” Gross is the namesake of the Coliseum. Gross coached basketball at FHSU from 1930 to 1946 and also served as the athetic director at Fort Hays State for several years. Major renovations took place in the coliseum in the summer of 2011 with the installation of a completely new playing surface and indoor track, and remodeled locker rooms for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The old wood surface, which had been in place for at least a couple of decades, was stripped down to the cement underneath and replaced with a more forgiving wood surface. On the new playing surface, a larger Tiger logo was painted around the midcourt circle. A new track was laid over the existing one around the outside of the wood playing surface. Remodeled locker rooms for the basketball teams are scheduled to be ready sometime in the fall of 2011. In the summer of 2008, changes were made with the addition of chairback seating on the lower level of the coliseum. Approximately 650 chairback seats were installed along the sidelines of the court. New composite retractable bleachers were installed on both ends of the court. The chairback seats and new bleachers replace the old wooden bleachers that encompassed the entire lower level. Prior to the start of the 2006-07 season, the wood playing floor was resurfaced to reflect the Tigers’ affiliation with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. A new Tiger logo is located in the circle at half-court. The conference letters “MIAA” are located in the lanes just inside the free-throw lines on each end of the basketball court. The word “Tigers” is located on each baseline of the basketball court. Fort Hays State University and the NCAA logo are also on the court along each sideline. Prior to the start of the 1996-97 season several changes were made to GMC. The major renovation was the installation of a new permanent wood floor. Other additions included the construction of new locker rooms and the remodelling of two existing locker rooms. The sound system was upgraded with the addition of 16 speakers and a new sound board which allows for programming of music, messages and sound effects. Prior to the 1997-98 season two new message boards were installed. M.C. Cunningham Hall is part of the total Health, Physical Education and Recreation/ Athletic complex at Fort Hays State. Cunningham Hall houses HHP offices, classrooms, a swimming pool, four full-sized gymnasiums, eight handball/racquetball courts, a weight room, two dance studios, and a wrestling room. Gross Memorial Coliseum is a multipurpose facility. It is also home to the KSHSAA 1A State Basketball Tournament, the KSHSAA 3-2-1A State Wrestling Championships, and the KSHSAA 1A State Volleyball Championships. The coliseum houses the FHSU Athletic Department, a large athletic training room, locker rooms, concession stands, a press box and the Field Weight Room which features full nautilus equipment and free weights.

FORT HAYS STATE ATHLETIC FACILITIES

LEWIS FIELD STADIUM is the 6,362-seat home of the Tiger football team and track and field teams. The stadium was constructed in 1936 on what was formerly the Golden Belt Fairgrounds, and was named in honor of William Alexander Lewis, president of Fort Hays State University from 1913 to 1933. The native limestone structure was refurbished to its former glory in 1993 when 57 years of weathering was sandblasted away. The Poligras artificial surface installed in 2003, which plays similar to natural grass, replaced the old STADIA-Turf, which had been in use since 1993. Prior to the start of the 1996 season, seating was replaced throughout the stadium. The seating includes 1,000 chairback seats on the west side and new bench seating in the remainder of the stadium. A new Tiger locker room, coach offices, and player meeting rooms were completed in the summer of 2006 on the east side of the stadium. The new locker room has carpet flooring and individual lockers for 90 players. Offices and meeting rooms are located upstairs on the east side of the stadium. The 8-lane rubber and polyurethane Alex Francis track, named to honor the former Tiger track & field coach, was refurbished with a new red surface in 2003. The majority of field events are conducted outside the north wall.

FORT HAYS STATE ATHLETIC FACILITIES

FORT HAYS STATE Larks Park

Tiger Stadium

LARKS PARK is the home of the Fort Hays State baseball team. The park is owned by the city of Hays, but operated by the FHSU athletic department. Larks Park was built in 1940 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. It is the oldest baseball park in the state of Kansas. Larks Park is located at Fourth and Main in Hays. The park features a limestone frame with restrooms, concession facilities and seating for 1,200 Tiger fans, although a record 1,868 turned out on April 8, 2005, to watch FHSU play Mesa State College. The park has seen several improvements over the past few years. New fencing and a new scoreboard were installed in 2008. The infield playing surface was replaced during the summer of 2003. The poligras infield was necessary due to the numerous games that are played in the park each year. The poligras turf is the same surface that was installed at Lewis Field Stadium for football. Bluegrass sod was laid in the infield just alongside the turf. The outfield has been leveled and reseeded. New lights were installed in March of 2000, which allows the Tigers to play additional night games. Park dimensions are 322 down the left field line and 319 to right, 349 in the power alleys and 405 to center field.

TIGER STADIUM is home to the Fort Hays State University softball team. Groundbreaking for the stadium occurred in January of 1998 and was ready for action by February of 1999. The stadium’s official dedication came on April 15, 1999, at a home game versus Mesa State College. Tiger Stadium is on the south side of Gross Memorial Coliseum/ Cunningham Hall. The park features concession facilities and seating for 500 fans. Park dimensions are 200 feet down the left and right field lines, 210 feet to the power alleys and 220 feet to center field. A wooden outfield fence standing eight feet tall was built prior to the 2011 season to replace the chainlink fence that stood their previously. Upgrades to the park were made before the 2007 season with the installation of a new Oklahoma red clay infield surface. The surface is excellent for the Kansas wind and has a high moisture content ratio, providing the ability to withstand spring storms, particularly in the absence of field tarp. Drought resistent fescue grass is the surface in the outfield and foul territory. In 2008, a new scoreboard with LED lighting was installed beyond the outfield wall. The park has featured a net-style backstop since 2007. Behind the center field portion of the fence sits three flagpoles which hold the American, State of Kansas and FHSU flags. The chainlink fencing alongside foul territory contains billboards of Tiger supporters.

FHSU Soccer Stadium at Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex The FHSU SOCCER STADIUM will open for play in the fall of 2011, the inaugural season of Fort Hays State men’s and women’s soccer. The Tigers home stadium is part of the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex which also features eight baseball/softball fields and eight football/soccer fields. The stadium is a state of the art soccer-specific complex with a synthetic turf playing surface and lighting that meets NCAA regulations for holding night contests. Other features include a Daktronics scoreboard with LED lighting just beyond the south end of the playing field, bleachers seating 500-plus fans, and a two-level press box. The stadium also has both men’s and women’s locker rooms and a concessions area. This brand new facility sits on 120 acres of ground and is located just northwest of Gross Memorial Coliseum on the western edge of Hays at the intersection of Old Highway 40 and the Highway 183 bypass.

FHSU Tennis Courts

The FHSU TENNIS COURTS are home to the Lady Tiger tennis team. Six courts are available for both tournament and dual match contests. The courts were completed in 1994 on the south side of the Gross Memorial Coliseum/Cunningham Hall Complex.
