2012 SWOSU SOCCER (20-1-1)

Entering the 2012 season, Head Coach Mark Persson’s SWOSU Soccer program had never won more than seven games in any season, been ranked in the top 25, reached the NCAA Division II Tournament or had a player garner All-American honors. Fast forward one year and Persson and the Lady Bulldogs checked those accomplishments and more – including Great American Conference regular season and conference tournament championships – off their to-do list. Now SWOSU has cemented themselves atop the GAC and they enter 2013 as the unanimous choice to repeat as the conference champions. SWOSU rattled off 15 consecutive wins to open the season and claimed the Great American Conference championship, the first soccer title in SWOSU history, with a 9-0-1 record. As a result, Weatherford was the host of the second-annual GAC Tournament and SWOSU used the home field advantage to defeat Ouachita Baptist 2-1 in the championship game.. The undefeated GAC champs were rewarded with a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Division II Central Regional and a trip to Warrensburg, Mo., where they defeated Minot State 3-0 in the school’s firstever NCAA Tournament appearance. The ride, however, was halted two days later by tournamenthost Central Missouri by a score of 3-0. SWOSU’s 2012 season ended with a 20-11 record, the 20 wins just one of several records the squad set. Almost every single-season team record in SWOSU history was broken last season, including goals (60), assists (46), shots attempted (363), shots on goal (212) and goals against

average (0.59). In addition, SWOSU swept the GAC specialty awards which included: Josie Price, Offensive Player of the Year Kira Bertrand, Defender of the Year Corey LaMoureaux, Goalkeeper of the Year Ashlee Beitinger, Freshman of the Year Mark Persson, Coach of the Year Six Lady Bulldogs earned First Team All-GAC honors, three – Bertrand, Price & LaMoureaux – were named to the NSCAA All-Central Region Team and Price became the first All-American in program history. Price led the Great American Conference in points and assists and graduated as SWOSU’s all-time leader in points, assists and shots on goal. LaMoureaux, SWOSU’s other senior starter, graduated with the lowest goals against average (0.88) and most shutouts (16) in school history.

2013 SWOSU SOCCER FACT BOOK

HEAD COACH MARK PERSSON The coach who built winning soccer programs at three different Oklahoma colleges is now doing the very same thing at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Mark Persson, entering his fifth season at SWOSU in 2013, has orchestrated an amazing turnaround in the SWOSU women’s soccer program since taking over in 2009. He holds a record of 40-31-6 at SWOSU and he has twice been recognized as a conference coach of the year, most recently claiming the Great American Conference’s honor in 2012. His 2012 squad became the first in school history to advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament, where they defeated Minot State 3-0 before falling to host Central Missouri by the same score in the second round of the Central Regional. The Bulldogs were the only team in NCAA Division II to complete the regular season without a loss, ending the season with a record of 20-1-1. For their efforts in 2012, the Bulldogs received several postseason awards including a very impressive sweep of the Great American Conference specialty awards: Josie Price was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Kira Bertrand won Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, Corey LaMoureaux was the Goalkeeper of the Year and Ashlee Beitinger earned Freshman of the Year. Persson completed the sweep with his Coach of the Year Award. In total, SWOSU had eight players earn All-GAC honors in 2012, bringing the two-year total to 17 (10 first team, five second team, two honorable THE PERSSON FILE mention).
