2015 SWOSU VOLLEYBALL FACT BOOK

SEASON PREVIEW After losing six seniors off a team that finished in a tie for eighth place in the Great American Conference last season, fourth-year SWOSU Volleyball coach Josh Collins added nine newcomers to his roster for the upcoming 2015 season, giving his team a unique blend of youth and experience mixed with talent and potential. “Losing those six seniors is obviously going to hurt,” Collins said. “They brought us a long way in terms of team chemistry and they were all great students who paved the way for how SWOSU Volleyball does things. We’re really happy with our recruiting class, we feel like we’re bringing in a lot of players who can contribute immediately and we’re bringing in student-athletes who understand what it means to be a team.” Among the newcomers are four freshman, one sophomore transfer and three junior transfers who will join a core group of returners that includes just five players, and one lone senior in Kaila Lancaster (Hewitt, Texas). Lancaster has been with the SWOSU Volleyball program for four years, already leaving her mark on the record books as she enters the season as the Bulldogs’ career leader in digs (1,288), but now she must assume a new role, team leader. “I think Kaila has been preparing for this role as long as she’s been here,” Collins said. “We didn’t have to teach her to love SWOSU blue, it’s been engrained in her since she was young. She understood she was playing for more than herself and she won the position at libero early in her career and she has held on to it ever since. She’s so coachable and she would run through a brick wall if you asked her to, and those are the kind of kids we want in our program.” OUTSIDE HITTERS One luxury for Coach Collins heading into the 2015 season is the return of two-time All-Great American Conference selection Carly Zak (Wylie, Texas) on the outside. Zak followed up her GAC Freshman of the Year campaign from 2013 with another standout season as a sophomore, being named an honorable mention All-GAC selection after leading the Bulldogs with 315 kills and a .213 hitting percentage. In just two seasons, Zak has already climbed to third in career kills (711) at SWOSU with two top-ten single season marks for school history and she is hitting .201 for her career with already more than 2,000 attack attempts to her credit. Joining Zak at the outside positions is a trio of freshman looking to make an impact early in their careers. Blair Dressendorfer (Owasso, Okla.) was an allconference and Oklahoma Coaches Association (OCA) All-State selection as a senior at Owasso HS, while Jill Green (Liberty Hill, Texas) comes to SWOSU as a Texas Class 4A All-State selection after a state semifinal appearance with Liberty Hill HS last fall. MIDDLE HITTERS While SWOSU lost both starting middle hitters from last season, Collins has four players expected to battle for time at the position this fall. DeLayni Fine (Reno, Nev.) is the lone returner at the position after seeing time in eight matches as a freshman with 12 kills and 10 blocks to her credit. She will be joined by two junior transfers in Paige Holt (Granbury, Texas) and Kelsi Schmidtberger (Houston, Texas) along with freshman Addie Aman (Tacoma, Wash.). Holt played

SEASON PREVIEW two seasons at fellow NCAA Division II institution Cameron, gaining experience in 45 matches as a middle hitter with 156 kills and 61 blocks last season for the Aggies. Schmidtberger was a two-year standout at Navarro College, where she earned First Team All-Region XIV honors after leading the zone with 123 blocks and hitting .381 last fall. Aman was out of action in 2014 but comes to SWOSU after a standout four-year high school career that included all-city, all-region, allconference and all-state honors while playing at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond. SETTERS One position where SWOSU will have newcomers exclusively competing for action is at setter with junior transfer Kayla Hebert (McKinney, Texas) and freshman Kodee Avery (Santa Clara, Utah) joining the Bulldogs this fall. Hebert will have the upper hand in experience after two years at Cameron and 1,488 career assists and 663 career digs already to her credit. She was also named to the 2014 Lone Star Conference All-Tournament team and chosen as the LSC Setter of the Week once last year. Avery comes to SWOSU with a winning pedigree following a standout career at Snow Canyon HS, where she led her team to a Class 3A State Championship last season and earned all-state, all-region and all-area honors. DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS Kaila Lancaster leads a group of four who will compete for time in the defensive positions. Lancaster has held down the libero position for three seasons and led the Bulldogs in digs in each of her first three years at SWOSU, en route to becoming the program’s all-time leader in digs midway through last season. Ariana Olson is back for her junior season after ranking fifth on the team with 157 digs last season while seeing action in 27 matches for the Bulldogs in 2014. Another returner is redshirt freshman Klemson Lancaster (Hewitt, Texas), the younger sister of Kaila, who redshirted during her first year at SWOSU after a stellar four-year prep career at Reicher Catholic HS. The lone newcomer in the defensive positions is Lindsey McCauley, a sophomore who spent her freshman season at Cameron, where she appeared in 26 matches and ranked third on the team with 298 digs.

HEAD COACH JOSH COLLINS Josh Collins became the second head volleyball coach in SWOSU Volleyball history on January 1, 2012 and he enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Bulldogs in 2015. Additionally, Collins added the duties of Director of Gameday Operations in the fall of 2014. His 2014 team finished 8-19 overall and tied for eighth place in the Great American Conference standings, advancing to the GAC Tournament for the third consecutive season. His squad ranked among the league leaders in both digs and blocks, setting a new school record by averaging better than 2.0 blocks per set. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Carly Zak, a second team allconference selection for the second straight season. Collins has tutored six players who have earned All-Great American Conference honors in his first three seasons, including middle hitter Alison Cole, who became just the second First Team All-Conference player in the history of SWOSU Volleyball in 2013. That same year, Carly Zak added another first for the program after being named the GAC Freshman of the Year following a stellar first year with the Bulldogs. Zak and Joey Collins both earned second team all-conference honors, giving SWOSU three honorees on an all-conference team for only the second time in school history. The Bulldogs finished tied for fourth in the GAC standings in 2013 with an 8-6 conference mark and they completed their season with 13 victories for the second straight season, matching the secondWWW.SWOSUATHLETICS.COM

HEAD COACH JOSH COLLINS highest win total in program history. In addition, some of their numbers stack up against the best in SWOSU history, including the most single-season blocks (249) and the second-most kills (1,525), attack percentage (.170), assists (1,429) and digs (2,037). His first team faced a daunting non-conference schedule before coming together in Great American Conference play. The Bulldogs had an overall four-win improvement from 2011, finishing 13-19 with a fourth-place finish in the GAC at 10-4. SWOSU finished ahead of the other four Oklahoma-based schools in the conference standings by at least two games. At the GAC Tournament, SWOSU defeated Ouachita Baptist in the quarterfinals, earning the first postseason victory in program history. In the semifinals, SWOSU went toe-to-toe with conference champion and tournament-host Harding, taking the Lady Bisons to five sets before succumbing 15-11. Collins mentored two players – Alison Cole and Lindsay Dusin – who earned all-conference honors in 2012. Cole was a second team selection at middle hitter while Dusin was honorable mention as a setter. Dusin was also named to the GAC All-Tournament team. While 2012 was his first season as the head volleyball coach, Collins is certainly no newcomer to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He arrived in Weatherford in 2004 from Clarendon College and he served as an assistant men’s basketball coach under Scott Reed in 2004-05 and later with current athletic director and former basketball coach Todd Thurman during the 2006-07 season. Starting in 2005, Collins worked as a dual assistant for SWOSU, assisting with basketball while also helping Pagliasotti start the volleyball program. He served as an assistant volleyball coach for seven seasons before taking over prior to the 2012 season. Collins, a native of Hedley, Texas, holds two degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2006 before completing his master’s degree in Sports Management in 2008. He and his wife, Jamie, were married in June 2012 and reside in Weatherford.

CHRISTINA DARRAS Graduate Assistant Christina Darras enters her second season as a member of the SWOSU Volleyball coaching staff in 2015 following a two-year playing career for the Bulldogs. In her first year on the coaching staff, Darras assisted with a Bulldog squad that finished eighth in the Great American Conference standings and advanced to the conference tournament for a third straight season. Statistically, SWOSU ranked among the league leaders in both digs and blocks, becoming the first team in program history to average better than 2.0 blocks per set. Darras appeared in 59 matches for the Bulldogs from 2012-13 after beginning her career at Scottsdale Community College in her native Arizona. While playing primarily as a rightside hitter, Darras put down 316 kills in 194 sets of action and she ranks in the top ten in both career assist and total blocks at SWOSU. Prior to transferring to SWOSU, Darras was a two-time All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) and All-Region selection at Scottsdale CC. She was named the ACCAC Player of the Week during her sophomore season and she earned the “Excellence Under the Stars Achievement Award” at the conclusion of her career. As a prep, Darras was a two-time all-region selection at Gilbert HS. A native of Gilbert, Ariz., Darras completed her bachelor’s degree in Marketing at SWOSU in 2015 before beginning work on a master’s degree in Sports Management.

CAITLIN OGLETREE Graduate Assistant Caitlin Ogletree is the newest member of the SWOSU Volleyball coaching staff, having joined the staff as a graduate assistant prior to the 2015 season. Ogletree came to SWOSU following a standout four-year playing career that saw her split time between the University of Houston and the University of Cincinnati. As a freshman, she was a four-time Conference USA Setter of the Week and named to the C-USA AllFreshman team after leading Houston in assists and aces while ranking second on the team in digs. She then made four starts for the Cougars as a sophomore in 2012 before transferring to Cincinnati. After sitting out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer regulations, Ogletree had the opportunity to try out for the USA Women’s National Team in the summer of 2014 before returning to the court that fall for Cincinnati. She led the Bearcats with 614 assists and a 7.14 assist/set ratio in her redshirt-junior season, but her playing career was cut short following the season when she had shoulder surgery. Ogletree was a four-year standout at Montgomery HS, where she was a two-time all-state selection, four-time District Setter of the Year and four-time academic all-district honoree. A native of Montgomery, Texas, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Cincinnati in 2015 and she is now working towards a master’s degree in Sports Management from SWOSU.

PIONEER CELLULAR EVENT CENTER The Pioneer Cellular Event Center is a state of the art, 93,000 square-foot event center located in the heart of Weatherford, Oklahoma that has served as the home of SWOSU Volleyball since the beginning of the 2014 season. SWOSU played their first game in their new home venue on September 10, 2014, defeating St. Gregory’s in three sets. In addition to serving as the home court of the Bulldogs, SWOSU Volleyball also is housed with their locker room and coaches’ offices inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. The new facility was built adjacent to ASAP Energy Field, allowing it to provide additional suite and bathroom facilities during home SWOSU football games. The pride and joy of the facility is the top floor VIP suite, which overlooks both the football field and the arena. It is used to entertain donors, hold meetings and serves as a multifunctional suite for gameday and events. The facility has new locker rooms, coaches’ offices, the Legacy Bank Media Room, the Dr. Michael E. Kiehn Athletic Training Facility and a number of multifunctional rooms that can be used for athletics matches, as well as university and community events. The newest feature of the building is a brand new SWOSU Athletics Hall of Fame kiosk, located on the north side of the concourse on the main floor. The event center project was initiated by the City of Weatherford’s “Vision 2020” strategic planning process and made possible by the “Yes! Weatherford” sales tax campaign, SWOSU students and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. The project broke ground in December 2011 and opened its doors for business in January 2014. The Pioneer Cellular Event Center has a seating capacity in the arena of around 4,000.

2015 SWOSU VOLLEYBALL FACT BOOK

GREAT AMERICAN CONFERENCE The Great American Conference is one of the newest in NCAA Division II, first taking the field in the fall of 2011. Entering its fourth year of competition, the GAC continues to establish itself on the field of play against the very tough Central Region/Super Region 3. The NCAA announced on March 9, 2011 that the Great American Conference was officially accepted as the 23rd NCAA Division II athletics conference. Although the new league was new, it was a concept that had been informally discussed since the early 1990’s between institutions from Arkansas and Oklahoma. Nine charter members (Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas and Southwestern Oklahoma State) agreed to form a new NCAA Division II athletic conference in July 2010 and notified their respective leagues of the decision. In November of 2010, the league was stamped as the Great American Conference and announced in March of 2011 that it would become the 23rd active member conference in NCAA Division II. Will Prewitt, previously an associate commissioner of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), was selected as the first GAC Commissioner and appointed to his post one month before the league had officially been named. He is joined on staff by Associate Commisioner for Compliance Audra Tope, Assistant Commissioner for Communications Eric Moyer and Assistant Commissioner for Operations Stephanie Prewitt. The nine founding members began active membership within the NCAA Division II ranks on September 1, 2011. Earlier that summer, Southern Nazarene was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and they were extended a provisional invitation to join the GAC. Northwestern Oklahoma State also received a provisional invitation after being accepted into the process in the summer of 2012. Southern Nazarene becomes an active championship member of the GAC for the 2014-15 season while Northwestern Oklahoma State will do the same the following year.
