dubai The history of golf in

A thriving golf destination boasting some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments has risen equally as dramatically as the city around it

S

pringing from the Arabian desert like one of those high-speed time-lapse sequences that you see on the Discovery channel, Dubai has been transformed from a sleepy fishing village to a buzzing metropolis in a little under four decades. It is a fascinating fusion of east and west; of glitz, glamour, traditional arabian hospitality and the thriving cultural offering of the Middle East. And just as this cosmopolitan society has been shaped almost from scratch, so too has the golf. Home to 11 outstanding golf courses and two of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments, not to mention a host of other significant events, Dubai is a golfing success story that resonates the world over. It is the ultimate blank canvas project, where the world’s brightest design talents and most ambitious developers have converged to produce an exciting, eclectic destination that ticks every conceivable box for the discerning travelling golfer.

how golf became a tourism pillar

It all began as recently as 1988, when the Majlis at Emirates Golf Club became the first ever grass course in the Middle East. There is an aerial shot of the club taken by renowned golf photographer David Cannon that brilliantly illustrates the bizarre setting, a postage stamp oasis framed by an arid landscape and nothing but a flat expanse of sand for miles around. Nobody could have predicted at that point that in 2014 Dubai would celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Dubai Desert Classic, a tournament that is emblematic of Dubai's stature as a premier golf destination. Before Emirates GC, expat golfers played on sand courses featuring putting ‘browns’, many of which still retain a small band of hardcore enthusiasts today. On days when dusty shamal winds blew in from the desert, there are tales of holes shifting 20 yards overnight, and of golfers taking the wrong sand track

home and ending up in another emirate. Even stray camels would occasionally obstruct a player’s chosen line of shot. Sand golf aside, the roots of a golfing empire originate on the Majlis course. Slowly at first, but then with gathering pace, courses began to spring up across the emirate. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, a property boom unlike anything ever witnessed before would drive the construction of residential communities underpinned by a signature course, with the Address Montgomerie, Arabian Ranches and Al Badia Golf Clubs preceding developments at Dubai Sports City and Jumeirah Golf Estates. The term ‘championship’ course is often overused, but nowhere is it more apt than in Dubai. Increasingly the emirate has legitimacy as a must-tick box on the diehard golfer’s bucket list. It has trophy courses that are talked about the world over. It has guaranteed perfect weather from September through until May. And the tourism offering that makes Dubai unique. As well as the high profile events that have helped bring fame and celebrity to the fairways of the emirate, increasingly there is a shift towards growing the game at a grass roots level. Golf in DUBAi, who have done so much to raise the city’s profile through the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Ladies Masters, launched the MENA Golf Tour in 2011, a developmental circuit that would give young amateurs and aspiring professionals a chance to compete at a level previously only found in Asia and Europe. Offering slots in the Desert Classic to the highest finishers on its order of merit, the tour has grown in stature over the past two years and now attracts strong international fields. Ahmed Al Musharekkh became the first Emirati to turn professional in 2012, and with the MENA Tour now established and adding events to the calendar each year, the prospects for future generations of local players are increasingly bright.

history of golf

Omega Dubai Desert Classic 1989-Present Held in the first week of February

Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2006-Present Held in the first week of December

DP World Tour Championship 2009-Present Held in midNovember

It’s fair to say that golf in the UAE would never have taken off were it not for the arrival of the Dubai Desert Classic. With the European Tour seeking to prolong its season by expanding to warmer climes, the inaugural tournament in 1989 marked the first time a European Tour event had been held anywhere outside the continent. And the surreal location wasted no time in capturing the imagination. When the great Seve Ballesteros swashbuckled his way to victory in 1992, golf and Dubai were worldwide news. And it wasn’t long before February at the Emirates Golf Club was a favourite hunting ground for some of the biggest names in the sport. Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Fred Couples all played, before the all-conquering Tiger Woods made his debut in 2001. Woods didn’t win that year (remarkably) but he did pose for photos smashing balls into the Arabian Gulf from the helipad of the Burj Al Arab Hotel – an image that was used around the world. Woods eventually got his first victory in a playoff over Ernie Els in 2006, following that with another memorable win two years later. The Desert Classic and the Majlis course at Emirates Golf Club, its home for all bar two of the events, has become

synonymous with compelling leaderboards and dramatic finishes. With its final few holes offering the possibilities of major swings in momentum, the last 10 tournaments have all come down to the wire, thrilling the many spectators who make this early February event a flagship date on Dubai’s sporting calendar. Rory McIlroy would announce himself to the world when he won as 19-year-old in 2009, leading from start to finish and drawing comparisons with a young Tiger. Ernie Els has the most victories with three, but incredibly no player has ever retained the famous trophy. In recent years, Spain have enjoyed a period of dominance with Miguel Angel Jimenez, Alvaro Quiros and Rafael Cabrera-Bello each winning the title between 2010-12, with that spell of success broken by Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher, who fired a third round 62 en route to victory this year. The 2014 Omega Dubai Desert Classic marks the 25th anniversary of this incredible event, and will welcome the best field in its history with many of the past champions, including Woods, Els and McIlroy all confirmed to play.

Not content with staging two of the most prestigious men’s tournaments on the European Tour, Dubai won the rights to host the season finale for its ladies counterpart in 2006. Sharing the Majlis course venue with the Desert Classic, organisers golf in DUBAi once again proved adept at staging an exciting tournament and bringing top players to the emirate. It was the greatest of them all, Annika Sorenstam, who would get the Ladies Masters off to the perfect start with an impressive victory seven years ago. The Swedish winner of 10 majors and 93 tournaments worldwide returned to defend her title in 2007 and even chose

Dubai as the stage to bring the curtain down on her incredible career 12 months later. With subsequent victories for Anja Monke, In Kyung Kim and Iben Tinning, Dubai further enhanced its reputation for launching the careers of exciting young talents when teenager Lexi Thompson stormed to victory in 2011, followed equally impressively by Chinese star Shanshan Feng 12 months ago. And just like its men's counterpart, the field for the tournament continues to grow in strength. World No.3 Stacey Lewis is the latest household name to make her debut, while Europe's 2013 Solheim success further enhances the stature.

European Tour events bring enormous publicity and prestige to their host venues, but Dubai took things to a whole new level when a brand new tournament was announced in 2007. Not only would Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth course host the season-ending tour championship in the last week of November, but the emirate would be a focal point for an entire season with the newly conceived ‘Race to Dubai’ order of merit format. One of the most significant events on the European Tour outside the majors and the World Golf Championships, a lucrative bonus pool was drawn up to further reward the top 15 players on the season-ending money list. It was a startlingly ambitious project that required a venue to match. That honour fell to Greg Norman’s Earth course, a sprawling parkland layout stretching over 7,700 yards from the back tees and featuring a finishing stretch tailor made for excitement and theatre. With an island 17th green par 3 and an uphill par 5 finisher bisected by a winding creek, the stage was set for the best 60 players in Europe to do battle over four days with no cut.

England’s Lee Westwood played flawless golf in 2009 to win the inaugural tournament with an incredible score of 23 under par. He would reach the coveted position of World No.1 a year later, but it was Swede Robert Karlsson who prevailed in 2010 after a fabulous battle with the tenacious Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter. Alvaro Quiros blasted his way to victory courtesy of a blockbuster eagle finish in 2011 in a year where Luke Donald made history as the first player to win both PGA Tour and European money lists. Meanwhile last year belonged to Rory McIlroy, who followed up his triumph at the PGA Championship and back-to-back FedEx Cup playoff wins with a 5-birdie barrage to seize the championship (and the Race to Dubai) from England’s Justin Rose. In just four editions, the DP World Tour Championship has accumulated some fine history and memorable moments. Its policy to allow spectators to attend free of charge has paid dividends, with impressive crowds making the journey to Jumeirah Golf Estates every November. What it lacks in heritage, the tournament is making up for in season-ending excitement.

The Majlis & Faldo, Emirates Golf Club It began life as the ‘Desert Miracle’ in 1988, but Emirates Golf Club is more of a city slicker these days. At the centre of it all is the Majlis course

A

Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Lee Westwood, among many others, have all singled out the course for praise, with its wonderful blend of risk and reward holes

s the first grass course in the region and the host venue for all bar two of the 24 Desert Classic tournaments that have helped to shape Dubai’s profile as a global golfing powerhouse, the Majlis is one of the most prestigious and significant golf courses in the Middle East. It was the catalyst that sparked a breathless and extravagant period of golfing development that imported the skills of the very top signature designers, yet the Majlis is still regarded as the region’s No.1. This status is endorsed every year by the best golfers in the world at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Lee Westwood, among many others, have all singled out the course for praise, with its wonderful blend of risk and reward holes, vivid shades of green contrasting dramatically with the surrounding sandy scrub and set against Dubai’s spectacular Marina backdrop. It is no coincidence that the last 10 finishes in February’s flagship European Tour event have all come down to the wire. Like the famous Masters venue Augusta National, the Majlis is renowned for back nine fireworks and dramatic swings in fortune. The famous par 5 18th perhaps encapsulates this tightrope act best of all, tempting golfers to go for the risky shots that can lead to a birdie or an eagle, but punishing those who take on too much. The Majlis has opted for refinement rather than drastic overhauls over the course of its 25-year history, whether subtle changes to the bunkering, the addition of new tee boxes or improvements to the irrigation system that sustains its immaculate winter condition. But by and large, it is the same golf course today as the one that stood out so starkly in the arid desert of 1988. For a game that treasures history and tradition like no other, it is this sense of continuity that makes the Majlis course unique. Stretching around the outskirts of Emirates Golf Club's spacious property is the Faldo course. Originally known as The Wadi, British great Nick Faldo was tasked with a redesign that was completed in 2006. The only fully floodlit 18-hole course in the city, the Faldo has become a popular venue for night golf and offers visitors an enjoyable alternative to its more prestigious sister course. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club Dubai Creek is situated in the heart of the city and commands a special place in the hearts of tourists and resident golfers alike

A With a manmade jetty providing a thrilling tee shot from the sixth, excitement comes thick and fast on both nines

thriving community of active members and a stunning clubhouse are just two of the features that have brought global fame to Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. But above all else, this fun and enchanting course, situated right on the historic Dubai Creek, is known for its brilliant finishing stretch. By almost unanimous reckoning, the Creek’s 17th and 18th holes (both par 4s) are the most impressive, not to mention challenging, in the entire region. Running right up against the bank of the Creek, they have been inspiring golfers and breaking hearts in equal measure for 20 years. The Creek is five years younger than its sister course at Emirates Golf Club, The Majlis (both are operated by Dubai Golf), but the club’s place on the historical pedestal is only marginally less significant. Given its proximity to the bustling stretch of water that separates the old part of Dubai from the new, passing by landmarks like Deira City Centre and the spectacular Park Hyatt Hotel, the Creek is high on the must-play list for every golfer who visits the emirate. The Creek is the antidote for modern monstrous courses that measure upwards of 7,500 yards. At under 7,000 yards from the back tees it is not the longest course in Dubai (but still had enough to test Europe's best in two Dubai Desert Classics) and what it lacks in length, the Thomas Bjorn redesign more than makes up for in trickery. Water is the predominant hazard on many of the more interesting holes, with par 4s like two and six featuring both tee shots and approaches where the threat of an ill-timed splash is a constant danger. Two of the Creek’s four par 3s play across water, while the fifth hole, a deceptively difficult 1-shotter, backs onto the shore of the biggest water hazard of all. With a manmade jetty providing a thrilling tee shot from the sixth, excitement comes thick and fast on both nines. But the nothing can prepare you for the grandstand finish, where amazing panoramic views of Dubai are a worthy consolation to a pair of holes that can often do serious damage to a scorecard. Jebel Ali Golf Resort Dubai’s very own version of a ‘Hidden Gem’ is a beautiful 9-holer set in the grounds of one of its oldest hotel resorts

D There is a wonderful sense of seclusion here, with the rich variety of trees, shrubs, strutting peacocks and chorus of songbirds creating the impression that this could be some exotic secret garden

esigned by local favourite Peter Harradine, the course at Jebel Ali Golf Resort offers something very different to its neighbouring Dubai venues. There is a wonderful sense of seclusion here, with the rich variety of trees, shrubs, strutting peacocks and chorus of songbirds creating the impression that this could be some exotic secret garden. The desert is the last thing on your mind when you visit Jebel Ali, tucked away some 10 minutes' drive from the Dubai Marina. At 15 years old, this is the third oldest course behind only The Majlis and Dubai Creek. Nine-hole tracks often don’t receive the same level of recognition as their 18-hole counterparts, but Harradine produced a wonderful design that is cited by many local players as one of their favourites. Beginning and ending with a par 5, it is an unusually tight layout by Dubai standards, placing a premium on accurate tee shots and measured approaches. The greens typically run fast, and while the holes are not long, they can be tricky when the breeze is up. The resort itself enjoys an iconic status. Tiger Woods has stayed here on several occasions when competing in the Desert Classic, and many ceremonial Challenge Matches have been staged here on the Tuesday preceding the start of the tournament. Golfing greats like Seve Ballesteros, Colin Montgomerie, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Mark O’Meara have all gone head-to-head on a golf course that should never be underestimated, despite its beguiling looks and modest yardage. Many who play here will attempt to drive the 282-yard par 4 fifth, but as with much of this course, first impressions can be very deceptive. Like many great courses around the world, it is often the shortest holes at Jebel Ali that will leave you feeling foolish. For enquiries golf.teetimes@jaresorts.com

Al Badia Golf Club by InterContinental An imposing clubhouse and a sophisticated Robert Trent Jones II design ensure the stature of this Festival City course continues to grow

P

Featuring a truly spectacular clubhouse, which marries daring, modern architecture with all the traditional home comforts that golfers enjoy, Al Badia’s star is rising

lay safe or go for broke? It is the question posed time and time again on the intelligent Al Badia course. Designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones II, Al Badia opened in 2005. Jones has a deep understanding of how a round of golf should flow, as evident in his stunning work at the Dubai Festival City course. A straightforward first hole helps a golfer ease into the round, but things get challenging shortly thereafter. The first, real threat arrives on the 2nd tee, where you must decide how much of the water you want to attempt to carry to set up your approach shot. The 3rd hole, recently rated by Golf Digest magazine as the most challenging par 3 in the UAE, along with the long par 5 5th, played across water and into the wind, have been a graveyard for many promising scores. If you can weather this storm, scoring opportunities present themselves on the reachable par 5 8th, the friendly 10th and the short par 3 11th. At Al Badia, you have to capitalise on your scoring chances when they come along, and keep your head above water on the more treacherous sections of the course. Possessing a strategic game plan entering your round isn’t a bad idea. Featuring a truly spectacular clubhouse, which marries daring, modern architecture with all the traditional home comforts that golfers enjoy, Al Badia’s star is rising. Having staged a MENA Tour event every year since 2011, it was recently awarded host venue for the Grand Final of the European Challenge Tour, a tournament that took place in late October. The course’s paspallum grass playing surfaces are a little slower than some of its neighbours, which must surely be a factor in some of the low scoring seen in professional tournaments over the last few years. Most amateurs, on the other hand, will tell you that Al Badia Golf Club is a very exacting test indeed. For enquiries anna.kandaryan@ihg.com

Arabian Ranches Golf Club The fifth golf course to open in Dubai, Arabian Ranches will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this coming February

T Surrounded by one of Dubai’s more established residential communities, the firm, fast playing surfaces complement a course with more than its fair share of fun holes

he desert course at Arabian Ranches has been something of a chameleon in the decade since it opened in 2004, but the character of the club itself and the members who form such a tight-knit community, have been one of the mainstays of golf in the emirate. Most golf clubs in the region have eschewed the concept of a traditional members’ club for one that serves all segments of the market, but the unique camaraderie found at the Ranches perhaps places it closest to this cherished model. The layout, designed by former Open champion Ian Baker-Finch in association with Jack Nicklaus Design, has assumed several guises. Originally known as a very challenging test despite lacking any prominent water hazards, the course has progressively been made more playable as it moves nearer to a purer desert character. While this has dimmed the notoriety of its fearsome ‘Black Tee Challenge’ (an annual event that stretches the track in excess of 7,600 yards), regulars at the club have managed to considerably reduce their lost ball count. As recently as February this year, work took place to clear hundreds of tonnes of trees and vegetation to produce a more open, cleaner look. This has improved the aesthetics of the course and also made it much easier for amateurs to locate errant tee shots. Gone are the gnarly bushes that lay just off the fairway and would often gobble up shots that were only fractionally off-line. The modern Arabian Ranches is a straightforward test that can still be challenging but prioritises a word dear to every golfer’s heart: fairness. Surrounded by one of Dubai’s more established residential communities, the firm, fast playing surfaces complement a course with more than its fair share of fun holes. From a variety of quirky doglegs, like the fourth and 10th holes, to the driveable par 4 15th, scoring opportunities are well balanced against the threat of a big number should a golfer get too greedy. Earth Course, Jumeirah Golf Estates The host venue for the European Tour’s flagship finale is one of the rising stars not just in Dubai, but in the world of golf

W

Unveiled when Englishman Lee Westwood stormed to victory in November 2009, Earth is unlike any other course in the Middle East

ith several notable exceptions, the greatest golf courses in the world are known for hosting prestigious tournaments. Few, however, have done so in the same week as they opened for play. As entrances go, the launch of the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates was unprecedented. From a Greg Norman design that was originally conceived as a resort course that would serve the plush new community that surrounds it, an ambitious partnership with the European Tour was forged that placed Dubai as the focal point for an entire calendar that spanned more than 50 events in over 25 countries. Earth is the course where the curtain comes down on the European Tour season. Its striking design, coupled with a dramatic finishing stretch of holes considered perfect to host the big-money DP World Tour Championship, have embellished a reputation that belies its youthful status on tour. Unveiled when Englishman Lee Westwood stormed to victory in November 2009, Earth is unlike any other course in the Middle East. Framed by a carpet of reddish woodchip, Mackenzie-style white sand bunkers pop up against the undulating Bermuda grass playing surfaces. Although the use of several central fairway bunkers and uphill blind approach shots has been questioned by some of the top pros who compete for the riches of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai moneylist, what cannot be questioned is the incredible drama that has played out over Earth’s famous final four. From Alvaro Quiros’s spectacular eagle on the par 5 18th in 2011 to Rory McIlroy’s five-birdie finish to win in 2012, Earth is proving every bit as adept at creating theatre as the much older Majlis at Emirates Golf Club. From the regular tees, Earth can be very challenging for amateurs when the greens are slick. Typically in immaculate condition, the landing areas are generously sized, but well-placed water hazards and deep swales and undulations that surround the large putting surfaces are always tricky to negotiate. Earth is a course that is growing in stature every year, and the addition of the brand new European Tour Performance Institute at the very cutting edge of modern coaching and technology will only enhance the reputation of the property further. Fire Course, Jumeirah Golf Estates Greg Norman’s second design at Jumeirah Golf Estates is a rustic beauty that complements the more overstated Earth course

F There is a steady rhythm to a round on Fire as different challenges present themselves

ire and Earth at Jumeirah Golf Estates are two courses rich in contrast, which is a little surprising given that they share the same designer, Australian legend Greg Norman. While Earth is a big, bold design that has much in common with those famed Ryder Cup venues that appear purpose-built for cavalier match play, Fire is a course that will stoke the flames of the golfing purist. It is not as striking as its DP World Tour Championship hosting neighbour, but Fire’s aesthetics are nonetheless impressive. Featuring a rustic, unkempt look characterised by wispy dropseed grasses and sprawling, jagged bunkering with trademark reddish sand, Fire offers subtlety where Earth offers high drama. Water is used sparingly and nowhere near as instrumentally as on the latter’s closing stretch. There is a steady rhythm to a round on Fire as different challenges present themselves. On the third hole, a downhill tee shot must find a fairway that sweeps towards a series of cross bunkers, with an approach to a partially blind green that kicks golf balls in from the left. On the very next hole, an approach is played to an elevated 2-tier green where putting from range is a real challenge. Blind approach shots are far less prominent here than on Earth, but on holes where they do occur, like the fabulous sixth, an elevated tee provides you with the chance to assess your options. This hole is also notable for its wonderful bunkering, which is perhaps Fire’s outstanding feature. The large greens are slick, with typically subtle borrows (although there are some holes, like the 4th, where the slopes are more severe) and throughout the round a fine balance is maintained between tough challenges and birdie chances. Fire may not have Earth’s closing stretch, but that won’t bother the purists on this strategic layout. For enquiries info@jumeirahgolfestates.com

The Address Montgomerie, Dubai This signature design in the opulent Emirates Hills residential community became Dubai’s ultimate resort course and provided a template for other developers to follow

I

With incredible levels of service, ideal location and a golf course that lends itself to all levels of players, it’s easy to see why its popularity snowballed

t is hard not to be impressed by everything about the Address Montgomerie Dubai. The Academy building located on the driving range is impressive enough, but dwarfed by one of the grandest clubhouses in the Middle East. The course, opened in 2002 and designed by Scottish European Tour great Colin Montgomerie, is spread across a vast acreage, harbouring 49 lakes and 81 large bunkers. Set in the heart of Emirates Hills, the villas that flank ‘The Monty’ (as it is affectionately known by the locals) are easily some of the most extravagant in the emirate. For 11 years, the Montgomerie has been a central focus of Dubai’s golf market. With its proximity to the other large residential communities The Springs and The Meadows, the club has the busiest driving range, the most bustling food and beverage outlets and a golf course where a weekend tee time is always the busiest. In the years between 2003-07 when corporate golf soared to an unprecedented peak in Dubai, The Address Montgomerie was arguably the most sought after venue. With incredible levels of service, ideal location and a golf course that lends itself to all levels of players, it’s easy to see why its popularity snowballed. While it would be inaccurate to describe the Monty as an easy course, it is certainly more generous towards the higher handicapper with its landing areas off the tee. That being said, several of its holes would rank among the hardest around, especially the fearsome par 5 18th, which measures 656 yards off the back tee and always plays into a prevailing wind. On the front nine, the par 3 sixth over water never fails to pose a problem, with the watery par 5 ninth almost as difficult as its fellow finisher on the back side. A day spent at this golf club is one of Dubai’s great indulgences. For enquiries info@themontgomerie.ae

The Els Club, Dubai One of the best-conditioned courses in Dubai has gone from strength to strength since opening in 2008

A

There aren’t many courses that provide a truer roll or a more thorough test of a player’s putting abilities, which is precisely how South African great Ernie Els wanted it

ny debate on the which course has the best greens in the UAE would be compelled to include The Els Club, Dubai. There aren’t many courses that provide a truer roll or a more thorough test of a player’s putting abilities, which is precisely how South African great Ernie Els wanted it. During men’s opens, when the slick greens are running at their fastest, it is not uncommon for players to find the green and then proceed to putt off it. A spacious and accommodating layout from tee to green that Els described as a ‘desert links’ style is well known for its distinctive bunkering, but as a test of golf, this track comes into its own on and around the greens. Typically the putting complexes are raised and protected not just by greenside traps, but deep swales that make chipping a delicate proposition. Controlling short shots hit from these swales to an upper level is an endless challenge on a course that is becoming a true favourite for corporate golf days and weekend players. The Els Club is great fun, which is essentially what the game is all about. Launching in 2008 during a challenging time for the global economy, the club weathered that tricky beginning and has since become one of Dubai’s golfing mainstays. It is highly regarded for having the best coaching academy in town, the Butch Harmon School of Golf, a fantastic new clubhouse that has now welcomed the launch of its signature Big Easy restaurant. Of the holes themselves, the four par 3s are a highlight, while par 4s like the third, seventh, ninth and 10th offer a stringent challenge even from the regular tees. Golfers won’t lose many balls on this venue (there is only one lake, shared by the seventh and 15th holes) but what it lacks in hazards it makes up for in the nuanced difficulty of the greens. The Track at Meydan Golf Replacing the beloved old course at Nad Al Sheba was never going to be easy, but The Track is delivering a golfing experience unique to Dubai and one that could be integral to bringing new players into the game

T It’s a venue designed to be welcoming, accessible and, most of all, affordable

he model employed by expert golf operations company Troon Golf is a familiar one in the Middle East: Great service, top courses in superb condition and price points that tend to reflect those facilities. With The Track at Meydan, however, Troon have changed things up, and in doing so, brought a brand new formula into the local market. Designed by Peter Harradine, The Track reflects the core model of Troon’s US operation: namely daily fee play. There are no members here, just tee times that are filled by all-comers. It’s a venue designed to be welcoming, accessible and, most of all, affordable. And in just a year of operation, The Track has already made an emphatic impact. Like the other nine-holer in town, Jebel Ali, the golf course offers plenty of variety and fun challenges packed into its shorter layout. It is fully floodlit, enabling play well into the evening and establishing itself as a firm favourite for golfers looking for a quick game after work, or seeking to escape the summer heat. Built on the same plot of land occupied by the old Nad Al Sheba, Harradine has completely redesigned the course, which already feels like it belongs in its surroundings. The lakes upon which The Track is situated have been on the site for 20 years, lending a mature feel to such a new venue. With numerous different tee boxes, the course can be set up to test players of all levels. The quick greens are a hugely popular feature and even good amateur players have struggled to record low scores from the tips. With a diverse selection of dining options in the nearby vicinity, coupled with The Track's propensity to attract newcomers to the game, Meydan’s nine-hole venue has proved an exciting addition to Dubai’s golfing landscape.
