Finding Dory – 18 June at Festival Theatre

Whisky Galore – 26 June at Festival Theatre

The Edinburgh International Film Festival returns for its landmark 70th edition between June 15th-26th. Showcasing some of the best films in international cinema, this year’s event will include: 22 World Premieres, 5 International Premieres, 17 European Premieres, and 85 UK Premieres. On top of that, retrospectives and old classics will also be shown, making it a must-attend event for fans of films past and present. Mark Adams, EIFF Artistic Director is very excited about the event. He said: “It is a real thrill to unveil this year’s programme and I am looking forward to showcasing so many great films and welcoming so many talented filmmakers to our 70th edition. As always we like to offer an incredibly broad range of work to ensure there is always something for everyone – from mesmeric retrospectives through to absorbing new short films, to 130 new features from 46 countries, rest assured this year’s EIFF will challenge, provoke and entertain audiences in equal measure.” The hotly-anticipated Disney-Pixar animation Finding Dory is one for the whole family that’s not to be missed. The longawaited sequel to the classic Finding Nemo has been a long time in the making, and it arrives in Edinburgh for its UK Premiere with open arms. If it’s anything like its predecessor, this will be a fun film for all age groups, and it’s bound to be another sure-fire winner in the highly impressive canon of Disney-Pixar. Another hotly-anticipated film is Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers, starring Johnny Depp, which marks the second feature in his True North trilogy – a trio of horror comedies set in Canada. Smith has been enjoying a creative career resurgence since going back to his independent roots, and Yoga Hosers looks set to be in vein with his last film Tusk, as it even includes the same characters. In addition, Smith will also be in attendance. Opening the gala will be the world premiere of Tommy’s Honor, a golfing drama starring Jurassic Park’s Sam Neil. Closing the gala will be the romantic comedy Whisky Galore, starring the superstar cross-dressing comic Eddie Izzard. In addition to world premieres, old classics can be seen like you’ve never seen them before; Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will be played with John William’s classic score performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Furthermore, the brand new 4k restoration of Highlander will have its world premiere to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved fantasy epic. Superhero movies are all the rage these days, but they’ve been around for decades, and POW!!! Live Action Comic Strip Adaptations: The First Generation will offer 2016 festival-goers the chance to explore the cinematic roots of the genre. This retrospective journey of caped crusaders will explore the evolution of live-action comic strip adaptations in cinema. The retrospective will focus on the best of the genre’s classics, from explosive martial arts to chic ‘60s espionage thrillers, classic Blaxploitation gems and imaginative science fiction. Keep an eye out for the 1966 Batman for some sheer comedy gold. You won’t be disappointed. However, this fascinating journey chronicling the evolution of comic book movies will be a treat for all aficionados of the current wave of Marvel and DC cinematic titans.

This year’s Best of British strand includes David Blair’s emotional drama Away, starring Timothy Spall and Juno Temple as two lost souls seeking companionship; Rita Osei’s debut coming of age drama Bliss, following a girl travelling across Scandinavia; Mercedes Grower’s offbeat debut Brakes led by Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh fame promises to be strange and hilarious; János Edelényi’s The Carer starring Brian Cox, who will be in attendance at this year’s Festival, will also be shown; and, lastly, Charles Henri Belleville’s thriller Jet Trash is another that comes hotly-anticipated. Furthermore, The Revenant’s Will Poulter’s new film Kids In Love will also be showing. However, Britain isn’t the only country receiving the spotlight. The very best in new American independent cinema will also be featured. This year, American Dreams audiences can enjoy an array of cinematic gems including: Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy Maggie’s Plan, with Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore each delivering critically acclaimed performances; Meg Ryan’s directorial debut Ithaca, described as an emotionally driven story of a teenager in World War II; the European Premiere of Rob Burnett’s The Fundamentals of Caring, a dramedy starring Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts as caregiver and dependent; Paco Cabezas’ Mr. Right, starring Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell as assassins; the International Premiere of fan film Slash; and World Premieres of Amanda Sharp’s Sticky Notes, starring Rose Leslie, and Steven Lewis Simpson’s road adventure Neither Wolf Nor Dog. For fans of the esoteric and horrific, Anna Biller’s psychosexual occult drama The Love Witch is a must see. Judging by the trailer, it looks set to be the sexiest, strangest and most original film of 2016 – if anything it’ll be the kinkiest. It rides into the capital on the back of a wave of critical acclaim. But if you like your horror with a little more bite, then Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie thriller Seoul Station sounds scrumptious. And to top it all off, Japanese auteur Shion Sono’s new comedy The Virgin Psychics will also be playing. If you’re familiar with the director’s oeuvre, then you’ll know the only thing you can expect is the unexpected. While he might be set for Hollywood directorial superstardom with the upcoming Thor sequel, Taika Waititi’s hilarious Hunt for the Wilderpeople – which follows the search for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who get lost in the wild – will also be showing. Waititi has earned himself a reputation for his cracking comedic output in recent years, especially after 2014’s mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows. This is sure to be another fantastic entry to his impressive filmography. All of these – and much more – are in store at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. This annual event is a cultural cinematic cornerstone, and you owe it to yourself to pop up and see a few great films, while immersing yourself in the cracking atmosphere that comes with it. With top notch special guests, unique retrospectives and spotlights shining on cinematic regions from across the globe, there’s bound to be something for all tastes to enjoy.

THE WEST END FE

What started 20 years ago as a small festival centred o

Errors will play at Oran Mor West End Festival All Dayer on 19 June

It’s back again this year with over a hundred Glasgow based organisations and art groups, along with local and international artists. Get ready for a variety of activities and projects, music, local history events, exhibitions, theatre and dance performances and much more. Since its beginning, more than a million visitors have attended the event and 2015’s festival included over 400 events in 80 venues across Glasgow’s West End. Director of the West End Festival (WEF) said, “Over the last 21 years, we have not only played to over a million people in free and ticketed events, but we have given birth to a number of important mini-festivals such as the Bard in the Botanics, the Cottier

early – Munro’s will be hosting an event called Eden Mill: Gin Tasting on 8 June. If you’re up for a laugh, the Stand has your back with four events – The Friday Show will take place every Friday between the 3rd of June and 26th of June. Each session starts at half seven. Have yourself a fun Friday! If that’s not enough to make you laugh, no fear; every Saturday between the 3rd and 26th of June the Stand promises the best night out(s) in Glasgow. Five different acts each week, which will include the best headliners from the UK and abroad. Glasgow Kelvin College final year students can’t wait to present their 2016 Degree show in fashion, jewellery and art. Every day, from 11am to 5pm from Saturday 4th to Saturday 11th, you can come along to this exhibition, called So it Begins: Fashion, Art, Jewellery. Liz Scobie, WEF chairman said, “A festival as dynamic as WEF in a city as dynamic as Glasgow can’t stand still, and as well as new venues and new performers, we hope you notice the ever-increasing section on singing. This year there are at least 29 choirs and singing groups – a whole festival in its own right! “The West End Festival is 21 today and all of us connected with it feel very happy

Chamber Project, the Gibson Street Gala, the Partick Farmers’ Markets and The Electric Gardens. All of which have their origins in the West End Festival, and all of which have gone on to bigger things.” WEF has announced some exciting new additions for its 21st festival, such as the winter festival and The Electric Gardens at the Botanic Gardens but as a result, unfortunately the popular Byres Road parade has been suspended from events this year. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – who would have thought that saying applied to parades? The parade will return in future events bigger and better than ever. Let’s not talk about what we’ll miss this year – let’s go a bit into what we’ll actually be seeing. April marked the 400 year anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, so on Friday 3 June; St Brides Church will be hosting Sounds of Shakespeare, to commemorate the death of the legendary writer. On the subject of Shakespeare, the Grosvenor Cinema will be presenting Grigori Kozintsev’s critically acclaimed Shakespearean drama King Lear from 1971. Lear at this film on Saturday 4 June at 4pm. Did you know that the 11th of June is World Gin Day? Celebrate a couple of days

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

ESTIVAL RETURNS!

on Byres Road has become Glasgow’s largest cultural event that will be running from June 3rd to June 26th. that we’ve reached this major milestone. Over the years we’ve grown to become the largest community festival in Scotland and this is due to the efforts of a small army of dedicated staff, volunteers who donate their time and effort, and numerous supporters and sponsors who give us their money and encouragement. “We must thank Glasgow Life, the W M Mann Foundation, the Hugh Fraser Foundation, the Cross Foundation and the Scottish Book Trust for their contributions. But special thanks must be reserved for Glasgow City Council whose confidence in the WEF has never wavered. Let Glasgow Flourish!” WEF is supporting the Big Lunch this year, but what is that? It’s a simple idea from the Eden Project, and the aim is to get as many people from across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually in June as a simple act of community, friendship and fun. In 2015, 7.29million people took to the streets and lunched with their neighbours. WEF aims to spread awareness for this event, which is taking place on June 12th nationwide. Scobie added, “We took our time this year to think of how best to go about making sure the festival is sustainable in the future.

“We’ve come to realise that as the public are so enthusiastic about the parade and businesses in the West End increase takings on Festival Sunday, we need to start to ask for help and support in future years. “We’ve never been able to ticket the event, so we can’t charge for attending the parade, plus we’ve always wanted to ensure a real family day out for everyone to enjoy. “As a charity and organisation run by volunteers we now have to ask the public to contribute to helping ensure we can make Festival Sunday happen.” If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, then Glasgow band Belle And Sebastian will perform a series of shows. The group formed in the city 20 years ago, and will play Glasgow University Union debating hall on 13, 14 and 15 June. Not to mention Òran Mór’s 4th Annual West End Festival All Dayer will again bring together 14 great Scottish acts over 3 stages in 1 building on 19 June. The line-up will include Prides, Errors, De Rosa, Catholic Action, and Be Charlotte. There’s something for everyone here – the events we’ve described aren’t even a tiny slice of what’s going on this month. Finding what’s right for you will be absolutely no bother; there is no reason not to participate!

WHAT’S ON

TREAT YOURSELF TO A SPA IN THE CITY Experience the latest trends in health and beauty without burning a hole in your pocket at this year’s Spa in the City in Edinburgh. Scotland’s amazing free beauty event is back and waiting to welcome you for a weekend of pampering in Edinburgh’s city centre. They will be showcasing top beauty brands and featuring some of the best products on the market. From Saturday the 2nd to Sunday the 3rd of July you will be able to find a number of different beauty delights at St Andrew Square. The health and beauty event is back for the ninth year in a row and will polish, preen, relax and rejuvenate you. With a range of the top names in health and beauty, you will be spoilt for choice! Also back by popular demand is the Beauty Heroes Marquee, who are offering health and beauty insights, advice, tips and tricks and will be ready to answer all your beauty questions. The SITC event is free and treatments are on a first come, first get basis. A limited number of goodie bags will be available each day for those early birds. Some of this year’s trends and products include:

SPRAY-ON NAIL POLISH

VOLUME AU NATURALE

Nails Inc. released Paint Can nail polish in November last year and the product sold out in a week. It’s pegged as the world’s fastest manicure. Apply a base coat, spray over the nail area and then wash your hands to reveal a show stopping manicure. The product for now only comes in two shades, Shoreditch Lane which is metallic silver and Hoxton Market which is a hot pink. However the company promises that more colours are on the way soon.

It’s time for sleeker more natural looking blow-dries this summer with many products for “real girl hair” on its way.

MONGONGO OIL

DNA RANGES

This oil’s popularity in the rest of the world has grown as we become more educated about its beneficial qualities. Not only does it have nutritive benefits, but it is also a skin and hair emollient and skin protectant. It contains vitamin E, polyunsaturated fatty acids and alpha-eleostearic acid.

STICK YOUR NECK OUT Although many of us worry about our skin especially on our necks and chests, only a third of us are using a neck cream to help it. Lifting and firming products for chin to bust are high up on the agenda this year for beauty companies.

CAN’T GET TO THE CITY? TRY THESE DIY TREATMENTS AT HOME

Having a home spa day you can enjoy alone or with friends? With all of the stresses of everyday life, it’s important that we take some time for ourselves and just relax. However not everyone can afford the luxury of a day at the spa or even have the time. Here are five DIY treatments on how you can treat yourself at home!

LUXURIOUS FACIAL

What you will need:

ONE LEMON THREE WHOLE STRAWBERRIES ONE BANANA

The Spa in the City event will have you feeling relaxed, pampered and rejuvenated without costing you a penny.

strawberries and dice.

STEP TWO: Mash the diced strawberries in a small bowl along with the banana

STEP THREE: Add the juice from one lemon and apply to the face. Avoid contact with eyes.

STEP FOUR: Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. STEP FIVE: Once the mask starts to feel dry wash off with cool water

This DIY face mask will brighten up a tired complexion. The vitamin C in the strawberries lightens any dark spots on the face; the lemon exfoliates the face while the banana conditions it.

STEP ONE: Soak your feet in warm water with the

Epsom salt for 10-15 minutes.

STEP TWO: Mix 2 parts olive oil to 3 parts brown sugar to create a scrub. STEP THREE: Rub the mixture into your feet and rinse thoroughly. STEP FOUR: Apply your favourite body lotion or cream to your feet. If you wish put on thick socks and let your feet soak in the moisture.

This pedicure is great for anyone with rough looking feet. The Epsom salts relax tired feet and the brown sugar helps exfoliate the skin.

REJUVENATING MANICURE What you will need:

ONE LEMON HALF OF ONE CUCUMBER

STEP ONE: Slice the lemon and cucumber into a bowl of cool water

STEP TWO: Soak hands for ten minutes STEP THREE: Push back cuticles with an orange stick and paint nails as usual.

This manicure is perfect if your nails are looking dull and yellow. A soak in this formula will help rejuvenate them. The lemon bleaches the nails that are stained and the cucumber soothes the skin on your hands.

STEP ONE: Fill the tub up with warm water, adding

GRADUATION MEALS

YOU’VE MADE IT! The endless nights of dissertation panic are finally over, now it’s time to chill and enjoy the summer before you enter the world of full-time work. However, before you head off on that eight week trip around Europe or start your exciting internship there’s the small matter of the graduation dinner to be taken care of – which is generally either a chance for your whole family to make a fuss of you for making it through four difficult years or a last meal with all your uni chums before you head off in different directions. We figured you’ve worked hard enough these last few months, so we’ve done all the groundwork for you and picked some of the best restaurants in Glasgow and Edinburgh, no matter what kind of graduation meal you’re planning. Cheers!

Stac Polly First established back in 1990, Stac Polly is one of Edinburgh’s original Scottish fine dining restaurants and offers exciting interpretations of traditional and modern Scottish cuisine with a fabulously Scottish interior that features Bute tweed upholstery. Named after the spectacular, towering mountain Stac Pollaidh, the restaurant, which is located on Dublin Street, has been providing fine dining for over 25 years and has a newly refurbished brasserie, gin and wine bar upstairs that offers a fresh and laid back environment, perfect for a casual graduation meal. However, for those looking for something more intimate, they also have private rooms available for graduation parties. Although it doesn’t matter if you choose to spend your night in one of those or on the great outdoor spaces at the restaurant, you are guaranteed to enjoy a delicious, homely, freshly prepared dish and a great drink to go along with it – they offer Scottish beers from the Orkney Brewery, premium Scottish botanical gins, fine wines and an eclectic selection of malt whiskies.

The venue is in one of the most convenient locations in the city, just two minutes away from Sauchiehall Street (perfect for those who want to keep the party going) and they’ll provide great food, excellent music and fine service for just £35pp – so all you need to worry about is sorting out the good company! Tigerlily

Piccolo Mondo

La Rotunda/Rioja

If you’re looking to really celebrate in style, Tigerlily is the ideal venue – it’s famous for the gorgeous interior design, extensive cocktail list (seriously, there’s over 100 available) and seasonal menus. This boutique hotel, bar and restaurant is one of the most stylish spots in Edinburgh, with pink hues, mirrored walls and chandeliers, and takes pride in its menus, using the best produce possible. They also seriously focus on their drinks with a team of award-winning mixologists on hand to produce mouth-watering concoctions every day of the week. It goes without saying that you’ll have a memorable night at Tigerlily and considering it is just a short walk from Usher Hall and only £30pp, including a glass of Chandon sparkling on arrival, we can’t think of a better option for the stylish at heart.

For those looking to celebrate their hard work with a big family meal, the warm and welcoming Piccolo Mondo is sure to be a brilliant choice. Previously voted Scotland’s best Italian, it’s a safe bet that the food here will be the highlight of your graduation, never mind the 2:1! The friendly staff have run, owned and worked in some of Glasgow’s most notable Italian restaurants and have brought all their knowledge to Piccolo Mondo, making it one of the best spots in the city for a quality Italian meal. The graduation menu from Piccolo Mondo is also one of the most affordable options we’ve featured at £21.50pp but the choice on offer with this option is superb and is guaranteed to please all of the family.

One of our most purse friendly options for graduation meals comes from contemporary Italian restaurant, La Rotunda, which is located in the heart of Finnieston. The relaxed setting makes it perfect for a graduation meal with friends or family and the £19.95pp three course menu offers a great selection and includes a glass of prosecco each. Alternatively, if you’re also looking for the perfect place in Finnieston to celebrate your graduation but aren’t the biggest fan of Italian food, how about one of the most authentic Tapas restaurants in Glasgow? Rioja has a creative team of Spanish chefs on hand to prepare diverse, made to order dishes and was awarded the 2015 Opentable Diners’ Choice Award. The restaurant also has a list of unique cocktails and wines that will perfectly compliment the food, so there’s sure to be a drink and dish everyone can enjoy.

WHAT’S ON

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL MAGIC FESTIVAL Immerse yourself in magic this June with sleight of hand tricks that challenge the eye, world famous performers, grand illusions and plenty of other exciting events at the seventh annual Edinburgh International Magic Festival. The UK’s biggest festival of innovative and cutting-edge magic is back from 1-8 July and will have Edinburgh entranced with jaw-dropping stunts from some of the greatest illusionists in the industry, mindreaders and accomplished magicians from around the world. Some of the top talent from the world of magic, both locally and internationally, will be performing at the festival. Kevin Quantum, the Artistic Director of MagicFest who was tutored by magic legends Penn & Teller and is also performing, commented on some of the top acts: “This year we have arguably one of the greatest living legends in Magic, Juan Tamariz, and one of the greatest up-and-coming stars, Hector Mancha, both featuring at the Festival.” It truly doesn’t matter if you are amazed by mind-reading; love big, bold theatrical stunts; enjoy simple sleight of hand or if you’re the type to question everything

and are a true disbeliever, there will be an event you can enjoy – even if it’s just to say ‘I can definitely explain that, I’m not fooled’. One of the big highlights of this year’s festival is the introduction of the new three day MagicFair. From 1-3 July at Summerhall, visitors can watch up to 10 live shows with just one ticket. Between shows magic enthusiasts can indulge at the magic and circus shop, explore the ribbon maze and enjoy spontaneous closeup magic in the open-air courtyard with food, drink and music. The multi-room experience has morning sessions that are family friendly with magic school workshops, treasure hunts, wand-crafting, live shows and free entry for under sevens. The afternoon sessions are suitable for all ages with a mix of theatrical, close-up and stage magic whilst the evening sessions are adult themed with late night horror magic from Luke Eaton in the anatomy room, a special VIP performance from BBC’s ‘The Real Hustle’ star R. Paul Wilson and a potentially life changing experiment from sell-out Scottish mind-reader Colin Cloud.

The Secret Room is another highlyanticipated event which is returning to Lauriston Castle after three years of sell out shows. The show will transport guests back in time to explore clandestine laboratories and hidden passages as three of Scotland’s finest magicians animate the castle’s intriguing past with stories, performances and illusions. The festival will also feature special oneoff events including Magic a la carte at Tigerlily on 7 July, which lets you choose from the stylish restaurant’s a la carte menu, then choose from the magic menu and design your own bespoke show to be performed at your table, this event is £50 per person. Award-winning magician Vincent Gambini will also perform on 2nd and 3rd July with his ‘This is not a Magic Show’, which is part-performance, part deconstructed magic tricks to allow audiences an insight into the misdirection, cliches and invisible mechanics at play in magic – this could be one for those disbelievers. Artistic Director of MagicFest, Kevin Quantum, also added about the event: “It’s our biggest line-up to date with the launch of MagicFair, free entry for under 7s, and the addition of a matinee performance at the Gala Show, allowing us to share magic and its top stars with more people than ever before. Watch out for surprises around the city too!”

A DECADE WORTH OF INTELLECTUAL FUN – HAPPY BIRTHDAY GLASGOW SCIENCE FAIR!

In celebration of both the 10th birthday of the Glasgow Science Festival and Scotland’s 2016 ‘Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design’, this year’s event features a bumper programme full of fantastic events, including film screenings, debates, pub lectures, exhibitions, family days and food and drink. The aim of the festival, which will run from 9-19 June, is to showcase the outstanding contribution Glasgow and Glasgow based researchers make to the worlds of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). Although the festival has a somewhat

serious purpose, the varied events in the festival, which take place in venues across Glasgow, are often lighthearted and handson and encourage thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds to explore STEMM and the social and ethical issues surrounding these subjects. With it being the 10th birthday of the festival, celebrations are definitely in order and really, what’s a birthday without cake? The ‘Big Birthday Science Bake Off’ will allow the public to enter their best sciencethemed cakes in a competition hosted at the University of Glasgow – think Pi Pies, edible

Earths and periodic puddings. Aside from birthday celebrations, the festival will feature many events that relate to the theme ‘Glasgow Innovates’, which is part of the ‘Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design’ – an initiative led by VisitScotland. In the wake of the groundbreaking discovery announced earlier this year, ‘Making Waves: Listening to Einstein’s Universe’ will see Professor Jim Hough FRS and other University of Glasgow black hole hunters share the story of how gravitational waves were detected in a discussion at the Boyd Orr Building on 10 June. From the therapeutic potential of cannabis, to doping in sport, drugs will be the focus of discussion in two of the events at the festival. ‘Drugs in Sport: The Trial’ will allow audiences to sit in on the jury of a mock court case, where lawyers and scientists will debate the issue of drug doping, at this event hosted by comedian Susan Morrison on 14 June. ‘Cannabis: What Do We Know’, is set to be another interesting drug-themed event, which takes an objective look at cannabis. The UK’s leading expert on the drug, Professor Roger Pewtree, and other pharmacologists will discuss both the abuse of the drug and its use as a medical treatment on 11 June at The Record Factory. Other events at the festival will promote

the achievements of lesser-known women in science. A talk by Catherine Booth from the National Library of Scotland at the Glasgow Women’s Library will shed a light on Scottish female scientists of the past while the beautifully illustrated book “The Mighty Women of Science” will be launched at the festival by Clare Forrest and Fiona Gordon. Some other GSF highlights include ‘Peake into Space: Cosmic Cabaret’ which coincides with UK astronaut Tim Peake’s return to earth and will showcase speciallycommissioned space themed poetry, music and comedy by local artists; a screening of the award winning drama ‘Patrick’s Day’, followed by a Q&A with UoG clinical psychologists to explore the issues around mental health; outdoor screenings of both Jurrasic Park and E.T the Extra Terrestrial in the gothic quadrangles of the University of Glasgow and many other events that allow audiences to explore science in new ways. Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland said of the festival: “We are delighted that Scotland’s themed year will feature as a dedicated ‘Glasgow Innovates’ programme strand this year, with topics as diverse as gravitational waves to career opportunities in Scotland’s space sector. So whether you are a budding scientist in the making or keen to ask an expert a burning question – it’s set to be a packed two weeks of education, inspiration and fun.” by Courtney Hendry Online Editor

BEERS BEFORE TEARS This is celebrated on June the 15th annually throughout the United Kingdom, otherwise known as ‘Beer Day Britain’. As beer is officially recognised as the U.K’s National drink it only makes sense for us to give it its own day. This is celebrated across the nation by visiting local pubs and bars and spending your well earned government funded student loan on alcohol. Unless you have a job, which in that case, be less reckless with your money. However there is nothing quite like indulging a beer in a ray of sunshine, sitting on a bench at the back of a pub, in the magnificent beer garden. They are only useful in the summer and are reserved as glorified smoking areas

throughout the rest of the year. So perhaps on June 15th this year, you might consider taking time out of your schedule to participate in Beer Day. It’s a Wednesday so it’s understandable if you don’t want to attend work or university with a horrific hangover the following day. No-one enjoys the tears of a hangover. That’s why you should consider requesting the very next day off in advance to celebrate. Any excuse to celebrate brings joy to most people’s lives. Joy in the form of well brewed ale. the appropriate time to celebrate Beer Day across the United Kingdom. It isn’t the most widely known National Day in our history however it holds historical meaning. The reason Beer Day Britain is on the 15th of June annually is because it is the same date that Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. This was to make peace between the unpopular King John of England and a group of rebellious and idealistic Barons. Now that the history lesson is over, perhaps you will consider participating in the event when the day 11. 49 comes. If you do well there’s only one 9.79 thing to say, by Billal Rahman billsblog2015.wordpress.com enjoy. Mains

June is a crucial month annually as it signals the beginning of a typical short Scottish Summer. We are due a few weeks of sun before the weather descends into a grim abyss for the latter half of the year. The beginning of summer isn’t the only important event occurring as this June will mark the historical EU Referendum. Voters across the U.K will decide the fate of our place within the European Union. During the summer there is always a rise in popularity for beer gardens across major cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh. Beer gardens are typically full of a multitude of personalities all gathered for the sole purpose of enjoying a beverage in the sun.

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

SUPER SCOTTISH STUDENT SAVINGS Being broke. Hard up. Penniless. Some would argue that this is just part of student life. I challenge you to find someone who doesn’t have a story about their frugality as a student. Perhaps they lived on Koka noodles for three solid years or maybe stole their neighbour’s WiFi all year so they could stream episodes of Still Game on Netflix. Everyone has their story. However, when it comes to being a Scottish student, there is one big advantage that you have over many, many others. Your education is free! It may not seem like a big deal as it’s the norm for you, but when you actually think about it, compared to English students, for example, you are saving yourself anywhere between £15,000 and £36,000! That’s a lot of money. So, if you’re saving all this money, why are you always skint? It’s safe to assume that you have some sort of income. Whether it be a parttime job, bursary or a student loan, you should have money coming into your bank account each month. What’s also safe to assume is that you’ll have money going out of your account each month in the form of rent, supplies and utility bills. And here is where you can start making some savings so you can take a step up from those Koka noodles.

POWER SAVINGS Did you know that consumers are overpaying energy companies £1.2bn a year? These overpayments are usually from people who simply don’t know that there are cheaper options out there and this is no different from students. Challenge your energy supplier, more often than not, there will be a cheaper tariff available. You just need to go looking for it. The internet can be a great tool here, often the best deals are found online. A simple Google search can potentially result in savings of a couple of hundred pounds a year. These types of savings are not to be dismissed.

DRINK SMARTER Spending more than you can afford, sound familiar? When it comes to students, this usually occurs on a night out. You’re studying hard; you’re writing papers by the dozen. You deserve to blow off some steam! But you can do it smarter. You will no doubt have seen fellow students handing out flyers for clubs in the street, and you usually class them as pests, but ultimately, these guys can be your best friends. They will be targeting students at student prices, so why not try them out? You never know, you might just find your new local.

EAT BETTER While we’re on the subject of a good night out, how many times have you woke up the morning after, hungover, staring at the box of chips, cheese and kebab sauce you bought at 3am? Too many, I bet. Stop splashing out on these indulgences, and not just after a night out. Spending five or ten pounds a time on takeaway food might not seem much, but it all adds up. For the same price, you will be able to buy a week’s worth of perfectly good food from a Lidl or an Aldi. Eating cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean eating worse, in fact, it can even be the opposite. Learn to cook and save yourself a tidy sum.

STUDENT PRIVILEGES Remember that piece of rectangular plastic you’re given at the start of the year with your picture on it? That can be such an ally in your quest for student savings. As mentioned before, being a student can get you cheaper drinks, and while that may be your priority, it can help you save on so many other things. Beyond a £4 venom, your student card can save you money on books, on clothes, on trips, on software, on food, on gadgets, on dance classes! Okay, that last one was a little left-field, but it goes to show that you can get a discount on so many things; you’ve just got to ask. In today’s world, the student discount is commonplace, and you should be that advantageous student.

Just because you’re a student doesn’t mean you can’t have any money. Don’t accept that stereotype. If you use your brain, make a plan and stick to it, you will most certainly find your pockets a little fuller at the end of the month.

WHAT’S ON

FIVE COCKTAILS FOR YOU TO…

GINJOY? GIN FIZZ

ANYTHING IS A PUN WHEN YOU’VE HAD ENOUGH GIN – HERE ARE WAYS TO TAKE YOURS.

What you will need: 50ml gin, 30ml lemon juice, 10ml sugar syrup, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 20ml of lightly whipped egg white (optional) and chilled soda water, as much as you’d like. How it’s done: Shake up the lemon juice, gin, sugar syrup, egg white and sugar with some ice in a cocktail shaker and then pour into a glass filled with ice cubes. Top with soda water until you are satisfied and voila. It’s really that easy.

CORPSE REVIVER

What you will need: 20ml gin, 20ml Cointreau, 20ml Lillet, 20ml lemon juice and a dash of absinth.

CHERRY SOUR

What you will need: 50ml gin, 25ml fresh lemon juice, 12.5ml pineapple juice, 12.5ml sugar syrup, Barspoon celery bitters and egg whites.

THE LAST WORD

What you will need: 40ml gin, 40ml maraschino liqueur, 40ml green chartreuse, 40ml fresh lime juice.

A VERY GINTERESTING FESTIVAL

How it’s done: Get all of your ingredients together and shake in a cocktail shaker with a little bit of ice, then pour. What’s spookier, the name of the cocktail or the fact that it has absinth in it? Yikes.

How it’s done: Place the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and “dry shake” (just don’t add ice), then fill with ice cubes and shake vigorously again. Strain it into a glass for that bitter bliss.

THIS SUMMER, EDINBURGH CELEBRATES THE BEST GIN ABOUT! What’s your drink? Are you a spirit person, interested in a good old gin? You’re in luck – this summer, Edinburgh’s Juniper Festival is returning for its third year. On the weekend starting Friday, 10th of June, Summerhall in Edinburgh will be welcoming you and offering you all sorts of great gins to try and learn about. Celebrate World Gin Day on Friday, or screw it, make a whole weekend out of it – 35 different producers will be bringing along their best quality products and sampling the 60 products in different ways. Local favourites such as Edinburgh Gin, Daffy’s and Pickering’s Gin will be making an appearance. Enjoy gin based cocktails with a variety of foods; the Juniper Festival is welcoming more food stalls than it has in its previous festivals to make sure that every guest is properly catered to. If you need a break from all the excitement of the gin (not likely) there will also be locally handmade crafts and fashions to have a gander at. Summerhall, the venue in which the Juniper Festival will be held, is also used as venue 26 in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (which will be coming this August). This building used to be home to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies but is now a cultural hub. The multi-arts complex has over 600 rooms, some of which are small libraries, museums, studios and labs. Its 400 staff members are kept busy as half a million people visit annually, likely to see some of the 700 shows it hosts every year. When Summerhall first came about in the

1710’s, it was first a cottage, farm and family run brewery. This historic building has had quite a diverse history and now is hailed as the “spiritual home” of the Juniper Festival. World Gin Day is a global celebration of everything to do with Gin, and this is the eighth year of rejoicing in the spirit. It was organised by Gin Monkey who had one goal: to bring the world together with a legitimate reason to enjoy all things gin. Not only is World Gin Day being celebrated in Edinburgh, but several venues in the UK will be doing something to celebrate. Remedy, Southport’s only gin bar, will be holding the first ever Southport Gin Festival from Friday 11th to Sunday 12th. London will be hosting its own unique Junipalooza, where you can meet the makers behind the gins, and “ginsmiths” from all over the world will be to attend the festival. But back to our own Juniper Festival – on Friday and Saturday there will be festival sessions from 5:30pm to 10pm, but on Saturday there will be an extra session from 12pm to 4:30pm. Sunday’s session will take place from 12:30pm to 5pm. Standard tickets for the festival can be bought from £19.60. No lies, gin is a really, really refreshing drink and honestly perfect for a summer day. If you’ve got some free time on the weekend of Friday, 11th June, and wish to explore the world of gin, then perhaps this is the by Holly Fleming festival for Twitter: @hol7ly you! h.fleming@tsaglasgow.com

How it’s done: Add everything together with a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a glass and drink it until your last, drunkenly slurred word.

FLORA DORA

What you will need: 40ml gin, 20ml fresh lime juice, 10ml raspberry syrup and as much ginger beer as you want to top it with. How it’s done: Add all of the ingredients together in a glass filled with ice. Mix and you’re done! Fun, fruity, cutie cocktail!

LIFESTYLE FIRSTLY, you’ll need to find a stable holiday resort and location to reside in for the next several weeks and months of your life. Ranging from Magaluf to Malia there are plenty of cities and countries that offer PR jobs in exotic locations. Perhaps carrying out the task with a group of companions will benefit you more and bring more familiarity and comfort with the experience. However if you unfortunately don’t have any friends, then you should climb off that high horse and ride along solo because you will likely not regret it. A land of parties and promise awaits you.

THE LOW DOWN TO BEING A PR REP ABROAD by Billal Rahman billsblog2015.wordpress.com

@Billzinyourgaff

b.rahman@tsaglasgow.com

Many young individuals across the United Kingdom opt to spend their summers working abroad. Selecting locales that have an excellent party vibe is common practise among youths. Some choose to work behind the bar serving travellers enough alcohol that will cripple a person’s organs. Others prefer to promote various clubs, bars and events in hotels and hostels alike. Day to day duties consist of arranging entertaining trips to popular tourist attractions for guests in the morning and afternoon. This is usually accompanied with a horrific hangover as it’s quite likely any PR rep was out the previous night with other hotel guests and international colleagues. Trips conducted by reps include booze cruise, theme parks and many more amusing experiences. The booze cruise is an interesting concept in your mind but when it comes to the event, pray you

haven’t been up the previous night vomiting out your intestines. It can be enjoyed if you were lucky to be sober the night before. Once the afternoon events are concluded and day turns to night, then the real amusement begins. Parading from pub to pub with a group of intoxicated individuals is a hilarious experience that can be enjoyed by the majority of easy going people. Reeling in hotel guests as customers for clubs and pubs across the strip is very beneficial as a PR rep because that’s a core aspect of the job. Let’s be honest it’s also the most fun. Getting intoxicated for free for bringing in clientele to the establishment is a rather good catch. That’s a standard outlook on the whole becoming a PR concept but if you are unconvinced or considering taking on the position then you should take into account the following:

In that land there will be people you won’t like, people you love and even people you think you love. One night stands have that affect. There will be plenty of memories and stories to share from the experiences you enjoy and endure. Clearly, departing your home for a summer to work abroad is a tantalizing decision. There is upside and downside to the scenario. You could run out of financial support so make sure whatever job you take actually pays and isn’t some unpaid voluntary nonsense. Also ensure that you get a decent meal. Surviving on kebabs, KFC and noodles will do more harm than good. Overall it is perhaps one of the most crucial decisions of one’s young life. In between your next University semester or college year there will be time to get away from the stress of life and the opportunity to have a good time abroad is there. Albeit working abroad. At least you get paid and laid. It’s a summer of drunken joy if you want it to be.

WHAT’S ON LGBTI

TEGAN AND SARA

LOVE YOU TO DEATH Indie pop darlings Tegan and Sara return with their latest album Love You to Death, a record that sees the duo expand on the anthemic pop seen on the hugely successful Heartthrob even further. For the unfamiliar, Tegan and Sara have been every gay teens idol’s growing up in the mid 2000s. As well as being amazing musicians and singers, Canada’s prime identical-twin-lesbian-pop-duo are staunch activists for equality. Plus they’re really funny and sang Everything is Awesome from The Lego Movie, which is absolutely worth a mention. The group retains and hones the anthemic pop anthems heard on Heartthrob; with tracks like “That Girl” proving reminiscent of previous album highlight “Closer.” Love You To Death definitely draws more inspiration from radio friendly electro pop from the 80s than Heartthrob did; “Faint of Heart” could be a Toto anthem, while “B/WU” sounds like Bronski Beat and “Stop Desire” could be written by 80s enthusiast Brandon Flowers. As always, Tegan and Sara hide no emotional baggage or internal struggles from the listener. Even in their indie days, the duo was renowned for their personal and sometimes dark lyrics; this remains for the latest record, masked perhaps by the glossy and perfect pop production. The listener experiences songs of devotion like “Faint of Heart,” insisting true love survives all odds, as well as a relationship’s weaker moments on “100X.” What is most apparent is that Tegan and Sara decided to run with what made their last album so amazing and perfect a previously untouched territory for the band. As singers they haven’t sounded better, with tracks like “Dying to Know” and heartbreaking ballad “100X” showcasing how their vocal ranges have expanded – if anything, their vocals are almost too good, long gone are the

gritty and not-so-perfect vocal performances of So Jealous and The Con. Album highlights include “U-Turn,” a 90s-tinged, dizzy pop anthem with a big chunky synth melody and the fast-paced “Stop Desire.” This fan boy’s favourite, however, is “B/W/U,” the twins’ melodic rejection of marriage and the idea a ring and contract validates a couple’s love. “We don’t need a white wedding,” lyrics that suggest gay marriage is more nuanced than one might consider. Tegan and Sara has always been a political band, and this record is no different. Based on a relationship of Sara’s, “Boyfriend” toys with gender roles and mirrors the universal gay relationship story we’ve all had (“I don’t want to be your secret anymore”). There is the occasional misstep, seen on “White Knuckles,” which fails to stand out from sonically similar tracks. And the record feels lacking in quieter moments as seen in the band’s previous records. “100X” is a beautiful ballad that has real resonance in a collection of fast-paced, anthemic pop songs, but Tegan and Sara thrive in their ballads, heartbreaking and emotionallydriven. Love You To Death proves to be another stellar effort from Tegan and Sara. With the exception of two or three tracks, the girls sing to a specific person, through the listener. Tegan and Sara continue to bare their souls and tell stories universally experienced by us all: heartbreak, the excitement of new love, gender politics, insecurity. Their sound has evolved and finessed over their near 20 years in music, but the qualities present in Tegan and Sara’s music – unapologetic honesty, perfect melodies and unique vocal performances – continues to inspire and excite listeners with every record. Love You To Death is released 3rd June

LGBTI NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD As his term as President draws to an end, Barack Obama’s administration is attempting to complete its unprecedented progress in achieving LGBT+ equality by naming the first national monument dedicated to the fight against LGBT+ discrimination. A likely location is the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar in New York City where resistance to police intervention spearheaded the modern gay rights movement. It is already an official city landmark, the first site appointed such a status due to its significance to LGBTI history. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a state law in April that will allow the city park outside the Stonewall Inn to become federal land. That means President Obama could use his executive authority under the Antiquities Act to declare the land a historic site just in time for Pride Month next month. Previous tributes, retellings and monuments have failed to highlight accordingly the contribution to transgender activists; hopefully an official national monument will serve as a fitting tribute to the forefathers and mothers of the gay rights movement.

The Caledonian Thebans, a gay men’s rugby team from Edinburgh, has won the Hoagland Cup, a worldwide rugby tournament. The team beat the Chicago Dragons 38 – 12 in the final match, winning all six previous matches. Club chairman Owen Greechan told Pink News “Scotland has always been on the inclusive rugby map, but now we’ve put our name in lights and it’s important we keep building on that.” The club, based at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, competes with inclusive and mainstream teams alike and has placed an official bid to host the Hoagland Cup 2018 in Edinburgh. The importance of seeing successful LGBT+ people, especially sportspeople, has the power to shape perceptions of LGBT+ people for the better and inspire future generations of LGBT+ youth.

UK legislators are pushing ground-breaking legislation that will allows British same-sex couple travelling abroad to obtain official confirmation from the government confirming their next-of-kin status, challenging less-progressive countries from preventing equal rights for LGBT+ couples. This will allow couples to present the document to hospital staff, police and government officials in the event of their spouses becoming ill or dying abroad. Gay marriage may be legal in 15 countries, but LGBT+ couples are largely left with no next-of-kin rights in emergency situations in most countries. The move follows the harrowing case of Marco Bulmer-Rizzi, whose husband David died on their honeymoon in Australia. Marco was told by the state authorities that the death certificate would read “never married” as same-sex marriage was not recognised.

The fight for transgender equality continues as Americans continue to deliberate whether trans people should be allowed to use the public bathroom of their authentic gender. This law – forcing transgender people to use public toilets that correspond to the gender assigned to them at birth – creates further barriers for trans people, discrediting their identities and degrading their human rights, and demonstrates bluntly that trans equality is still an important issue that needs defending. It has transformed from a niche news story to a national human rights issue, in which trans men and women and their allies must defend the basic right to identify as their authentic gender without scrutiny or attack. Conservatives fear that laws permitting free bathroom usage will make children and women susceptible to sexual assault all while defending their religious freedom in discriminating against trans people. To quote Ted Cruz’s ad campaign, “Should a grown man pretending to be a woman be allowed to use the women’s restroom? The same restroom used by your daughter?” A dangerous and inaccurate attack on transgender people entitled to the same rights as their cisgender counterparts.

In the gayest of gay news, Cher turned 70 this month, celebrating more than 50 years in show business. The Goddess of Pop and ardent Twitter enthusiast has left an immeasurable footprint on pop culture, as a Grammy winning singer and Oscar winning actress. But she has also remained an enduring gay icon, inspiring generations of LGBT+ people through her advocacy following her son Chas Bono’s transition, provocative style and music and, really, just being Cher. For the uneducated, we send you out on your Cher education. In no time you too will believe in life after love *hangs head in shame*

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

by Jonny Stone @jonny_stone_ j.stone@tsaglasgow.com

LGBT+ HEROES ANYONE? Twitter imploded when the idea of giving Captain America his very own boyfriend was floated, just as fans have launched a campaign lobbying Disney to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend in Frozen 2. The case for LGBT+ heroes in mainstream cinema has never been stronger. A London–based advocacy group Shape History has launched its #LGBTSuperheroes campaign in an effort to inspire people to embrace diversity in what has become the most popular and in turn most lucrative genre in cinema. The group debuted a powerful video at Comic Con not only highlighting that LGBT+ characters like Catwoman, Iceman and Mystique have only been portrayed as straight in film but demonstrates exactly how gay heroes could translate on the big screen

(essentially like every other superhero movie). In a week where a lesbian couple might be featured in Finding Dory – a move that will see the first LGBT+ characters in a Disney film – how soon will we see a little more diversity in our superhero films? The queer superhero is relatively new even to comic books, following the disregard of the Comics Code Authority’s strict censorship which disallowed any explicit themes of homosexuality. But there are now many examples of LGBT+ representation in comic books; with diverse characters like Batwoman, X-Men’s Mystique, Rat Queens’ Braga and Young Avengers’ Wiccan, the progress that has been made in portraying queerness in an amplified and bombastic medium like comic books is promising. Queer presence and voices are important in a medium like comics, which can be tools for real social change. North Star, for example, from Alpha Flight is Marvel’s first gay superhero and came out in 1992, in the midst of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Marvel challenged loyal readers to become more compassionate and

tolerant towards those affected directly and indirectly by the virus. Comics and indeed their big screen adaptations are influential: by actively promoting diversity companies like Marvel have the ability to change the way we think about queer issues. And think about how many kids watch these films: whether a child sees a character just like them on the big screen, or a straight, cisgender child sees LGBT+ characters as total equals to their straight counterparts, diversity is a fail proof way of promoting equality. The progress of diversity in a broad sense has been slow in superhero films; Wonder Woman finally gets her own movie next year, like Black Panther will in 2018 and Deadpool became the most successful R-rated film of all time last year – even if they did underplay the character’s pansexuality. TV has made great progress in showcasing a varied range of queer characters and demonstrated that people don’t just accept but in fact embrace characters who don’t conform to traditional sexual or gender identities. Maybe a Batwoman franchise isn’t entirely out of the question. One thing to bear in mind is the need

to represent the diversity within our community; last month we reported a decrease in diverse LGBT+ representation in cinema last year. While the presence of LGBT characters remains roughly the same, according to GLAAD out of the 22 films featuring LGBT+ characters, only 25.5% were not white, as opposed to 32.1% last year; LGBT+ people of colour are thus not having their stories told on the big screen. We are always in need of refreshing characters that defy the male, heteronormative superhero archetype. With a readership and viewership as diverse as superheroes enjoy, companies must continue to represent readers form all walks of life and create superheroes we can see in ourselves.

MUSIC

Reading, much like Glasgow, is rich in its music history. Not only does the medieval city host one of the country’s best festivals each year, but bands like Pete and the Pirates, Sylosis and The Luminaries also once graced the city’s red cobbles. Also like Glasgow, Reading’s buzzing music scene is rife with bands gigging and recording, trying to make their names known. The Amazons had done just that, with the hugely successful single, ‘Junk Food Forever’ in 2015 (mixed by Catherin Marks who has worked with Wolf Alice and Foals). The track quickly gained a cult following which spurred the four piece to record some more fantastic singles. In such a short time; Matty (vocals), Joe (drums), Elliot (bass) and Joey (guitar) have worked their arses off to create some brilliant tracks which we cannot recommend enough! Catch the band at some great festivals this summer, they also play The Attic at The Garage this October. We spoke to Matt Thompson before their big summer line up:

Alton Towers Coach Day Trips from Scotland Visit Kingshousetravel.com for more information

You formed back in 2014, how did you guys know each other and come to form the band? “It was kind of a slow development over a couple of years actually. We were all in different bands in the Reading scene, and we just ended up coming together really. We were a band for a couple of years and then we lost our drummer, yknow we went through this horrible experience of trying out like eight different drummers before we found Joe, who was playing bass in another band. He did not look like a bassist, so we tried him. He came in, bashed the drums and it seemed to work really, it just clicked because he was the first guy to really smash the drums.”

What did you guys do before starting a band? “Well we’d all been playing in bands for the last decade, I think from when I was about eleven or twelve, yknow, on and off. School bands and stuff. We made the point not to go to university just so we could pursue bands, I suppose, but we had jobs to support ourselves. We were working at least at a couple of supermarkets over the years. We do this full time now, which is the best thing.” So it’s been a short time since you formed, and already you’ve gained a massive following. Did you expect your careers to launch so quickly? “It’s always different from the outside, yknow? When you’re in a band, you live in every hour with it. So every day that hasn’t gone well, it’s just a lot of hard work and you’ve just got to battle through – fight for every inch. I mean we’re a four-piece rock and roll band, it’s not like we’re unique or anything like that. There’s a lot of bands out there, a lot of really good bands so you almost have to fight for every gig.” What has been your favourite place to gig since you started? “I think festivals; festivals are definitely up there! Reading and Leeds last year were very good, we’ve also got a load of festivals this year which we’re really looking forward to. I think the furthest North we’ve got is Kendall Calling”

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

Your EP Do You Wanna launched in late 2015, and it was your ’ big break. What was the experience of working on the record like? Would you do anything differently? “Catherin Marks is who we recorded Did You Wanna? with, we’ll be recording the album with her over the summer. I think it’s important we were in the same studio, everyone knows each other and that’s just how we wanted it to be – we wanted to have the relationships already there. I think when you work with people regularly you get all the small-chat out of the way and a relationship develops. But in terms of doing things differently, I think we’ll just be in general making things different than we have before. Which is great! Did You Wanna? Went so well and we came back to Catherin with the new single and it again went well.” You supported The Kooks on a tour across Germany. Does it feel odd for you guys to have a following across the world when you’re pure Reading-lads? “Yeah it’s amazing, we still get messages from that tour which is unbelievable. It was February last year, in fact I’ve still got a couple of addresses which we’ll send letters to and stuff like Christmas cards, lyric sheets, CDs and stuff like that because they give us so much support. I think they really like us, they’ve got an appetite for English bands and Americans bands – being from Germany they might not get it as much as we do over here since we’re spoiled for choice. We’ve never seen that support replicated anywhere else, but maybe that’s because that’s the only mainland tour we’ve been around Europe – we’ve only been to England, Scotland and Wales since then. But yeah, more of that kind of thing would be amazing.” Summer is festival season – and you guys are lined up to play some fantastic shows. How excited are you to get started? “Yeah super excited, festival season is definitely what the whole thing is about for us. I think it’s because festivals aren’t like gigs, you don’t get a sound check you just get a line check so there’s so much scope for things to go wrong but when it goes right, it’s really cool. Like I said, Kendall Calling can be really cool; we just played Great Escape which was sick; we’re doing Festival Number Six in Wales; Why Not Festival so we’re really busy but it’s exactly the kind of thing we wanna do.” So someone comes up to you, and tells you that you can choose any one festival to headline this summer. Which would you choose and why? “Being from Reading, I think the first choice would be Reading Festival. It sounds cliché but we grew up there, and it shaped us as all the bands we seen there every year kind of shaped the way we listened to music – so to headline that one may be a long way away but it’s the ultimate goal. I think as well, Coachella looks really hot, and really cool and there’s usually a lot of chicks around so we wanna play Coachella it looks cool man. Glastonbury is another big one, but probably

Reading for the sentimental aspect of it. Definitely Reading.” So, two singles and an EP in 2015. Two more singles in 2016. All of them fantastic. Is there any thought on a full album yet? “Yes, basically the whole of April was taken up being in the studio working on the record for, I think it will probably be next year. I think it will be since we’re not ones to rush it out, we’ll be doing some extra recording at the end of the summer and we’ll see where we go from there. I think the skeleton is done, which is exciting. We just have to tour the hell out of it, just get out on the road nonstop for 18 months or whatever. So yeah that’s the update on the record!” Who are your favourite bands on the circuit right now? “This is why it was great to play Great Escape last weekend, because you get to meet up with loads of people you see on tour. Our label mates, a band called Palace, Big Moon are both awesome! There’s some great bands in Reading too, a band called Palm Honey, Sundara Karma, Haze and I think as well we’re all big fans of a band called Black Honey who are from Brighton – they’re really cool. Yeah there’s so many bands out there, like In Heaven who have been doing well recently and we played a couple of shows with them and they’re fantastic.”

MUSIC

THE SAY AWARDS THE LONGLIST REVEALED On Wednesday the 29th June, Paisley will play host to the Scottish Album of the Year Award, a prestigious competition aimed at rewarding the immense abundance of talent Scotland seems to produce so effortlessly. As dynamic as they are talented, here’s a quick overview of the longlist nominations…

YOUNG FATHERS

IAN MORRISON

An amalgamation of hip-hop and pop; lyrically astute and incredibly witty, White Men Are Black Men Too looks set to reach the same highs as its predecessors TAPE ONE and TAPE TWO, placing on both The Guardian and NME’s 2015 “Albums of the Year”.

With its gritty vocals, foreboding drum beats and moody atmosphere, Scottish Folk musician Ian Morrison manages to perfectly encapsulate the dark sombre atmosphere of the Outer Hebrides. Whilst previous albums have tended to pull Morrison towards a more optimistic, indie alternative style, Eas is a beautiful return to the melancholy.

WHITE MEN ARE BLACK MEN TOO

ANNA MEREDITH

EAS

DUNEDIN CONSORT

STEVE MASON

Dreamlike, triumphant and deeply moving, Steve Mason’s third studio album surley cements him as one of the finest songwriters working in the industry today. Meet The Humans is a wonderful juxtaposition; a fine balance of delight and depression in equal measure.

TIED TO THE MOON

BACH MAGNIFICAT

VARMINTS

C DUNCAN

Dynamic, intelligent, and resourceful, producer/composer Anna Meredith presents her own unique blend of contemporary classical; featuring an amazing mix of controlled percussion, zany synths, distorted guitar and acoustic instruments to create a sonically mesmerising, wonderfully disorientating assault on the senses.

ARCHITECT

Glasgow born C Duncan’s debut Architect presents an interesting mix of his very own captivating brand of psychedelic, dream cloud pop-rock and subdued melancholy, acting as a base layer for Duncan’s interweaving vocal harmonies to be layered neatly on top.

Under the watchful eye of John Butt, the Dunedin Consort have established themselves as the leading Scottish Baroque ensemble, and this – their performance of one of Bach’s most revered works: “Magnificat” – perfectly demonstrates the exquisite musicianship throughout the ensemble.

PRIMAL SCREAM

DJANGO DJANGO

BORN UNDER SATURN

JARLATH HENDERSON

Following the immense success of their previous self-titled debut album, Born Under Saturn presents an impressive return to form for Django Django. Never one to be restricted by genre, the album incorporates a plethora of styles: from psychedelic prog-rock, to easy going beach classics. Playful and jovial, Born Under Saturn is an ideal summer record.

Since becoming the youngest winner of the BBC Young Folk Award in 2003, Jarlath Henderson has continued to turn the traditional music scene on its head. His hotly anticipated debut album Hearts Broken, Heads Turned defies convention, opting to follow its own path, featuring brass, electronica and even beatbox, with outstanding results.

CHAOSMOSIS

After 30 years of producing, reinventing and innovating, it should come as no surprise that Primal Scream still maintain that ability to consistently churn out top quality music: Chaosmosis is exactly that. A well-polished soundtrack of Bobby Gillespie’s selfreflection, Chaosmosis incorporates all of the immensely enjoyable characteristics that made Primal Scream so successful.

AUNTY FLO

THEORY OF FLO Unquestionably one of the most interesting and compelling artists to feature on the list is Aunty Flo, presenting his album Theory of Flo, an engrossing blend of contemporary dance and traditional African music; described by him personally as “Afro-futurist”. The music explores and incorporates a variety of different cultures and languages to give a truly unique listening experience.

LAU

THE BELL THAT NEVER RANG After exploding onto the scene in 2007, Lau have gone from strength to strength, racking up three consecutive “Best Group” victories at the Folk Awards, earning a reputation as fierce innovators along the way. The Bell That Never Rang is a shrewd testament to that reputation: a beautiful mix of traditional accordions, acoustic guitars and jaunty fiddles, with the occasional surprise inclusion of distorted electric guitars. The Bell That Never Rang is a bold take on the Scottish traditional genre.

MIAOUX MIAOUX

SCHOOL OF VELOCITY With a bold and varied discography containing remixes from CHVRCHES to Belle & Sebastian, London-born Julian Corrie, aka Miaoux Miaoux has continued to impress since his inclusion in SAY 2013. This year’s effort, School of Velocity, is a gorgeous stramash of cheesy 80s synth, smooth vocals and irresistible hooks.

CHVRCHES

HEARTS BROKEN, HEADS TURNED

ADMIRAL FALLOW TINY REWARDS

After missing out on the SAY award 2013 with Tree Bursts in Snow, Admiral Fallow are back with their third studio album Tiny Rewards, the band’s most compelling, emotive yet sonically refined effort to date.

HECTOR BIZERK

THE WALTZ OF MODERN PSYCHIATRY

The Glaswegian synth trio are back with a collection of unapologetic pure pop bangers. Fresh from recent performances including Glastonbury, Coachella and Lollapolooza, Every Open Eye just oozes joy; a delightful medley of synthesizers, drum beats and Lauren Mayberry’s bubble-gum vocals. A superb sophomore album

In recent years, experimental hip-hop group Hector Bizerk have won fans and critics alike for their relentless drive to explore new territories. Despite originally being produced to soundtrack the Birds of Paradise Theatre Company‘s production of the Nicola McCartney play, Crazy Jane, The Waltz of Modern Psychiatry, with its punchy lyrics and hard-hitting realism possesses enough raw energy end material to stand on its own.

FFS

HUDSON MOHAWKE

FFS is the result of an audacious amalgamation of Glasgow’s kings of indie Franz Ferdinand and electropop super group Sparks, resulting in ridiculous fun and entertainment. The two groups work in perfect conjunction, never dominating, never shying away, resulting in an enthralling discopop masterpiece

As well as producing world-class beats for the likes of Kayne West, Drake and Lil Wayne, Ross Birchard also finds the time to produce music for his pseudonym Hudson Mohawke. In Lantern, we see an unfettered and unhinged producer with free reign, and the results are as intriguing as they are amazing with Birchard amalgamating pop, soul and electronica

EVERY OPEN EYE

FFS

MEET THE HUMANS

RACHEL SERMANNI In July 2015, Rachel Sermanni revealed her sophomore album Tied to The Moon to the world. Whilst her debut Under Mountains featured a collection of acoustic folk songs set with her Highland upbringing, Tied to The Moon is an earthy, grunge follow up, with distorted guitars laying the foundations for Sermanni to lay her rich, thoughtful vocals.

EMMA POLLOCK

IN SEARCH OF HARPERFIELD Since co-founding Chemikal Underground, Emma Pollock has managed to fashion a career as one of the most exciting alternative artists in Scotland. With her trademark sharp, insightful lyricism, In Search of Harperfield is a wonderful collection of deeply personal, yet hugely enjoyable songs.

THE REVENGE

LOVE THAT WILL NOT DIE Graeme Clark has been releasing music since 2004, however it wasn’t until April last year until the Glasgow DJ released his debut album Love That Will Not Die, a sensual masterpiece that was certainly worth the wait. Throughout, Clarke incorporates elements of progressive, disco and down-tempo house, blending them effortlessly, leaving us with an absolute masterpiece.

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

OF THE MONTH

It’s no great secret that Scotland’s music scene is a thing to be proud of. So we here at TSA have teamed up with Glasgow’s very own New Hellfire Club to bring you a monthly pick of who we think are doing epically well right now. Keep your eyes out for these up and coming bands. This is TSA and New Hellfire Club’s ‘Pick of the Month’.

BURIED SLEEPER HELLO BURIED SLEEPER! I HAVE TO SAY, WE ARE PRETTY EXCITED TO HAVE OUR FIRST DOOM METAL BAND ON THE POTM, BUT WE LIKE TO COVER ALL OUR MUSICAL BASES AT LEAST ONCE IN OUR MONTHLY INTERVIEW SEGMENTS, AND YOU GUYS HAVE A FEW FANS AMONG OUR VOLUNTEERS SO WE JUST HAD TO GET YOU INVOLVED. SO OPEN US UP THEN, AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? Bryce: For the uninitiated, we’re a fourpiece doom/stoner metal outfit, think Black Sabbath but slower. We’ve been a band for about 10 years now, but only really came into our own when we became Buried Sleeper with the release of our Colosseum album in 2012. We class ourselves as a doom or stoner metal band out of necessity rather than design; no one likes to pigeonhole themselves. WE’VE NOTICED A BIT OF A RESURGENCE OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS IN THE METAL WORLD, WITH BANDS THAT WERE NORMALLY SKIRTING (OR BLURRING!) THE GENRE EDGES, SUDDENLY BURSTING THROUGH AND GAINING MORE GROUND, AND FANS, IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME. DO YOU THINK IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT STYLES SUCH AS DOOM, STONER, AND DEATH METAL ARE BECOMING MORE MAINSTREAM THESE DAYS? (I HATE THE WORD ‘MAINSTREAM’, BUT I HOPE YOU GET WHAT I MEAN!) Bryce: I’d say it’s true that the more fringe genres are gaining popularity and I put this down to dissatisfaction with the mega venues, huge bands and the hefty price

IN PARTNERSHIP WIITH

tag that goes along with tickets, travel etc. Times are hard and I think people are reconnecting with their local venues. As demand increases, so too are the number of bands filling the burgeoning scene. Harry: I dunno about mainstream as such, but I do think there is a big fan base for metal that needs a bit more thought, and a little less youthful energy. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE NAME TOO, BURIED SLEEPER SOUNDS PRETTY STRANGE, WHERE DID IT COME FROM? IS THE NAME ITSELF INTERTWINED WITH THE ARTWORK YOU USED ON YOUR LAST ALBUM, AND IN YOUR ONLINE POSTER ART? Harry: That depends on who you ask, I prefer the more prosaic of the explanations, that the name is something that came to Bryce while walking an abandoned railway. Our artwork isn’t related to the name, at least, not in a deliberate sense from us, but we do love artists who’ll listen to the record and take bits and bobs of imagery from it to piece together something that looks amazing. Bryce: As we transitioned from our previous incarnation to Buried Sleeper we spent a long time coming up with a name. As Harry mentioned it does have rather prosaic origins but unless you know about that, then it means different things to different people. Ambiguity is something of a theme with most of what we do, which I suppose is an unintentional connection between the name and the artwork as people derive their own conclusions from it.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU GUYS MUSICALLY TO PURSUE DOOM METAL? IS IT A GENRE YOU ALL LOVE, OR DOES THE INSPIRATION COME FROM ELSEWHERE? Harry: I think it’s less a genre that we all love, and more a place we can find a lot of middle ground. As far as inspiration goes, I think it found us rather than the other way around. When we started the band I hadn’t listened to a lot of doom as such, but I got into it more and more as I was writing and it really started to show. There wasn’t anyone else who sounded like us locally, which kept us doing it, it’s more interesting that way. Bryce: Personally I was always into the slower, heavier side of metal and still am, but part of it came from being put on bills with hardcore, mathcore and death metal bands. Everyone started to sound the same and didn’t have much new to offer. No disrespect to those bands or those styles, but the faster and more aggressive the bands we played with were, the slower and heavier we got. I also think there’s more territory to be explored in this style of metal and there’s more scope to do interesting things. YOU GUYS HAVE SOME PRETTY MASSIVE SONGS IN YOUR REPERTOIRE, DOES HAVING SONGS AS LONG AS YOURS MAKE IT HARDER THAN USUAL TO FIND GIGS? Harry: Not any more than any other metal band I think, we just place two songs in 30 minutes rather than five or seven! Bryce: The song lengths aren’t the issue although it can be frustrating to travel somewhere and only get a half hour set, which for us is about a maximum of three songs! We’re actually pretty picky with the gigs we get because of logistics; we all

work odd hours and don’t live anywhere near each other anymore so a gig has to be worth our while before we’ll consider it, and by that I don’t necessarily mean in terms of making money, rather it has to be a good bill of bands we like or are in a similar vein. We often get asked to play “metal nights” with a death metal band and a screamo band... it just doesn’t fit. We’ve been around too long to take any old gig that gets thrown our way so we’re far more selective. YOU GUYS HAVE A MINI TOUR COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER, IS THIS A DIY TOUR, OR ARE YOU ON IT WITH OTHER ACTS? Bryce: We’re opening for a German band called Beehoover, who we’ve been fans of for years. However, there was never a plan to tour with them, we were approached by the promoter at each venue independently! Harry: Following around a band we love, called Beehoover. Really excited. TELL US WHAT THE REST OF THE YEAR HAS IN STORE FOR YOU GUYS THEN, ANY NEW RELEASES COMING OUT? ANY NEWS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US THAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YET? Harry: The only thing our fans can be sure of is that we release stuff the same way we write and play it; slowly, painstakingly and in our own sweet time! Bryce: All I can say is that we’re looking for gigs in the summer, preferably outside of Scotland for a change, and that we will continue the recording of our new album, which is about 90% complete in terms of material. Once it is completed, the plan is to have an album launch gig and perhaps organise some showcase gigs all over the UK. Thanks for chatting to us!

MUSIC

It’s all about Techno TOP EVENTS IN JUNE....

by Kieran Fisher Twitter:

@HairEverywhere_

k.fisher@tsaglasgow.com

GREEN VELVET, SWG3 (04/06) Given the moniker ‘The Godfather of Chicago House’ by his fans and peers, it goes without saying that Green Velvet is a legend in house music. With his funk-laden brand of electronic grooves, he’s garnered acclaim as both a DJ and producer since the early ‘90s. With tracks such as Preacher Man and Bigger Than Prince considered classics in house music, he comes to one of Scotland’s best raving venues fully equipped with dancefloor bangers. No other party in the entire country will top this one on the night. If you only have one night out this month, make it this bad boy.

BIGFOOT’S TEA PARTY, SNEAKY PETE’S (10/06) For only a fiver, you can enjoy one of Scotland’s most exciting club nights. Having recently announced a residency at Edinburgh’s techno hotspot Sneaky Pete’s, the Bigfoot lads will be dropping their techno bombs on dancefloors regularly for the foreseeable future. It’s cheap, dirty and hits the spot just nicely, and that’s all you need. While it’s going to become a staple of city nightlife in future, it’s worth popping along to pronto and experiencing the fuss first hand as often as you can.

TAMA SUMO, BERKELEY SUITE (10/06) Berlin’s Berghain nightclub is damn near impossible to get into. Notorious for its strict door policy, debauchery and parties deep into the next day, it’s become the stuff of legend in club tales. However, just because you might never have the chance to enter it, it doesn’t mean you won’t experience some of what it has to offer, as resident DJ Tama Sumo touches down in Glasgow’s Berkeley Suite this month. Want to know what all the fuss about Berghain is about? Then come get an idea of it by having one of its mainstays perform.

PALMBOMEN II, SNEAKY PETE’S (12/06) Dutchman Palmbomen II brings his hedonistic tropical vibes to Scotland to help us usher in the summer in style. With a style reminiscent of the analog-made halcyon days of house, this is the type of music that would be ideal listening on some exotic island with cocktails and escapism; but it’s also ideal for a night out as well, and not your conventional type of DJ set either. For those of you that like your music a little bit leftfield and almost alien (considering his main source of inspiration is The X-Files, that’s hardly surprising), then this is a gig you don’t want to miss.

ANIMAL FARM, ART SCHOOL (18/06) Embedded in Glasgow’s rich techno history, you will find some of Animal Farm’s DNA. The trio of Quail, Lamb and Turtle have been turning dancefloors inside out for the better part of a decade now, and it’s due to their consistently brilliant sets that they’ve remained a must see act for the entirety of their career. If you wrote a book on Scotland’s best parties, then Animal Farm would deserve their own chapter.

AGORIA, SUB CLUB (24/06) In addition to producing his own brand of melodic tech house, French sensation Agoria founded Nuits Sonores, one of the best European festivals, as well as the cutting edge record label Infiné in his native homeland. He’s also an acclaimed composer who has become an annual fixture at the Cannes film festival. However, if a night of partying is what you want, then he’s perfectly capable of conducting your dancefloor journey like you’re a puppet on his string. Agoria has remixed tracks for the likes of Moby, as he shares the same aesthetic for dance music with a soul. Not to be missed.

THE UNIT

The ascension of Glasgow’s next great clubbing experience

Techno and house music have been a benchmark of Glasgow’s music scene for 30 years, and the city is regarded as a world capital for underground electronic music. Following its conception in the ghettos of Chicago and Detroit during the 80s, it didn’t take long for Glasgow to get acquainted with the genre, in turn applying the voltage to the ripple effect that would spread throughout the UK and Europe shortly thereafter. Back in the day, the majority of raving happened in fields in complete defiance of the law, and contrary to public belief, it still happens on the sneak. But Glasgow was one of the first cities to embrace it, building a scene for it as a result. Through acclaimed and renowned club nights like Pressure at The Arches hosting top notch parties; to premier record labels like Soma releasing quality music; along with a legacy for continually producing some of the genres most respected artists, like Gary Beck and Harvey McKay to name a couple. To this day, Glasgow continues to be an enriched hotspot for this type of music. Glasgow is the beating heart of techno, but the scene is spreading. The city is never short of a good party somewhere – with a wide array of club nights pulsating the city’s clubbing veins every weekend – along with a number of raves, legal or otherwise, rearing their heads in outskirts. One such club night is The Unit, and it’s brilliant. Initially an afterhours party in an abandoned basement building in

a derelict industrial estate, – where a tenner at the door and all the Dug you can drink would see you raving until 7am – it would give partygoers a haven for jaw-chewing, sweaty shenanigans until daylight. Afterwards, they’d stumble into the street like it was a scene from Human Traffic set in the universe of Dawn of the Dead. However, it built from there, and the buzz – and a lot of hard work behind-thescenes – would see it ascend from dingy wee basements and find its way into some of the most popular nightlife denizens in the area. Founded by Stevie Muir, and backed by a crop of local DJ talent, The Unit filled a hole in North Lanarkshire’s gaping nightlife at a time when it really needed it, following the hiatus of the landmark So Loco nights – which proved to be an institution for a long time. So Loco was integral for turning local clubbers onto techno; guiding them towards the light, showing them that clubbing could be an experience beyond the myopia of David Guetta tunes, alcopops and duckface selfies in the toilets. These nights shone a spotlight on music that was unappreciated – and unheard – in an area unaccustomed to niche culture. However, the end of an era didn’t vanquish the raving spirit, and The Unit stepped up to fill the void. However, it was only a matter of time before the bright lights of the city came calling, and now The Unit is set to take Glasgow by storm.

Anybody can pitch an idea to a club and have their mates DJ. It tends to be that venues are open to anything if it’ll pull in the punters and make them a bit of dosh. But the ambitions of The Unit are much loftier, having already booked industry respected artists, while still giving the everyman DJs who helped build it a slot on the billing. The star of the show is the cherry on top of the techno cake, but it’s the lads that made it happen in the first place are the tasty sponge that gives you a good filling. Chances are you’ve already encountered many of the performers if you’re a frequent attender of gigs, as they’ve supported many top name DJs, as well as headlining their own at some of the cities hottest party spots. At the recent all day event in May, StreetRave founder Ian Bonney was one of a few acts to bring earth the shattering bass. StreetRave parties are a regular fixture in town, and have graced venues as big as the SWG3 on a regular basis. In addition, French techno sensation Ron Costa graced the decks at a recent after party (which still happen – just because they’ve went mainstream doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten where their roots lie either). Just think: one minute you’re showing up to an after party in a secret location expecting some good music, only to find that a big name is guiding your musical odyssey until sunrise. It’s like a little slice of Ibiza, only a stone’s throw away from your front door.

In addition to their Glasgow expansion, The Unit will also be represented at this year’s Loch Lomond Sound System. Every techno purist and avid party fanatic owes it to themselves to experience that at least once in their lifetimes – even if it’s just to enjoy the scenery. However, while raving in clubs is all fine and dandy, there’s just something more enjoyable about boat parties. With the next event due to be announced in the coming weeks, it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled, because it it’ll sell out faster than a Muse concert. The inception of this music was built on this type of grassroots mentality, in turn spawning a movement that would become an underground global phenomenon to this day. Events like The Unit are its backbone, and while they haven’t conquered the world yet, you can rest assured that a weekend spent at one of their events makes it a better place to live in, as you can leave your troubles behind and get lost in some euphoria with likeminded people. This type of passion and DIY attitude keeps the scene thriving and progressive, while spoiling us regular punters for choice on where to pick as our party destination. That being said, next time you see The Unit roll into town, make it your priority. You won’t regret it.

GIGS OF THE MONTH

A PREVIEW OF THE TOP GIGS GLASGOW & EDINBURGH HAS TO OFFER IN JUNE/JULY

s w e i v e r P

33

MAMMAL HANDS – THE HUG AND PINT (25/06) Mammal Hands are a trio of like-minded musicians: Nick Smart piano, Jesse Barrett drums and tabla, and Jordan Smart saxophones. Signed to Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana Records they have carved out a growing following both here and abroad for their hypnotic fusion of jazz, folk and electronica: winning fans from Bonobo and Gilles Peterson to Jamie Cullum and they have been compared to both Portico Quartet and GoGo Penguin(who the group have toured with) for the way in which they navigate the choppy waters between

FATHERSON – 02 ABC (04/06) Alternative-rock band from Glasgow, Fatherson, are known best for their distinct brand of soaring, melodic anthems. Having formed in 2010 at the age of 17, the band have been striking a resonant chord with crowds at home in Scotland these past three, four years. Two singles (‘Hometown’, and ‘First Born’) secured national support and airplay from Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe and Greg James. Catch them on 4 June at 02 ABC.

THE OFFSPRING AND BAD RELIGION – 02 ACADEMY (20/06) Two of rocks most exciting and enduring bands, The Offspring and Bad Religion have announced three UK shows for June including a date at Glasgow’s 02 Academy. The Offspring’s Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar), Noodles (guitar), Greg K (bass) and Pete Parada (drums) have performed over 1,100 shows across the globe and sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. Their 1994 release Smash remains the highest-selling album of all-time on an independent label. Among the band’s best-known hits are the rockanthems ‘Self Esteem,’ ‘Come Out And Play (Keep ‘EmSeparated),’ ‘The Kids Aren’t Alright’ and ‘You’re Gonna GoFar, Kid.’

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN – GU DEBATING HALL (13,14,15/06) Glasgow band Belle And Sebastian will perform a series of shows at the city’s West End Festival (WEF) as it marks its 21st anniversary this year. The group, formed in the city 20 years ago, will play Glasgow University Union debating hall on 13, 14 and 15 June. Their participation was announced as WEF organisers published the programme of events, which run from 3-26 June.

contemporary dance music and jazz. Drawing on a rich well of influences from Sufi and shamanic African trance music, Irish and Eastern European folk music, to Steve Reich and Philip Glass and more contemporary electronica influences, their music is built around deceptively simple sounding ideas that are lent power through the use of repetition and rhythmic loops. Their new album Floa will be released in may 2016. Mammal Hands will be at the Hug and Pint on 25 June.

BIG DEAL – KING TUT’S (07/06) It’s been a remarkable few years for Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe, the London-based duo better known as Big Deal. After meeting in 2010 when Kacey taught Alice some songs on guitar, the twists and turns of their on-going relationship has been documented via their catalogue of intense rock-pop songs. Having received widespread acclaim for their first two albums, 2011’s Lights Out and 2013’s June Gloom, the band were invited to join Depeche Mode on tour, which resulted in the band adopting a stronger, bolder attitude to making music.

THE BLIZZARDS – THE ELECTRIC CIRCUS (25/06) After a 6 year hiatus, The Blizzards are back with a bang. The Mullingar 5 piece have one hell of a summer planned. With a brand new single, an album in the works, and a UK tour planned for June. These power popchart toppers are obviously no strangers to the Irish music scene. Before the Voice of Ireland, and Niall Breslin’s solo and producing career, The Blizzards drew crowds of sincere music fans with their combination of catchy pop toe tappers and contagious beats to stages at Slane, Oxegen, Independence and TheOlympia.

ELECTRA MUSTAINE – KING TUT’S (29/06) Electra Mustaine is a singer/songwriter from Fallbrook, CA. However, like her father, she’s a bit of a rebel. She chose to make a name for herself in something completely different from what might be expected, something more true to who she is. Two words: Country music. To this day Electra has written with numerous writers including Phoenix Mendoza, Bryan White, Blair Daly, Nathan Chapman, Dave Pahanish, Kent Wells, and many more. She has written 40+ songs with numbers increasing daily.

MOVIES

FACT VS FICTION THE CONJURING This month, Ed and Lorraine are taking a trip to England to investigate something spooky – so we’re going back to their last adventure to see how much truth the film conveyed. This June, Ed and Lorraine Warren are back – this time we’re watching them investigate the Enfield Poltergeist in England. Back in the 70’s, Peggy Hodgson reported that her children had noticed furniture moving, and that they heard knocking sounds on the walls. A police man on the scene said he saw a chair move, but he wasn’t sure if it moved by itself or if it was pushed. Later, the children reported that they had heard demonic sounds. And this case came to be known as the Enfield Poltergeist, and will be featured in The Conjuring 2. But let’s go back to their first adventure, which The Conjuring is about – it’s the 70’s and the Perron family has just moved into a secluded farmhouse. Everything seems alright for about five minutes until the family dog ends up dead and one of Carolyn and Roger’s five daughters’ reports seeing a spirit who wants the family dead. That’s when Ed and Lorraine come in to see what’s really happening. Yes, this movie is based on true events but the word “based” is important here. What liberties did director James Wan take when he made this film to make it that bit spookier? Let’s see. 1 – The Real Bathsheba Sherman Bathsheba is one of the most terrifying spirits in the film. She was born Bathsheba Thayer in Rhode Island in 1812 and Judson Sherman. Judson was a farmer and Bathsheba was a housewife, and the fairly well off couple had a son together – Herbert, who was born when Bathsheba was roughly 37. Legend has it that Bathsheba was a witch. Of course there’s no evidence to prove it, but when a baby supposedly died in her care, townspeople believed that she killed the child as a sacrifice. Her name was cleared legally, as the courts couldn’t prove that she killed the baby, but rumours were still rampant. 2 – Ed and Lorraine Unfortunately, Ed Warren died in 2006, but his wife Lorraine is still alive and was there to advise director of The Conjuring James Wan on the actual events of the Perron family haunting. The paranormal investigators worked together on many very popular cases from the 70’s – they were involved in the stories behind films such as Annabelle,

The Amityville Horror, and obviously the Conjuring and its sequel. They also investigated the trial of Arne Johnson, who plead not guilty to killing his landlord on the grounds of demonic possession, and the Haunting in Connecticut, where they believed a former funeral home was infested with demons. The couple wrote several books together, such as Ghost Hunters: True Stories from the World’s Most Famous Demonologists, and Ed wrote a few books on his own, like, Werewolf: A True Story of Demonic Posession. Today, Lorraine runs the Warren’s Occult Museum with the help of her son-in-law, Tony Spera. 3 – the Perron Family According to a Q+A with Andrea and Cynthia Perron, strange and paranormal events actually started happening to the family around eight months before their mother actually found the house in which The Conjuring takes place. Andrea wrote a series of books about what happened in the farmhouse, and she started writing the books when supernatural events started occurring prior to the family moving in. On the hauntings, Andrea said, “When something like this happens to you, the memories are so real that they’re tangible. They can be literally triggered by a smell, a sight, a sound, a colour. And all of a sudden, you’re there. You’re right back in it. And when it was time to put this book trilogy together, it wasn’t even intended to be a trilogy; it was intended to be a single book and it grew, as we sat and we talked about it for hours and hours and hours.”

THE STUDENT ADVERTISER

The kids all couldn’t wait to move into the farmhouse and Cynthia described it as “a piece of heaven in a little spot of hell.” The Conjuring was endorsed by the Perron sisters and the actresses who portrayed the girls actually met their real life counterparts! The Conjuring 2 is in cinemas this month, on June 17.

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

MONEY MAKING OR SIMPLY ENTERTAINING Everyone has gone through the process of watching a highly popular and successful film that has gone on to produce additional sequels, prequels and television adaptations. The fact that the majority of successful films result in sequels is due to a couple of key reasons. From a logical perspective if you contributed to creating a box office hit then it only seems reasonable to return for the cinematic encore. There are plenty more financial benefits to be indulged if you were part of the cast, crew or studio. This gives every one part of the team the incentive to return. Apart from the obvious advantages financially, it is clear that some cinematic artists, directors and actors alike just do sequels for the sheer fun. This is to entertain their loyal fans with more of the same. It’s essentially giving back to those loyal fans that contribute towards that Hollywood superstars big fat paycheck. 20 years ago arguably the best science fiction film of the 90s was released. Independence Day, starring the Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith, this was his coming out party on the grand stage of film. He had just wrapped up finishing the hit comedy The Fresh Prince of BelAir and was ready for the big screen, which he conquered with a heroic and comic performance. The reason this is so relevant is because of course you will all know, Independence Day: Resurgence will be gracing our big screens this month, without Will Smith! Independence Day: Resurgence will however star Jeff Goldblum; who starred in the original alongside Will Smith, and is returning to establish a familiar connection with previous viewers. That’s what viewers like, familiarity. They genuinely appreciate previous cast members returning. That is why fans across the world rejoiced when Harrison Ford graced the screens during his spectacular performance as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. It’s why millions of his supporters are hyping the upcoming sequels Blade Runner 2 and Indiana Jones 5. These films are due to be released in 2018 and 2019. That is quite the wait, yet fans are happy to see Harrison Ford breathe life into these former glorious film franchises. Now although this will please his fans around the world, we can only wonder, is

the only reason Harrison Ford is willingly portraying these characters again is because he is receiving a significant amount of money? He transformed these characters into icons, yet is his major motivation making money? That is one of the fascinating aspects of sequels. The drive behind them is to cash in as soon as possible, yet the above films have all taken their sweet time to be released, over 20 years to be exact. Other popular sequels that are noticeably rushed are the later Harry Potter films. But that didn’t ruin the world of wizards; it is still one of the highest grossing film franchises of all time. The upcoming prequel Fantastic Beasts will please the hearts of loyal book readers. It hasn’t been rushed so there is hope for it yet. A clear example of high budget rushed films is personified by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their films are essentially a hit or a miss. Yet every major decision is fuelled by Disney’s complete domination of film franchises and by their unstoppable money making methods that will likely never end. They have the cash to keep on funding films and their profits aren’t likely to decline any time soon. Disney will keep on making money while entertaining millions. Sequels are like a second date, it’s guaranteed to be more expensive than the first. However expectations are high. So if you fail to deliver the highest standards that are expected of you then you might not get a call back. It’s the truth in my opinion; certain films that don’t have sequels are some of the greatest of all time. Fight Club and The Departed for example stand alone as two of the greatest pieces of cinematic art that have been preserved by the creators and cast members. Maybe it should be kept that way to truly appreciate film. It’s highly unlikely that this will be done by major studios or A list actors; as long as they cash the cheques and the fans keep praising them then sequels will be produced until the end of cinema, which will be never. Fans urge for more and are rewarded with sequels, while the artists are rewarded with the fans money. The entire purpose of sequels will never change, forever will they be making money and entertaining fans. by Billal Rahman billsblog2015.wordpress.com

IT’S THE YEAR OF THE SEQUELS ONE’S TO WATCH OUT FOR OVER THE COMING MONTHS TRANSFORMERS 5

RINGS

What else can really be said about Michael Bay’s never-ending Transformers franchise that hasn’t been said before. While the first film was pretty good, they quickly rectified that with it’s 1,000 sequels! Bay has promised that this next one would be his last time directing a Transformers movie so... ah, we’re not even going to get our hopes up. Transformers 5 (as yet untitled) is set to land in 2017.

Paramount’s The Ring franchise is coming back with a vengeance. Rings is set 13 years after the events of The Ring, centering on Holt (Alex Roe), who suddenly becomes distant from his girlfriend (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) after watching a mysterious video tape. We can all guess what happens next. The film is due for release this October.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE

The first Ice Age was one of the stronger animated films not from Disney or Dreamworks – while it borrowed from better movies like Shrek and Monsters Inc., it was still a fun ride. However, the franchise has dipped in quality with each successive instalment. Because of that, we’re not looking forward to the upcoming Ice Age 5, subtitled Collision Course, which sees a meteor heading for Earth – caused by hungry squirrel-rat Scrat. Who is in space. For some reason.

THE PURGE 3 After the two low-budget hits The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy arrived in backto-back years in 2013 and 2014, some thought Blumhouse may have another Paranormal Activity franchise on its hands, with a new movie coming out every year. However fans were forced to do without the annual Purge last year, but the franchise will return this month with The Purge 3. After choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Barnes has become head of securtiy for senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.

JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK Production is still under way on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, a follow-up to the hit 2012 adaptation Jack Reacher. Tom Cruise is back as the title character, who returns to the headquarters of his old unit, only to find out he’s now accused of a 16-year-old homicide. The sequel is based on the Lee Child novel of the same name, which is the 18th novel in his long-running Jack Reacher series.

BAD SANTA 2 13 years after Billy Bob Thornton cursed his way into our hearts with the outrageous holiday comedy Bad Santa, his title character is back this fall with Bad Santa 2. Production is scheduled to begin in January, with Billy Bob Thornton returning as the foul-mouthed Willie Soke, alongside Tony Cox as his partner Marcus and Brett Kelly as Thurman Merman. We can only imagine what Willie has been up to since the events of Bad Santa, but after an incredibly lengthy development process, thankfully we’ll get to find out soon enough.

STILL SHOWING IN CINEMAS

PICK OF THE MONTH

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE A fun fact about Emmerich, he was a director that respected the idea of practical effects over the heavy use of CGI. In fact the original Independence Day used model cities and ships for the massive scenes of alien destruction. It made for both some stunning and iconic scenes. This new dollar burning instalment though has made huge and excessive use of computer generated effects. From its trailers alone it looks like the literal representation of CG if it were in the 60’s and full of free love and LSD.

BAD NEIGHBORS 2

Is this necessarily bad? Well it depends. Visually some scenes look grandiose and full of spectacle. Other points however it looks a bit too much and jarring. Having the alien craft no longer as models also takes away from their unique and awesome design which they have in the original film. Another issue which this film really shouldn’t do is its possibility of being a two part film or at least another sequel due after this one.

If you liked the first film, it’s a pretty safe bet you’ll be into the sequel – it’s essentially the same idea, except this time a sorority moves in next door and Zac Efron’s on team adult. It’s definitely a sharper film in that it doesn’t feel quite as all over the place and we’d also happily call it funnier than the original.

X-MEN APOCALYPSE

by Ryan Connolly r.connolly@tsaglasgow.com

“They’re coming back!” Yes indeed they are. For years there has been talk, rumour and speculation as to an Independence Day sequel and in the year of 2016 we finally have one. Everyone’s favourite city destroying megalomaniac Roland Emmerich returns to direct the sequel to his box office destroying hit, Independence Day: ID4. Now whether or not you like his films or not, if there’s one thing Emmerich doesn’t lack it is destruction on an almost silly scale. I don’t think any of us will soon forget Woody Harrelson ranting about government conspiracies while absolutely out of his mind fascinated by Yellowstone erupting. Best cameo ever?

Aside from some time spent head-scratching and trying to work out the muddled story we were pretty keen on the latest entry in the mutant franchise. The thriving School for the Gifted Student setting was a highlight, in fact if there were a TV series about the school for young recruits we’d be firm fans.

THE NICE GUYS

What can we expect? Well lots of aliens and stuff blowing up! And more I suppose. The film is set chronologically within our timeline. The aliens invaded in 1996 and now we find ourselves 20 years later into the future and Earth has adopted the aliens technology to better prepare ourselves just in case a sequel happens – I mean the aliens come back. The moon has been converted to a forward frontline base and Earth itself is covered in alien powered defences such as listening posts and enormous gun batteries. Something tells me none of them will be of any use. In all honesty I would be lying if I said the idea of using alien technology to bolster our own against pesky invaders wasn’t cool as shit. It is very! This does bring us to a slight concern though. Such a massive film with so much going on in it is relying heavily on CGI which could make it pale in comparison to its predecessor which used a lot of practical effects to achieve its awe and wonder.

Now one sequel following after the events of an alien invasion film and repeating what has come before it a little bit much I would say other than providing a kick of nostalgia and basic blockbuster fun. Two sequels though? That’s really pushing it. What can we look forward to though? I am not saying the movie will be bad. I mean it has Jeff Goldbluum back as well as a couple of other returning cast members such as Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner. The Goldbluum was the 90’s to me. If for anything I look forward to some over the top alien destruction and fun ass kicking, despite the lack of Will Smith. Which brings us to the new faces of Earth’s resistance force. What can be deduced is that this film wants to introduce a new generation to the excitement and fun that the first film had. It’s time for the kids to kick ass after their parents. Jessie Usher will be playing the son of Will Smith’s character while another newcomer in the form of Maika Monroe plays the daughter of Bill Pullsman’s character. Liam Hemsworth is also cast as a major lead role but won’t be the child of anyone we know. Will it be a box office hit though like Jurassic World or will it flop? The original Independence Day was the highest grossing film of 1996, bringing in over 300 million dollars. Adjusted for inflation and that technicality, that’s just over 500 million dollars nowadays. I’m not saying it will break a billion like Captain America: Civil War did but it has the potential to be a box office hit as its only real competition maybe the new Nicholas Winding Refn’s Neon Demon. I don’t know if even the director of Drive can triumph over this new alien menace. Independence Day: Resurgence is in cinemas 23rd June.

Book Corner WILDE LAKE The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe is without a doubt what makes this film worth a watch. Gosling’s comic timing is spot on and he puts on a brilliant performance as a struggling private in 70s LA, which generally makes for a brilliant era to set a film in.

The New York Times bestselling author, Laura Lippman, is back with a novel that aims to challenge our notions of memory, loyalty, responsibility and justices in this complex story about a long-ago death that is now haunting the newly elected, first female, state’s attorney of Howard County and her family.

EVERYONE BRAVE IS FORGIVEN In this bestseller, the day the war is declared in 1939, three lives were brought together and changed forever during World War II. This stunning novel features little known history and a wartime love inspired by the real-life love letters of the author’s grandparents.

DON’T YOU CRY For her third novel, bestselling author Quinn Collins uses a dual narrative to focus on an a young woman, Quinn Collins, her elusive roommate, Esther, and an 18 year old man called Alex Gallo. When Esther disappears, this psychological thriller kicks into gear and transforms into a very smart, almost addictive page turner about the immense difference between suspicion and obsession.

DAWN OF WAR III ANNOUNCEMENT

It has been over a decade. 12 years to be exact since Relic brought the world the very first game in the Dawn of War franchise. Based on Games Workshops Warhammer 40,000, the Dawn of War series was a hallmark achievement of gaming; not just for bringing us the grim darkness of the 41st millennia to the PC gaming scene but doing it so much justice while also being a well crafted real time strategy game that made a name for itself and the company of Relic entertainment. In 2009 Relic then brought us the long awaited sequel to one of the best selling RTS franchises of all time: Dawn of War II. With a new shiny engine and a race, long requested by fans, having been added now that the engine could handle the effects required, Dawn of War II was set to once again take the RTS world by storm. Which it both did and didn’t. Sadly the player count dropped significantly, a lot of the first game’s loyal players having left to play StarCraft 2, having become disenchanted with the mechanical decisions that were taken with the game such as the major removal of base building which has always been core to most RTS titles. The game was critically praised though and I for one fell in love with the smaller scale battles and the lack of having to build a base. The game gave you the units and threw you right into the action, not to mention it was bloody gorgeous. In 2011 though disaster loomed as Relic launched its final expansion for Dawn of War II titled ‘Retribution’. Another great addition to this title but overshadowed by the inevitable fall of THQ as the company in charge of Relic finally went into administration. The future looked dark for Relic and the Warhammer license which they still held. Fortunately, SEGA stepped in and purchased Relic for a hefty price, showing the importance and power of Relic’s franchise. The Dawn of War franchise however was thought to have been no more as their website went quiet and rumour of a lot of their staff having been let go was

BATTLEFIELD VS CALL OF DUTY: THE BATTLE OF THE FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS

afoot. Relic was still alive though. After about a year or two of limbo the sequel to their other franchise (a WW2 based RTS) Company of Heroes was announced. So it was that Company of Heroes 2 came while nothing was said about Dawn of War or the Warhammer licence. 2011 became 2012 which bled into 2013 and nothing came of it. At the end of 2015 though, Relic started to become active on the Dawn of War webpage, updating it and creating a new forum. A few months later a post on reddit claimed that SEGA had bought the domain name Dawn of War III. The company didn’t confirm or deny this. Once again fans and old school players were left wondering just what the hell was going on. On the third of May 2016 however, Relic posted a new photo on both their social media sites and Dawn of War homepage. Later that day, a video appeared. After five years I sat in front of my computer trying not to shake. I’ll be honest I don’t think I could have had a cheesier grin on my face than the one that I had at that moment. I clicked play. Music blared, dark and triumphant, blood everywhere. A Space Marine appeared. Then a larger Ork. Suddenly, towering above them moved an enormous cloud dispersing figure. An Eldar Wraith Knight. A titan above the battlefield. Pelted by gunfire its Space Marine counterpart charged towards it, pulling out a huge mechanical chainsaw from its body and plunging it into the bone like skeleton of the Eldar titan as a tiny Space Marine watched from below at the magnificence of what was going on. I got carried away. What you must understand though is that this is the return of a game franchise the equivalent of what a Game of Thrones series is to those who watch it. Dawn of War III is due out in spring of 2017 and I can’t wait to revisit the grim darkness of the 41st millennia, for in it there is only war... by Ryan Connolly r.connolly@tsaglasgow.com

Every year, round about this time, game publishers take their turns lifting the veil on their latest games; bigger, flashier and promising more bang for your buck. It’s an annual courtship for your hard earned dollar. Two companies in particular are rivals matched in a heated contest to be the best. Activision and Electronic Arts (EA) to be precise. With Activision’s flagship title Call of Duty and EA’s war-game simulator Battlefield both on the PR train it’s now a better time than ever before to compare the two First Person Shooters. First to show off their work, as eager as a child who finger painted the family cat, was Activision/Infinity Ward’s latest title, Call of Duty: Infinite. The trailer was uploaded to YouTube on May 2nd, and has since received a whopping 2.6 million dislikes, setting the record for the most disliked gaming video ever. You can see why, though. It’s an awful trailer. Setting up lackadaisical action-drama scenes in the first act then transitioning into a cheesy space battle in the trailers closing sections. What’s worse, the entire thing is set to a horrendous cover of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’. However, this is just a trailer after all and we are yet to see any actual gameplay footage. But this is a CoD game, and we know what to expect after all: a twitchy-arcade shooter with an emphasis on multiplayer replayability – it’s a tried and tested formula which has changed little since the game’s defining moment in 2007, with Call of Duty 4. It’s not all negative on the CoD camp however. After all, this is a game series which defined a generation, brought gaming to the forefront of YouTube and generated an eye watering amount of money over its long life. It’s a game series which broke records and got so much further than anyone else ever

imagined. It may be a flawed game, but one thing is for sure – gamers love Call of Duty, no matter what they say. In the other corner of the ring is EA, with their champion title Battlefield. The trailer for the latest in CoD’s biggest rival was released on May 6th, just few days after the PR disaster Infinite Warfare suffered. Juxtaposing its rival, fans were delighted to see the franchise change their game drastically, taking the triple-A shooter back to WW1 for the first time. The trailer was well received by fans, with over one million likes in just a few days and numerous in depth analysis videos dissecting the trailer for WW1 references like infamous battles, the Red Baron and the legendary American squadron: The Harlem Hellfighters. So before we even see some actual gameplay, it’s safe to assume which game fans are going to pour themselves over this year. One thing this year’s Call of Duty title does have going for it however, is the addition of a remastered version of the series’ classic, Modern Warfare, the game which defined not only the franchise but also the FPS genre. Great! You may think, but there’s a catch. Infinity Ward will only sell you the remastered game if you buy a special copy of ‘Infinite Warfare’ which is priced at a heafty £80 – they also promise this is the only way you can get the game. So no waiting until months in to get it on the cheap unfortunately. No matter what you choose this year, whether that be for the quick reflex demanding Call of Duty or strategic-battlesim, Battlefield, you’ll be getting your money’s worth as both games will span the rest of the year. Or until just after a week and you and your mates get tired of killing each other.

WHAT’S ON IN THE INDIE GAMING CALENDAR

Divinity: Original Sin 2

the release of this one at this stage is it will come later this year.

When most people think of video games, they think of the big ‘Hollywood’ titles in gaming; your Call of Duties, Assassins Creeds, Halos etc. If you look beyond the surface of the big budget titles, though, you’ll find a whole new creative sphere of gaming – but just where should you start when it comes to sampling the Indie market? Generally, if you know what you’re looking for, you’ll find it. However, if you don’t, then here are some of the top indie games to keep an eye out for in 2016. First up we have the FPS No Man’s Sky from Hello Games. No Man’s Sky is one of 2016’s most ambitious titles as you play as an interplanetary explorer doing just that, exploring. Players are given free reign to explore the game’s universe which consists of 18 quintillion planets (quintillion, is correct dear reader) to explore and catalogue. Players will explore new worlds, fight to survive on them, and upload all their findings to the universally shared atlas for other players to see before moving on to the next world, all the while interacting with computer controlled space factions and trading at space ports. So, if you’ve always wanted to explore distant worlds, without the whole never seeing your family and friends again thing, then this will be perfect. No Man’s Sky launches in June. Do you like alternate history? Do you like survival games? Do you like dystopian tales where society revolves around an antidepressant drug and a hive-like attitude to attacking those who don’t want to join in? Then you’re in luck (and have a very niche taste) with Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few. Set in alternate 1960s England, in the city of Wellington Wells, as a ‘downer’, a member of society refuses to take the happy drug ‘joy’ which the rest of society is addicted to in order to forget about ‘the very bad thing’ they did to get the Nazis out of England. You must survive long enough to escape the city and be free of the twisted junkie society that inhabits it. In

For those who enjoy a good dungeon crawl (oi, minds out the gutter) then Below might be just the thing for you. The game takes place from a top down perspective as you play as a small warrior attempting to explore the depths of an island. The game falls into the roguelike sub-genre which translates to ever-changing environments that will lead to perma-death if they get you. It’s not as harsh as the Souls series but promises to be brutal yet fair. The game will release later this year.

No Man’s Sky

order to do this, you must sneak and steal supplies, but be aware that if you raise too much suspicion, your fellow citizens and the police will force you back on the happy drug. Players can blend in by taking small doses of ‘Joy’ but be careful you don’t take too much and forget your goal. We Happy Few is set for release in June. If you want a return to the days when platforming was king, when you would spend hours trying to collect that one item that was placed in the most confusing location, just so you could unlock the next level, then Yooka-Laylee might be just the remedy you’re looking for. Players take control of a Chameleon named Yooka and a bat named (you guessed it) Laylee as they team up to stop Capital B and Dr. Quack from turning all the world’s literature into pure profit. Developed by Playtonic games, a team which features key members from Rare during the Nintendo 64 era, the game will be a homage of sorts to the games of

the era with elements from classics such as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. As the game progresses, players can buy new abilities as well as upgrade them, again like its predecessors. All in all, the game promises to be a lot of fun and will be out in October. If you always thought the old cartoons of the 1930s could have used a bit more of a side scrolling platforming shooter element then you are in for a treat with Cuphead from Studio MDHR. You play as the titular Cuphead, an unfortunate individual who, after making (and losing), a bet with the Devil, spends the game trying to pay what he owes by fighting a series of bosses. The game’s artistic design is inspired by cartoonists of the 1930s, such as Max Fleischer, and plays in the same vein as traditional side scrolling run and gun games, except players have unlimited lives and keep weapons after death, and it will feature a co-op mode. All we know about

One of the bigger budgeted games on the list is Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, which has been described as an ‘independent AAA’ game. In other words, it will have all the budget of the big games without the interference that comes with it. It is based on Celtic myth and revolves around the character of Senua as she makes her way through a hell that his brought about by a severe case of psychosis that warps the world around. An interesting point to note is that this will be one of the first big budgeted games that will directly attempt to deal with the issue of mental illness. Not too much is known about gameplay apart from the fact it will deliver deep character in a twisted world alongside brutal uncompromising combat. The game is due for release later this year. A final game to look out for is Divinity: Original Sin 2, the sequel to the 2014 original. As with most RPG games you can choose and build your character, but furthermore can recruit up to three companions to assist you in stopping the Bishop Alexander. The game will change quests depending on your characters background, and it will feature a cover system as well as love/hate system for determining interactions with other characters. SPORTS

EDINBURGH CITY SET TO RISE THROUGH THE RANKS Things were, to say the least, tense, at Ochilview, as Dougie Gair stepped up to take a penalty in the 87th minute. Edinburgh City had drawn 1-1 with East Stirlingshire in the first leg of the League Two Playoff Final, and with the score poised at 0-0 in this second leg, if the penalty was converted, City would be within three minutes of admission to the professional leagues for the first time in their history. And converted it was. Emphatically. Unbelievable scenes followed at the referee’s whistle for full time, confirming that Edinburgh City would be the first team to take advantage of the new playoff system and gain promotion from the amateur ranks to the SPFL League Two. Prior to the new playoff system, there was effectively no relegation from League Two, and as such, no direct way to gain entry to the professional leagues. However, the SPFL finally decided to take action in the summer of 2013, in order to make the amateur leagues more competitive and give incentive to teams such as East Stirlingshire, who it has to be said have become infamous for their regular underperformance, to avoid the bottom spot. Each year since the introduction, the winners of the respective Highland and Lowland Leagues face off over two legs; with City this year dispatching of Cove Rangers; and the winner of this tie faces the bottom side in League Two. Unfortunately, the defeat to Edinburgh signifies the end of East Stirlings’ 61 year association with the professional leagues, and

they will now take Edinburgh’s place in the Lowland division. But for Edinburgh, who have won the Lowland league the last two years, and indeed the wider context of Scottish Football, it is a very positively significant moment in history. It means that there will now be three Edinburgh based teams in the professional leagues for the first time since Meadowbank Thistle rebranded as Livingston 21 years ago; and it is interesting to note that City now play their home fixtures at the former home ground of Meadowbank – aptly named “Meadowbank”. City will join Hearts and Hibernian in the professional divisions, and while it will be a long time before they can dream of league competition with the two giants of Scottish Football, who reside respectively in the top two leagues, it gives the Meadowbank side something to strive towards. City will also be motivated by the recent successes of Inverness and Ross County, who

NOT ONE TO MOONWALK AWAY FROM…

ARE YOU READY TO WALK OVER THE MOON THIS JUNE?

Get fit, raise awareness, save lives – this is what you can achieve by moonwalking this summer. Walk the Walk is a charity that raises money for vital breast cancer causes. Since the charity first came about in 1996, it has invested millions of pounds into Scotland to help those who are suffering from cancer. 20

years ago, just 13 women walked through New York City in their bras to raise some awareness for breast cancer. This was a one off event that bloomed into a multi-million pound charity. So, what’s this about a moonwalk? Well, if you’re over the age of 10, you can powerwalk a New Moon which is 6.55

are both relatively new on the scene, but have skyrocketed their way through the leagues to the top division. What’s more is these sides did it while based in areas far less densely populated than Edinburgh. A far larger potential fanbase, should they hit the ground running, is something which could no doubt help Edinburgh find their feet and begin to evolve and work their way up the leagues. Manager Gary Jardine said: “You look at what the likes of Ross County and Inverness have done since they came into the league. We just want to find our level, but we’re in a huge city with loads of people in it so there’s no reason why we can’t grow and evolve. “It will take time to increase the fanbase, but Edinburgh as a city has an ever-increasing population. People who come to the city who don’t have an affiliation to Hearts or Hibs should come along to Meadowbank because we play a good brand of football and score lots of goals. I think we’ll be able to get good attendances for League Two. “We’re a forward-thinking club who

miles; everyone who is 13 or older can walk the 13.1 mile long Half Moon, or the Full Moon Marathon which is 26.2 miles long. Want to go that extra mile, to the moon and back? Everyone over 18 years old and over can opt to participate in the Over the Moon Challenge, which is 52.4 miles long. Edinburgh’s Moonwalk will take place in the historic Holyrood Park for the charity’s 20th birthday, and there will be a wild Scottish party to celebrate! Get the tartan ready for a night to remember. Walk the Walk asks all of those entering the marathon to raise a minimum of £100, however you can. The New Moon walk is a new, exciting addition for the moonwalk, and it’s perfect for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to walk any longer than the 6.55 miles, and it means that now kids between the ages of 10 and 13 can also get involved in raising money and awareness for the cause. The Over the Moon walk, however, is only for those 18 and over who really want a challenge! This involves completing the moonwalk twice in just 14 hours. Challengers will be recognised by a special cap and walker number, which will help

promote our own players. We do things the right way. For example, we kept our prices at £5 for the first leg of the play-off. We’re not a wealthy club, but we can offer lots of other things to players. We’ve got good players here but because we’re in the central belt and we’re in League Two, that will make it easier to attract more good players.” Their ideal central belt location and large potential fan base in the capital city, combined with the fact that teams who have found themselves admitted to the league through the back door in the past tend to do well; namely Inverness, Ross County, and to a lesser extent Annan Athletic; mean that City are a team with the potential to really make waves in Scottish football in the future. However, while the future looks bright for City, they have matters to attend to in the short term. The newly revamped League Cup sees them land in a tough group as the bottom seed, with Hamilton Academical, St Mirren, Livingston and Ayr United; meaning their first competitive game as an SPFL side will take place on 16th July against one of these four sides. While it’s about as tough of a group as they could have imagined, it will without a doubt be a challenge that the players will very much be looking forward to; an opportunity to test themselves against the highest standard of players most of the City squad will ever have faced; and one for which there is no better replacement for the purpose of getting themselves ready for the rigours of league business in August. So, if you’re in or around Edinburgh and looking for a match to go to at the weekend this forthcoming season, there’s no better value for money than at Meadowbank. Prices will be some of the cheapest in Scotland, and you can be sure the goals will flow. by Robbie Copeland Twitter:

volunteers spot them from regular walkers, and they will also get two medals! One for completing the Full Moon, and another for the challenge. With the money Walk the Walk has raised, this charity has helped the likes of Maggie’s Care Centres in Scotland, which are manned by cancer support specialists, benefit advisers, nutritionists and psychologists, which grants all round support for patients going through their treatment. The Western General Hospital in Edinburgh has also received funds from Walk the Walk which helped renovate their breast ward and Mammography unit, as well as building a new operating theatre. There will also be a moonwalk in London next year, which is bound to generate thousands of pounds for the cause. Interested in participating in the Moonwalk? Grab those moon boots and get walking then – the Moonwalk is perfect for anyone of a variety of ages and ability. There’s something for everyone, so anybody can help raise awareness, and most importantly, save lives. by Holly Fleming Twitter:

JUNE 2016, ISSUE 22

SWAT UP ON YOUR GAME!

WIMBLEDON IS NEAR! It’s nearly Wimbledon time again. The time of year when most of Britain drops everything for a few weeks and becomes a collective super-fan of a sport we generally couldn’t give a toss about as a nation all year round. It’s pretty much always been a big deal over here, Wimbledon, for as long as I can remember anyway. Over the last few years, though, with the prominent rise of Scotland’s vested interest, Andy Murray, it’s become something of a point of pride both north and south of the border for many. Three years have passed since Murray united the nation and lifted the trophy as the first Brit to do so since Fred Perry in 1936. Since that day in 2013, a lot has changed in the landscape of men’s tennis. The great Rafael Nadal has fallen from prominence, and the stranglehold that tennis’ ‘big four’ – Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Murray – once had on the game has been more regularly broken, with the likes of Wawrinka and Cillic winning Grand Slams, the former edging his way into the top four of the ATP rankings ahead of Nadal. The last few years have truly been a transition into a new era of tennis, and the great ongoing narrative that was once Federer vs Nadal has been replaced at the top of the game by Murray and Djokovic. And it’s the latter of the equation who has been the one constant since Murray last won the ‘big one’ so to speak. Remarkably, Novak Djokovic has won five of the ten Grand Slam tournaments that have taken place since, and goes into this year’s Wimbledon as the undisputed world number one, and as clear a pre-tournament favourite as there has ever been. The guy, if you can still refer to him in mortal terms, has really been on fire. It could be said, then, that Andy Murray is unlucky to be in tennis at the same time as Djokovic in the same way that Cristiano Ronaldo is unlucky to be in football at the same time as Lionel Messi; if it wasn’t

It’d be fair to say Wimbledon is a pretty popular event, what with the 9.2 million viewers of last year’s men’s singles final and all. However, securing tickets for the event is notoriously tricky (and expensive) so it’s generally something the average tennis fan watches at home or the pub.

for the other, one would without a doubt have conquered the sport. The pair have had some excellent matches, and are exactly the same age to the year. Head to head, though, Djokovic has generally had his number. In fact, since Murray defeated Djokovic to take the Wimbledon final in 2013, he has yet to beat Djokovic in a Grand Slam match. It’s this feud that makes Wimbledon such an unmissable event this year; the latest chapter in an ongoing feud for the ages. Who doesn’t love a Scottish underdog? Of course, though, there is much more to the event than Murray and Djokovic. It’s not even guaranteed that the two will cross paths at any point along the line, as Wimbledon is not a tournament traditionally bereft of shock wins. Who could forget Rafael Nadal bowing out to unseeded German Dustin Brown in the second round of last year’s tournament, or to Nick Kyrgios in the fourth the year prior? Stanislas Wawrinka will be looking to add to the accolades collected during his incredible resurgence over the last two years, and iconic world number three Roger Federer, who has maintained such a high standing despite no Grand Slam wins since Wimbledon 2012, is surely due to finally reverse his Grand Slam Final voodoo before too long. If the men’s singles look set to be unpredictable, though, you better sit down before tuning into the women’s event. Since 2010, there have been 11 different female Grand Slam winners. However,

only one of those 11 has been a constant throughout, and her name is Serena Williams; winning eight of the 25. Serena has won a remarkable 21 Grand Slam trophies since her breakthrough 1999 US Open win, the third highest of any woman ever. There was a time when her and her sister Venus pretty much were women’s tennis, and between them have won Wimbledon 11 times since the turn of the century. That time is gone, however, as Venus hasn’t won a Grand Slam since 2008, being replaced with the current open book of women’s tennis. Big names like Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Ranwanska will all fancy their chances of taking the women’s singles title, and Angelique Kerber, who finally clinched her first Grand Slam earlier this year in the form of the Australian Open will undoubtedly be high on her confidence. So, whether you’re a fan of tennis, sports in general, heartwarming underdog stories, or just cheering on the Scottish guy, then hop on the bandwagon before the wheels get running, as Wimbledon will have something for you during its two weeks from 27th June to 10th July. BBC will have all the coverage as usual, and if you’re feeling inspired to get a closer look then a limited number of tickets are still available from the Wimbledon website. by Robbie Copeland Twitter:

HOMELESS WORLD CUP COMES TO GLASGOW

We may not have the European Championships to boast about within Scotland this Summer, but we have something that could arguably be better entertainment - the Homeless World Cup. With no major footballing tournament for our immediate focus there is no excuse to have anything else to do on the 10-16 July. It is only June at this point, but there is no harm in hyping a great event and involving something a lot of the city loves – football

– and gives you something to feast upon in between the gap between Euros, the start of the 2016-17 season and Scotland’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers starting in September as the country’s focus turns to the Auld Enemy. This year’s event takes place in the country for the second time, and for the first time in Glasgow, as it reaches its 14th year of the event which we have won twice as a country before with the men’s team in 2007 and 2011. It has previously been held here in Edinburgh in 2005. It will see teams of four players, including a goalkeeper, on the field with four potential substitutes available to come on to battle for victories. Scotland, ranked 15th, will start the tournament in Group A alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Grenada, Hong Kong and Norway in the men’s draw of 48 teams. In the women’s draw of 16 teams in two groups, the national team are ranked seventh and in Group B alongside the Ivory

Coast, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands, Norway, the United States and Wales. The tournament takes place in George Square where three temporary pitches and stands will be set up for just over three thousand to hopefully fill out the area and bring some of the ‘People Make Glasgow’ atmosphere that is now expected at events in the city. It obviously goes deeper than just a kickabout on the grass in one of the major notable spots in Glasgow. Homelessness is obviously a key cause for a subject matter seen across the city on a daily basis. You can’t say that you have never seen homelessness or heard of the cause, whether it’s just walking down streets or people coming up to you for change when sitting or walking around George Square itself. This can be especially appreciated in a time where people have heard the word austerity uttered more times than it will have

However, this guide isn’t for them. No, it’s for you, the silent partners and friends who have no bloody clue about what’s going on, those who haven’t really a clue about the game but still like to join in on the action. So it’s time to swot up on some typical terms you’ll hear on the telly from 27 June–10 July: ACE – A serve that the returner doesn’t even touch with their racquet. An ace wins the point immediately for the server. DROP SHOT – A really soft shot hits just barely over the net, players do this to get their opponent up to the net. DEUCE – A tied score, when the score is 40-40. GRAND SLAM: Winning the U.S. Open, Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon all in one year, pretty impressive eh. LOB – When a player hits the ball high and pretty deep into the opponent’s court. LOVE – When there are zero points in a tennis game. MATCH POINT – The pretty exciting bit when a player only needs one more point to win the match. RALLY – This starts with the service and follows on with shots until the point is won by either player, can sometimes go on for ages! **The above could be totally incorrect btw, I typically pay too much attention to the Pimms and not enough to the game. by Courtney Hendry Online Editor

been a nine letter word on Countdown and in one where some of the population are potentially struggling. Hopefully such an event will humanise these people. A large majority of people will have probably kicked a football in their lifetime, and if the public are treated to a decent display of the beautiful game from people who could easily be blocked out by many and be some distance away from help, it may resonate and feel like these are people with talent and skills and not just nobodies. Much like a World Cup would be a great platform for a professional to display themselves, it would be encouraging to see people turn out for their one and only appearance at a Homeless World Cup and be rehabilitated from whatever problems may ail them and the difficulties they may find themselves in. by Cameron Paterson Twitter:
