Integrative Health Center Healing Through Habitat

Tඐඍඛඑඛ Sගඉගඍඕඍඖග

The medical field is one that has systematically been cruel to black and brown communities, especially those that are below the poverty line. I would like to design a facility that has the capability of incorporating alternative approaches to healing that did not prioritize opioids and profit but prioritizes patient wellness and recovery. I am proposing a rehabilitation center where clinical spaces are inviting and the environment aids in the patients wellness process. Incorporating biophilic design can promote a comforting environment where patients feel safe and cared for. Introducing comprehensive integrative health programs in underserved areas reduces the risk for disease, illness, and even death

West Ward

Central Ward

Neighborhoods: University Heights, The Coast, Springfield The central ward section of Newark, which was once known as old third ward, can be thought of as the heart of Newark. University Heights can be found here which is home to several different institutions including Rutgers Newark, New Jersey Medical School, NJIT, and Essex Community College. The area was initially predominantly German before shifting to a largely Jewish population, and later shifting again to mostly black and African American.

East Ward

Neighborhoods: Ironbound, Four Corners

Eastward is most notable for the Ironbound section of Newark. This area holds Newark’s downtown as well as Port Newark and its industrial area. The eastward has historically been home to a large immigrant population and has even been called “Little Brazil” or “Little Portugal”, as it has one of the largest Portuguese speaking communities within the US. The demographic also includes a large hispanic and african american community.

South Ward The southward section of Newark was once home to the cities Jewish population. The second largest hospital, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, can also be found in this area. Over time the population has shifted to be mostly hispanic and african american. neighborhoods: Weequahic, Dayton, Clinton Hills Neighborhoods: Weequahic, Dayton, Clinton Hills

This area is surrounded by Branch Brook Park and it is also where you can find the Forest Hill, a well-preserved historic, upscale neighborhood. Northward once contained the “Little Italy” section Neighborhoods: of Newark but the demographic has now shifted to Forest Hill, Broadway, Mt. Pleasant mostly being made up by those of hispanic decent.

West Ward

Neighborhoods: Fairmount, Valisburg, Roseville

The westward section of Newark was once home to a large Irish and Polish population. The westward is also home to the Fairmount Cemetery, a beautiful cemetery which opened up in 1855 and is known for is detailed monuments and hills. Over time the Irish and Polish population has decreased and the area is mostly made up of those of hispanic, black, and caribbean decent as well as a large Russian Jewish population.
